Choking a spear in close qualter deserves more investigation. That left almost a meter of spear shaft behind which if you were maneuvering in close qualters there's a high chance the butt of the shaft could hit a wall, table, colums or other stuff, disrupting your aim, missing a parry or strike
I am by no means an expert, but (western) spear technique is all thrusts; no swinging or slashing. Thrusts are very controlled and linear. You aren't likely to hit the shaft of the spear against the wall if you are facing parallel to the wall. Only if your back was against the wall would that be an issue, but in that case, dropping the spear and drawing a sword will be easy enough in a moments time.

Swords are used against newly scourged people and are not going to work against anything that can corner a hunter.

Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it and it looked like Shad really enjoyed filming. Here is the usual support for channel growth and I hope you guys have a great day.
One kind of attack in the game is when you use the transformation of the weapon AS the attack. Idk how hard it would be to make a mechanism like that, but its like spring loaded or something and can spring open and that motion is used to simultaneously transform the weapon and attack in a single motion, and can be part of a combo. Also the serrated weapons are specifically used on the beasts in the game (Or at least were designed to fight them, lore wise) and do bonus damage to beasts, who do not wear clothes.
regular flip blades either utilize a bar locking mechanism(no idea what's actually called, it's literally a metal bar that runs the length of the handle) or a holding pin lock. It requires the blade itself to be designed around the concept which can be a mechanical challenge on how much material you'll need so it doesn't shear off or wear out too quickly as well as whatever is locking it into place being thick enough to counter the weight of whatever is hitting it. Certainly doable, but will add weight, not to mention keeping the blade stable enough so it doesn't wobble and stays relatively straight enough to lock into it's marginally safer collapsed position...
Sooo... burial blade when? this was awesome though. nice work lads! EDIT: for the transformation of the weapon, gameplay wise they enable the player to string together different attacks and pull off more combos when attacking. the folded position on the saw spear also allows the player to swing the weapon faster and do bigger wind-up berserk attacks faster. as for weapons like the saw cleaver, the folded position matters on what youre fighting. in the videogame the serrations actually do additional damage against beasts, causing more bleeding. so lore wise, the reason why a hunter would switch between the two is not only the attack style, but to defeat beasts more efficiently. not only that, but most weapons in their folded (un-transformed) state can more easily be held in a one hand. this frees up their other hand for a firearm that hunters will carry. be it a blunderbuss, flintlock or even a cannon. another thing about the different hunter weapons; some weapons when transformed can change the weapon entirely! an example is the burial blade i mentioned above, its a curved sword until you transform it into a scythe. another example is the kirk hammer. longsword when one handed, giant two handed maul when two handed.
One of the big gameplay reasons for the transforming weapons is that the collapsed version can be used with one hand, allowing the hunter use a firearm in their offhand.
Additionally, even if that point was rendered moot by some Trick Weapons being already one-handed in either form, the extended mode typically offers either more range or damage at the expense of speed, handling or both.
Bloodborne weapons are badass. Can you try something like the kirkhammer or ludwig's holy blade where the sword sticks into a stabbard like hole into another weapon piece transforming it? I would love to see that!
Hunters in BB are superhuman. They are superhumanly strong, superhumanly fast, and superhumanly durable. It may not appear that way, in game, but that is done simply for gameplay purposes. It's similar to the new GOW games and how Kratos isn't creating cracks in the earth with each step he takes but has to instead use a chain to climb up 10 feet. Just watch the Gehrman boss fight and that is only a small illustration of their capacity. But again, that is still vastly toned down for gameplay purposes. Hunters are immensely powerful beings, and even the lore states that firearms technology is so ineffective against larger beasts, that hunters had to take up massive blunt or bladed instruments to kill their prey. Think about how utterly dangerous these weapons would be in the hands of superhumans, and now you know why they look and function the way they do.
Basically this. It's very worth noting that these weapons were designed for people who've been given cursed supernatural blood from a literal eldritch god, and are used to fight beasts born from that same blood. It's also worth noting that this blood itself is the most valuable currency in Bloodborne's world, so weapon design that promotes spilling as much blood as possible was very encouraged.
