  • If you're a Kuk Sool Won practitioner and are keen to dislike this simply because it's different than what you know, read this first.
The first hyung or form pattern in Kuk Sool Kwan, called Cho Geup Hyung, is taught to those ranked at the yellow belt. Form or hyung practice is meant to train the body to move in certain ways. The patterns develop flow, timing and balance in ways that shadow boxing or bag work simply does not. Kuk Sool's forms combine the precision of taiji or internal qigong practice with explosive attacks.
Kuk Sool was founded in 1958 when the Kuk Sool Hwe first gathered. The Kuk Sool Hwe was a potluck of many martial arts masters who met in an attempt to preserve and share native Korean martial arts material including hapkido and various forms of kung fu. From the techniques shared there, Kuk Sool Won was registered in 1961 and Kuk Sool Kwan was registered in 1962. The founder of Kuk Sool Won is Suh In Hyuk. The founder of Kuk Sool Kwan is Kim Woo Tak. Both men are still alive, although Kim Woo Tak is older.
The Ancient Arts Dojang of Kuk Sool Kwan is its U.S. Headquarters and can be read about at www.ockoreanmar...

Honestly, going from kuk soo lwon in my youth, then to Wudang Kung Fu styles and now Sanda, Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu. I like this kuk sool style better for forms than what I had learned before.

Awesome! Very fluid in the motions. I like KSK's Cho Geup Hyung!

This looks a lot different than the original set’ the Circular movement is a little extra this is 2nd level or yellow belt But this is complete different variation other from the other organizations

      The original?
The other organizations are mostly breakaways from Kuk Sool Won and WKSA - Mu Sool Won, Kuk Sool Hapkido of In Sun, etc.
Kuk Sool Kwan was never a part of Kuk Sool Won and was founded by a man older than Suh In Hyuk at the same time that Kuk Sool Won was founded.

Yeah. I was in KSW years ago and moved on. This certainly is different. I don't hate it. Question: is the way you do it the same way your instructor showed you? I'm not fault finding. I'm njust trying to understand the difference....for instance, the way Master Huh does 108ki hyung is a bit different than what a ksw person does.
Wish I knew more about Kuk Sool Hwe, which is what you said in another comment, was the common root of three different Associations.

That's right about Kuk Sool Hwe.
Yes! What I am performing is the Kuk Sool Kwan version of Cho Geup Hyung as shown to me by Master Huh. I may have a more flowing style than he does, but the difference in movements and progression when compared with Kuk Sool Won's is exactly as Huh taught me.

@@mastermichaeldunchok Thanks for the answer. I'm not sure what your schedule looks like, but if you ever put up more empty hand hyung videos, I'd surely watch them. But if Kuk Sool Kwan prefers to keep the hyung off the internet, I certainly understand.

@@jkdbuck7670 Oh, I'm working my way through our curriculum. I have so many hapkido sets to edit, just sitting in the can (lol the techniques, not me) ; po bahk sool, ko geup eue bok soo, jarp ki, etc

What is the difference between your style and Kuk Sool Won?

I believe the approach. We have been through fewer hands, therefore the curriculum hasn't been passed down and simplified for crowds and families. More of a practical mentality. My master taught special forces.
