I think you should also take a bit of inspiration from the Techno Pro Spirit MR-S that appeared a few times on Hot Version in Japan. That little monster with just a basic 2ZZ swap, small tires, and stock brakes absolutely PUNISHED the competition on the Gunsai touge and really went to work at Tsukuba as well. Made Tsuchiya's personal super-tuned hachiroku look like a bucket of bolts. Along with Jordan Cox's Civic at Bathurst, the Spirit MR-S is probably the greatest David v Goliath car of the last decade. And, I'm sure the guy who built it knows a thing or two about making those cars turn.
@mitchellsteindler They use the same 3 drivers for every car on that show. When you're laying enormous, embarrassing gaps on Nob Taniguchi and Keiichi Tsuchiya Himself, it's not just the driver. The car is in the top-5 fastest sector times on the Gunsai touge, faster than any tuned GT-R, BMW, or Porsche GT3 that's been tested. It just has nutty cornering speed and superb balance.
@mitchellsteindler Well first of all, it's definitely not "otherwise stock". It's a widebody car with custom suspenson and aero. But, on the Gunsai touge first sector, yes it set a better time than a 991 GT3. That's a ridiculously tight, narrow, bumpy course that represents a typical Japanese mountain pass (touge). It's almost as tight as an autocross, but with even fewer straight sections. On the Nürburgring, it would obviously get obliterated.
Demonstrating the difference between an LSD and one without was very educational. Maybe that is the reason why many old muscle cars end up crashing in car meets.
I bought my own Mr-s after seeing you buy one and having seen the review TDIB did. these cars are just incredible and hopefully soon ill start getting mine ready for some real fun.
Although is not mentioned during the track test, I think raising the rear might have made quite a bit of a difference in correcting the rear end weirdness and it was not just the diff. These cars use MacPherson strut in the rear, right? Is very easy to get to horrible roll center and kinematics when lowering a MacPherson.
Good points. There are certainly examples of cars with MacPherson struts that actually fare worse with lowered ride height because the geometry is thrown out of whack and not even roll center adjusters will correct it to a sufficient degree. The GD-chassis Honda Fit/Jazz is one of them as per Australia's Honed Motorsport - they have a great tech breakdown of this on their Facebook page.
@@TypeVertigo I can add to that list Fiesta ST Mk6. There's a clip on here with someone actually measuring the toe curves. You really don't want to lower it :)
All the "I told you so" aside we're glad it's starting to come together, even if turning your car into like everybody else's wasn't the plan. Process is being made! Also I see where you were trying to come from. It's the Spoon Logic of less is more aero wise. And balance and power is where it's tuned from and maybe you'll get there one day on that chassis but this is the easiest way until you can get there!
From where I'm standing, it was the adding of ballast and where it was located (pretty much passenger footwell area) that cemented the adding of rear aero being the solution. It wasn't as apparent at the beginning that the added weight was, as Coby says, lifting the rear tires more than the fronts. The "I told you so's" are right, but arriving to this solution with better understanding is part of why it's more fulfilling and engaging to watch. Kind of a "House MD" approach, if you will.
happy to see progress! the MRS with i think one year of development is getting real close to the Civic that has +3 years of development and is basically finished as a project car. It has potencial!
Awesome video all around. Marc making new connections with transmission experts. Ben thrilled to find some time and feel payoff from the MR2 platform. A great splitter build segment. Smiles all around, and it’ll just keep getting better
Ben, i am happy for you to make progress. You are usually more upbeat, but ever since the MR2 has become your Track Tool, your whole (public?) demeanor has had a solid shadow cast over it. Anticipating that this year as proven tough and challenging i wish you success.
I noticed Cody while driving before a turn he will tap the brake quickly with his left foot. My question is , Is cody quickly left foot braking into the turn while staying on throttle or is that a quick pump of the brakes to assure that theres brake pressure before the turn(like a quick safety check of the brakes if you will) or is it to transfer weight to the front before the turn?
