Oba Ewuare of Benin was a king of the ancient Benin kingdom in present day Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The Benin Kingdom were trading partners with the Portuguese in the 1400s during the time of Oba Esigie, he became fluent in Portuguese language because of the trade and relationship the kingdom had with the Portuguese

Currently the wealthiest tribe in Africa is the Royal Bafokeng Nation located in the North West Province, South Africa. The king is called King Leruo Molotlegi. The Benin Kingdom/Empire was in Nigeria, with the Oba ruling from Benin city in present day Edo State of Nigeria. During the glorious years of the empire, it stretched up to the present day country called Benin.
The present day country, Benin changed its name, after independence, from Dahomey and took up the name of the Benin empire that it was part of sometime in their history. I understand Dahomey means "Land of Snakes" so they wanted a change.
So we still have Benin, just a city now in Nigeria and Benin, the country. And anytime the discussion is about the Benin empire, they are talking about the old Benin Empire from Nigeria. The Oba of Benin now, a traditional ceremonial stool, covers only Benin city in Nigeria.
Same thing as Ghana did. Ghana, uptill its independence was known as the Gold Coast.
After its independence, it took up the name Ghana, which was a glorious empire, Ghana Empire, covering the area from today's Guinea to Mali to Mauritania and Western Sahara. Today's republic of Ghana was not part of the Old Empire of Ghana.

Ever wondered 🤔 If Africans were not educated how did they know the value of Gold or how to Mine the precious minerals as a lot of them are dressed in Precious metals and the Art works had a lot of metal sculptures, craft works /metallurgy.
African Traditions promotes mutual respect and doesn't encourage pride. The Status of people back then was shown through, how many kids, wife ...they had and how they were maintained, to Educational level and achievements through hardwork, which would earn the achievers a higher respect and a place in the society.

You know I always say this. Nandi was one of the most beautiful woman in the land, Senzangakhona was a handsome light skin dude, and we have Henry Cele has a result?????? No offense to Babu Cele he's a legend, but he doesn't represent Shaka's real image ----- AND there's a huge reason why they had to impersonate him as this "dark skin angry guy"

Appreciate this. I would have personally preferred it being a list of African Rulers, as many of the native titles Europeans associate to the English word "King", are not differentiated between a male or female ruler natively (e.g. iNkosi or Kgosi is also used by women, yet translated to King or Chief).
This falls into the trap of feeding into the misconception of African rulers in general (that it was always hereditary, male monarchs or patrilineal).
My personal list (no particular rank):
    • Mansa Musa
Real Name: Mansa Musaa who was Mandin Mansa
    • Dingane Zulu
Real Name: iSilo uDingane kaSenzangakhona who was iSilo samaBandla, iNkosi yakwaZulu
    • Yaa Asantewaa
Real Name: Ohemaa Nana Yaa Asantewaa who was Ejisuhene ma Ejisuman
    • Menes/Narmer
Real Name: Nesut Hor-Narmer, who was Nesut Kemet
    • Amanirenas
Real Name: Amnirense Qor Kadake who was Qes Qor
    • Shaka Zulu
Real Name: iSilo uSgidi kaSenzangakhona who was iSilo samaBandla, iNkosi yakwaZulu
    • Ovonramwen
Real Name: Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi who was Oba n'Edo
    • Tin Hinan
Real Name: Tamenokalt Tin Hinan who was Tamenokalt Kel Rela
    • Moshoeshoe
Real Name: Morena Moshoeshoe who was Morena e Moholo oa Basotho
    • Kofi Karikari
Real Name: Kumasehene/Asantehene Otumfuo Kofi Karikari who was Asantehene ma Asanteman
    • Nyatsimba Mutota
Real Name: Mwene Nyatsimba Mutota who was Mwene we Mutapa
