Got a 21 year old F650 BMW with a ROTAX engine. It's done 92000kms ;does not use oil between change [3500] still on the original clutch , cam chain .and tensioner , Why does not BMW still use Rotax..Also got a 01 RSV 1000 with a ROTAX and it's brilliant. BMW I think are making a mistake going for a Chinese engine just to save a few dollars.
@@maxflight777 I'm correct. Aprilia was making the BMW F650 (the twin of Aprilia Pegaso which had slightly better tuned Rotax) at least till 2001, and OPs bike is from 1999 or older. Even though later on BMW started making f650 themselves, they still used whole lot of Italian Pegaso parts in it, and throughout the later lifecycle both bikes were very much joint effort. Do catch up.
@@maxflight777 LOL. I said F650s (from his bike's period) were made by Aprilia (BECAUSE THAT IS THE CONTEXT OP introduced). To which you responded "TOTALLY INCORRECT" - which means they were never made by Aprilia - and then you progress to vaguely point to irrelevant nonsense about some Chinese bike, ending that with condescending "do keep up". Being wrong and condescending is a particularly poor combination. So I give you a detailed explanation how f650 was actually manufactured by Aprilia. In response, because you are unable to accept you were wrong, you create an alternative story that you think validates you somehow and removes you being wrong... And I am the odd one? Apart from being unwilling to change your position in light of new information, you seem to have some personality issues. EOT.
Does this bike deserve to be compared to the likes of the Street triple, MT09 and KTM790? I feel a good comparison would be the GSX S750 and Aprillia Shiver. I say this due to the price, performance and weight. The others listed above a more full on and hooligan bikes in my mind and all about middle weight naked high performance. I love the look of the bike and considering selling my own GSX S750 for one. My main concern is can I have fun on it? I have had a Street triple 675R (2013 model) and wonder if I would get a similar amount of performance and fun?. Great review as always.
Andrew Spooner It does and is a high quality bike unlike MT09. The KTM and MTO9 will outperform it but, is a more versatile bike than both. It can tour or e a semi hooligan bike.
@@dgomes265 why would tis bike be more versatile? Any reason behind that comment? Also don't sell your gsxs 750 for this, the engine on your bike is a million times better
@@dgomes265 well the mt09 can do this too. You will pay for the Esa as much as you would pay for a good suspension for the yamaha. Ktm is more performance focused, i agree. But looks like you are a bit biased.
Looking at one of these as my GSXS 750 isn’t really pillion friendly for the missus. Read the the mcn review which opted for the xr over the r but you have given a balanced view so thanks
No, I’m too old for these kind of bikes. I no longer want an attack bike; that doesn’t mean I don’t like a bike that has a bit of power. Around 100-120 bhp is very nice and more than enough in the real world. I need weather protection in my country (NL) and I need an more or less upright seating position so the xr or similar bikes are preferred by me; in other words an allroad or a not to extreme sports tourer. The tank capacity is too small for a bit of touring and commuting.
@@palantir135 Have to agree with you. I don't want an all singing/dancing 1200rt, so I have had to settle for a V-Strom 650 though it will never see an off road trail as long as I own it. My ideal bike would be a middle size engine, say 70hp, nice comfortable saddle with upright riding position, a fairing and luggage - a BMW r80rt!
steve taylor I’ve had the vstrom, brilliant do it all bike. I wanted a bit more power so I have a Honda cbf1000f sports tourer now. Also a very nice bike but I’m going to put some risers in the handle bar for a more upright position.
Max Flight i agree but do you really need that amount of power in the real world. And those bikes drink a lot more fuel and then you need a bigger tank.
Great vid. But one thing that wasn’t mentioned was excitement. Pretty sure you won’t be able to ride a z900 or mt09 without mentioning excitement which has got to be a key ingredient for a naked
Sorry, not sure if I posted this earlier. Try closing the throttle when you change between driving modes and the bike will change automatically. It saves pulling the clutch at all!