No, I’ve played the game dozens of times and know the lore. Hunters are not ridiculously powerful. They’re just humans with physical capabilities of the beast they fight, they’re fast, strong, they can withstand wounds that are lethal and heal from blood of their enemies. But they can be killed the same as the beasts they fight.
You all need to do two things next: 1) Try making a Threaded Cane next. I love that weapon and would love to see someone attempt to make a real life version. 2) Make Shad play Bloodborne. It's so awesome and it's what I'm playing to kill time before the Elden Ring DLC drops.
Obviously the most practical Bloodborne weapon is Ludwig's Holy Blade. If I remember correctly, you even mentioned it once on this channel, in video about giant swords. The idea of Holy Blade being just a regular longsword that can be transformed in giant sword for crowd control or large enemies is pretty simple, yet incredibly effective
That curved handle is really interesting to me, my immediate thought when looking at it is that the handle is more like an axe handle. Would be very interested to see a normal straight sword with that curved hilt to see what you would do with it!
I think Shad is so impressed by how well the serrations work because of the targets they are using. Plastic bottles only have structural integrity in the surface. If you cook, you know that things with tough skin and soft insides (like tomatoes) are best cut with serrated knives. With straight edged knives you get the same experience cutting tomatoes as cutting water bottles: a very steep drop off in cutting performance once the blade dulls. You probably would have had a different experience if you tested these against pool noodles (or meat/ meat analogues).
In regard to the serrations, remember that these are beast-hunting weapons and so are not meant to deal with armor or really even clothing. The beasts are weak to bleeding so the weapons want to make them bleed as much as possible; so they are meant to rip and tear more than cleanly cut or stab.
If i'm recalling my lore correctly, as well as the blood bathing the hunters use to heal themselves, there is also a conceptual element to the damage caused by serrated weapons towards beast like opponents. Something about the shredding and lacerating damage of the teeth mimicking the bestial nature of their own power. In a similar vein to how the purifying elements of fire are devastating to beasts while you can plunge a hand into their chest to pull something out and be but a minor inconvenience.
it’s honestly impressive not only for your usually channel views with how high of subs you have but also to use bloodborne in your title and not break 200k views is honestly impressive.
Two things about the sawspear and the saw type trick weapons in general. The sawspear is (depite the name) still more of a swinging weapon than stabbing so there is *potentially* an argument for using the folded state in the alleys. As for the serrations, as mentioned it is to get as much blood as possible, and also they are fighting either completely or mostly unarmored enemies. So itll still catch but not *as* bad as if it were being used against armor.
There is knifemakers that use serrations on certain knives that cut very very well if done properly it's pretty surprising I'm not a serrations person myself but I've seen them do some amazing things on knives
Serrations are somewhat sensitive to the shape. A saw-like 'N'-type serration can get stuck, but a bread-knife 'W'-type serration much less so. Also, a saw has thick, non-beveled teeth since its function isn’t to cut, but to impact-break fibers by tearing a small piece out. If the serrations are beveled, they are much more likely to cut (which you don’t want in a saw, since it needs to make space for itself or it will jam). Interestingly, water bottles is probably an ideal medium to cut with a serrated edge, as it outperforms a straight edge on material with a tough but flexible outer 'skin' but interiors that don’t provide much support structurally. Like tomatoes… or giant insects (probably). But it would probably get seriously lodged if cutting into bone with some power.
Personally i feel the rifle spear is the most practical of the trick weapons. Its a spear and the folding action allows for a shotgun firearm. Granted i can't imagine the pain of bulding it, but i love it personally.
if Tyranth ever builds a stake driver mock-up, he neds to pay attention to the shafts on both sides, because there's a neat detail that took me a second to notice
Looking at how calmly Shad stands next to this beast-weapon, when the blade in the closed state looks straight into his face, and remembering how easily Tyrant in the video on his channel snapped the blade off the latch on the handle and how quickly the weapon fully opened... Guys, of course you are professionals and all that, but be careful there.
Ah Bloodborne. Nothing says fighting beasts like gardening with the whirling-gig saw + watering spray (flame-thrower) or letting a random eldritch parasite give you tentacles. Beast cutter will always be my favourite though. It is as elegant as a falling elephant and I love it.
