I agree, the S1000XR makes absolutely no sense at all.
I mean, who needs 165 horses, especially in a “touring” bike?
Or an engine that is constantly reminding you of its presence (and that it quite fancies ripping your arms off).
And it is a bit rowdy (some would say angry).
Yes, the S1000XR is completely and utterly daft.
Which is why I’ve got one and why I love it so much.

Thanks for the review TMF confirming I have done the right thing ordering my TE version! Incidentally it's possible to bring that model to well over £15k if you throw enough accessories and extras at it. If you are of a sensitive disposition look away now as here are examples of a few of the accessory prices:
Colour matched panniers (without liners): £711
Colour matched top case (without liner): £460
    Tinted tall windscreen: £206
    Engine bars (front): £356
    Aux lights: £529
Rear rack (reqd. for top box): £213
A couple of commentators have mentioned the poor back brake (not really a huge issue but I blame Bybre) and my only other minor gripe is that it would have been nice to have the tank at say 17 litres as BMW are clearly after a slice of the adventure market.
Worth mentioning also that the lowest 775mm option requires a factory lowered frame and you have to forfeit the electronic suspension as well as the centre stand.
As well as the pre-load adjuster you pointed out there is a screw adjustment for damping I seem to remember.
I was idly wondering whether the Chinese-made engine might cause supply difficulties to Berlin (Corona virus etc) where the bike is assembled.

I’ve had the S1000RR & currently have the S1000R. But even that’s a tad insane for touring. Hence I’ll pass on the S1000XR, but this 900XR hits the spot! Here in Australia we’ll only get the fully loaded version. I can live with that👍🏻😎 This’ll arrive in April here so I’ll definitely take one for a test ride. I’m still not discounting the Yamaha Tenere or the Husqvarna Norden 901! Yep these 2 are obviously more off road focussed but if I like the 900XR, I’ll take it! Good review Andy & hopefully in the UK your weather picks up for riding. Here now we are almost through the worst of summer & can’t wait for autumn!!!👍🏻😎

I enjoy your content ,the first time impressions, the long-term reviews on a lot of the newer bikes and even your reading of the news. I think it would be super cool for you to ride some of the standout bikes of the early 2000s and the 90s to compare them to the current crop. I think you might be surprised at just how capable they are compared to the newer iron . They keep adding technology and complexity yet if you look at the zero to 60 and the quarter mile times they haven't gained much at all. Obviously there's a lot more to bikes than that it would just be cool to see.

My reasoning is that they are available new for £9500 and come equipped with heated grips and a centre stand. Add these to the BMW and it seems a larger screen then you are talking about £11k+. Seems like quite a quiet bike when not being revved, which is a big, big YES for me. I spent the cost of this bike on a Yamaha Tmax 530 DX 18 months ago, and have put only 600 miles on it since then as it's so very noisy. Parallel twin? V-Twin?
New seat, higher screen, knuckle guards, grip-heaters, wife on the back (maybe)... Good to go man!

Hiya TMF, Another great review, bike looks really good to me, but i bet that rear tyre soaks you on wet roads! seat ends over the rear spindle!.
Two questions for your Sir! 1. You have a bike with only a side stand, why do you always park with the bike in neutral? I only use neutral at traffic lights on the flat. Otherwise its in gear so I can use the clutch to control the speed moving in and out of the garage etc.
    2. explore the facts for us = do you need to 'scrub' modern tyres in? No release compound from the moulds nowadays so why not just ride?
    Looking forward to your reply!

    Rog

I’ve had one of these (after all) for the past 8 months. It was the best all rounder and practical bike I could get. I have the sporty red TE. The electronic suspension and quick shifter work well. The dynamic mode is like having a different bike if you want it. The three piece luggage is fine for tours. My Mrs is happy as a passenger/pillion. The main things I did change are to a MRA Vario windshield (took me 10 mins to fit) and a Wunderlich Queen seat for more distance comfort. I sometimes miss the retro bikes, such as Bonnevilles, or fancy the RnineT; but as a practical tourer this is fine. Also I prefer twin engines so this is a good option for me.

