Even divided by two people, if both are working full time or even one full time and the other part time, there just isn't enough time to do it. It is also very easy to take on projects that go out of control or never get done. Then there is finding damage or incorrectly done work when you start looking around. Brescia would be "BRESHA" (the "i" is silent). And principe is "PRINCHIPE".
Beautiful sword by the way 😁
I don't know it that's just how the company pronounces it, but we don't know how Latin was originally pronounced. Either of you could be correct
@@Ari-elle-420 well the company is probably wrong XD. I used to get so angry in Italy when I saw McVeggie ads on TV, the way they pronounced it. Anyway as an Italian I can give you the modern pronunciation but I can't be 100% sure about the XV century one, what I can tell you is that it's definitely not Latin. There's a high probability it was something like "BRESSIA" with a very spanish sounding "s", and in that case the "i" is not silent. Regarding "Principe" that is probably a "CH". Ecclesiastical Latin had lost the "k" sound next to the "e" or "i" in the middle ages, so it's definitely not "PRINKIPE". Regarding a possible "s" sound, "PRINSIPE", in modern Italian, original Latin and later Latin the "c" is never pronounced as "s". That is something that only happens in traditional english pronunciation of Latin words, like Caesar which is pronounced as "SEEZAR" in the english world, where the original latin was "KAESAR" and the ecclesiastical is "CHEZAR". You might be right though because the sword's name is in Volgare, and we don't know how the regional accents of old Italian would say Principe. There's a high chance that it was a "CH" as in the modern variant, or a "TS" as in northern accents but we can't be sure. So I guess the modern "PRINCHIPE" is probably the safest choice. Sorry about the length XD
@@Ari-elle-420 I was taught all 'c's in Latin are 'k' sounds. So that would make principe, "prinkeepay"

A question regarding that gap: would it be practical / period-accurate to close it with something like beeswax to prevent rain or other liquids from getting there?
My thoughts too, it seems like something they would do, especially during a campaign, but i have heard anybody mention it.
If it is materials that were used in the period and you have knowledge of related techniques, I'd say go for it. Humans have always been resourceful, and chances are someone did it.
Beeswax would have been a more expensive option, animal fat would probably be more readily available. BUT, smearing your sword in bacon grease, while effective, is gross and you'd probably want to use beeswax.
@@sayerglasgow115 it wouldn't be crude animal fat, it will spoil and will definitely ruin cord and leather. And it smells. Tallow, however, would work better, but it is obviously more expensive than fat. And it also will spoil eventually.
Edit:
Another viable option is wood resin, but it is messier, brittle and hard to remove, if need be.
@@neTTer0h Tallow would likely be preferred for something like that. It's worth considering though that swords back in the day weren't meant to be pristine display pieces. They got bashed against things and covered in gore and often needed to be maintained in less-than-ideal conditions. At home things like beeswax, linseed oil, or tallow would be preferred. In the field, I'm sure lots of weapons wound up smeared with cooking grease just because it was what was on hand and kept them from rusting.
I like the little catches on the cross guard. That seems like a good way to keep a sword from glancing off and hitting your hand.

This is your best video intro Skall
The juxtaposition from Skall pulling a Comissar charge to the glorious shot of the sword laying in the pine branches with soft music

the fuller extending into the guard would give a massive relief as far as tolerance is concerned during smithing.... Personally, without the fuller relief (unless extremely skilled) you would be adding numerous hours creating a tight fitment across the entirety of the blade's faces.... It's kinda hard to put into words. Letting the fuller extend down takes away at least 30% of the fitment required.
Think of it like those "Gator Grip universal sockets"... 2 sides of the bolt or nut head could be ignored (easier to explain with a picture; draw a hexagon, and you only need to match 4 sides rather than 6).... in an average sword's case, it would just give those 4 sides A LOT more wiggle room to match...
or rather; draw a diamond (parallelogram) on a piece of paper.... and then try to cut another, by eye, to precisely fit the first.... you would quickly realize, how much easier it would be to do, if you gave yourself that fuller gap to work with. You wouldn't need to worry about EXACT dimensions of every single face, but rather just matching the blade angles/shoulder(s). You'd only be worrying about 2 angles and not 4.
(honestly, you could probably FEEL this concept in your "half-swording:" video @Skallagrim, especially on the second technique ruclips.net/video/vwuQPfvSSlo/видео.html )
Seems silly to spend so much extra time on something so trivial, ESPECIALLY back in the day..... Why make it more complicated when you'll most likely be getting "other liquids" in every nook and cranny regardless.... I'd think techniques for tight fitment and/or time would come wayyyy before potential fluid penetration. $$$$$... talkin' pretty fancy details that might be on swords that (I'd bet) didn't even see battle.... and even then, might be completely unrealistic from a historical standpoint.
IMO, blacksmiths get "good" by knowing the tricks to make things easier. The fewer times you need to swing your hammer, and the fewer times you need to heat, the better

Hey Skall, you mentioned something about the Fuller going down past the crossguard and potentially allowing moisture to get down into the grip and causing damage. Wouldn't you be able to plug that sort of gap with something to prevent that? Or would that not work for whatever reason?
I was thinking an oily substance like pitch could protect the gap and the metals. With the proper blend it could also avoid electrical corrosion between steel and copper. Those skilled in such matters should be consulted for all details as this is mere unqualified guesswork on my part.

I fricking love that you and your partner are the kind of crazy to get in a car and do drive by cuttings with a longsword.
Be happy in your work! Some work is happier than others.
Me, trying mounted combat in Kingdom Come.
Yeah, don't bother. Just get off and cut 'em down.
@@davidkyo1985 Actually, it's more OP than you might think. It's really the only way to kill the Cumans in the beginning. Dragging around their stuff makes you a ton of money whenever you get the chance to sell it. It's like the equivalent of dragging around 20 sets of Enclave armor in Fallout 3. Super slow but, 1800 caps per set is an amazing payout.
Me with the lothric knights straight sword in dark souls
I still don't get why that sword works on every fucking build lol
Almost like the balder swag sword.
@@milanelst5754 Great moveset low stats reqs and good scaling on numerous infusions.
Claymore is also great.
The helm is freaking awesome!
I love the shine that streaks across the blade 5:47
Skall, with all due respect, not saying you are wrong, but i am having a hard time seeing that as a "type XVIIIa" , if i remember correctly a type XVIIIa should not have such a long handle, instead being more oriented to single handed use, it should not have a fuller , and should be a more narrow and straight profile that tapers to a point from the start.
Having said that, i have a hard time clasifying it, but if i had to take a guess and looking to my example of "the sword, form and tought" i would say it falls more under the type XVIa.
...
In fact, after a quick google search, i am convinced its a type XVIa.
Agree
Can you unscrew the pommel to end him rightly?
Skal cutting things from a car with a sword is my new favorite thing on the entire internet. Bravo sir, bravo
Really beautiful sword. I like the bronze-look as well... and it goes well with the red of the hilt.
But man... you live in a beautiful landscape - show us!
Do some videos from time to time when you drive around or hiking and get us some nice views of those canadian mountains and forests.
since when have you become a empeiral commissar XD
An effective pommel is the most important part. Perfect sword...if just the pommel was unscrewable.
Nice sword, sharp. And you wield it nicely
That's a sick blade, and a badass helm too 👊
Shadiversity has a warbow made by Joerg that could be used by your army when the world reverts to feudalism after Covid 19. 😁