Shad -- For FNT, when you get to Episode 4. As the sword expert point out that ALL of those Jedi igniting their light sabers standing shoulder to shoulder is incredibly dangerous. Maybe upload a short video of you doing 'flourishes' with a long sword to Gary, so the audience can see just how much space an individual (without a shield) needs to swing and deploy a single sword-like weapon. Then I would point out two other things: 1) The Romans, with armor and shield, had about 1m separation to the next soldier, standing about 2m from soldier to soldier. All to allow the free use of their swords... AND this was/is considered "Close formation". 2) Even in the SW Clone Wars videos, they did not ignite their light sabers next to each other. There is a lot of combat there, and after some quips, one Jedi would ignite their saber and trot forward deflecting blaster bolts, and the next would follow a few paces behind. ALL to give each of them room to swing freely. Question: How stupid are these Jedi? OR, how poorly trained are they? Followup: A sword has a flat side, in fact, most of it is non-threatening (only the edges). But a light saber is a 360 degree weapon, that can cut through anything from any angle or direction. Conclusion: The people making this have no idea what they are doing... on any level including the fight coordinators and weapons specialists. How the mighty have fallen from the sword play in the movies and even in the Animated series like the Clone Wars (which was supposedly Dave Filoni's 'baby'!)
There's a list of fairly practical bloodborne weapons, But the most interesting of that list is the Rukoyo. It's a double bladed weapon much like darth mauls lightsaber, however one blade is shorter like a dagger. They can be split in oder to duel weild a saber and dagger. I would love to see you look at more bloodborne weapons because each one has such fun quwerks and little gimmicks
My reasoning for the closed position is carrying it, because you’re climbing up down , pulling levers etc . And the city is absolutely filthy which can gunk up mechanisms. But having the ease of carry is worth it if in a pinch the weapon can be used while closed Tldr the closed fighting style was intended as a last resort if you couldn’t unfold the weapon in time for a fight but the need for ease of carry out weighed the benefits of removing the mechanism
Like with most other weapons the saw spear becomes two-handed in its transformed state, preventing the use of a firearm in the off-hand. Hunters tend to prefer fighting in the closed state and switch to the spear when the situation requires.
I love fantasy weapons that are well thought out to make sense in their world. And for a bit more merit on the closed position, these weapons are to deal with a plague of monstrous beasts who love to pounce and rip with claws and fangs. A hunter caught off guard or knocked over can still shred a beast that's all up in their business. it would fit in that arms length gap between them and the squishy underbelly of snarling beasts
the moment I saw one of those i was like "This feels like something the maker of the machete, the scythe, and the branch-cutting pole saw would bring you" it's... pretty practical-looking by fantasy weapon standards.
i think some sort of trigger activated clasp for the blade that lets it switch back and forth between positions might make it more practical, since the main problem with the position switching trick weapons just seems to be the give in the joint that controls its position. not sure itd ever be as easy to swap as in the games, but i can see a lot of them becoming much more practical when you dont have to worry that you might accidentally hit yourself with it.
I watched the vid where Tyranth made that blade and was very impressed at the quality of the final blade. To see how effective it is in use was very surprising. If used against lightly armoured or unarmoured opponents it would be devastating with its tearing and shredding due to the serrations and quite capable of very deep wounds . Very entertaining
The Hunter axe feels like an exceptional piece, if you have the strength to wield the thing. You'd probably have to make it a bit smaller, but it's basically a weighty one-handed ax, where you can pull the handle further out into a two-handed weapon like a halberd. Aside from that, the threaded cane would be extremely difficult to build and maintain, but has potential. A serrated whip that also doubles as a sharpened club. I suppose the cane would have to have a button that allows you to adjust the tension on the go.
I'm gonna vote the telescopic axe as the most practical Bloodborne weapon. Want to hit something up-close and personal? One-handed mode. Want to spin-to-win or overhead chop from a (relatively) safe distance? Two-handed mode.
I'll take a Bat'leth thank you very much! I know, I know, you have already talked about its strengths/weaknesses...... still love it!!!! (Especially with a horrific roar behind it, he, he, he!)
When the weapon is folded up it reminds me of a tonfa. If you added an extra handle jutting out at 90 degrees, it would add a lot of functionality while folded up.
