+DeFactoLeader I'm so glad that this is the fisrt comment I see when I scroll down. Nothing about his potential as a rival character, nothing about preferred lines over what was used in the final game, just... "what a delicious voice". I'm so, so glad.
For as short as his appearance was, I really love Oscar. For me, it's how honest, kind and trustworthy he is. In a world full of evil, where everything wants you dead, that one person at the beginning always stays with me. Even before he's about to die, he still thinks of others.
Solaire is the chosen undead, or a chosen undead, as if you help him, he defeats gwyn and puts his summon sign there, but by clearing the sunlight maggots, you save him, or, by not clearing them, as his dimension is connected to yours, they are not dead, and becomes infested
Amonst all NPCs, Oscar is definitely one of my favorites. Therefore whenever I start a new game I travel back to the Undead Asylum to kill his hollowed cadaver as a way of freeing him from the curse. I then carry his crest shield in my equipment though never using it, so that somehow He too pilgrims to Lordran. Beware of hope.
***** Lol no need to feel bad or anything m8. It's been discussed for quite some time in the community. It's one of those questlines that were scrapped from the game aside from that Shiva betrayal questline, and the fact that Pris is supposed to be the Dark Souls' equivalent of Pancake Maiden from DeS.
DUUUuuuuude. The dialogue at the end...that would have been such a cool storyline. Specially for new players, they would be like "Who the hell is kathee?! what does he keep calling me a fool? What is this about becoming a dark lord?" Oscar becoming jealous of the player...so cool.
Oscar would be the only character more awesome than Solaire and Onion bro. Because he is will allways be your equal in the end. Seeking the same endings as you do.
This is pretty damn interesting. Sounds like originally the Dark Souls story was going to have you and Oscar in parallel roles. Whichever serpent you chose to ignore would be the one Oscar would listen to and as a result he'd ultimately become your enemy. Even if all along the journey you work together with him with the same goal in mind. WHY DID YOU CUT THIS OUT OF THE GAME?!!?!?!
Sometimes i feel like they are trying their best to avoid making their games perfect BECAUSE ITS ALMOST ALL THE TIME THE CUT CONTENT THAT WOULD MAKE THE GAME A 10/10
well instead of kind of friend, rival and end game boss that fight you after you defeat gwyn. Oscar role actually shift to a guy who get you out of jail and then die to a first boss...yep I see nothing wrong with that
they did that because having someone like that as a "companion" throughout the game would've most likely ruined the tone of the game, as in, the whole lonely journey in an unknown land where you can't really trust anyone. Or they cut it because of time constraints, who knows?
You know all those fan drawings of Oscar defeating Artorias, or chilling with Solaire, or just being an all around hero/badass? I prefer to think those are canon. The only reason Oscar dies in the asylum is so that the player can carry on his legacy and be an even greater hero then he is.
He's got a really calm and relaxing voice. As this chivalric character that they tried to paint him as, it really suits him. Oscar's the thing all Lawful Good characters in D&D strive for.
How do we know that we are not the antagonist of the story, and Knight Oscar truly was the chosen undead? After all, he drops the key for you in the beginning and makes you inherit his quest, and according to this unused content, he pursues either the new age of fire ending or the dark lord ending, just as we do as we progress through the game. Makes you think, what else would have changed if Knight Oscar did play a bigger role?
I prefer "Thank you for hearing me out" better than the "Well now you know" line that they went with. It just felt so clunky when I heard him say it.. I was like "But I don't know! 'Ring the bell' is all you said. That's very little info to go on." I didn't even know about the second bell until after I got to Firelink, and still didn't really /know/ what was going on until I rang the second bell and talked to Frampt. Until then I was like "I dunno, the story is about ringing bells or some shit." Not to mention that the "now you know" line makes it sound like I was specifically looking for his info, when really he's just some dude who wanted me to listen to him. Having him thank me just would have felt more organic to the over-all conversation.
Till this day, I still don't think From had quite replicate the same level of charms that the characters from DkS1 had, their voice...their dialogues, just all feel so precious and magical in such a lonely journey.