Hi TMF, really nice review of bike I've been patiently awaiting an upgrade to from BM. I think you made a mistake on the seat height. You would have flatfooted a 770mm I believe. Anyway maybe you can cleanup another spec that BM continues to miss-report: front end geometry. They have reversed the trail dimension on roadsters vs R900XR and also previously on R1200-1250Rs. vs RSs. I have never seen anyone call them on this but as you reported, the roadsters have sharper steering and this can't be possible with a longer trail than the more upright models. Maybe I'm mixed-up?....
Thanks for a distraction from Storm Ciara. Triumph just had the press on new Tiger 900s in Morocco. How long till there’s a TMF test of those to compare to the BMW 900s? Soon I hope!
...I actually got invited tot that launch which was very nice of Triumph...I'm hopeful for a ride ASAP but I have no current plans...but really looking forward to it as I am a huge fan of the outgoing Tiger 800 which I rode extensively last year.
Very interesting bike. Not sure if it has enough of everything over the competition to put it at the front of the que but it"s definitely worth a look & owning a BMW supposedly has it's perks.
@@njminer Manufacturers MPG figures are always optimistic but being a parallel twin it should still be pretty good & something in it's favour over triples & fours.
Really helpful review, thanks. I picked up on your comment about an excellent next step for a new rider coming up from a smaller bike (CB500F in my case). I'd pretty much decided on a 2016+ Street Triple until I saw this last weekend. I'm about to test both the 2016 F800R and the new F900R. The new bike will be 40% or so more expensive than the older model but I'm thinking I might avoid another upgrade in a couple of years if I go for the new bike. My riding is weekend twisties and track based rider training. No commuting. Would appreciate your thoughts?
I enjoy your reviews! However - the audio on this one was noticeably worse than your previous programs. Did you change something? Change it back! :) Thanks!
I have a new mic to stop the buzzing that others complained about on the previous one and for this vid I moved it closer to my mouth as I thought the audio on the XR review two days previous was a little low....still more work to do.
A lot off fluffy distortion on your voice TMF, that mic setup needs adjusting. Still a cracking vid and the usual informative and enjoyable review though!

I've done a test ride on both the xr and r. Coincidentally I also did the ride on the r model on friday. I agree with the points you mentioned on both bikes. I'd like to add the xr I rode was the gold silver one with a normal windscreen and at speeds of 120/130 km/h I stil noticed wind buffeting.
Great video-This machine or the F750GS -I can't decide -as I'm a returning rider -I would like a bike that is going to keep me interested and is comfortable.
I somewhat miss the old F 800 S but this new engine is so much better. It’s interesting how many people have said they prefer the R over the XR. I rode the XR and there was a lot to like, but it won’t be replacing my Tiger 800, not yet. I need to ride the R.
I've been looking at different bikes for a few weeks now and this is one I wasn't expecting to be considering. A local dealer for me, here in the US, has a demo with 200 miles on it for $8700, with 42 month warranty. Was considering the Kawasaki Z900rs, but thinking this might work better for my needs (commuting to work, fun rides and occasional 2-up riding with the wife). What are your thoughts on this Andy? Thanks in advance!
@@TheMissendenFlyer the dealer ended up selling the BMW before we could get there and the Z900rs insurance rate was ridiculous. I guess it's a sophisticated "bit of kit" as you would call it.. But you really prefer this over the MT-09 ??? I mean, the MT-09 would rip this BMW in half when it comes to power. And surely the fun factor of the Yamaha is much greater? So whats so much better with this BMW then? I'm really curious, cause to me this bike just look like a traditional commuter kind of bike, that gets you from A to B. Am I missing something here? Anyways, thanks again for a great review! It's quite tricky for me to ride Kawasaki's (ironically Kawa UK is just up the road from me - literally about 5 miles away but don't seem to want to speak to me)....there are some friendly dealers around though so I will get to it...
About time you get around to reviewing a Kawasaki Z900. Very curious to hear what you think in comparison to this BMW and the other bikes you have reviewed in the same class.
Yes it's quite hard for me to review Kawasaki's as there are no really local friendly dealers, ironically Kawasaki UK HQ is very close to where I live in Bourne End (I rode through there in this video!) but for some reason they don't seem keen to lend me bikes....no idea why as I can't see anything but upside for them, free advertising straight to their target market, why wouldn't they be beating my door down??? Anyway, don't get me started or I'll go off on one.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Lol... I know what you mean. Where did you get the Z900RS from when you reviewed it a couple years back? I know a few people at a Kawasaki dealer in the Aylesbury area if you would like me to ask them on your behalf?
