Like you, I am a DIYer. Always get good ideas watching your vids. Ordered a saddle last week. This was a great orientation. Much thanks
Ok, I've watched a ton of RUclips channels on various subjects. Over the last few weeks I've watched several of your videos on saddle hunting. I can honestly say you are my kind of hunter. Best channel for all around hunting info. Keep it up!
This is the first saddle hunting video that actually explained everything thoroughly so thank you
Agreed.
By far one of the best informational videos on saddle setups.
Thanks! Considering the Sit Drag. I do alot of still hunting & like the idea of a super light weight saddle to set up for the eve post.
WOW, without a doubt the coolest informational video ive eve seen. This video is going to revelutionize my hunting. I go deep in on public land in Pa. long hikes on big mountains. Tree stands are not real feasable in most of my adventures. This video just blew my mind. THANK YOU.
LOVE IT! Send pics once you get all setup!
Great video! This is the exact type of video I needed. To go alone with this one a video on how you pack all your gear to head into the woods and a setup video including your climbing method and installing your platform would also be super helpful. Keep up the great work c
Alekart those are all in the works! Thanks for the comment.
Cannot believe you were rocking this level of knowledge 5 years ago.
Unbelievably helpful video.
Thanks, your fan from Hinesville.
Thank you for telling about the actual load ability for this product.
I ordered the sit drag today. I have a Trophy Line Tree Saddle but like the lightweight of the Sit Drag. Your added features are excellent. You could sell modified versions I bet. Thanks for taking the time to show this. Looking forward to more, especially on platforms.
sameold77 awesome! Hope you like it. I love mine so much.
Very detailed and informative!! Great Video!!
Great video. I am planning on making a similar system for hunting next year. Big help and great ideas. I have to recommend you tie some stop knots! Lol
I loved the amsteel pack hanger idea! Thanks for the great video.
+Spencer Valeri it doesn't get any lighter, or more simple! I love it too.
I am very interested in trying some of this type of hunting this year, I have been watching your channel and your buddies channel, DYI Sportsman, I love to make gear. It is actually funny, I was telling my wife just this week, when I was a kid, My dad and I used to make our own stands,, we made a lot of our other gear as well. This is a interesting way to hunt and I think it would definitely be way worth the effort to try sometime this season especially in those way off the beaten path places I like to hunt. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video, I look forward to seeing more from your channel and I will post up if and when I get some stuff made as far as a way to hunt like this. Thanks again and have a blessed week my friend.
Dale
Saddle hunting is my favorite. Give it a whirl.
Thanks! This video is exactly what I needed.
Pretty solid system recs...nice video.
following your progress excellent info and vids
Thanks Michael. Hopefully it helps!
I was resistant to saddle hunting, until watching this. You may have created a believer.
What a Great video ! The rangefinder on the adjustable line is genius !
+Silent Approach Mobile Hunting I thought so too! I love it.
Very resourceful. Awesome video!
Great setup I always wondered why if gear is good enough to climb a Mt why is it not good for tree hunting?
Great video saddle pre made saddles big $$$$ but you know that. Keep making videos for the working class you are good at what you do
My husband and I just your video and we love it. He has been working on going to a saddle setup so this video was very informative. We are wondering how long is your bridge on the sit drag? Again great video your information is very helpful when it comes to getting a saddle setup for the first time.
+Amber Price my bridge is right at 30". Most experienced saddle hunters prefer bridges in the 24"-32". Hopefully he finds what he needs. Go to saddlehunter.com for more info!
Great stuff, love it!!!
+Bishop Archery glad you liked it.
Great video! How does this setup compare to a traditional "off the shelf" tree saddle (other than price) like ease of use, comfort, mobility in the tree, etc? Which would you recommend for a beginner?
Say could you send me a list of your items and where I can buy them such as the blue Amstel line and the mechanical line tightener etc., thanks
I’m trying to absorb all this info because I would really like to get into this style of hunting. Subscribed here and I can read Saddlehunter for hours. Couple of things: Is your tether line dynamic or static and what millimeter is the size? And just to be perfectly clear...your trusting your wellbeing in the proficiency of your splicing....correct? LOL!
Awesome. I would love to see a video of how you do this with a rock harness on as well.
I agree, barely mentioned, not shown in the video or a suggestion in the links.
great video. was wondering if you were worried about slipping out of the saddle as there are no leg loops. Thanks.
