    ** Verdict **
    Well, what can I say... currently this is the best sword in my collection. Highest material quality, superior fit and finish, and amazingly lively in the hand. Sorry if this comes across as a little biased, it's just how I feel about this sword.
    I did some pretty hard tests with it, especially some of the thrusts into 20% balistic gel with dry bamboo stick inside put a lot of stress on the blade. And the soaked newspaper rolls with a couple of layers of plastic wrap are fairly challenging to cut. It handled everything perfectly.
    I can only say, if you're looking for a historically accurate reproduction of a Medieval sword and can afford the price, go for it. It's worth every cent.

      It would only be good for thrusting, if that, and useless for cutting. You need a certain amount of mass in the blade for it to be effective.

    Very awesome Scottish arming sword and even a Viking would be proud to wield it! You can tell its design was heavily influenced by early Viking age swords. It is balanced like my sword I use in my videos on my channel but a little lighter so I am sure it will cut perfectly.

    • @MorrisonScotch
      @MorrisonScotch 5 лет назад +1

      The history of this stuff is pretty much way off.
      The designs are from the islands off the coasts of Scotland. The first swords were formed in kelp kilns where the people harvested kelp to make soap, and other various products. The hilt design is from what kelp looks like in the water. The weapons was very high grade carbonized from the ash of kelp. Both sides of the island called these island's the old castle. Where the actual Odin and Thor ruled from.

      Which islands are you referring to? The Northern Islands, like the Shetlands and the Orkneys, or the Western Isles between Galloway and Ulster? The Northern Islands were first settled in very ancient times, long before the Vikings. The Orkneys were ruled for some centuries by Viking rulers but the native population remained. The Shetlands, being closer to Northern Scotland, were ruled for a shorter period by Viking rulers. Both the Shetlands and Orkneys returned to Scottish rule shortly before the time of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Weapons developed there would have been influenced by both Norwegian designs and Scottish ones. The Western Isles were long independent and, while there were Viking settlers, were mostly settled by the Gaelic Irish who migrated through them to Galloway and the Highlands in the late Roman and early post-Roman period to form the Highland Scots. Scottish Gaelic is very close to Irish, and could even be cinsidered a dialect. Music and other aspects of culture are obviously very similar. The earlier original people of Scotland were the Picts, who battled the Romans and of whom we know little. Certainly large numbers of modern Scots are Pictish descendents. Picts were probably related to the early settlers of the Orkneys and Shetlands.

    The fact that there is Norse sword influence in the design may be reflected in the name "Caithness". Caithness is the most northern county on the Scottish mainland and is just south of the Orkney islands. Caithness was under Norse rule for hundreds of years, the Norse settled there and their language ( Norn) was spoken there. It is still covered in Norse place names.

    The stock removal method (cutting a sword from a steel blank and grinding) is a good way to make a sword. There's less chance of cracking the steel and having to start over, and there's less stress in the blades.
    I hope to buy an Albion sword soon! :D

    Albion did once have a second branch that did hand forge. I cant remember the sword smiths name but he was inspired by fantasy blades from the 60s and 70s and claimed to have perfected a modern version of the katana. The smith has since passed but his work was the real thing.

    Chalk me up as another Albion fan. I've got a friend who has a pair of Vassal Falchions and they handle like a dream. Quite elegant, especially for a sword pattern that was considered more crude than a long sword. I'm currently working on saving up for one of their Norman swords as that type of blade would have been carried by my ancestors at Hastings (in fact I've managed to trace my lineage to the Brooks clan which some sources cite as being key to providing William the Conqueror with the manpower he needed for his invasion of Britain and acquitted themselves well enough to go from being fishermen and farmers to minor nobility as a result of the campaign).

      I hear you (cost him closer to 1200 each since we're in the U.S. and the exchange rates apply, but basically same price) but he's a huge fan of falchions and liked his first Vassal enough that he bought another: one to pass down to a favored relative when he dies and one that will be buried with him. He's a bit of an odd fellow.

    The steel used in tires is pre-tensed steel cable. It is a very strong cable, so such a small amount of damage indicates this is some serious steel. I do not think I have ever had anything made of that steel now that I think about it. Maybe I should look up that steel.

    Good heat treating with modern steel is impressively flexible. There's always a fine line to tread between tempering too much and losing hardness or leaving it too hard and brittle. Walter Sorrells posted a video called "Steel testing for Knife makers", where he takes a pipe wrench to a test blade and tries as hard as he can to snap or even bend it. I don't think your sword is in any danger.

    swords with very short handles often feel very lively. it's something to do with your hand almost being sandwiched between the guard and the pommel, there's just more surface contact between the hand and the handle, and the slight amount of 'squish' you get from the flesh on your fingers is reduced too, making the blade itself respond better to your hand movements. there's probably technical terms for what i just said, but this comment comes just from what i've found while testing swords like this.

    Two points;
    1. I'm obsessed with the Albion Gallowglas.
    2. For those who are complaining about the price of milled blades, high end CNC mills are EXPENSIVE. Six figures each to buy and tens of thousands dollars a year to operate. I used to work for one of the largest guitar makers in the US and getting a new CNC was a big deal for them.

    i got an Albion Thane six months ago - it seems on the whole to be a more affordable but similar sword to the Caithness; I feel the same about it that you do about the Caithness - even with regards to the cutting. myself and my brother had a turn at cutting things: i know a little more about swinging bits of metal (kendo of all things - the basics are cross-compatible after all) but i could feel the vibration even when the angle was only slightly off. it almost jumped out of my brothers hand! (overswing didnt help. massive, massive overswing)

      They offer payment plans along with a deposit between 150 to 300 US dollars if you're tight on money
      That's what I'm doing to pay for my Albion, and it will take me only 5 or 6 months to pay it off.

    Hey, Skall! Can you make a fantasy sword video on the new Lightsaber design on the importance of hilts in sword fighting? The design is getting lot of hate, but in my limited knowledge, i figured the hilt has a practical use in combat. I'd love to heard your commentary on the design.

    Hey skall, this and the laird are freakin amazing. I'm very torn between the 2 but leaning toward the laird. I did run across the Scottish onehander from the "craftsman" series on VA's website and was wondering if you had any experience with it or the "craftsman" line in general. They say that they forge them in house, etc. Thoughts?