You need to get yourself a test ride on the Z900! Far better than the MT09 in my opinion. I've test ridden the 2017 Z900 twice. Once for a town ride and once for a country road ride Decided not to have a 3rd as I would have bought it! Get yourself over to Onyerbike and have a ride on their demo. No difference in the 2020 version other than a TFT screen, two riding modes (that it didn't need) and the seat is slightly higher.
Gonna buy my first non-A2 bike this spring. Considering the GSX-S750 and the F900R. The GSX-S seems a little dated in some regards, but i can buy a used one quite cheap. Thoughts?
I've not ridden the GSXS750 (I don't think!) so can't really comment...you won't go wrong with either, go for the one you like the looks of most I'd say...
I am with you on the F900R definitely prefer it to the XR. Bought the F800GT last year and now wondering if BMW will bring out an F900GT not that I'm unhappy with the one I've got of course lol.
Yes new microphone as I was getting complaints of buzzing on the old one - I've bought a deadcat (fluffy thing) for this one that is due to be delivered today, I'm hoping that will help...
Lol mate 5'8", try being 5'3 like me, it's a hoot. Anyway, liking that tft screen, see what you think of the z900 one, that's a nice screen as well. Cheers, nice vid.
Don't know how I know this but, in Cookham, right behind you when you did your walkaround is where you can do a speed awareness course, should the need arise.
Err I think I've ridden them all! If they bring out anything I like the look of then I'm sure I'll be having a go on one...KTM are one of the nicest bike companies (let me correct that THE nicest bike company to do business with - at least from a RUclips Vloggers point of view)...
TMF. This was a very interesting video. Like you , if i was changing my current machine i would give this bike some consideration. For the shorter person it looks the goods.
The blue is very nice though I think Id prefer the model with the fairing and taller screen. Topbox and heated grips would make it a good urban, weekend tourer. Twins seem to be the default engine for this genre in terms of price point.
Interesting that both this one and the 900XR appear to have a signicant part of the lower bodywork missing from the models shown at the shows and on BMW's press stuff. The bikes look completely different without it. Reviews awesome as ever 👍😊
I would post pics and links but guessing copyright might be a minefield. I'm amazed BMW have removed the lower fairing from some markets as without it the bike just looks like some crappy KTM copy 😉
Nice "Woofity" exhaust note. (Technica term) Funny how 9 gorillas is considered a cheap bike these days. And 13 litres? Really? But nice. Would that engine in the gs tempt many off the 1200 I wonder? Happy travels
Yes shame that - I don’t really understand why we don’t see more belt drive bikes - I get the mechanical efficiency argument but lack of maintenance for me would be a greater advantage.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer It can only be cost. The belt requires a number of covers to prevent small stones getting between the belt and the sprockets which trashes the belt very quickly. The efficiency is about the same for a belt or a chain.
Oh right, I always understood chains to be more efficient but I stand corrected! You would think the cost of a chain would be considerably more than a belt given all the parts, but I bet you're right, these things usually come down to cost don't they. Good to hear from you as ever Graham...
going off piste a bit ,wot touring boots would you recommend for someone whos trying to get back on a bike ,maybe you could put it on your channel .TIA
I see no mention of heated grips on BMW Canada's F900R page as either standard equipment or optional extra, I suspect they might be standard equipment though.
Cb650r or the f900r? It’s only a thousand more for the bmw , loving the look and sound of the Honda though.... I’m a beginner btw and just going to get my license next month
TheMissendenFlyer what would be a bike to begin with for you? Just wanted to have a bike I can grow with and get more comfortable over time. Thought the Honda was beginner friendly Thanks for the reply
Well something with a little less power - personally I think 100hp+ is too much for a first big bike and you want to make it to your second! That said many people do go straight to the big bikes and say they are fine with it (mind you I've not heard from those that weren't!!)....all the best!