Great explanation
Great video!!
Thanks Mike!
I’m considering beginning to saddle hunt or get a Lone wolf sit and climb
Leaning towards this method
Does the rope gather scent?
Say you go to a random set of woods and find a good tree . How long does it take you to setup and get up the tree 22-25 foot?
Video is great!
Amazing video thank you so much!!!!
I think you need another S biner. just one. or maybe five.....LOL. I really like your accessory hanging techniques. I need to adopt some of that for public land hunts where I can't screw into the tree.
+flinginairos maybe 1 more? Ha!
nice organized set up
+bill fresh Thx! It works for me.
Good video
🇧🇷👍 parabéns Congratulations 🇧🇷👍 gratifying 🇧🇷👍
Before amsteel there was kevlar cord. I use amsteel to pull tree roots with a 1/2 ton chain hoist.
A little late to the party , great video.
What rock harness do you recommend
I feel like i may be missing something though. I know you didn't use your harness since you were close to the ground, but the harness is what confuses me a little. You mentioned a rock harness, but can you still utilize a typical treestand harness? and regardless of which harness you use, I assume you would then attach a 2nd tether, and how do you keep from getting caught up in all of that?
Bro, I get into tree stand, having a really heavy backpack that does not include a single item mentioned here. Imagine I add those to my gear and I have to walk about a mile in order to get to where I want. I’ll have to get my hand on a mule to carry it that far for me lol. Having said that, this video is awesome 👏 good safety , practical gear . Thanks for the time spent passing the knowledge. Cheers. And my question is where can I get one of those saddles?
It's all about personal preference. What works for you might not work for me. There is no "right" answer.
Not familiar with this right but doesn't seem too friendly with longer ATA bows
Holy shit. I'm a fan. I was going to buy a tree swing but man oh man im going to go this route.
+Dr QXX you won't be disappointed. Good luck and get on Saddlehunter.com to learn more.
G2 Outdoors I looked around I can't find most of these devices. I'm going to have to go with the aero Hunter.
That said I'm going to add those bags and that water bottle holder I think it's a great idea for cord management.
Dr QXX check the links in the video description. I've linked to most of them.
Great info
Is the camo cloth on your tether just used to cover/hide your ropeman 1?
Very informational, thanks for the many great ideas! However, you mention rock harness, but then discuss attaching the lineman's belt to the saddle to climb. Please explain a little further.
Saw it in the description later.
If I get a tetherd saddle do I need a rpck climbing harness as well or just the saddle?
How do you hook up both a saddle and a climbing harness?
Thanks for the content.
Keep up the good work.
BS'D
best saddle video
What rock harness you use. And how you tie it in to the tree?
Have you ever looked at an amsteel whoopie sling for an adjustable bridge?
Jared Goeson I did. I used a whoopie originally but I quit adjusting it once I found my sweet spot. That's when I tied in my fixed bridge. Good point!
We're can you get the new at
I would fall asleep in that thing! It looks so comfortable
Thomas Lenhart yup. It's amazing!
I would like to see how you use your rock harness with this setup
What kind of knot do you have tied in the green tree tether?
I've been researching this method and I'm still totally lost as to what all is needed
Hit up TethrdNation.com there's an FAQ and a saddle hunting 101 section.
Been watching tree saddle videos to see whats involved/ how it works... at 55 I'll have to stick to hang ons stands n such...im convinced this is for the gaget minded...too much shit to carry and sort out at bottom of tree, when i get to the tree I wanna start hunting.
LOL AT 65 I'm thinking I want to learn how to DRT/SRT in a saddle, BUT my go to for a number of years now is a ladder stand or a hang-on with a 20' ladder stick! **WinK**
Great video, could you potentially update these links? Most of them are not available on Amazon anymore.
thanks for catching that. I'll fix it.
Does the mantis come with the amsteel bridge
Whats covering the ropeman 1 on the tether? And what kinda tape is wrapped around the carabiner?
That is camo form tape from amazon. You can see the link in the video description. Covering the ropeman/carabiner is just a little bag I sewed up. Nothing special.
Does your pack ever get in the way? It seems like it would be in the way if you have to shoot around the tree. ???
Pure genius!
+NManitou I don't know about that, but Thx!
What do you use to cover the carabiners and other metal items from clanging?
You can use camo form, stealth strips, hockey tape, duct tape...there are a lot of options.
any good climbing videos?
