After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this #travelvlog to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! After achieving our new goal of 100 countries before 2020 and all 7 continents, we have no plans to slow down anytime soon, and we are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

A lot of these features could be added to your van - for example, the rear shower, the sliding window screen / shades (Those are available from Dometic - they are the OceanAir screen shades). Tank monitors are easily added with sensors that go on the outside of the tanks. Air Conditioning could be added... You can get a lot of these items at boating or camping stores. And I'm sure it could be done for less than the price delta of the two vans.

You could take what you liked from the Revell and implement it into your van. The bed lift system is $9K, $5k for the window flares, adding more power with panels and batteries for the induction and AC Unit $2-3k, 12v AC unit $4k, legless awning $2.4k, and a bug screen like that one would be $600. It would be an extra $24k but you'd still have everything you like about your van get the things you liked about that van for still less than half the price.

Many of the convenience features in the Revel can also be added to a self-build so if you have the time, skill and energy, self building will get you a heck of a lot of bang for the buck. Also, if you're going to do induction cooktops, realistically you need a big lithium ferrous battery pack, lead-acid just doesn't cut it.

How do I get to heaven? Will my good deeds be measured against my bad deeds? Do I need to be a good person to go to heaven? How do I know if I'm good enough?
Well the bible says no man is good, for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. So how do we get to heaven? Answer: By believing on Jesus Christ who took the punishment for our sin on the cross. There are no amount of good works we can do to achieve salvation because salvation is a free gift of God. We need to humble ourselves, realize we are sinners and that we need a savior.
      John 3:16

One thing to consider: I've seen DIY conversion vans with essentially house cabinets and tile, which are not designed for 60mph collisions and they disintegrate into a flying cloud of razor sharp debris, often riddled with nails. The 150k sprinter is probably better designed for impact given the molded/recessed integration, but that also assumes everything is stowed properly, too.

    • @GregScavezze
      @GregScavezze 3 года назад +21

This is what I came here to say. Not only the safety aspect, but MPG in a purpose built van with lighter materials is going to be better. Tile and real wood cabinets, etc. weigh A LOT and some materials (like tile) aren't built to take the bumping shaking, that is why they use linoleum or vinyl in trailers, etc.

I work for a car company and know some guys who have to test the splitter effects of cherry wood and other expensive woods in the cockpit with crash tests and so on (yes we sell expensive cars).
But I think the most custom build Vans have another travel to stay ratio than professional caravans like shown in this video. If you are able to buy such a van, I think you don't need to live in it.

I also liked seeing the comparison between the Nature's Head and the cassette toilets. I think the Nature's Head is gross to empty - yuck, don't want to deal with that at all. I'm planning to build a plain box with a Home Depot bucket, trash bag, and use coco coir or some natural product to prevent odors. Much easier to throw in the trash at a gas station or store.

Honestly, a lot of the pro features you could install yourself on your existing sprinter van for around $20 or less, I think. For example, you could install an overflow valve to the top of the water tank under the van, and you could add a side-door for the toilet, emptying, and you could use a folding table, and you could either add zippers to the existing bug net or buy a new one with zippers already on, and you could move the manual valve of the water tank to closer to the outside of the vehicle, so you could more easily reach to open or close it, and add sturdier cup holders, and buy or build a table which you can use on the bed (maybe even connecting it with the frame of the vehicle, to not knock it down by accident), add more seatbelts, use a slab of wood to cover the sink to have it usable as table space, add safety locks for the fridge and for shelves, add a folding door to your bathroom, and please add a wind turbine to your vehicle (you would be surprised how useful it is, especially in windy areas, and there are portable and foldable versions).

I'm with you, I just don't see the extra 120k of value over their van. The van used as a base is already over 60k (70k?) and most of the convenience items are easily DIY projects that cost at most a couple thousand in total. Big downside is that a lot of the really cool stuff you can't even use unless you're plugged in.

Hi guys! A couple tips if youre still in the revel or considering it for future trips:)
    (3) if you get a revel after 2020, you can use the AC anywhere without plugging in due to the lithium vs old AGM batteries
    (2) Induction stove do run the battery low, but since the van has an alternator that charges the battery when the car is on, you can cook as LONG as you want if you turn the car on while cooking!
    (1) the couch bed won’t be wobbly if the seat (not the back) cushion is moved to the leg portion of the bed as it has a metal insert to stabilize it.
I love my revel so just wanted to share the love. Its a magically little box with all your problems answered, adventure on!

