Yes, I also wanted to ask about the bleed and trim settings tutorial while setting up the business cards or other print material. Could you please do this? I seem to always struggle with this
Excellent video Tom, could you talk a bit about your printing experience? There are business cards with laminated finishes, jet barnish, corner topping, painted edge, dry stroke, etc.
You should dedicate a video to printing. I’ve been in printing for about 7 years now, and bleeds and margins are crucial! It’s so frustrating when this isn’t provided. Worse when the file we get is flattened and we can’t fix it.
100% agree with negative space. My business catds have my name, profession, and e-mail. I write my number personally because it makes people feel you're giving them exclusive info.
Super helpful tutorial.. thank u for teaching the important things to keep in mind about designing an effective business card... my most recently Designed business card was last year just before the lockdown in March and I used black in front and white at back with yellow scripted logo for a female clothing online shop. I feel that with your today’s tutorial, I can now design better business cards...
I think that we designers should get into printing, or at least understand the fundamentals, because online you will see lots of "awesome and unique" business card ideas (like templates that can be bought), but in reality those cards cannot be printed because either it has too many colors or gradients and unnecessary shapes. But since there's a lot of different types of business cards that can be printed and on different materials, having knowledge about those we can help our clients offeri them different card designs thus charging more.
People read from left to right watch stories that run from left to right across the screen . This if you put you picture on the left of your business card facing right you are psychologically reinforcing that you are a growing/active business vs facing the other way and suggesting backwards motion
@@SatoriGraphics Not my experience, I’ve only had one printer ask for 88 by 55 mm . 85 by 55mm has been far more common and consistent. What has changed has been the price. Twenty years ago trade was at least twice as much as what you can get at retail now.
Indesign is the best adobe software for print. I’ve never understood why so many designers try to do so much in photoshop. Maybe it’s just familiarity.
Yes that is the main function for InDeign, for laying out print projects. That being said, it would be nice to have the bleed options in Ps anyway. The way Adobe wants you to work is to create any photo-manipulation or digital painting in Ps, and if your print design needs any of those elements, you make them in ps and then bring them over to InDesign, or maybe Illustrator to set up for print. Illustrator is fine for print projects too, if they are not multiple page projects such as brochures.
@@SatoriGraphics Perhaps in the future Adobe may work towards bringing more core features to each of these programs. A bit like what the affinity programs are doing.
@@SatoriGraphics isn't Photoshop pixel based though so it makes sense to use it for images but if you are printing isn't it better for your text and other elements to be vectors? Surely they will print "cleaner" as vectors rather than pixels?

I design them almost everyday, in my country its 85 x 55 tho, and the bleed is very important of course never forget that unless you want white margins ruinning your design xD

Look at that subtle off white coloring, and the tasteful thickness to it. Oh my gosh, it even has a water mark.

The specifics depend on the printer. There are loads of tutorials available, just look for ”how to set up your files for printing” etc.

(As you mentioned) the negative or blank space can be used for writing quick notes by receives then why print cards with BLACK background, how many people Carry White pens ?
this is why the back of the card is either kept empty for that or a light color is used so any pen would write legibly.