Any chance I could buy one from you? Wish I had the time to make one myself, but I just don't see it happening any time soon
What's the tether type you previously used on the RCH?
Trying to run and gun this season.
Thanks in advance
I've always used climbing rope. Sterling or Samson are some of my favorite brands. I recommend something in the 8mm-11mm range.
Hey G2 where did you get your retractable from?
The one in the video came from Hobie. But you can find some cheap ones on amazon too.
Very informative. When u say “pair with a rock climbing harness”, how do yo I do that? Thanks.
captbennettgriffin buy a rock climbing harness off amazon, they are around $60 bucks. If he was wearing it in the video it would also be clipped into the tether strap.
000 Martin Thanks Martin appreciate the info.
G2 - At 72, physical limitations have prevented my attempts at SH the two past seasons. I’m back to "open" blind hunting around trees and natural concealment. I do plan to make the best of my sit-drag/RCH because I can maneuver better than using a hunting chair. Anyways, I’m wondering if there is enough of an advantage in investing in another saddle to suspend near ground level in place of the sit-drag/RCH. I think comfort and maneuvering is the pro. The cost difference is the con. I already have the SD & harness, plus ropes and carabiners. Kind of an unorthodox question but I still have too many years left to give it all up. I’ve even found large hardwood deadfalls against live tres. I was able to use the cover to get off the ground 6-8 ft. Anyways, just picking your brain. Thanks.
I'd stick with what you already have. I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze with a more expensive setup.
What do you do with your quiver? Thanks
Neil Speer forgot the quiver! It hangs on one of the gear Hooks, or goes fletching first into the main compartment of my pack. Good question!
I like this a lot, but.
1- why not use the gear strap you use for your range and bow for your pack as well? Seems like you could save a step.
2- where would a rock climbing harness come into play? I know you’re not completely safe with just the sit drag, but I’d like to see where exactly you’d be strapped to the tree with the harness.
When you said that you use Spurs it kinda caught me off guard a little, my dad used to climb a lot for work and he always told me not to use spikes/Spurs unless you plan on cutting the tree down because it can damage the tree, opening gashes for bugs and things to get in. That’s just my thoughts. And also I really like your set up, on average how long does it take you to set up?
This Guys Flies I definitely respect that opinion. Some say they're fine, others say it'll kill the tree. There are a lot of opinions out there about spurs and it can be a hot button for some people.
Depending on my platform, tree, and climbing method, I would say I average 7-10 minutes in setup time. At first it would take me 20-30 minutes. I got a lot faster with practice.
copied your set up. works great. thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What the benefits of building this if you have to wear a rock climbing harness with it?
Hello, which range finder do you used?
Thanks ... :o)
Wild Game Innovations XRT. It's 3 or 4 years old. I Found in on Amazon on sale for around $90 I think.
Which rock harness is your go to??
Hi G2 , I know you have been doing this a long time and we have spoke directly on saddlehunter. You and everyone else have helped me out a lot as I just finished my first saddle season. I own two sitdrags and I noticed where your belt is sewn ..... don't you feel that fabric will rip where it is sewn if you fall ? BTW thanks for the dump bag info I just bought two of them ,they work great !
ALAN PANNELLA I don't think so. The belt only holds the Sitdrag in place. It's not load bearing. All the weight is transferred to the webbing loops and bridge. Does that make sense? Glad this helped!
I guess we can agree to disagree , if you were to flip upside down or slide left or right with enough force that belt would be load bearing. I have the Evo and Kestrel and have performed those positions many times before trusting the saddle and the waist belt is what kept me in the saddle.
My recommendation for everyone is to buy a Kestrel. It is the best commercially available saddle ever made. I don't recommend anyone use a homemade/DIY option.
What type of post do you use for your platform?
It's a 1.25" square tube. I believe it's 6061 aluminum.
Are you not wearing a rock climbing harness? Do you rest your weight solely on the sit drag couldn't imagine feeling safe in that minus a harness.
my thoughts exactly - nothing keeping the climber secured in the saddle. can fall through or out.
He says “pair this with a rch in the first few seconds of the video.
If you look at the tethrd mantis, it does not have a way to secure it other than the belt. The leg straps it has are non weight bearing, so I don't understand the fear of no RCH
You should always wear a rock climbing harness with the sit and drag. It is not designed to be used like this.
