- Róisín Dubh 🥀🎵🌊
I sometimes forget to sing for play and how important that is to keep my love for it going…and keep perfectionism at bay. Because Irish music is the first music I ever started to sing, it feels like a recalibration to check in with my musical home base. And when I’m trying out a new song (in this case, one I’ve always loved but never felt ready to sing) is when I’m the most vulnerable as an artist, the most susceptible to flaws, and sometimes, therefore, the most connected. Connected to what, I’m not sure-the song? Myself? That “other” plane where the ancestors are singing? I don’t know, but to sit down after a long recording session for work, turn up the gain and verb, and sing something to close out my “practice” just feels right. Here’s the first verse of “Róisín Dubh”, an iconic anthem of a song (and a marathon of breath and big feelings). The song has been on my brain ever since Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh released her new album “Róisín Reimagined” with the Irish Chamber Orchestra earlier this year-an entire album of Sean-nós songs arranged for singer and orchestra by 6 different composers-sublime! If you have the teensiest bit of Irish (or you’ve been to the bar in Boston), you know that the title means “Dark Rose”, but it ALSO means Ireland. (For what woman in an Irish song doesn’t represent Ireland herself?😂) It’s a common phenomenon in the canon, but famously so for this piece. The first line is “A Róisín, ná bíodh brón ort fé'r éirigh dhuit…” (Róisín, don’t have sorrow for all that has happened to you.) It is a very special song, and it never fails to move me. I hope this clip of it gives you a moment of peace🤍

The melody of Róisín Dubh starts in the earth beneath your feet; then, very slowly, it gathers and rises up through the body where it grows until it reaches the voice of someone like Madelyn who gives it soul and breathes life into something that becomes perfectly created . . . simply by being.
I am certain that when we cross to the other side, we will be hearing this voice.
Sounds like what I expect to hear in Fiddler's Green, simply beautiful !!
If heaven itself had a voice, it would sound like this.
It is prayer. Perfectionism is difficult to let go of as a musician, but it is the soul of the music--our passion for it expressed through the love with which we perform it--that releases it to seek out that which is above, around, and beyond us. Quality must always be pursued, but without love it is not music. Sincere thanks for sharing this!
You have expressed it so well!! Very very relatable! Thank you so much!
My mother was laid to rest with this beautiful song
This spoke straight to my soul, calling to my Irish blood, tears streaming down my face.Thankyou this is beautiful 😍.💚💚💚💚
Nearly every time I hear Gaelic sung this well I feel like I'm being called home.
Magnificent! Best version of this song that I have ever heard,
💚🕊💫
Breathtakingly beautiful.
So lovely... That was really special, thank you.
Damn, Gurl. That was other-worldly, it is so beautifully done. Goosebumps!
Too short!!! For me, it's the nicest version of this gorgeous song. I was looking for a sung version of it, because I'm learning Irish and try to sing Irish songs for pronunciation purposes in Irish now and noticed that this is more often heard as an instrumental and wanted to know what it sounds like when it's sung. I found several versions. Ach is breá liom conas a chanann tú é sin! I stumbled across it by accident and this can make you start learning sean-nós singing, so, so, beautiful. I'm going to follow you on Instagram as well to not miss anything anymore.
I only discovered Madelyn yesterday but I can't think of a single Celtic singer who has better pitch and control. Amazing
Roisin Dubh is one of my favourite Irish songs and Madelyn's is the best version i have heard , well done girl .
She sings it well but doesn't sing it with that true old Irish Gael tone that can only come from a pure Gael born and bred in Éire. There's many amazing version and this is not the best version she singing. Try listen to old tone without any fancy modern music equipment ruclips.net/video/hdskdLV4MWY/видео.htmlsi=vLxXBNIBOMpkGQ7u
Absolutely gorgeous.
Such a beautiful song so beautifully sung x
Beautiful! This speaks to my blood. I have Irish and Scottish in my ancestry. You couldn't tell by looking at me, but my maternal grandmother's side comes from the McCoy line of the famous McCoy and Hatfield feud. Lol. And I get the perfectionist thing. I think being ok with mistakes and vulnerability can help a performer's confidence. Learning to laugh at ourselves when we mess up also helps. 💛
Absolutely Charmed My Queen 👸 💚🥰💚
I don't know the lyrics but it makes me want to travel the world
So moving, very Irish traditional! Do the whole song, please.

A Róisín ná bíodh brón ort fé'r éirigh dhuit:
Tá na bráithre 'teacht thar sáile 's iad ag triall ar muir,
Tiocfaidh do phárdún ón bPápa is ón Róimh anoir
'S ní spárálfar fíon Spáinneach ar mo Róisín Dubh.
Little Rose, be not sad for all that hath behapped thee:
The friars are coming across the sea, they march on the main.
From the Pope shall come thy pardon, and from Rome, from the East-
And stint not Spanish wine to my Little Dark Rose.
Madelyn, caithfidh tú an t-amhrán ar fad a chloisteáil le ceolfhoireann iomlán
makes my DNA home sick
Exquisite! ❤❤❤