As someone who has never played Bloodborne, this scythe thing is a giant version of the knife on a stick-like tool we utilize in Puerto Rico to cut down breadfruit from trees. Lol
Most easily practical bloodborne weapon is easily the hunters axe. It's just an axe with two section telescoping handle and you can see the lock bolts in it. It would be a fairly straightforward build with no modifications.
I would recommend installing some kind of stoper at the hinge, if you haven't already, to prevent the blade from ever getting close to your fingers even on accident. The end of the weapon already stops the blade but you can never to careful when a saw blade is close to your fingers. Redundancy and safety go hand-in-hand. Maybe add a hand guard as well near the top as well.
In close position think of it as a brass knuckle you use it in very close combat where you hook it in their face and yes the beast are very fast they can close in on you before you can get into any stance so you have to brawl with it.
The most practical Bloodborne weapons are probably the axe and the Moonlight greatsword, one is just a magical sword and the axe you just make the handle longer And yeah, makes sense sharp serrations are effective lmao specially when are meant for armorless foes like beasts

I was legitimately waiting for the blade to come off and go whistling over your back fence and crash through their back door. Yes, I trust Tyranth's builds...usually. I want to see the scythe next, because that would be my choice in a real fight.
@@RealLifeIronMan
Try playing the game. First time you get stuck in a corner with a werewolf literally grabbing you by the shoulders and ripping your face with its teeth, you'll understand now non viable a normal spear or drawing from a traditional sheathe would be.
@@CtrlAltRetreat yes, werewolf, we've fought those in tight spaces..... No a shorter weapon has no merit over the spear.
@@tarektechmarine8209What are you even saying?
@@RealLifeIronManGood points in general but not here.
Beasts do not die unless drained of blood and regenerate constantly, hence why you want wide mangled wounds. Piercing is ineffective as it creates small clean holes (bullets are useless unless the hunter reaches into the injury and rips); even with the saw spear, you only want to stab to finish the target off as the beasts are so fast that you always need your weapons to be free.
Swords are used against newly scourged people and are not going to work against anything that can corner a hunter.
shad has a multitude of helmets he can wear to protect his head from a weapon that could easily bounce back at his head yet decides not to wear them.
Some would call him a fool. I call him a real man XD
He's a protagonist. Gotta display the face, as only extras wear helmets. We all know armor does nothing anyway.
Hes a naned Warhammer 40k character, he wears the helmet in canon but they remove it for aesthetic reasons
Certainly doable, but will add weight, not to mention keeping the blade stable enough so it doesn't wobble and stays relatively straight enough to lock into it's marginally safer collapsed position...
monster hunter switch axe
I loved Shad's reaction to how effective it was when he didn't give it much of a chance at first
Sooo... burial blade when? this was awesome though. nice work lads!
And yeah, basically “beasts” which are the larger majority of enemies in Bloodeborne, take more damage from serrated weapons.
because they lack armor, and have lots of meat to rip and tear.
You guys are my absolute favorite medievil channle keep up the great work
One of the big gameplay reasons for the transforming weapons is that the collapsed version can be used with one hand, allowing the hunter use a firearm in their offhand.
Additionally, even if that point was rendered moot by some Trick Weapons being already one-handed in either form, the extended mode typically offers either more range or damage at the expense of speed, handling or both.
Only the case for some weapons
Can't wait for the Threaded Cane review!
dawg how tf do u build a threaded cane 💀
As one man once said, "bullets can't hurt the london people, so you need to use the knife"
There is a reason why when you kill a boss the message is Prey Slaughtered.
Another thing is that the weapons are upgraded with blood stone, basically crystallized eldritch god blood, a bit better than a diamond edge.
Ripping and a tearing, ripping and a tearing
You all need to do two things next:
1) Try making a Threaded Cane next. I love that weapon and would love to see someone attempt to make a real life version.
2) Make Shad play Bloodborne. It's so awesome and it's what I'm playing to kill time before the Elden Ring DLC drops.
You made an over sized 1800s Doctor’s amputation Hack saw. Which are terrifyingly effective
18:01 most important moment of the video, PAY ATTENTION SONY!
Majestic! A Shad is a Chad, even in a game!
I love Bloodborne weapons! I'm so excited that you've finally reviewed one. Looking forward to more!
