Fake news. Ocean covers 71% of earth surface. They are talking about turning the desert green by water from land to atmosphere recycling. Rain comes from water evaporation. The water from land evaporate to become clouds, the clouds spread throughout atmosphere due to wind and dispersion. When the rain comes down again, 71% of the rain would land in the ocean. That is a net loss of 71% of the water evaporated from the ground. Eventually you will have a desert because the water that evaporates from the ground, every time you only get 29% coming down as rain on the ground.
Desertification is a major problem in Australia too. The La Nino we experienced in summer 2023-2024 was devastating, and multiple forests were impacted - multiple dead trees are scattered through both urban and rural areas because of it. It's all a symptom of degraded soil quality that isn't able to absorb rainfall. I know a lot of groups are working hard to rebuild more resilient spaces, and I can only hope the momentum continues to pick up. I think Australia would be very wise to take note of projects like these ones in Africa! And i think something to take note of in all this, the results of projects like these can be amazing in as little as 5 years. It goes to show that life doesn't really need that much to get going again, just the right foundation.

What I mean is that local councils and governments in Aus should take note of this practice and try applying it in areas impacted by desertification / to try and reverse it. (Though it's wishful thinking given the latter's track record for acting on climate change)

These people have seen some much suffering in the last few generations, the fact that they have the ability to remain civil is nothing but commendable. Additionally, they are fighting an impossible problem here. And solving it. Humans truly can do anything. The Green wall project shows that, even without proper funding, without stable government, without modern tools, we still can make significant progress.

The African green wall endeavor will definitely work, as long as NGO’s work hand-in-hand, with local folks to create their own projects to which they have a sense of ownership. Permaculture has a role in this grand project. You may want to do a complete video on the good news of Permaculture spreading throughout the world, healing land, and increasing food production.
Actually some numbers of planted trees that were mentioned are devastatingly small numbers. They seem like big numbers, but actually are not. Like Olympic Forest project has planted 70 000 trees in less than a year... For comparison, our local forestry authority planted 21 million trees in 2024, and I am from quite a small country and they do this every year.
Its not just trees planted though, there is also cropping and natural regeneration. Other places are using clay balls with seeds inside. Mostly hardy acacia trees. And once the process gets rolling nature joins in by itself.
These places can’t support a sudden planting of millions of trees there’s just not enough water to sustain that as trees get planted though underground water tables will restore and more trees will be able to be planted and these areas aren’t supposed to be dense forests anyway
When the people around these projects realise how well they the practices work hopefully they do lots more themselves water and cool is a extremely good investment for a comfortable old age 🤔✌️
I think the GGW initiative was a good start. I do think we can stop the Sahara from encroaching further into the Sahel. The timeframe just has to be adjusted maybe to 2040 so the countries involved can find their own way.
I think once the spread is halted, we can start pushing back into the desert. It was green once, it can be green again. Different kinds of sand make different kinds of glass, glass is great for hothouse/green houses and water collection and storage. Just thoughts.

Friendly note: your math is off somewhere. Three Luxembourgs isn't all that big, and 48km further south per decade times Africa being roughly 7,000km wide times 2.5 decades gets you 840,000km. I'll assume a different width was used and the number you're trying to cite is 600,000km instead, because my math can't be off by several orders of magnitude. You also said the Sahara's creeping 48km south every decade in one place, and 48km south every year in another. If the latter were true, it'd have reached the Niger delta by now. I know that these kinds of nitpicky details are annoying to deal with, but 104k people take you seriously, and may well cite your videos as sources to their friends. Dealing with these nitpicky details is part of the job. Video was your standard good fare in all other respects though, keep up the good work.

Yes we can, and if everyone would start eating only plant based, there would not be a need for cattle using the rare resources. Humans could eat the resources directly, making everything much more effective (about 70%). Not only the people in the the African countries need to change, EVERYONE needs to change. Especially if the expertise of the Dutch would be implemented to even grow crops more efficiently.
Providing an opportunity for people to have access to health, cheep, and nutrition-dense plant-based foods to cut down on meat production would be a positive change in the world… but a lot like electric cars this position solution is not yet cheep enough for people in the developing world or for low income people. I am glad that this project is giving people solutions that can be implemented by the people in the area that is effected rather than assuming that there is a one size fits all solution. 🥰
Plant-based diets require A LOT of nutrient supplements just to survive, to replace the nutrients you would normally get from meat. I'm not sure I want such an artificial diet, nor could a lot of people afford it (pharmaceuticals are expensive in America)

It is not just about numbers planted. This method promotes natural regeneration all by itself. The planted trees are just a boost.
This is a thanks to higher CO2 level in the atmosphere... this project will not be possible is the CO2 level where 350ppm or lower.
