Alpine Style Austrian Food atop a Mountain + Hiking in Salzburg | Day Trip to Gaisberg, Austria

- Join us for a day trip to Gaisberg and a delicious alpine-style lunch atop a mountain! This is one of the easiest day trips from Salzburg and the mountain views are spectacular.
We really wanted to go hiking while we were in Salzburg and Gaisberg proved to be a super easy day trip. Gaisberg is a local mountain in Salzburg located just a few kilometres from the Old Town, and it stands 1,288 meters above sea level.
To get there, we took bus # 151 from Mirabellplatz. It was a 30-minute bus ride and we got off at Zistelalm to hike the rest of the way to the top. There were various trails to choose from all varying in length and level of difficulty. There were some steep trails that lead straight to the top and others that zig-zagged at a lesser incline. Hiking in Gaisberg was very easy and enjoyable, and the best part, was the alpine restaurant on the mountain top!
We ate at Goasn Wirtshaus, where we ordered Marend, a casual snack usually served on a wooden block, that includes a mix of mountain cheeses, cured meats, sausages, lard spreads and bread. This one also had grapes, lingonberries, olives, walnuts, eggs - basically, everything you could possibly want from a snacking board! Aside from that, we also got the Kasnocken (the Austrian version of Käsespäztle) which consists of noodles in a pan with melted cheese and crispy onions. And because we had just climbed a mountain, we also enjoyed two steins of beer! It was the perfect alpine-style lunch and we left more than satisfied.
So, if you find yourself visiting Salzburg and are craving a bit of nature, consider a day trip to Gaisberg!

Oh, I have been to Salzburg many many times as a child with my mother. And we always had a day trip to the Gaisberg. I remember that I always had a Spezi (Cola with Orange Lemonade) at the restaurant while we were waiting for the bus back to town. I am happy that you enjoyed your trip and shared it with us. 💖💖

When I was in Austria in February 2020, I decided against coming to Salzburg and opted for more time in Vienna. Now I can see that that was a mistake! Will need to take the trip back to this beautiful country. Thanks for the video guys!

I loved this video, specially because this is something which is not touristy at all this is what a local person might do on a weekend. And like you said I believe more people would love to explore more of the smaller towns and the unknown places the untouched beautiful nature, but the problem is there is not a lot of information and awareness of how to get there as compared to bigger cities. So since you are exploring all the lesser known places, may be you should start writing about how to find them and more such things to inspire others. I totally agree that they deserve to be seen and experienced. Loved the video. 🙂

We took your advice and checked it out. Great views. We had a meal at the top diner and I had a delicious spinach dumpling. Beer was good too (as always). It was very interesting to watch all of the parasailers fly around.

Thank you guys. I live here in Bavaria just 40 minutes by train to Austria in a town called Prien am Chiemsee. However yet to experience Salzburg. I will definitely explore your adventure there and the food and drinks. Here in Prien is the home of Ludwig II Herrenchiemsee a complex of royal buildings on Herreninsel, the largest island in the Chiemsee lake, in southern Bavaria, Germany. Together with the neighbouring isle of Frauenchiemsee and the uninhabited Krautinsel, it forms the municipality of Chiemsee, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) southeast of Munich.

Great video! I enjoyed that! And understanding doing hikes in nature, but maybe not super hard ones, I strongly recommend "Bergen" in Norway! Not only is it a very interesting middle size city, with very cool vibes, but it is also build upon/surrounded by seven mountains/hills (the biggest beeing roughly 800 Meters high) And it's a coastal city, so you actually get the best of both worlds! 😀

hello, I don't want to be picky, but next time you should definitely eat the Obatzter alone with a good Bavarian pretzel and preferably in the Andechs monastery. Because there is, in my opinion, the best Obatzter I have ever eaten there and the beer from their own brewery is a dream. Be sure to try the elder wheat beer, it's a dream. Thanks Lindsay! We visited in late September and early October when cases were low and the latest variant wasn't an issue. I'm not sure what it is like to be traveling in Europe now to be honest. It may very on a country by country basis.

I am beginning to think that every country has their own version of macaroni and cheese! How did it compare to what you would get at home? I can hike and climb up all day long but my knees throw a fit after a couple of steps down. Getting old is not for the faint of heart but husband suggests it is better than the alternative. I don’t disagree. So I will hike up and ride down.

I've enjoyed seeing the whole experience. Just technically: I think your mic is picking up too much wind. The hike & end of your vid is so much quieter: Anyways, I know what it's like for sound. In what month were you there ?
I live in Salzburg and it must have been summer time or late spring, early fall. From October to April/May the weather is changing a lot and mostly cold. From what I can see people wearing it looks like summer as well, my guess is June or September.