TheMissendenFlyer thanks! Appreciate it! Well the Honda is 95 and not as a 4 cylinder i thought it’s not going to be so aggressive and accessible to handle! I’ll make up My mind again , thank you :)

Thanks for that TMF, it's been a while since I left a comment. I've got my name down to test ride that bike in a few weeks time. I always enjoy ur vlogs😊
Good to hear from yo again Allen!
First class review as always Andy. Well done sir. Love both the XR and this naked version.
Couldn’t agree more on that blue colour, fantastic in the sunshine.
Those TFT screens are brilliant and I like the Matt effect on it, so you can see it in direct sunshine ☀️
Keep up the good @TMF. I will be watching. 👍👍
Cheers Gary!
Yay, a bonus vid! Thanks TMF.
Cheers James - I'm glad you spotted that! Normal service resumes tomorrow....
Nice looking bike and after another great review, I am very much looking forward to taking one out for a ride.
Four year old review and I'm glad you have a better microphone now. 😁
F650s were manufactured by Aprilia.
Giwrgos Zygomitros Luggage, Pillion, ESA. The other 2 bikes are performance focused. I am on an 2017 R1200r. Now after owning a F800r.
@@dgomes265 maybe you are a bit biased? BMW fan? :D
@@dgomes265 well the mt09 can do this too. You will pay for the Esa as much as you would pay for a good suspension for the yamaha.
Ktm is more performance focused, i agree.
But looks like you are a bit biased.
Good review thank you. If I was in the market I might be more inclined towards the R1200R and have the shaft drive.
The only minor issue I have with the R1200R is that its headlight is not LED. 2021 year model, maybe?
Great review, nice bike.
Great looking bike.Well made, nice looking fast, comfortable and well priced!
Looking at one of these as my GSXS 750 isn’t really pillion friendly for the missus. Read the the mcn review which opted for the xr over the r but you have given a balanced view so thanks
My pleasure….
Would you swop your Street Triple for one? Didn't think so, but I do quite like the look of it. Suspect your microphone may need a slight adjustment.
I wouldn't swap my Street Triple for anything, not even a Street Triple!! ...and thanks for the advice...
The tank capacity is too small for a bit of touring and commuting.
d zora maybe but then I’d buy the xr because that one already has a big screen and an upright seating position.
Max Flight I know but this one has a much smaller tank.
Nice review Andy. Wonder if you would do a vid on whether PCP, HP or leasing is best option....
I'm a "save up the money then buy it" type of person - I hate paying interest of any type, so it would be a short video!
Good alround bike. Ta for review. Best, Pete.
Here in the USA BMW basically has only 2 or 3 main option packages lumped together
Great vid. But one thing that wasn’t mentioned was excitement. Pretty sure you won’t be able to ride a z900 or mt09 without mentioning excitement which has got to be a key ingredient for a naked
This would certainly be in contention as a second bike in Bibs garage...
This vs 2020 Street Triple RS? Does the low end grunt make up for the extra weight compared to the RS?
I've not ridden the 2020 but I bet I would take one over this any day - I love the Streetie and the triple engine sounds glorious...
@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks for the reply, I figured as much
Sorry, not sure if I posted this earlier. Try closing the throttle when you change between driving modes and the bike will change automatically. It saves pulling the clutch at all!
Brilliant as usual 👍
Thank you so much 😀
Hi TMF, really nice review of bike I've been patiently awaiting an upgrade to from BM.
Wow, jogging through the new BMWs with barely a breath taken O_O What is it with BMW and the small fuel tanks?
Great review - thanks but I was wondering what the servicing costs are like. Being a BMW I have heard they can be costly compared with, say, Honda.
In my experience they are no more expensive to run than any other bike.....
Great ride 'with you' today. Great bike, I guess a Yeeehaaa says it all! It ticks almost all my boxes. If only it were shaft drive.
Especially the gas tank. BMW's website claims 56 MPG but that is more like something I'd expect to see on a 650-700 cc twin.
Go for the Street Triple!
@@TheMissendenFlyer leading with the heart (and probably ears as well! the triple does sound great..) thanks for the prompt response.
TMF don't talk bad about motorcycle because he is too polite!
A lot off fluffy distortion on your voice TMF, that mic setup needs adjusting. Still a cracking vid and the usual informative and enjoyable review though!
