I’m in the market and pretty impressed with these new models. I love the new boxers but these twins sound great and these appear a bit more nimble. The XR looks quite capable of comfortable business commutes around SoCal with the small fairing and the hard cases. I split and filter a lot so value a lean profile! Gotta ride one soon! ✊🏼🏁

That inline three cylinder sound and the looks of both mt09 naked and tracer are just way more attractive!
I'm with you on the MT-09, but compared to the Tracer, I prefer the XR. That's why bikes are great though - we all like different styles! John
I got f800r and after Mt 900. I know parallel twin can't be compared to triple, but man triple is so smooth and powerful. F900 looks modern and aggressive with tall seats option

I'm still leaning towards the Tracer 900. It just seems to have more of the sport in "sport tourer" category. The XR I think, they class as adventure. I'm sure it is very good for touring, but whenever I hear the sound of the Yamaha triple opening up on the RUclips vids, it just sounds a hell of a lot more exciting than the purr of the XR twin that you can ride in 3rd gear all the time. However, I do think the XR is a great looking bike.

I looked at the BMW. Then bought the Tracer 900 GT for many reasons. The main reason is that the BMW engine is made in China. I know the quality is good but I do not appreciate BMW farming out to China. I totally love my yamaha.
also the Yamaha looks like it has a more comfortable seat for the passenger

Took an f900xr out last week and really enjoyed it, only downside is a firm seat, otherwise all good. Much prefer it to the Tracer 9gt.

I went a Ducati dealership saw a 900 r but would let me test drive. But knowing that the seats are firm I can always order a better seat from the official website

That's a really great review/comparison. I've got the Yam triple engine in my XSR/LC900 and for sheer excitement to ride that engine will take some beating. I ve ridden the Tracer as I thought it would make a better tourer than the MT10 I use. You've definitely peaked my interest in the BMWs and being 6ft 3 I'm guessing the XR would be a good fit. Cheers

What a Great balanced review, I was always torn between gt tracer and the 850gs.
The 900 which is why I watched it could be a contender for my next bike.
The only thing reviews miss is how much are services, last small bmw one was 150quid,200 with a brake fluid change, will swop before the big one I think

Nice review. You mentioned buffeting on the XR, but It seems that was with the sporty (short), smoked windscreen the red XR comes with. Have your ridden the XR with the longer, clear windscreen?
Sadly we only had the chance to ride with those screen (They're not the shortest ones).
I am leaning towards the tracer 900 and 26k before valve check. I am not overly worried about overloading the Tracer with too much gear. Also the Tracers side bags do not fit a full helmet so i would add a top box that fits 2 helmets 600 USD and done. I am pretty sure I could make the 900xr better than the Tracer but for a lot more money .

Interesting review. The Tracer and the XR are both seem more stable and better handling than their naked siblings, maybe it's the longer swing arm? I have been riding the Tracer for a year and love it to bits. It needs two things to improve it: A screen that doesn't create backwash like a Chinook; higher ground clearance. It is so low, even the smallest ridge will catch the bottom of the bike. Sleeping policeman are a nightmare.
Sadly the standard XR screen isn't great either!
Great review, and the BMW will be n excellent bike. However, last year I bought a 3 year old Tracer 900, £6k. Unbeatable value.

They're such different bikes, you'd really have to try them to see how you preferred the more characterful 90° V-Twin (or L-twin) of the Ducati. Plus it'd come down to cost and what your pillion thought! John
If I was looking for something very similar to the MT09 but a little different it would be from Triumph. Sportier would be the Street Triple 765. More easy riding, Speed Twin 1200. Lucky for me, I’m happy with the FZ09.
What an awesome in detail review. I’ve ridden the s1000xr and when these came out recently I rode the F900R. Great engine but have to agree the R isn’t quite one to go for XR 900 better and wind protection everything for me. I wonder whether going for the 1000xr is better move I mean it’s quite a scary bike😿😃🙀
Main thing with the S1000XR is that it's a bit bigger and slightly more unwieldy - it is a cliche but it only goes as fast as you make it! Cheers, John