Great video, as always. These updates are shaping up to be one of my favorite series on youtube overall, and seeing the process of fitting an LSD was really great to see since I've been considering the same for my car once it hits the track more often. Definitely looks worth it, but also like a complete pain in the ass. Keep up the great work!
Love the videos and glad to see your making progress. Definitely think you would benefit from endplates on that front splitter as everyone knows how these make rear wings more efficient the same is true with front splitters too. Trapping any air mass flowing across the edge of splitter before it spills off the end raises its pressure, thus provide downforce
I am so hyped up to see this run at Laguna. One of my favorite builds I’ve ever seen because I’ve always been so curious about the MR-S. Seeing you tease out all the unique characteristics of this car is amazing! Keep it up!
Awesome!! Wish my spyder had an lsd, I do occasionally spin the rear a little at low speeds but that’s mostly because of the turbo spinning up which does add a little rear weight even though my exhaust out the turbo is about 2 feet long vs the spiral snake with the massive muffler that it used to have so I wouldn’t say its a lot heavier. I should also mention i run 17x9 wheels and eventually way to change the rear to 17x10. Also i was one of the ones who said big wing, less power, less weight go check it.
I love that he felt the need to explicitly clarify the obvious about that comment on the GT4 because he just *knows* he'd get all the smart asses starting a royal rumble about it in the comments otherwise
For the splitter material, wood can work, yet the weight will be a problem there, unless it is light enough with good sturdiness, I hope just that splitter will make the car even faster, and it further push to buy a car (not an MR2) and build it to be a track car. Yet it'll be hard to drive on track in Quebec because everything is closing because of the people moving close to the tracks and complain about the noise.
i think someone in the last episode of the mr2 mentioned that it is the fuel delivery being the problem, its not stable enough with it being an open loop system and to solve that issues is to make it a closed loop and have a set constant rate of fuel being supplied to the engine. i would personally look down that road to see if there is anything that you can do to make more power.
from a grid racer to a grid racer... im so happy to watch your episodes and progressing to a more stable race car. it s pain watching you go to a race and you cannot perform at your best because of a bad racecar setup. now im anticipating your nxt race. "full throttle all the way"
Love it man...I've said it all along. These cars NEED an LSD and a little Aero to be stable. So happy you're finding improvement with the car. Do not give up on it. I will say....a 2ZZ-GE & C60 would have given you a lot less headaches. You'd keep it in Lift on the track anyways.
Quick tip: instead of putting the sealant on the front of the airdam you should put it at the back of the airdam. It makes it look way cleaner and serves the same purpose. Glad you made the mr2 faster🔥
OH SHIT! my comment made it to the video! nice work on the car. That LSD made a difference it seems. Seriously no hate on other bens civic. love his car. but i really wanna see this mr2 compete and give him the run for his money i know you're capable of! And yes, I'm happy. those lap times you're registering are making me giddy for the future of that car!
As a huge scion fan and the leader of Colorados longest lasting scion club I can tell you right now that you don't what that tc2 6 speed. It has a fundamental manufacturing flaw in the case that causes the bearing for 6th gear to be crooked on the shaft and I personally know 4 people that have had them seize and completely destroy the trans.
Great Video Finally, you are truly enjoying the car... it's always a hit and miss gam, but it's what makes it ymthat much more enjoyable when you do get it right..
Told you watch that Japanese video of the Toyota MR-2 smokin all the cars but only lost because the clutch was pushed to the limit! I forgot what the channel is called. The driver really showed them what it could do even though it was down on power from all the other car.
I do get that RUclips needs a novel approach, but the whole point of the MR2 spyder is that it is lightweight. If you stray too far from that formula, it kinda loses its USP. If you’re looking for a heavy more powerful race car, there’s better platforms to start from. Ultimately the route Ben’s been forced down is the best option for this vehicle.
