- Today, we’re taking you on a day trip from Salzburg to the scenic alpine town of Werfen to visit the Austrian Alps. In this video, we'll be hiking (and singing!) our way up the Sound of Music hiking trail, as well as visiting Hohenwerfen Castle, so you're invited to join us on the adventure.
Getting from Salzburg to Werfen was super easy. There is a direct train to Werfen with multiple departures per day. If you miss the direct train like we did, you can ride the train to Bischofshofen and then backtrack one station to Werfen. The travel time is 45 minutes to 1 hour, which makes it a super easy day trip from Salzburg! And the perfect introduction to the Austrian alps.
Our first stop of the day was Hohenwerfen Castle, which was built between the years 1075 and 1078. This is considered the sister castle to Hohensalzburg, which is the fortress overlooking the city of Salzburg. Hohenwerfen sits on a peak high above the Salzach Valley and it’s surrounded by mountains. Ah, the incredible Austrian Alps! We joined a guided tour which gave us access to the chapel, dungeon, arsenal, and the clock tower where you get some truly impressive views of the town below! The one thing to keep in mind before you visit Hohenwerfen Castle is that it's only open from April to November, so it’s not a year-round attraction.
After the castle visit, we hiked the Sound of Music trail overlooking the Austrian alps. Along the way, we came across all sorts of cool art installations connected to songs from the movie. One of the highlights was the rest area with wooden benches that had engraved lyrics from the Sound of Music. The views from that lookout were spectacular. Eventually, we reached an idyllic field, which is where Maria taught the children to sing the Do Re Mi song and they enjoyed a picnic.
Back in town, we ate at Stiege N° 1 and the food was outstanding! Sam had the schnitzel with potatoes, and I ordered the pork roast with bread dumplings and vegetables. This meal was one of the highlights of our trip to Austria.
Overall, we really enjoyed this day trip from Salzburg to Werfen, and we hope this video gave you an idea of how to do this trip on your own!

I loved Austria. Very avoidable driving around for 10 days and sliding over to the Italian side too. So pretty and nice. The road side inn were cheap and the food fantastic.

This brings back some memories. We used to go to Austria a lot with the family when I was young. Used to stay near Bramberg, which is about 80 kilometres upstream on the Salzach. I would also recommend the Ice Caves they are really beautiful. If you like hiking and want to do a bit more in Austria I would go for some hikes between Mittersill and Krimml. Some great valleys in that area.

I am always surprised about people talking about "The Sound of Music". I have never seen this film, and I do not know any German or Austrian who has seen it. Funny, isn't it? 😎
Ahhh, it's one of my favourite films! I like to rewatch every couple of years and sing along to the soundtrack. 😄🎶
Actually no one in Austria (or Germany) cares about Sound Of Music. The movie is not really known or popular here. 😬
Tourism makes a lot of money with Sound Of Music things - like the trail or bus tours etc. That’s it. 🤷♂️
I'm Slovak and I've also never heard about it until I saw North American travellers talk about it in their videos...and I do like old movies...just it seems this one never really made much dent in this general area:,)

Having spent a lot of time in Austria during my working days I would definitely recommend a trip to the nearby Kitzsteinhorn peak out of Kaprun. You can also talk about the worst funicular disaster in history when it was ascended by a long tunnel ride to the half way point up and killed many people. It caught fire in the middle of the ride and there were little to no safety precautions. I had ridden it numerous times.

Not only the lovely movie "The Sound of music" was filmed at or around Werfen. In the action packed WWII spy movie "Where eagles dare" (with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood) from 1968 the fortress Hohenwerfen played a significant role and parts of the movie were filmed on location.
I came from your Munich food tour video but enjoyed once again your very personal approach and the more european than north american view on your visited sites.

Incredible view. We're supposed to visit that area in July 2020 but because of COVID, everything has been placed on 'PAUSE' 🙄. Hopefully in 2 years time we can travel again out of Australia.

Thanks for this nice video! :) By the way, this sausage is called "Bratwurst". Its made from pork and is really popular in Austria. There is even a "Bratwurst Sonntag" (Bratwurst Sunday) once a year. :D Usually we eat this sausage with "Sauerkraut". Bratwurst with Sauerkraut is a popular meal in Austria.

That sounds fun! We didn't do a guided tour of 'The Sound of Music' filming locations, but we did stumble upon a few around town on our own.