A real review at last cheers, have a S1000xr traded for an R1 am starting to get disappointed with the quality of parts on the BMW compared to the Yam and that has really surprised me with this. Example new water pump, cam chain issues (sorted with aftermarket adjuster), bloody handle bar vibration/mirrors even with updated handle bar bushes, heated grips minimal heat. Even if I were to look at the 900XR the non quality of parts would keep me away from BMW and go back to Yam. Everyone has there own opinion of course!
Thanks Jay! Absolutely - the varied pinions is what makes bikes great in my eyes. I've got a 2019 S1000XR - the bar vibration was slightly annoying but Evotech-Performance handlebar protectors sorted that (the weighted bar ends are great, but these are even heavier). Hopefully I won't have any of the other issues you've been unlucky enough to suffer! I've certainly found the heated grips to be good. John
@@bennettsbikesocial I did see the review/video you did on the Denali lights for the S1000XR and I must say thanks, got the same Denali, Hex easycan and what a doodle to put on, I did however use the Chinese brackets so there further up and away from the indicators...cheers again
Thanks for the excellent review for those 2 new ones. Very tempting for XR specially. Hope we have similar price range in South Korea (In fact, I never feel a value for money for BMW motorcycles in Korea as they are selling them in ridiculously higher prices)...
What about KTMs, the Duke 790 is the most exciting and aggressive in the segment and would give both BMW and Yamaha a run for their money. Btw we get KTMs really cheap in India because of local manufacturing. What about SK?
@@shenanigans4177 I know that the Duke 790 is a great bike. KTM Korea is having a strong pricing for this particular model in the market too. I am just wondering whether KTM is making 790 GT (smaller version of 1290 GT) since we have a baby beast.

@@kmg8302 They didn't announce the GT yet but the 790 Adventure is a strong contender. But considering how good the roads are in SK, you probably won't need all the capabilities of the Adventure, unless you are into actual off-roading stuff. But it's a very good handler nonetheless.
Very good and timely data. I was just at a Progressive Motorcycle show and sat on an XR and Tracer GT. Many factors to consider and right now I'm 51% Tracer.

Paul, what did you get? I'm 51% Tracer GT 49% Yam XR. Here in the states the BMW apples to apples is about 2k or more higher than the Tracer GT. I love the tech on the XR and the fit and finish overall. But the $$ is an issue and I keep just watching reviews and not buying anything lol.

F900R is a joy to ride, it handles really well on wet roads.
So if you were starting over would you buy the 900 XR or the 1000 XR and why. I am in the market now.
Is there any forward lean sitting on the F900XR or is it upright like the GS1250?
I've got a DL1000XT, which I have never ridden off-road,. So I think the XR will be the ideal replacement.

Thanks! Up close the swingarm and pillion hangers are a bit ropey, but that's for a later project; I'm enjoying riding it too much at the moment.

That's not me - it's a BMW rider that we put in from the press pack just so we could show some dry weather riding. You could argue he doesn't need to shift his weight, though doing so will have reduced the amount he needs to lean. Likely it's just for a more dynamic look for the footage. In my riding, I was going for the 'don't fall off, don't fall off, don't fall off it's wet and slippery' stance. John
@@bennettsbikesocial 😅 Ha! That's the stance I tend to favour as well, especially on someone else's bike. As for the BMW rider...it's the shifting of the hips into the corner and the leaning of the rest of his body towards the OUTSIDE that's a head-scratcher for me. Anyway, keep up the good work!
Compared with Yamaha Tracer 900 GT, which one is better for average users with few years riding experience? Appreciate if you can do a group test (F900XR, Tracer 900 GT and Tiger 900 Pro GT) or give your opinion on that. You could give me a big help for I am seriously to get one of these middleweight sport touring bikes. Please note I don’t do off road riding. Thanks!
Honestly, it totally depends on which engine you prefer. Personally, I'd buy an S1000XR (I did), but these are both great in their own ways. Both very capable, but very different feeling engines
I am thinking seriously about the 900xr - prob get a test when I mot the s1000r.
I have a ‘19 s1000r also & I’m looking at these 900xr , I don’t know why I must be getting old & looking at more weather protection but they do look like a good all round bike , every one seems to be buying gs nowadays ,
I would have thought the 790 duke would have been in the comparison and also the adventure 790 .They have all the toys also and the duke is a great riding experience .I agree the mt o9 suspension is poor but the motor is sweet .

I really like the styling of the XR, but I would rather have a naked, and in a world where we have the Duke 790 and more importantly the Street Triple RS, I don't see why would I want a F900R.

@@chrishart8548 I have seen both bikes, and the Duke 790 looks better, no idea about how it handles. The power and torque difference is pretty small, but check this, the 890R is going to be cheaper than the base F900R.
@@chrishart8548 I have not test-ridden the F900r and it is not stellar for my 6'4" with 34/35" inseam. The space between pegs and tank cutouts is tight and only really sufficient when not operating levers.

