    I am very interested in trying some of this type of hunting this year, I have been watching your channel and your buddies channel, DYI Sportsman, I love to make gear. It is actually funny, I was telling my wife just this week, when I was a kid, My dad and I used to make our own stands,, we made a lot of our other gear as well. This is a interesting way to hunt and I think it would definitely be way worth the effort to try sometime this season especially in those way off the beaten path places I like to hunt. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video, I look forward to seeing more from your channel and I will post up if and when I get some stuff made as far as a way to hunt like this. Thanks again and have a blessed week my friend.

  • @WHYtChalk0L8
    @WHYtChalk0L8 4 года назад

    I feel like i may be missing something though. I know you didn't use your harness since you were close to the ground, but the harness is what confuses me a little. You mentioned a rock harness, but can you still utilize a typical treestand harness? and regardless of which harness you use, I assume you would then attach a 2nd tether, and how do you keep from getting caught up in all of that?

  • @chiya2006

    Bro, I get into tree stand, having a really heavy backpack that does not include a single item mentioned here. Imagine I add those to my gear and I have to walk about a mile in order to get to where I want. I’ll have to get my hand on a mule to carry it that far for me lol. Having said that, this video is awesome 👏 good safety , practical gear . Thanks for the time spent passing the knowledge. Cheers. And my question is where can I get one of those saddles?

    G2 - At 72, physical limitations have prevented my attempts at SH the two past seasons. I’m back to "open" blind hunting around trees and natural concealment. I do plan to make the best of my sit-drag/RCH because I can maneuver better than using a hunting chair. Anyways, I’m wondering if there is enough of an advantage in investing in another saddle to suspend near ground level in place of the sit-drag/RCH. I think comfort and maneuvering is the pro. The cost difference is the con. I already have the SD & harness, plus ropes and carabiners. Kind of an unorthodox question but I still have too many years left to give it all up. I’ve even found large hardwood deadfalls against live tres. I was able to use the cover to get off the ground 6-8 ft. Anyways, just picking your brain. Thanks.

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  2 года назад

      I'd stick with what you already have. I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze with a more expensive setup.

  • @Daveyrips
    @Daveyrips 4 года назад

    I like this a lot, but.
    1- why not use the gear strap you use for your range and bow for your pack as well? Seems like you could save a step.
    2- where would a rock climbing harness come into play? I know you’re not completely safe with just the sit drag, but I’d like to see where exactly you’d be strapped to the tree with the harness.

  • @thisguysflies3787
    @thisguysflies3787 6 лет назад +1

    When you said that you use Spurs it kinda caught me off guard a little, my dad used to climb a lot for work and he always told me not to use spikes/Spurs unless you plan on cutting the tree down because it can damage the tree, opening gashes for bugs and things to get in. That’s just my thoughts. And also I really like your set up, on average how long does it take you to set up?

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  6 лет назад +1

      This Guys Flies I definitely respect that opinion. Some say they're fine, others say it'll kill the tree. There are a lot of opinions out there about spurs and it can be a hot button for some people.
      Depending on my platform, tree, and climbing method, I would say I average 7-10 minutes in setup time. At first it would take me 20-30 minutes. I got a lot faster with practice.

    Hi G2 , I know you have been doing this a long time and we have spoke directly on saddlehunter. You and everyone else have helped me out a lot as I just finished my first saddle season. I own two sitdrags and I noticed where your belt is sewn ..... don't you feel that fabric will rip where it is sewn if you fall ? BTW thanks for the dump bag info I just bought two of them ,they work great !

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  6 лет назад

      ALAN PANNELLA I don't think so. The belt only holds the Sitdrag in place. It's not load bearing. All the weight is transferred to the webbing loops and bridge. Does that make sense? Glad this helped!

    • @ALANPANNELLA
      @ALANPANNELLA 6 лет назад +1

      I guess we can agree to disagree , if you were to flip upside down or slide left or right with enough force that belt would be load bearing. I have the Evo and Kestrel and have performed those positions many times before trusting the saddle and the waist belt is what kept me in the saddle.

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  6 лет назад

      My recommendation for everyone is to buy a Kestrel. It is the best commercially available saddle ever made. I don't recommend anyone use a homemade/DIY option.

      If you look at the tethrd mantis, it does not have a way to secure it other than the belt. The leg straps it has are non weight bearing, so I don't understand the fear of no RCH

      You should always wear a rock climbing harness with the sit and drag. It is not designed to be used like this.

    3 years late here, but what kind of carabiners are you using to connect your lineman's belt to your saddle loops? Great video btw!

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  3 года назад +1

      inexpensive climbing rated carabiners from REI. I probably paid $8-$10 each.

    You should re tie that figure 8 knot on ur tether and make the tail end a few inches longer and tie the tail end of it in an over hand knot. You only have like an inch or two of tail end and there’s no knot there to stop that from slipping if the knot were to get too loose

    Do you need a platform for using the sitdrag?

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  6 лет назад

      Yes. You can use a ring of strap on steps like Ameristeps, or the Silent Approach by Bullman Outdoors.
      You can also use Stepp Ladders by Wild Edge.
      Some guys use screw in steps or bolts.
      My favorite is my platform: ruclips.net/video/6CmeoqeoDm8/видео.html

    Great video. But I think hunting bigger trees helps to break up my outline more. Small trees I stand out like a sore thumb. Can u walk around the tree w your tether that low?

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  6 лет назад

      I agree and disagree. In a perfect world, I would hunt bigger trees because I agree - they break up your outline better. However, big trees are often difficult when hunting mobile. When I have a chance to preset trees, I almost always pick a big tree. Concerning walking around the tree. I try not to do it very often. On preset spots, I'll setup a tree to walk. But when I'm hunting mobile, I'm almost always on my little seat platform which doesn't require walking around the tree.

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  6 лет назад

      +Ryan Holy I don't tie any knots on my bridge. I splice Amsteel blue. A splice retains more strength than knots.

    • @ryanholy882
      @ryanholy882 6 лет назад

      Bad choice of words on my part. I was looking for information about the splices. Also, if paired with a rock harness, would you just tie off to the tether? Why not modify a rock harness instead of a sit drag?

    • @bi7235
      @bi7235 4 года назад +1

      okballer you would use a rock climbing harness in combination with sitdrag. I run my lineman’s belt through the tether carabiner, so I have two point contact to the tether.

    Is your cobra buckle metal or plastic?

    • @G2Outdoors
      @G2Outdoors  6 лет назад

      Mine is plastic. It's a 500lb buckle. I don't consider my belt to be load bearing.
      Remember, saddles are designed to PREVENT a fall as opposed to CATCH a fall like a traditional safety harness.

      Ihsaan1422 yup. Once at hunting height, there should be ZERO PRESSURE on the harness. Everything should be in the Sitdrag. Check DIY Sportsmans video about it.
