      It is by far the most realistic horror scenario, and one of the scariest - people depending on you, whether that's your family, customers, or patients, and you're just trying to help them and live your life as best you can. And it was already difficult and complicated before this got in the way.

      Not really it's actually to get into position to use their claws which can easily split someone open. It's why even some big cats are cautious to get close. You wouldn't think that but it makes sense as they use those claws and strong arms to bust open termite mounds which is like breaking apart cement with your bare hands. Shame it isn't as effective on demons

    One trend I've noticed with this developer's games is that each situation is effectively "Domestic Horror". The characters aren't entering an abandoned house or some spooky woods, they're at their home or workplace trying to fend off or work around a hostile invader in, what should be, somewhere safe. It makes it easier to empathise with the characters you play because they've not done anything wrong, they've just been targeted.

    • @katziliaf
      @katziliaf 2 года назад +232

      I think the trend of domestic horror is overall quiet popular nowadays. Puppetcombo's games are popular, but their most popular was about a Gas station dealing with a creepy stalker/serial killer. Night of the Consumers became a hit, being about customer service & rude customers.
      Overall, Horror always relects what people fear atm. A big abandoned mansion might be still spooky. But -how many do you know in RL? Hell, I'm from a European country and we normally live in apartements, not houses. Even in our Suburbs. Gimme a story like "Man from the window" and I'm like -shit! Where would I hide in that situation? (especially tired, with my brain fried after work)

    One of the other things about these games this developer makes, is the odd amount of wholesomeness they add into their endings. Especially with the recent two they've made. It's such a refresher from most horror or dark games that settle with a 50/50 of complacency. It's very much fairytale storybook vibes and i'm digging it to be honest.

It depends, some are better for it (Imagine if SOMA had a happy ending lmao) and others are fantastic for their more bittersweet/hard earned happy endings. Amnesia and Silent Hill have pretty great happy endings as well, but those very same games HAVE multiple endings and require effort by the player, don't expect a happy ending if you act like a monstrous human being.

    I really love how a consistent theme among the developer’s games is that the hero of the game is always some hard-working, down on their luck every day dude and in the end, the “bad guy” just ends up being redeemed in the good endings. I hope the developer keeps this up. It’s a kind of wholesomeness I enjoy.

    I wonder if Jane Doe is supposed to be an immigrant? Doesn't want to give her name, didn't want to be sent to the hospital at all, she's the only sea creature among things that all live on land (technically because Axolotls are fresh water), and she's the only one who doesn't seem to speak fluently at any point. I wish they'd tied up that loose end, but that's my best guess.

      @MM-jf1me Год назад +29

      I don't see it as a loose end; I think it's very clear she's an undocumented immigrant: she only went to the hospital because her employer made her go (her financial security was threatened); she was afraid that if she went to the hospital she would be separated from her family (while everyone was still alive); she spoke in broken English; government didn't care about her disappearance because she never existed to begin with in their eyes -- this is also why neither Doctor Eda nor Nurse Morten face legal issues when she disappears. It makes me wonder whether her family ever even knew where she disappeared from -- this is obviously a tiny hospital in a more rural area that doesn't ask their patients many questions: is Jane Doe even a local to the area or did she travel here from a larger city (which has a larger immigrant population and more job opportunities, but also larger risk of getting caught and deported by the government)? It's sobering to think of all the people who go missing every single day and whose families will never know what happened to them.
      I see that the idea of Jane Doe being an undocumented worker wasn't a universal conclusion, but I think Zed gave us all the pieces to understand her current situation and why she's in the hospital on this night -- it didn't need to be spelled out in the story itself when we had so many clues, plus Zed gets to sidestep political discussions by not labeling her and just letting her motivations and her actions lead players to their own conclusions.
      I feel like my comment is probably reading a bit more negatively than I mean it to -- I'm glad Alyxandra mentioned this character's situation and brought it to the attention of other commenters. I really like Zed's style of writing characters -- we can understand so much about them based on such little given information because Zed writes about people we know.

      Like in the previous game about the shadow hunter, the owner of the dinner basicly made the place feel suffering for the sake of saving money to make it the next day. The bad endings where never the perspective of the character you lose, but in the perspective of the characters left behind with the pain of losing you.
      All of this while they get to have their cheesecake on the side too. Lol

Not only that- But even the rendering, movement and code of the game seems really polished, they use the actual models when you're in perspective of them to make the proportions fit, and make the time to add reflections. Honestly this is overall a good game developer that I might actually like more than other famous game developers. These games are so simple, yet so fulfilling.

Just as how not everything has to be optimistic and upbeat, not everything has to be pessimistic and grim. And actually, the ending was a mixture of both, since we can see how it practically went downhill for Vermander financially, he practically ruined his family's name and business, and he has to work ends meet. It's a bittersweet ending, that's more sweet than it is bitter, basically.

That or the fact that includes electronics for a generational curse means that they were probably man made restrictions to ensure that the demon hadn't backfired on them as easily. So once the contract was null it didn't care and just wanted revenge. Either way probably some form that it can get in

Old people keeping their establishments from running down? A scary looking guy who's actually a loving family man? A lot of us have met those kinds of people we meet at least once in our life, especially (as you said) in closer knit communities like small towns.

    What really adds to empathy are the little details about the characters’ lives that you pick up when talking to them, delivering even more details when they die is like a punch to the gut. I personally found that surprising for an indie game like this. Usually, there’s focus on the monster, its behavior, or the nature of their circumstance, and nothing else. But in this game, the characters have lives both before and after the events of the game. And they have distinguishable personalities too. I admire that in any story-telling medium, so it’s kinda cool to see in an indie horror game of all things. It shows that the creator really cares about the characters while effectively getting the audience to care as well.
