  • This functional reproduction is inspired by a 10th century hilt and designed to fit within the general style of the time. From what I can tell this is the equivalent to a Petersen Type R, and overall fairly similar to a number of original Viking era finds.
    ** Specifications **
    Overall length: 85.5 cm / 33.5 in
    Blade length: 70 cm / 27.5 in
Blade width (widest): 5.2 cm / 2 in
Blade thickness: 5.6 mm / 0.22 in at the guard, tapering down to 3.7 mm / 0.14 in near the tip
    Weight: 1.18 kg / 2.6 lbs
Point of balance: 13 cm / 5 in from the guard
Blade material: 5160 high carbon spring steel
    Hilt material: Cast bronze
    Assembly: Full tang, peened
    Time period: 10th - 11th century
    ** Pros / Cons **
+ Excellent, well tempered blade steel with a very durable edge
    + Strong construction
    + Beautiful decorations
    + Very good handling
    - Details on the cast bronze could be more crisp
    - Loose scabbard
** Where to get it **
[UPDATE: As it turns out the sword they sent me is not the Oslo but an entirely new model. DSA's statement in a forum was that it would release soon but that was back in April 2018. It seems currently the only models available are still the Oslo and Einar. Unfortunately they didn't tell me about that.]

Always amazes me how flexible sword blades are when shown cutting in slow motion! Even what I would have expected to be a relatively stiff blade such as this one, shows a fair bit of flex! I've seen similar unexpected flex in rifle barrels during firing too to a degree which IF It wasn't consistent, would have a horribly negative effect on accuracy. I spent a good number of years working in my local hospital Emergency Department, and I'm fairly familiar with serious injuries. The amount of damage inflicted by that sword on the 'Ballistics dummy' would without ANY doubt have been quite rapidly fatal! Thick clothing such as a gambeson would however significantly reduced the effect, although it's not something that I'd like to try in real life!

You can fill the gap that you don't like with Dragon's Blood. It's a fairly inexpensive, dense resin that's resistant to shock damage. It's actually been used in east, near east and middle east for thousands of years to do exactly that. Just heat it in a teaspoon over a candle until it melts and starts to form small bubbles in it. Then carefully tip it into the negative space you want to fill (it should creep to fill around to most of the other side, doing it on on side). It's great stuff for keeping moisture , dust and gunk out of small gaps like that.

The comparatively large pommels we see on swords out of early Scandinavian history, certainly do leave one with the impression that the extreme handshake grip was typically used. I wonder, even, if the entire point of those broad pommels (as opposed to a smaller pommel) was to solidly register against the inner wrist, while the sword is being swung almost pendulous.

I've got two Darksword pieces myself. One I got directly from them ( The Danish Two handed ) and the other I got from KoA ( Gothic Two handed )
The Danish one, I ordered sharpened and it came with a really uneven grind, couldn't cut a milk jug full of water, and I think the resulting impact from that might have rattled the tang a bit. I've since put a better edge on it, but I can feel and hear something clicking inside the hilt. Don't know if a strip of wood came loose from impact or if the tang snapped inbetween two rivet points. Sword still seems to work though. Another thing is the finish grind on the blade is a bit uneven, you can see raised and low spots all throughout. Definitely doesn't help with cutting.
The Gothic sword, on the other hand, is really damn immaculate, and KoA put an excellent edge on it. If you look that one up on KoA's website, I left a nice review on it there under the name Matt H. I'd say the only addendum to my prior review I put on there, would be that once you get used to it, the sword actually becomes pretty damn responsive. It's got that thicc diamond cross sections that can weave and cleave. And it's hilt is excellent too, as it takes on the shape of the cross section, lets you index that edge and feel where it's going super easily.