Deadcat came today.more work to do....
@@TheMissendenFlyer awesome sauce. You've got some of the most professional videos on YT in my opinion mate, along with LCR and a few select others. Keep up the good work! 👍
You prefer the blue or red color?
Good review Tmf good price for bmw like the looks .thanks from Danny
hi ,great review as always, liked the bike.surprised you prefered naked one over the adventure, i,d love you to review z9oo to see what yoy think as i own one..i hate nit picking but the vid quality seamed below your usual ,maybe you tube cocking it up? no offence.
Strange....might not yet be fully rendered on YT as it's only just been published?
I've done a test ride on both the xr and r. Coincidentally I also did the ride on the r model on friday. I agree with the points you mentioned on both bikes. I'd like to add the xr I rode was the gold silver one with a normal windscreen and at speeds of 120/130 km/h I stil noticed wind buffeting.
Glad we concur!
Yes I love the Kwak but given your requirements this may well suit you better as you say....
@@TheMissendenFlyer the dealer ended up selling the BMW before we could get there and the Z900rs insurance rate was ridiculous. Ended up stumbling on a freshly traded 2017 Tiger 800 XRT at the BMW dealership. 8900 miles on it and spotless...lots of extras like hard luggage, Givi windscreen, bash plate, heated rider and passenger seat, etc. Thanks for your reviews and advice it helped when looking!
Cheers :)
Who'd a thought a 900 was a learner's bike ;-) Nice bike and review, cheers TMF
...well only when restricted to 48hp of course....
Cor! A nice sunny British day...iv forgotten what there like! It’s storm central in Devon this weekend ☹️
Great review as always 👍 Just wondering when are you road testing the new Kawasaki Z900? You mentioned you've heard great things about it.
It’s difficult for me to get hold of Kawasaki’s to ride, even though Kawasaki UK is literally only 5 miles away from me! ....don’t think they see any value in talking to me...and believe me I have tried!!!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Have you tried On Yer Bike in Westcot near Aylesbury, they are a Kawasaki dealer and will allow you to test there bikes. When you was in Haddenham the on the other video, which was also great! You was only about a 10 minutes or so ride away. I'm 40 and having passed my test last week, only had a DT125 when I was 15/16. Now looking to go and get a street triple or the z900. Although I've had aggravation, trying to get a test on a triple, due to there Insurance policy requirements of me needing my license for a year. Think there missing a trick on being able to sell new bikes to new bikers🤔.
Hi Another great video as always .....would it be possible to comparison video with this BMW up against Kawasaki Z 900 please thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not ridden the standard z900 so tricky!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Hi I would really appreciate it if you could test ride the Z900 as I can not find anyone on the net who has done a comparison between the BMW and Z900 as I really like both bikes and want to buy the best one and really hoped you could put your stamp on this comparison...I do realise that you cannot do it at the moment but hopefully after this virus has gone please regards Graham........
That's very kind but no need if we're talking on yer bike....
Any plans on testing out the Honda cb650r?
Squirmy It’s literally between the CB650R and F900R for me
No plans at the moment Squirmy...sorry!
how do you feel it compares against the 931 monster, not withstanding the price of the Ducati.
I’ve not ridden one I dont think so can’t really compare….
Thanks for posting. How would you compare the seat against the xr?
As I mentioned in the video - not so hard....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Apologies. Must of missed it.
No need to apologise - watching and or listening isn't compulsory!
Keep up the good work!
@@TheMissendenFlyer You should review it at some point. From what I've heard it's a decent bike with an amazing sound
@@TheMissendenFlyer you have a ride on one on your channel lol
Did you change your helmet mic setup or something for this video? A lot of sputtering/wind noise.
Yes - new mic. More work required....
I am with you on the F900R definitely prefer it to the XR. Bought the F800GT last year and now wondering if BMW will bring out an F900GT not that I'm unhappy with the one I've got of course lol.
Different microphone today? A bit of sibilance ? Anyway, looks nice but begging for a tail tidy. Think I prefer the XR, but I do like that blue.
Yes new microphone as I was getting complaints of buzzing on the old one - I've bought a deadcat (fluffy thing) for this one that is due to be delivered today, I'm hoping that will help...