3 years late here, but what kind of carabiners are you using to connect your lineman's belt to your saddle loops? Great video btw!
inexpensive climbing rated carabiners from REI. I probably paid $8-$10 each.
You should re tie that figure 8 knot on ur tether and make the tail end a few inches longer and tie the tail end of it in an over hand knot. You only have like an inch or two of tail end and there’s no knot there to stop that from slipping if the knot were to get too loose
what kind of bleat was that?
How much do you think you have in it
Do you need a platform for using the sitdrag?
Yes. You can use a ring of strap on steps like Ameristeps, or the Silent Approach by Bullman Outdoors.
You can also use Stepp Ladders by Wild Edge.
Some guys use screw in steps or bolts.
My favorite is my platform: ruclips.net/video/6CmeoqeoDm8/видео.html
Great video. But I think hunting bigger trees helps to break up my outline more. Small trees I stand out like a sore thumb. Can u walk around the tree w your tether that low?
I agree and disagree. In a perfect world, I would hunt bigger trees because I agree - they break up your outline better. However, big trees are often difficult when hunting mobile. When I have a chance to preset trees, I almost always pick a big tree. Concerning walking around the tree. I try not to do it very often. On preset spots, I'll setup a tree to walk. But when I'm hunting mobile, I'm almost always on my little seat platform which doesn't require walking around the tree.
G2 Outdoors what is your seat platform I'm just getting into saddle hunting and feel like I need a bigger platform to stand on.
Matthew Van Malsen tethrdnation.com/product/predator-platform/
The belt and buckle to hold the saddle up while walking- how did you attach it to the sitdrag? Thanks, great vid! Never been above ground and looking forward to going straight into a saddle!
I sewed it in there. Make sure you test everything at ground level. Have fun!!!
G2 Outdoors thanks Greg! When’s the ESS gonna come out and for how much? Thanks!
Way late on this but where did you get your buckle you sewed in?
What type of knot do you use to attach the bridge to the sit drag? And can you share a link to the belt you sewed into the sit drag?
+Ryan Holy I don't tie any knots on my bridge. I splice Amsteel blue. A splice retains more strength than knots.
Bad choice of words on my part. I was looking for information about the splices. Also, if paired with a rock harness, would you just tie off to the tether? Why not modify a rock harness instead of a sit drag?
what do i do when i get bubble guts? I'd love to try this system but when i got to go do a #2 i got to be quick!
JC Carman I battled colon cancer last year and yet saddle hunted this Fall. My bowels were definitely different, butt (see that pun) it was still the best system for me.
ARMY dump bag; multipurpuse fanny sack, olive drab / brown camo...
Sorry, dump pouch, my bad.
How could you possibly be secure in the sit drag instead of a full saddle?
okballer you would use a rock climbing harness in combination with sitdrag. I run my lineman’s belt through the tether carabiner, so I have two point contact to the tether.
When finished with all that, have time to hunt?
Yup.
if weight is taken of the tether, then it gets loose, and dangerous if not paying attention?
See my comment, above.
I hunt in the southeast mostly pines. Are these good for loose bark pines?
Yup. They'll work fine. I'm in southeast GA where the yellow pine is normal.
@@G2Outdoors Thank you for the feedback.
So you use a rock climbing harness with the sit drag?
Do you use a safety harness or rock climbing harnes ?
Rock climbing harness always.
How do you deal with tree ants and mosquitos ??
Is your cobra buckle metal or plastic?
Mine is plastic. It's a 500lb buckle. I don't consider my belt to be load bearing.
Remember, saddles are designed to PREVENT a fall as opposed to CATCH a fall like a traditional safety harness.
Can you please post a link to the waist buckle you used on your saddle
Chad Goebel it's the plastic 1.5" ITW cobra buckle from milspecmonkey.com
G2 Outdoors Thanks
Quick Question, why you pair a rock harness with the sit drag?
Just for safety. The SD isn't intended to be used above ground.
G2 Outdoors ok understandable.. can you get away with a muddy type harness instead if one has one rather than buying one?
Do you also us some type of climbing harness or just the Sit Drag?
Ihsaan1422 yes. Black Diamond Alpine Bod.
G2 Outdoors Thanks for the quick response! Do you find you can sit for hours in that harness?
Ihsaan1422 yup. Once at hunting height, there should be ZERO PRESSURE on the harness. Everything should be in the Sitdrag. Check DIY Sportsmans video about it.
