Your explanations are very clear and easy to understand. I didn't know that you were supposed to pay so much attentions to the direction of the threads. After all these years, who knew? Thank you.
Proving once again that we can always learn something new! Glad you liked those tips, and yes! Paying attention to what those threads are doing really helps!
Your video was so incredibly helpful. I just started stitching in hand with the sewing method and was not happy with the way my stitches looked. Your video explained why and what I need to do. Thank you for making this available!
Thank you so much for this video, Jan! Again it was immensely helpful. Everything you're saying makes a ton of sense and seeing it in action helps a ton. I'm going to try this when I stitch next. I just need to pay more attention instead of being in such a hurry! Also, your project is beautiful. Love the colors!
Thanks Jennifer! So many things about this is just an automatic movement, not something I really think about, so I wasn’t sure my explanations were making sense. Glad to hear that they did! Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.
Thank you so much for sharing this video! I have been stitching for over 30 years and am still amazed when I learn something new ~ the method you are using to fix your twisted threads in every possible situation is brilliant! I have been separating the threads and realigning them every time they misbehave which I think for me has been making them misbehave even more. I can't wait to try your way of making them work with eachother and to look more closely at exactly where the twist is occurring. Your stitching is beautiful.
Thanks Jan for another informative stitching tutorial!!! I always learn more on how to improve my in hand sewing technique. How exciting that the move to Hawaii is in progress!! I will be looking forward to your RV videos. Happy stitching and knitting!, Lynn
Thanks for this second tutorial on hand stitching, what you showed made it a lot clearer on the twists for me. I have been having trouble with that. I even started using a hoop for a while. You can tell the difference in my stitching. But I really am liking stitching in hand. Now I just have to practice. Wonder it I have another 30 something years of more practice. I can only wish.
Hi Jan, thanks for your tips! I was not aware of the strands of floss twisting and how it affects the way stitches look. I am practising now, what a difference it makes. Much neater. I have read about the basics of cross stitch, these things are not mentioned in the beginner books. Pleas continue sharing, I’ll keep watching. Greetings from the Netherlands, Janneke
Hi Jan, loving the sewing method. I have never stitched in hand until your last tutorial. I am now on my third piece. The first two were small to get my feet wet. Now I am doing a Joan Elliott piece. So far so good. However still on aida. I wish to work on even weave but can’t seem to see the holes. So aida it is. It just makes 1/4 stitches difficult. Glad your moving plans are falling into place. Happy stitching.
Wonderful Joanne! Glad it’s working out for you and that these videos are helpful. If Aida is working for you, no need to change it. Use whatever works for you!
Lord I wish it was in 60s here in Ms .I'm happy to see you working on this project, it's beautiful, mine is all one color. I may have to stop and think again! Happy to watch you stitching I stitch in hand also almost identical as you are. I see you also use your needle and finger nail to fix some stitches, if that's the way to say it. Always enjoy your video's as I've said before. Hugs, Lana
Thanks Lana! Yep, I often use my needle or fuss at stitches a bit with my fingernail. Whatever works! And before you know it, it will be in the 60s where you are!
Interesting video. I have a terrible time with my floss twisting so I’m definitely going to give this a go, thanks for the tutorial 😊 I also stitch in hand.
I love to sew-stitch but haven't mastered keeping my threads from twisting. I am starting a new project and am going to slow down and use this method. Do you know if this pattern is available? It is beautiful and I love the rich colors. Your work is beautiful !!!!
Hello. I am coming late to this video but really enjoyed the stitch in hand method. Do you usually wash your piece after you finish? Thanks for your video.
Hi Jackie! Whether I wash the piece totally depends on what fabric and floss I am using. So many of the specialist flosses, whether silk or cotton, are not color fast. Same with many of the hand-dyed linens. So basically, I only wash a piece if I am using DMC on a colorfast fabric. Which means I very rarely wash a piece, actually. Lol. But I am very, very careful with washing my hands before and while I stitch.
My son just flew to Hawaii yesterday for work. He loves Hawaii he is a software engineer for a 911 dispatch company. He considered moving over there.long way from Utah!
Hawaii is a long way from pretty much everywhere. Lol. That’s the one downside. But I am sure we will manage to cope somehow. It is finally seeming more real to us!
I actually have never used beeswax, so I’m not really sure. The method I showed works for me, so I haven’t tried anything else. I suppose you could use railroading with the sewing method. I haven’t, and it would probably slow things down a bit, but I don’t see why you couldn’t.
Jan--Have you ever strored wool yarn in plastic bins for a year or two? I stored mine in bins for about two years and when I opened it my yarn all had this horrible wool smell. All three bins. I guess my yarn couldn't breath and this happened. Not sure if you have experience in this and my case is rare or what. Just thought I would let you know since some of yours will be stored in bins in sweltering heat. BTW--When you get back from Arizona we need to meet up before you leave for Hawaii. PamC
Hi Pam! Yes, I store all of my wool in plastic bins. That’s pretty much the only way I have stored it for as long as I’ve been knitting, so we are talking 20 years and more. I have never had a problem with any odor on my yarn. Wonder if there’s a particular type of bin that has more odor? But I get bins wherever I am, Target, Walmart, Bed, Bath and Beyond, etc. I actually asked my friend down at the store in Sarasota about storing the yarn in the heat, and she said it shouldn’t be a problem. And yes, let’s be sure and arrange a get together when I get back. Time is going to fly by quickly!
When you place your needle between the two threads, that is called Railroading. You do that on any work, whether in hand or on a hoop or frame, if you want your stitches to lay flat and side by side.
I always use railroading to help my stitches lay flat. It’s so easy to remember and I’m brand new to stitching, so anything I can do to make it less challenging, I’m gonna do it. I’m not very good at cross stitch! Lol
Super helpful to see you jump around on the sewing method and straighten out your thread! thank you so much
Welcome Brandy! Glad you found it helpful!
Jan, love the piece you are working on, just so pretty and the colors are so vibrant. Enjoy your time to create, Kim
Thank you, Kim! Hope you’re having a great, stitchy week!