Can you answer me this, would the F 900 R be comfortable for a passenger? Seems the F 900 R and the F 900 XR are so similar?? I`m looking to upgrade to a bike my wife can sit on the back of for more then a few hours, but still fun when I`m by myself. I currently own a 2016 Yamaha FZ6R and she can only take about 2 - 2/12 hours max
Sadly we didn't get the opportunity to take pillions during the launch. Best bet would be to get a test ride with your wife and see what she thinks. Sorry I can't help more! My wife loves being on the S1000XR, but she still insists on a top-box. Cheers, John

I just dropped into my friendly BMW dealer to look at a trade of my 2017 XR for a 2020 XR. Unfortunately living in Ireland we only have 2 dealers south of the border and both look like they are killing the value in the old XR's being traded-in now. I have been offered as low as €9,000 for my mint bike yet they are selling similar XR's online for €15k. I'm starting to look at leaving the brand, but the F900XR is an interesting package.

That's because the dealers have to resell the bike for a profit. Cut the middleman and sell it directly for the actual market price
I think the only way things work out is a PCP and hand it back and take the new model. In most cases the monthly payment can remain the same and you get a brand new bike
I’m the same here in Ireland , I have a 2019 Bmw s1000r sport in as new condition & the dealers are offering as little as € 11,000 for it € 11,500 at best even tho they are selling 2017 ones for € 12,000 , my bike last year with the few extras cost € 18,000 so don’t think I really want to lose 7k on it to go to 2021 & give a load of cash on top as well but as u said the 900xr looks an Interesting package I must enquire what the pricing is like for them here

Bit like a poor mans multistrada no 19" front wheel cheaper suspension. I would trust a BMW over a ducatti. You can also spec spoked wheels on the multi 950 now

Good review. I would compare bmw f900r to yamaha xsr900 though. Both are very good looking. MT 09 on the other hand has a big problem. The headlight. It's so ugly and not fitting the bike design. It looks like an afterthought. BMW f900r's headlight design is smooth and flowing with the body. It's low and aggressive and remind me of Ducati xdiavel, but much more elegant and fitting.
I wanna buy both.

Carrying capacity is largely ignored in most reviewing in the motorcycle press/blog world. And it shouldn't be. I wonder how many people tour , blissfully unaware they are over the weight limit? I wonder what insurance companies stance on this is? Maybe I don't want to go there, but so many bikes are touted as long distance touring bikes for two, when really perhaps they are not.
Should be a big consideration in bike choices I think.

Absolutely - I always make a point of looking at the load capacity in any review of a bike that might be used for touring. It's less relevant on the R than the XR here, but still, a lot of people tour two-up on far less typical machines. John
It would be better if manufacturers specified subframe vs spring max load since the latter can be swapped for a better unit. The tracer is known for being under sprung for two up regardless.
@@ImJensenKing Load capacity will influence more though - there's stability at speed, tyre spec etc. It comes down to the homologation, so it wouldn't be something easily changed.

Thanks for the detailed review! I am trying to get an idea of the engine performance (have not tried either bikes yet). In the review on BikeSocial you guys mention: "the little XR’s engine doesn’t have the same emotive growl or throttle response of Yamaha’s triple"[1] . At the same time it appears if you look at the engine curve, F900XR [2] is (for the same RPM) above the Tracer 900 GT [3] by a healthy margin for most of the RPM range.
Can you help me understand how can the XR feel more sluggish (though you did not say that that is how I interpreted it, unless you were only referring to the sound and throttle response speed), while outputting the same or more HP (until the 8500rpm+ range)? Do riding modes (e.g. Rain / Road / Dynamic / Dynamic PRO) change this at all?

it's more about the initial pick-up of the motor; the Yamaha feels like it's more immediate. John

I like the overall concept of the bikes but the sound man, its such a dull sound. Even with after markets. And the Yamaha just roars like a beast with after market.
I went and heard one of these in person and I ended up loving the sound of the new 270° twin in the BMW. It sounds a lot more thumpy than the one. As usual, it's next to impossible to judge them by the way they sound in the video. In person, there's a lot more of that big-twin thump. Obviously it's a completely different sound than the I3 in the MT-09, but which one you prefer will now come down to personal preference, whereas the only people who liked the sound of the old 180° BMW twin were the people who rode them.
Nice looking, but those Chinese bikes are heavy. TFT is beautiful, however.