    • @matthewett4273
      @matthewett4273 5 лет назад

EDIT: Actually make that three, forgot I even had one of the Daggers as well.
I also have their Knight ( Knightly? ) dagger. Got it from KoA with the sharpening service.
All I can say about that one is that it definitely does the job, and that the scabbard needs to be way tighter. You gotta belt that one on really good because the dagger is so hilt balanced(?) that it WILL flip itself upside down and jump right out of that scabbard. It managed to cut my hand a little bit, I went to grab for it but also remembered safety 101 and recoiled my hand back and just let it fall, was too late though, it bit me. Still an excellent dagger though, just belt it tight, or even better, get rid of the straps and slip it into a frog.
So with that in mind, I think it's best if you're gonna buy a Darksword brand sword, you might want to do it through Kult of Athena, as they have a much better quality control. I'm curious how much Dark Sword Armoury stuff they reject every month, might be worth asking them.

People have problems understanding that some common concepts of today have been completely alien to people just 150 years ago. Like exchangeable parts. There were no two identical weapons until exchangeable parts became possible by industrialization and standardization of manufacturing processes. For example, on a class in a barracks where I served we were talking about arms logistics and one of the soldier asked the question why every single part on some old, obsoleted guns were marked with serial numbers or parts of serial number. Instructor, of course, replayed that is was the way it was done back in the day. Stupid answer for stupid people, but question made me think so I grabbed couple of those rifles and mixed the parts. They still work, although not perfectly. So, I did the same with older patern of guns, some pre-WW1 Steyr guns and bolt wouldn't even close. Those rifles might have looked identical, but even that close in our history there was no manufacturing capability to perfectly replicate parts. And somebody really believes that all the swords in 10th - 11th century were the same...

I am never going to put any trust into that company again. Bought the Norman sword from them, about 5 years ago. It was supposed to be peened according to their advertising and at first, it does appear to be. Well, this is not the case.... at least back then. I noticed the Pommel shift and upon further inspection, I was able to unscrew it and voila.....it's a threaded assembly. I don't know how they handle business today but once you get scammed like that, I won't give it anymore trust.

There was styles ore types of saber but they wary in look. IF you had more money, you could buy something custom maid, if not you would buy a stock version.

I have a question for you and maybe you've already answered this somewhere else but I would like to know your opinion on swords. I'm seeing all kinds of Swords flood the market right now that are like $119 or whatever and they are labeled battle-ready. Then I see kind of a jump in price to 350 up to 500. Then I see a jump in price from 800 to 2,000. I'm looking for a sword that I could spar with that I could actually use but I can't put much confidence in these low-end ones and I'm wondering how they can call them battle ready? My impression is they've got to be just as cheap as dirt because up until a couple of months ago I was seeing all of the swords that were something you could spar with in the 800 and up range. What is going on in the industry? Is it just that they're saying that they are bad already because of the type of Steel that use? Is it because they've come up with a cheaper way of manufacturing something? What would you recommend a person go out and purchase if they plan to use it in they're Hema group?

    • @pineappleonpc3902
      @pineappleonpc3902 5 лет назад +2

If you are looking for steel swords to use in HEMA I would recommend you check the type of steel listed (5160 or 6150 is always nice). If the type of steel is not listed either contact the shop you are purchasing from or just don't buy it. Personally if the type of steel is not listed I would click away without hesitation. If it's listed as stainless or mild steel, don't buy it. Also if you are looking for swords to use in HEMA you have to realise that you need swords designed for HEMA (swords that flex more at the weak of the sword, spatulated or rolled tips).
If you're looking for a feder/longsword you can check out ensifer, kvetun or castille armouries(they make a whole bunch more but are way expensive). Blackfencer also makes steel swords these days (they have a good reputation and are quite affordable, orders do take *very* long to make though). I would recommend checking out the channel of Blood and Iron here on youtube, they have a bunch of reviews on gear and practice swords.

The thing about Viking sword topology is high quality swords were passed down, you can find older style blades with newer hilts even generations differences or even vice versa. That's makes classifying them by era more difficult than other types of swords. Then you have all the different smiths/artisans making them, they are not churned out of a factory, each smith/artisan has their own style that all swords before manufacturing had. Add in customers desires... Topology is just basic categorization rather than definitive, a better topology system would be each one is a morph target in a 3D program so you can get an idea on the shapes between the topology classed ones.
The peen on that isn't accurate. They peened it to the pommel cap and not the guard, the cap is a decorative/balance cover that hides the peen.