I think Shad is building an apocalypse arsenal and testing what would work
"It's fine, don't worry about it."
"The wheels are a bit wobbly there, Ty."
"I took it for a spin on the freeway, it's fine."
Rip and tear until it is done!
Love the alternative intro much more than the regular. Great channel
So if the spear cleaver had a professionally made lock mechanism you'd find in high quality pocket knives... this thing would be amazing!
If Tyranth is including the DLC weapons when he says "all of them", then hoo boy things are gonna get fun.
That "It will keel" truly made me happy and I think Doug Marcaida loves your videos
Need a Bloodborne weapons part 2, for the hunter axe, Kirkhammer or Ludwig's holy blade
Personally i feel the rifle spear is the most practical of the trick weapons. Its a spear and the folding action allows for a shotgun firearm. Granted i can't imagine the pain of bulding it, but i love it personally.
The nail pin is certainly in keeping with the aesthetic.
if Tyranth ever builds a stake driver mock-up, he neds to pay attention to the shafts on both sides, because there's a neat detail that took me a second to notice
LOL the "dent" in the castle is still there (left of the door from our veiw) Shad improved on his spacial awarness! :)
Very cool!! Love to see it!
This is one of those weapons you could improve into an actual weapon really easily. Would love to see that if anyone has made such a thing.
Then I would point out two other things:
1) The Romans, with armor and shield, had about 1m separation to the next soldier, standing about 2m from soldier to soldier.
But having the ease of carry is worth it if in a pinch the weapon can be used while closed
Tldr the closed fighting style was intended as a last resort if you couldn’t unfold the weapon in time for a fight but the need for ease of carry out weighed the benefits of removing the mechanism
Like with most other weapons the saw spear becomes two-handed in its transformed state, preventing the use of a firearm in the off-hand. Hunters tend to prefer fighting in the closed state and switch to the spear when the situation requires.
@@SethAbercromby The saw spear is still one-handed while extended in game.
I'd LOVE to see you guys cover the Hunters Saif more.
The damn 1h form of moonlight sword, and Ludwig holy goddamn blade
i think some sort of trigger activated clasp for the blade that lets it switch back and forth between positions might make it more practical, since the main problem with the position switching trick weapons just seems to be the give in the joint that controls its position. not sure itd ever be as easy to swap as in the games, but i can see a lot of them becoming much more practical when you dont have to worry that you might accidentally hit yourself with it.
Now I want Shad to play bloodborne. He would both cry and in horror and joy over the castle and gothic design of Bloodborne 😂
"Those weapons do like fun fantasy stuff"
Yharnam denizens: "What the bloody fuck did you just spit out mate????"
14:23 "It would keel"
Doug Marcaida would be proud of you.
Yay! I got recommended this video!
Also that weapon looks epic!
Sawspear was my main weapon in bloodborne. Used it almost all the time in the game. Happy to see it featured in this video.
If your looking for more Bloodborne weapons I'm curious about the Moonlight Blade and it's Replica version.
I have doubts about this very creative weapon, until I saw it wielded in the hands of shad
Tune in next time when Shad makes Tyranth try and build the Whirligig Saw!
I think striking with the serrations works that well because it's like multiple stabs in one, and then they gradually converge until it cuts
wrapping a serrated blade in gauze is a devious way to make use of that serrated section without your opponent knowing
8:02 the safety’s on ol’ Betsy?
That's what I'm afraid of. You go first.
In close position think of it as a brass knuckle you use it in very close combat where you hook it in their face and yes the beast are very fast they can close in on you before you can get into any stance so you have to brawl with it.
Another important detail is that not many enemies in bloodborne wear armor. A lot of exposed flesh.
I love ALL Shadiversity videos!!!! ❤
The most practical Bloodborne weapons are probably the axe and the Moonlight greatsword, one is just a magical sword and the axe you just make the handle longer
And yeah, makes sense sharp serrations are effective lmao specially when are meant for armorless foes like beasts
the most practical bloodborne weapon is the Logarius wheel obviously. or perhaps the kirkhammer. very practical. easy to use.
I'm a simple man. I see Bloodborne, I see Shadiversity, I click.
This episode was awesome. I love seeing results that are unexpected.