I think BMW missed a important point on this bike it’s only got a 15.5 litre tank which should have been around 18 litres
It does seem a bit small. Realistically, you should be able to expect a good 180 miles out of a tank, and kerb weight would have been a consideration in the design. Compared to what I get from my far less efficient S1000XR, it's a good range. John
Bought the F900xr over the new Tracer. Tried both. The Tracer remains a better engine, but overall, the feel of the XR is better and the overall finish is just nicer. It is smaller, more of a daily proposition than the Tracer. You get the tracer if you want the engine above the rest. The get the xr for the overall package, handling and, you know, it just looks better. I realize there will be disagreements here... :-) Everybody stay safe and have fun.

Yamaha everyday: though motorrad does makes some nice bikes that I'd love to tool around on. Not a fan of the whole key fob thing on motorcycles. In the long run, its going to be a pain to replace and reprogram.
Keyless ignition is an option on here, so you could go without it if you spec'd it the right way from the base model. Would probably work out more expensive that way though. It wouldn't surprise me to see keyless on the Yamahas soon too. Oh, and remember that all of them will have coded keys anyway. John

@@charlie-tangomotors2516 Pretty much every bike over 125cc now has an immobiliser system that uses a receiver ring around the ignition barrel. There's no battery in the key, but the key and immobiliser are paired. Often the multiple ECUs are all coded to it too! The biggest risk with keyless ignition has been with relay theft, though that's not really an issue with bikes - it's more of a problem for luxury car manufacturers. I would take the Yamaha MT-09.
I've got a XSR900 Out the door for $9000. The sound of the triple is amazing...only a V4 can beat it. I can ride in 3rd gear in the canyons from 35mph all the way up to 100mph. And I am adding a fully adjustable Ohlins suspension front and rear for $2100 set up for my personal weight and riding style. I have 90 degrees angle on my knees and on my torso, so the riding position is one of the most comfortable out there. Now put on the top Japanese reliability, now BEAT THAT BMW!! And I forgot.....the bike is 410 lbs wet after the exhaust replacement and fender eliminator. Not bad huh???
I went with the 670cc NC700X DCT from Honda $7000 out the door. It’s slow but still fun
Yes but it's not exactly good looking is it. Not to my eyes anyway - it looks like an old 350LC gone wrong with petrol tank perched way up high.
@@markanstey2654 Actually it has it's character for some people. Definitely the design is not as refined as the R9T, bit I love it. It is not for everybody you are right. My friends don't like it as well. This is one of those bike you either love it, or you either hate it. The feeling of riding it though.....and accomplished with that low budget. It's a pretty damn good machine and it gives you more than you pay for. Also lots of room for customization as well.

No..only same concept
No the nuda was a rotax engine 315° crank and based on the f800r engine. This is a stroked version of the f850gs engine

@@Delb9891 Yeah, legs felt really cramped together. I have not ridden it, so my initial response is entirely based upon the moment I had with it.
I don't know. This platform seems well-received by many but I can't see it. I just think that even though these bikes seem to have that nice BMW build, it just looks kinda cheesy or budgety to me, sans the cockpit. That is part of the BMW build. And I don't like parallel twins. Especially this one. The R - I'd take a Z900 over this any day. The XR - This one is a little less Meh, but it's still Meh. You can't find one around here for under 15 grand, and for that money I would rather buy a Tiger 900. In my case, I'll never see the dirt so I'd go for a Ninja 1000 SX or a Supersport S. Same money, but I think these are better bikes. I know a lot of people mention the MT-09/Tracer, but that bike would not be on my list. Of course, it's all very subjective and this is just one guy's opinion. I'm sure these will do just fine.
How do you find the wind protection on the 900 XR? Is is much worse than on the GS or the big XR? Thank you

