Vincent - Don McLean Cover by MonaLisa Twins
    -------------
Vincent Van Gogh died 132 years ago today. Yet his art still gets admired, analysed, taught about, talked about ... and sung about in one of the most beautiful songs ever written. "Vincent" by Don McLean.
When we picked this song as a potential new Duo Session for the MLT Club last year and started practising, it quickly became clear that we didn’t need a second guitar. We needed something else!
We came up with the idea of trying out an accordion … A day later and we were ordering a second hand “Pietro” off the internet for £50. It was nearly 75 years old and in dire need of some attention! Our Papa Rudi took it upon himself to breathe some new life into it and make it playable again. 🙌
Many RUclips tutorials and hours of practising later, this is how it turned out ...
    Hugs,
    Mona & Lisa

I’ve listened to many, many covers of this song and it’s always just been a continuous streak of covers that have never been able to even come close to capturing the raw emotion and the tragic beauty that lies within Don McClean’s original version. But ladies, well, you’ve broken that streak today. Absolutely spellbinding work! 🖤🧡

I'm just so happy that the algorithm sent me to this channel. I've listened to this cover, and "Both Sides Now" and was moved by MonaLisa Twins' singing and playing these songs in a very authentic way. I was an adolescent at the time, and I still feel that same intense beauty and melancholy in my 60s as I did as a kid listening to these songs. Thanks for keeping these songs alive as you express your own love of them through your singing and playing.

Yet another 72 year old who bought the album on release and fell in love with this song. It's all the more poignant after my wife and I visited the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. The Mona Lisa Twins demonstrate the depth of their talent with such a sensitive rendition. Their musicianship on all their songs is impeccable. Mona's "Starry Night" blouse was a nice touch as well.

Young women, you do much honor toward your predecessors, Beatles included, Don McClean included. In those short minutes, you moved me, truly, without big bands or whirling lights, the way Don McClean did when I saw him sing this at the Winnepeg Folk Festival in 1984. Never doubt the true power of your perception and expression, for these are marvels in a land of showy pinwheels and computer tricks.

"Vincent" is one of my all-time favourites and I usually dislike cover versions with a passion, but I absolutely *LOVE* this one! And you were right, it did need something else than a second guitar. The accordion sounds beautiful and somehow captures a bit of what things might have been like when Vincent was alive. Your cover was so beautiful it nearly made me cry. The only reason I didn't was because I had to sing along, but I did it around the big lump I had in my throat. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

If you don't know the story, it's in the video description how Mona and Lisa decided the song needed an accordion, which they then bought online, refurbished, and turned over to Mona to learn to play. All to make this song as beautiful as they could. The MonaLisa Twins don't perform covers to show off their voices or their playing, they do it to show off the original.

Mona and Lisa, I think I have something special to share with you. The first three words of this song were on the birthcard of my son. He was born two months too early. We had some shaky early years with him, but he got through it all. 21 years later, he is sitting next to me after a week in which we busked on the streets of Roermond with our favorite songs on guitar, amongst which songs of the Beatles and CSN&Y which we both love. We sang those songs with all of our souls and we had so much fun together. I am so proud of him. His name.....is Vincent.

No need to get excited, it’s just another MonaLisa song in their usual high quality… hold on…
    THIS IS BLOODY OUTSTANDING‼️!‼️!‼️
These two women get me every time! Once I think I heard it all, out they come with yet another twist of an idea, told in yet another astounding way. If I didn’t know any better, I would have thought that they wrote this song, it sounds that original…

This sparse acoustic method shows the two of you at your very best. Your harmonies are excellent and the gentle straight forward style suits the two of you so well. This is my favorite of the songs you have performed.

    Hiya Mona & Lisa,
This is the most beautiful cover of this song I've ever heard, the nearest to the soul moving original. I met Don back in the mid 80s when I did lighting for him at the Cambridge folk festival, a dream of mine come true from loving his music to painting it with colour on stage. Thank you both for this video, no actualy thank all four of you. Perfect.
    Stay safe, Steve...

I like how Lisa's accent sneaks out a bit here and there, just enough to add a bit of charm to the singing.

One of Mrs the 45156's favourite songs - she's been a Don McLean fan for longer than you twins have been gracing this planet with your musical brilliance - if she thinks it's brilliant, then there is no more to say, other than I fully agree with her - wonderful does not start to define this cover - the accordion is totally inspired

I just love Mona’s Starry Night outfit. Beautiful interpretation that makes me sit still and think for a while in silence after the last chords end. Much love from Canada. -Diane, Vancouver, Canada. TuAU02/22. 12:47 am

Precise and understated. Perhaps that's why the emotion is so powerful. It isn't forced or faked. This is a beautiful exhibition of musical artistry.
