There haven’t been any known cases of illness or death associated with these blowfish. It might be that this species is not as poisonous as the types eaten in Japan.

It is popular in Japan mainly because of the subtle taste, a lot of Japanese people really likes the taste. And that explains why the slices are very thin. As the fish is chewy, if the slice was too thick, the consumer will concentrate on the chewing, and not catching the subtle flavour. It’s not like western food where foods usually have strong flavours. Many Japanese foods have subtle flavours.
Incredibly expensive and it is chewy and subtle. Forget that. I want it to blow me out of the water like scotch bonnet peppers, sweet tarts or cheesecake if I am paying that much.

I would personally go for farmed fugu; I understand that fugu’s toxicity stems from its ingestion in the wild of bacteria which produces the tetrodotoxin. In the sterile environment of a fish farm the fugu is raised toxin free even if the flavour can’t compare to wild caught.

I would personally go for farmed fugu; I understand that fugu’s toxicity stems from its ingestion in the wild of bacteria which produces the tetrodotoxin. In the sterile environment of a fish farm the fugu is raised toxin free even if the flavour can’t compare to wild caught.