I just priced them out 2 wks ago, apples to apples...the BMW is $2k higher.
He was trying to be diplomatic about the F900Rs fueling by using the word 'choppiness'. I can tell you now it isn't just 'choppy', it is snatchy to the point of being dangerous. No matter which mode you choose it is the same. When you're leaned over in a turn on a trailing or closed throttle you want to be able to apply the power and have it come in 0,1,2,3,4,5, 6,7% etc in proportion to how much you twist the throttle. This goes 0%........nothing......nothing .... then bang, 8%! Not only that, it's not even consistent, it could be 6%, or 7% or 5%. BMW is not alone in this appalling on/off throttle fueling but what is galling is that BMW is perfectly capable of providing beautifully fueled bikes as many of their models demonstrate. And don't try and defend it by saying it's all to do with having to meet stringent emission controls. It isn't, it's just careless and sloppy mapping by the particular factory team responsible for signing it off.
Your comparison of engine performance seems biased. Are you saying it is better somehow that the BMW has less power and a lower redline? I think the Yamaha motor is a much better powerplant in every respect.
Not at all - the point I'm trying to make is that while peak power is down on the BMW compared to the Yamaha, it makes its peak earlier in the rev range, which is typically more usable (it makes more torque, and that's earlier too). But as I said, I think the MT-09 has the more exciting motor. John
@@bennettsbikesocial I can tell you first hand that every bit of the CP3 power is usable and it sure doesn't feel like "more work" to get to it. It is a fantastic motor that has plenty of low end, but is also very strong all the way to the rev limiter (11,500 I think).

I have over 30,000 miles on my 2015 FJ-09 and I have to say my impressions are quite a bit different than yours. The suspension on my FJ-09 is perfectly adequate, I know it is upgraded from what was on the 2014-2016 FZ-09, so I can't speak to those models, but they also have better suspension from 2017 on. I don't take it to the track but I can't imagine pushing past the limits of the suspension on the road.
I love the throttle response, it is very responsive but completely controllable. Which modes did you try?
I like the styling much better than most bikes I see. Certainly has most KTMs beat.
I'm not a fan of the FZ-09/MT09 dash, but the FJ-09 dash is very nicely laid out and very configurable. The dash on the Tracer GT is a beauty if that's what you are into, but I'd probably prefer my FJ-09 dash for the flexibility of it.

Prediction: As the sun slowly melts ICE motorcycles, the feature that will distinguish one from the other is their character. What I’d like to know more about is the how successful the manufacturers are in achieving the character they intentionally build into their bikes. That said, as opposed to reviewing cigars, wine or fine single malts, the vocabulary to talk about a bike’s “character” is oddly absent. Next step? Similar to reviewing cigars, wine or fine single malts, find some way to reach consensus about the methodology and vocabulary we use to talk about a bike’s character.
Yamaha can sleep peacefully.... this is no match for the MT09 or Tracer GT. It will only sell to the BMW fan boy or some one who always wanted a BMW, and doesnt care about anything else. I have said this before, it is unforgivable that BMW did not fit ajustable front suspension at this price point. And it seems to me that everyone is trying (very hard) to find a reason to forgive them.....
And for you to say that you would prefer this over the TracerGT, is really really strange.... someone who rides 2up and needs at least preload (front and rear) cannot say this (in my opinion). How will you set sag?
Sorry for the long comment, but having a well ajusted supension is everying for me, safety, handling, braking etc. Even the Versys 650 has preload and rebound on the front... If the target was the Tracer 900 GT, they misssed... I am not even considering the Tiger 900 just because of the 19inch front wheell.

My thoughts exactly. Tracer 900's only problem was its crappy suspension, and that has been solved with the GT model. If you look at it objectively, there are so many issues with the XR; Chinese made engine (yeah, no, save the "but it's still BMW quality!" bs for fanboys. China still has a very long way to go before people can really trust them with their products. Also, if I'm buying a BMW, I want a proper German-made engine; no excuses), non-adjustable forks, no proper seat for the passenger, tiny tank on a "sports tourer" (facepalm) and of course the price. It's almost like the BMW is trying to see how much they can make people pay with the minimum amount of value 😂 The price for the base model is already outrageous, but with the options, it quickly goes up in the Kawasaki Ninja 1000SX, Tracer 900 GT, and even Ducati Multistrada 950 and SuperSport territory. And this overpriced new bike has nothing on those tested and true bikes. BMW has once again priced itself out of the competition (remember the F800GT? Lol, what a joke was that?). With all the better alternatives around, this bike will only please the fanboys...

I only ride 2 pistons, so MT09 is no choice. Also the electronics on the BMW is awesome.

@d zora Answer is to buy what suits you, test ride if you can once licensed. BMW ain't all that neither is Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda or Kawasaki all have faults, all have fan clubs.

Hi Gress, have you had a test ride on S1000XR? Because I can tell you that it’s NOT a pipe and slippers bike. I have a Suzuki GSXR for road riding and the odd track day but the XR blew me away and if you don’t believe me watch the Cuban Rider on his. I couldn’t justify the £15,000 price tag plus I’m a short arse, otherwise there would be one in my garage.
Just to think that these beautiful sound machines aren’t going to be allowed by 2035😒