I was going to come off 75K for the one I finally decided I wanted. Then I came across a "1 year in my van" video where the guy said if he had to do it all over again he'd just buy the van and head to Walmart for an air mattress and start from there. He said he paid so much for things he never uses. I took his advice and now 2 years in my DIY van he was so right. What I thought I'd need and what I actually needed were so different that I can't see me not being in the same boat as the video guy. My total van cost was 21k vs 75k. But the drop down bed is bad to the bone!!!

Yes, the $150k van is nice with some really useful features (many of which you could fit into your van too, if you wanted to), but there is one thing that a professionally build custom van like this can't offer. The satisfaction of building your own van, of being able to say, "I made this with my own hands"! There is something special in living in a van that you've build from scratch. 😉

Thank you for the information. I was a truck driver, I had to constantly manage my portable toilet and always had to have water on hand, it was a daunting task... One thing I have noticed no one is talking about is, {1}. where do you go to re-fill your water tanks? empty the used water from the sink/shower, {2}. How/where do you campers clean your portable toilet? {3}. You made a really good point about parking, yes, you cannot park just anywhere & while the van life community has become more popular now, most jurisdictions have made it much more difficult to park overnight. {4}. the solar panels are great but a nuisance at the same time days you have no power and {5}. you do have to worry about low doses of radiation that a lot of the equipment omits as well as the propane.

Revel was high on our list as well when we were shopping for our van until we saw 2021 Thor Tellaro 20AT with lithium and skybunk. Price, features, layout, sit and sleep 4 comfortably we found the van for us, checks a lot of what we're looking for. Also prefer the Promaster chassis due to price, reliability and parts availability. Also the 21 ft length is perfect, still not too long 24ft and not too short 19ft. Plus it beats the Revel on battery as the Tellaro comes with 11,000 W, 800Ah run AC for 10 hrs. 4x4 is nice but not high on our needs list. At low $100K I think the Tellaro or Sequence is a good compromise between a $40K van and $150K van.

Interesting, We are still in the process of stripping and converting a van. One of the things that I have constantly wondered is why people use so much material to construct storage and shrink their storage capabilities? Why so much is constructed with boards and at least half an inch of thickness? Pull out pantry seems legit and canvas folding ceiling cubbies and cloth or canvas closet would constitute less weight and bulk. Toilet/Shower that is open and usable as a seat until it needs other uses (you don't use it anyway, for the most part. A table that was lockable and angle spring loaded to raise and lower would alleviate your reluctance to restore it to multiple use. So, for my liking, after living in a mobile home my entire youth, RVing, camping, and military I've become very utilitarian and bulk aware. I'm going to attempt to record my experience and present it when I can. Thanks for your video.

One big plus with a DIY van is you can leave out things you will never use. For me I do not camp when it is cold enough to need a heater. But I do tend to camp when it is hot so AC is a plus. An advantage to commercial vans is they have fitted lightweight plastic liners that save a lot of weight over wood panels, saves a lot of fuel and improves handling. Commercial vans are turn key and go.

It will cost but look at military grade 750 watt panels for your roof. They will fit (2 only due to weight) and provide a deck space as you can walk on them. Then you have the flexible 100 to 250 watt panels that you can place around your camp. This will provide the power for an induction cook top. In Europe for 100k you’ll get a 7+ meter long full integrated camper with separate shower and toilet.

Thats true! Im from Spain and here you can buy a brand new 7 meter long Camper, made by professional people by ~55.000€ (about 65-70.000$). And the Fiat Ducato can also fit a 6ft bed across the backside. Best wishes! 😊

I’ve been obsessed with this channel since I first found it two weeks ago. My dream is now to travel around Europe or something in a Van.

I definitely like the upgraded van because of all the extra functions and additions but I m not sure the extra price is worth it.

To each his own. We bought the revel sprinter went from an 87 VW Westfalia to the Revel and sold my 87 westy for 42k, very happy so far and doing some great modifications and upgrades as we speak. Pick it up tomorrow.
Our revel was brand new 2020 120 k. Oh I am 6’3” I fit fine any taller person no. Did you have a kettle that was compatible with induction? We use a little 2200 watt generator and an easy start on the AC and boom AC in the boonies

Hahah you guys are so good! You guys are honest, realistic, funny but not stupid to explain things ...like others... I like the way this videos are made. Thanks! This makes me feel good about my decision for my Van. I have a friend who just got the fancy sprinter builded by a good company and I’ll go with her everywhere and it does helps me to see what they decided to put in their van to decide what I want in mine which is a ford transit and I’m building it myself 😅
So, very interesting everything you guys shows here. Thank you! You guys are cute and smart! 👍