Thank you for the sewing method tutorials. Have been practicing. Wow, you have an extra full plate. I enjoy watching your Flosstube episodes.
Thanks Roseana! Let me know if you have any questions while you’re practicing. Have a great week!

Hi Ellen! Glad you are enjoying them! Thanks for being here!
It is fun watching you stitch so many great projects and all the many moves, many thanks

Thanks Lynn! The move is finally seeming real!
Thank you for this video Jan. I have just started project stitching in hand and this has helped me immensely.

Good video. I have always used the sewing method! To trow

شكرا جزيلا جميل جداً ورائع
The needle works really fine!!!!
Interesting.... I use stab method but I also manipulate threads the way you do. Seriously considering trying sewing method. Thank you.
Never hurts to give another method a try, just so you have it in your pocket should you need it!
what size needle are you using? What colors are you using on that piece? Love your videos. Can't wait for more.
Thank you for your part 2 tutorial. Would bees wax help threads from twisting? Can you railroad threads with sewing method?
I actually have never used beeswax, so I’m not really sure. The method I showed works for me, so I haven’t tried anything else. I suppose you could use railroading with the sewing method. I haven’t, and it would probably slow things down a bit, but I don’t see why you couldn’t.
Lovely. What size needle are you using? Thanks!
On this particular piece, I am using a 26 needle.
Really hepful, thank you.

Hi Jan, I love your video. One day how many hours you spent for stitching? And how many wip you have.
Hi Heriyanti! At this point in time, I have about 45 WIPs. I usually 5 - 6 hours a day.
When you place your needle between the two threads, that is called Railroading. You do that on any work, whether in hand or on a hoop or frame, if you want your stitches to lay flat and side by side.
Right. I know about railroading, but I’ve never had to do it to get my stitches to lay flat. I have heard or many people who do it, though.
I always use railroading to help my stitches lay flat. It’s so easy to remember and I’m brand new to stitching, so anything I can do to make it less challenging, I’m gonna do it. I’m not very good at cross stitch! Lol
beautiful....and thank you. Would love to see a little more lighting on your work. My eyes just can't see as well as they used to!
Good to know, Judy. It’s hard for me to judge sometimes, how much light if right before it gets to have too much glare.