Hey Ben! Awesome video and glad to see the mr2 is headed in the right direction! Now I am not an expert just seeing things that I may not understand, but with the height of the air dam in the front, the area behind it right at the lower grill, would the air dam create a low pressure zone behind it with that being that tall? Like I said I am no expert but seems like that harsh edge may cause that at least a little
I'm glad to see Ben smiling again. It'd been a while since he seemed happy with his life choices.

from a grid racer to a grid racer... im so happy to watch your episodes and progressing to a more stable race car. it s pain watching you go to a race and you cannot perform at your best because of a bad racecar setup. now im anticipating your nxt race.
I'm happy for you guys! I was getting frustrated about the MR2 and really wanted to see it perform. I hope you guys find that power issue too!
Another great video! Happy that your getting the car set up to be faster and more important you being more confident behind the wheel.
Quick tip: instead of putting the sealant on the front of the airdam you should put it at the back of the airdam. It makes it look way cleaner and serves the same purpose. Glad you made the mr2 faster🔥
Crongrats Ben! Very inspiring perseverance with this tricky build.
So glad to hve watched this series from day one! So stoked to see how far the car has come!
this video made me soooooo happy for ben L. !!! I couldn't stop smilling throughout the vid .
Glad to see Ben is happy with the improvements to the MR-S, can't wait to see how well both cars do at Leguna
These are the best auto content on youtube since UNDERDOGS the subaru brothers. Keep it up!
I love watching the content you guys out out. It’s like watching the armature version of drive to survive for GLTC.
OH SHIT! my comment made it to the video! nice work on the car. That LSD made a difference it seems. Seriously no hate on other bens civic. love his car. but i really wanna see this mr2 compete and give him the run for his money i know you're capable of! And yes, I'm happy. those lap times you're registering are making me giddy for the future of that car!
I would love an ASMR video of John and Marc just talking shop lol
I love these videos. I’m pretty new to time attack and making good progress as a driver… these videos motivate the hell out of me!
Great Video
Finally, you are truly enjoying the car... it's always a hit and miss gam, but it's what makes it ymthat much more enjoyable when you do get it right..
Yesssss, happy you are finally figuring it out. Congrats man!!!
Very happy for you its been really exciting seen the progression!!
18:34 nice caulk
the videos that G&G are uploading are therapy for me, it truly relaxes me.
This is the episode I've been waiting for! It's always satisfying seeing the work on known issues. I'm excited to see your progress from here!
Told you watch that Japanese video of the Toyota MR-2 smokin all the cars but only lost because the clutch was pushed to the limit! I forgot what the channel is called. The driver really showed them what it could do even though it was down on power from all the other car.
no video for MR-S for a while is this car still alive..
I'm so happy its going in the right direction now! just gotta get that strange engine problem figured out!
I know the problem:
You need a carbon fibre roof 😂😂😂😂
I like this home-made splitter. That is some good old fashioned prototyping!
Frankenstein Motorworks is actually a killer name, can't believe no one had thought of it!
What about motorstein frankenworks?
this is my first time seeing a gears and gasoline video, and this was satisfying AF!
You should be proud of what you have accomplished with it! Predictability is a huuuge step forward for the driving feel
Im so invested in this series. Im also not indifferent to the difference a different diff makes!
Thrilled you’re finding your rhythm! It’s crazy what kind of car was hidden behind that Open diff!
That mr2 looks so good
Hey Ben! Awesome video and glad to see the mr2 is headed in the right direction! Now I am not an expert just seeing things that I may not understand, but with the height of the air dam in the front, the area behind it right at the lower grill, would the air dam create a low pressure zone behind it with that being that tall? Like I said I am no expert but seems like that harsh edge may cause that at least a little
Jon at TRE is awesome, hard to get ahold of sometimes, but so knowledgeable!
Gotta love the struggle of tuning: being different vs doing what's proven to work.
Imagine no ballast and 300+ HP This thing was be a rocket!
It definitely wants to be!