How did you get on with the wunderlich queen seat? I’m 99% sure I’m going to buy this bike soon but have heard a lot of people complaining about the factory fitted seat, saying it’s too firm. Is the wunderlich queen seat comfy?

    • @petewebb6952
      @petewebb6952 2 года назад +1

@@stephenashley9311 the stock seat is ok to get used to the bike. I splashed out on the Wunderlich Queen Seat for its pillion qualities. It’s not a soft cushioned seat, but it’s ergonomically better due to its construction and width. It’s very well constructed. As it is slightly wider i can feel it’s higher i.e. on the stock seat it is more comfortable to touch t( ground, but when moving with feet on pegs the Wunderlich seat is more comfortable. That means it is more comfortable on a longer journey. I’m told I can expect it to become even more comfortable over time. My wife hasn’t had much chance to try the pillion, but initially she can feel it is more comfortable and feels secure. I can recommend it, but as it’s not cheap i advise to get the bike first and get used to the stock seat before paying out. You can get one from Nippy Normans if you are in the UK. Good luck. It’s a good bike, especially if you like twins.

@@petewebb6952 thank you Pete. Very helpful. I will see how I get on with the stock seat first then. All being well on the test I’ll be buying a F900XR 😁👍🏼

As always, a great review; thorough, entertaining and informative - I've been interested in this bike since it was first announced and hoping you would get to review it. Thank you so much!
It strikes me as one of the best all rounders that BMW have released in some time. Not too expensive, not too heavy, not too tall, commuting, touring, sports riding, adventure riding, - it appears to do it all with the caveat of not having the much vaunted "off road" capability.
True, it doesn't have the tele lever front end of a GS/GSA or RT, which enables ESA on both front and back, and chain rather than shaft drive - but it costs a lot less, weighs a lot less, and given the difference in weight v's power is probably not that far behind a GS/GSA/RT in outright performance.
Tellingly though, it has all the latest electronic safety aids such as ABS Pro for example, which could be a lifesaver if in a critical situation you should panic brake whilst leaned over, thus saving a low or high side accident and crash.
I do think the GS/GSA/RT are likely the better bikes overall than this new F900XR - but at significant extra cost.
However for what it costs, and what it offers, and if you have no desire to go off road other than on short distances of unmade road, it looks to be an exceptionally well rounded package and great value for money.
My local dealer whom I spoke to yesterday tells me these will hit the Australian market in April and arrive in a "fully loaded" specification at circa A$22,000.
Compare that to a fully optioned GS which comes in circa A$35,000, or a fully optioned RT which hits A$42,000 looking at the AU BMW configuration tool online, and the value both financial and in it's all rounder capabilities will likely ensure this will be a very popular machine.
Certainly I'll be taking a very interested look at one when they arrive.
Thanks again for the great review :-)

This was a brand new bike so seats will always be on the hardside. Over the years ive found that your body also adapts to the seat so its not always a case of wondering whether the seat needs upgrading, you need to bed in with the bike over a few hundred miles, more in some cases. I recall when i first starting riding my FZ8 and wasnt convinced by the seat but after around 500 mile my backside and hips began to become more familiar with the position the seat was putting them in. Currently looking into these sit up bikes that can do all, its a large sector when you consider the bikes available, from V stroms to even the ninja 650 and Yamaha tracers. An all day do anything sit up bike seems to be the way many are going now and the choices are fantastic.

Fantastic review, nice to hear someone else say the 1000 feels angry, fun as it is I thought it only made sense when I was going at speeds which draw attention.
I bought the ex demo 900 from my local dealer and have done 3 things to improve the comfort, MRA Vario screen, re-padded seat and an unplanned one, a Non-GT spec rear Road 5 tyre because of a puncture... I have no clue why they chose to fit the reinforced GT tyres to a light bike like this but it made a difference for the better.
On the twisty back lanes the 900xr is very evenly matched with a friends V-strom 1000, it's more fun for me than my MK1 SuperDuke GT was, so for me it's perfect.