Why the fuck would they cut this?? He sounded like he was going to be as important of a character as Solaire and Siegmeyer. I wonder if they were pressed for time to complete the game? Too bad, fighting Oscar would have been so much better if they built it up more. Not just the lame re-encounter you get when you return to the asylum.
**minor spoilers** As much as I love Oscar, I’m going to have to respectfully disagree. I agree with their choice to cut Oscar’s content because I don’t think I’d look forward to seeing Oscar throughout the world. Solaire and Siegmeyer had such friendly personalities that it was always good to see them again, and hurt more as you watched them digress. It also has a much more somber tone lore-wise in comparison to the cut content. If he were to live he’d simply help you periodically and turn on you at the last moment. This storyline has kind of become a cliché in video games. Instead, what seemed to be the poster child of dark souls falls at the very beginning of the game. In his last moments he passes the torch of his quest to you, enabling and empowering you to become what he could not. But then again, at the same time he damns you to horror, regret, and apathy when you realize what your actions have wrought.
the ending was great. Glad they did cut Oscar. The thing is, everyone what have "figured" out the ending to be told to them, depending on your last action AND Oscar talking to you. The last moments would have changed from WTF ending to "oh im fighting oscar". Most people beat the game (first time) not knowing the plot / lore. When you look into the lore you find out that you the player will lose either way. Nothing more than a pawn.
What's weird is that Solaire kind of followed the same Suit as Oscar. He was supposed to be a kind of "opposite" of your decisions in the game and they cut that concept out as well.
I really wish that Oscar was like an unsummonable npc in game but would have certain quests where he follows you/you follow him. An example of a shared timeline in the lore if you will.
The ending of the game was even more dark. It was to end with Oscar showing you that whatever ending you chose you were just a pawn of the serpents. They are playing a game they cannot lose, if you light the fire they win, if you extinguish the fire they win. The game is called Dark Souls it is not lively it does not end well at the end the darkness wins all you can do is stall it.
No, the whole lore is that lord gwyn didn't want to give up his empire to the age of dark, which was supposed to come no matter what as seen in dks 2. They win if you keep it lit. The humans win if you put it out because they were created by the dark. Lord gwyn and his kind need fire for power.
How have I not known about these dialogues that were left out?! This is amazing. You get to kind of see all the things that FromSoft were thinking while in development.
AARGH They got rid of all the awesome stuff from the game! They got rid of Shiva's betrayal, they got rid of basically an entire character (Oscar), what else did they throw away that I haven't listed?
I imagine that every philosopher, scientist, humanist, moralist and faithful man that has ever live on this earth and has left behind an incomplete work or an unfinished task that, on his own vision, if finished, would change the world in a possible rightful way of progress or prosperity to anyone, i think that this message is the one given to us, the alive, the "unkindled". It's so sad to think of it like this, imagine yourself unable to fulfill a dream-like vision or an investigation of nature's behaviour or a scientific research left incomplete because death came before you think it would or maybe an illness or a disease strike and your life work turns to dust, as your hope. I imagine that is what oscar represents, the one unable to fulfill a noble mission, failure may come to anyone but not to the predestined to fulfill it, if the one who has come with it's idea or the original designer can't. Such sadness it's well expressed by it's voice actor. "Now you know... And i can die with hope in my heart" Fucking overwhelming goddamn! And, when you hit him, the way he moans and tries to breath and grasp to life to ask you "why?" but he dies as you stand right in front of him, in complete silence or if you are one of those cold fuckers that hit him and flees the room without even hear him, leaving him death wounded, to rot alone as he feels the darkness of resurrection engulfing what's left for his former self, aware of his destiny, to roam across earth dying and killing without even knowing, to finally, rest as others "corpses" like those naked bodies with items that are found everywhere, such knowledge left him mentally shattered as hollowness and oblivion overtake his proudly memories, is essence lost for ever in the void of oblivion, being killed by the one you help to escape as you see a spark and, obviously, with truly full faith trusted in the chosen undead prophecy, on the only undead that doesn't behave like a hollow in the whole prison, the "destiny" resource of the hero in every history writted. After knowing that you aren't a hollow, he's astonished by the fact that he is not a threat and you still kill him, you may think he see this as a mercyful act of kind to a dying knight, but after hearing it's plea to link the fire he says that leaving him there alone it's better for him as dead it's near. So, stabbing him it's truly evil and from a hollow forbiddable due his lack of reason, but an undead is, by terms, fully conciouss of his actions, killing him is seeing, by oscar, as a truly despictable, wretched act of pure evil. When he ask himself "why?" as he fades may be the most saddest death dialogue of all characters.