TheMissendenFlyer That might tickle your lip!
Now this is a BMW i could get into.. love it..
Lol mate 5'8", try being 5'3 like me, it's a hoot. Anyway, liking that tft screen, see what you think of the z900 one, that's a nice screen as well. Cheers, nice vid.
Another good first look video TMF. I think I prefer the XR model.
Have you ridden either?
@@TheMissendenFlyer
No TMF. I will have to visit my local BMW and maybe have a test ride on them.
...will be interesting to hear which you prefer! Surprised myself that I preferred the "R"
Don't know how I know this but, in Cookham, right behind you when you did your walkaround is where you can do a speed awareness course, should the need arise.
I have completed such a course
Brilliant!
Doing one of those courses is punishment enough, lol 😴
No mention of ktm anymore in any of your reviews I noticed, and ktm doesn't seem to be lending you any of their bikes. Any reason why?
Err I think I've ridden them all! If they bring out anything I like the look of then I'm sure I'll be having a go on one...KTM are one of the nicest bike companies (let me correct that THE nicest bike company to do business with - at least from a RUclips Vloggers point of view)...
This one must have one of those basic screens that dont blur the speedo over 70mph ;o)
Two questions, sir:
What kind of heated gloves do you use?
Would it bother you if your GS engine was made in China?
Keis and no....
TMF. This was a very interesting video. Like you , if i was changing my current machine i would give
this bike some consideration. For the shorter person it looks the goods.
The blue is very nice though I think Id prefer the model with the fairing and taller screen. Topbox and heated grips would make it a good urban, weekend tourer. Twins seem to be the default engine for this genre in terms of price point.
Would u reccomend this over an mt09 or a gsx s750?
Quite nice looking they’ve held back on the geodesic barnacles for once... be a good allrounder I would think..
Interesting that both this one and the 900XR appear to have a signicant part of the lower bodywork missing from the models shown at the shows and on BMW's press stuff. The bikes look completely different without it. Reviews awesome as ever 👍😊
Really? I shall have to look that up....
I would post pics and links but guessing copyright might be a minefield. I'm amazed BMW have removed the lower fairing from some markets as without it the bike just looks like some crappy KTM copy 😉
Shame they don't do the 900XR in this blue. What a lovely colour.
Nice "Woofity" exhaust note. (Technica term)
Funny how 9 gorillas is considered a cheap bike these days. And 13 litres? Really?
But nice.
Would that engine in the gs tempt many off the 1200 I wonder?
Happy travels
New channel sponsor TMF?? Nice review but I preferred the XR.....mic problems?
Well spotted!
I owned an F800S about 11 years ago and it was a cracking bike. I notice they have abandoned the belt drive...
TMF how does this compare with the F750GS -I'm torn between the two?
Much lighter, more agile, smoother. A completely different ride...
Would love to see that blue on the XR?Thks.
Yes that would be a nice combo agreed...
going off piste a bit ,wot touring boots would you recommend for someone whos trying to get back on a bike ,maybe you could put it on your channel .TIA
If there is ANY similarity between this bikes engine and the Nuda 900, its a win!!!
No, the Nuda used the old Rotax in a GS frame
Would you recommend the F900R for a 6'4 (193cm) tall guy like myself with the taller seat? Cheers!
I like it, looks a bit like my mt09sp ....without the stupid number plate holder
Good luck with the test! Make one of these your second bike not the first is my advice....
TheMissendenFlyer what would be a bike to begin with for you?
Just wanted to have a bike I can grow with and get more comfortable over time. Thought the Honda was beginner friendly
Thanks for the reply
Well something with a little less power - personally I think 100hp+ is too much for a first big bike and you want to make it to your second! That said many people do go straight to the big bikes and say they are fine with it (mind you I've not heard from those that weren't!!)....all the best!
TheMissendenFlyer thanks! Appreciate it!
Well the Honda is 95 and not as a 4 cylinder i thought it’s not going to be so aggressive and accessible to handle!
I’ll make up My mind again , thank you :)
Don't understand why BMW limit the launch colours across the same range, guaranteed ill buy the XR then they will bring out a blue and M series white ... grrrr
