The man spanning his arms across that shell crater @3:19 is Army Captain Brernard E. Hagen, he was my grandfather. He was injured a few days later while trying to defuse an unexploded Japanese shell, probably by the same submarine, and was awarded the Purple Heart. CPT Hagen went on to serve throughout the south Pacific, ending up in Korea at the end of the war. During the 1950s, Leiutenant Colonel Hagen served in Germany as part of the US Military Liaison Miision in Berlin spying on the Soviets. He retired from the Army as a full Colonel in the late 1960s. He passed away in 1992.

I sorta got tired of Nazis and found this channel. Can't get better submarine information than here. Still like Mark, but tired of Nazis.

In 1946, a Long Lance torpedo washed up near the Golden Gate Bridge. It's thought that just after Pearl Harbor, a Japanese Sub tried to hit GG Bridge with it, but the swirling currents in the GG caused it to miss. See Mark Felton's video

Thanks for sharing this story. I was never taught in school that California was attacked. I always enjoy hearing these little known stories of our heroes.

I really shouldn't say this, but when I see a Japanese sailor or soldier I always think of Toshiro Takashi (Brian Tochi) from Revenge of the Nerds. "What the fu#* is a robster craw?" Sorry, one of my favorite movies.

Have you ever heard of the urban legend that there is a WWII Japanese submarine off the coast of Palos Verdes California peninsula in 300 ft of water sunk by depth charges ?
It was supposed to have launched a mini sub which was captured trying to enter the Long Beach Naval base for target of opportunity .

Very informative video. I knew about the shelling, but not about the ultimate fate of the sub and its crew. Good work as usual.

WWII Japanese do not hoist up to surrender flag and they were killed and sent to the bottom of the ocean. Good for our men. The internment camps. There is a very strong movement within them to have loyalty to Japan over the United States. Source of that information where's my child's social studies science History electronic book 📚 a number years ago in school. His actually written by a Japanese person that was interned the story was.

Why these are the same Japanese that were ordered to joyfully rate as many Chinese women as they could on the mainland. The idea was to decimate the bloodline. Where was the honor when a Japanese snuck up and bombed our man and kill them at Pearl harbor ? What was left out was that they were shooting from the boats and the dinghies. Rather not their light armament should reach the plains is not even considered.