There wasn't enough assistance from NPCs in battle in Dark Souls, the only time was with Siegmeyer, and that was short-lived. Fighting through the forest with Oscar would've been awesome.
I like how he was supposed to help you in the forest in his physical for. I've noticed that, unlike demon's souls, NPC's in this game only interact with the environment in phantom form, but completely ignore them otherwise (save for Siegmeyer in a scripted event)
im so glad that they removed his laugh, without it, he felt trustwhorthy, honest, serious, deep, add the laugh and he would have been just another maniac or a solaire wannabe
I feel sorry for Oscar. He asks you to carry on his legacy but by the time you kill Gwyn you will probably have forgotten him and chosen Dark Lord ending instead of carrying on the Light he wanted.
hopefully because that would have been pne hell of a twist if say oscar betrays you at the end (hence his unused lines at the end of the video) and him accompanying you on the journey would have been sweet
See, what's interesting is that his dialogue suggests that Frampt doesn't feed everyone the same chosen undead nonsense, meaning that maybe the player character really does have some sort of inherent fate to confront Gwyn outside of the serpent's influence and that the serpents are actually somewhat more trustworthy than they appear to be.
holy shit!!! They were really really designing his story really in-depth! By the sounds of it he would get to the point where he in his world has also killed the four kings?! (That makes me wonder HOW THE FUCK did he get beaten up by the Asylum demon in the first place???) Freaking hell... Oscar is one of my favourite characters actually (i know its weird) I just wish that they made him a bigger part in the game... also it sounds like he would help you in the forest... first time forest was bch
That makes sense, but then again, I'd say getting smashed over the head with a great club onto the ground so hard you do a front flip would break some of your insides as well.
It appears he would leave the asylum and find you in firelink shrine, then help you to fight the hunters in the forest, and finally become an antagonist servant of the opposite serpent that you chose to follow.
I like to imagine Oscar was going to do basically everything you do, but he fucked up and got killed, so thats why he is so desperate for you to take his place.
This goes to show you that you can't trust those damn serpents, I see the player character as just some poor patsy who went on a quest that was someone else's and no matter what your being played like a violin by one of those serpents, I hated beating the game knowing that I've done what one of those guys have asked me to do
If this character had survived it would have been an awesome story where you were friends but then were betrayed. I think it would've benefitted the game
Woah woah woah. Are you SHITTING me? Oscar had a more important role in the game this entire time, and FROM decided to kill him off?! Dammit FROM! Why?!?!

aw.... man he would have been like your rivel and have more life in the world of darksouls
This is so much ti take
They're in the dvdbnd files.
I like to imagine Oscar was going to do basically everything you do, but he fucked up and got killed, so thats why he is so desperate for you to take his place.
He would've been an ally that always comes after you, and in the end he would chose the opposite ending you chose and you'd have to fight him.
my favorite npc
Because Oscar wasn't the chosen undead. Also, I just realized that Solaire basically took over the "Bro" role Oscar had, complete with fighting him.
They still should've kept Gwyn as a boss, but after you beat him Oscar ran into the room and tried to stop you.
we need a mod to put this cut content into the game
You end up having to fight Lautrec, but he was still good to have as an ally.
Why?!?!
you dont die, theres an animation and you magically get caught. You Don't Have To Talk To Frampt
Maybe I’m insane but I feel like he may have the same voice actor as Artorias.
