    It's good I can now identify thirds, but how are they used in music? Could you give an example? Great video, as always.

    • @Oddquartet
      @Oddquartet  6 лет назад +3

      That's a good question. Thirds are mainly used to establish the tonality of a piece of music. Major thirds are used when the piece of music is in a major key. Major keys sound happy / excited / playful. And minor thirds are used when the piece is in a minor key. Minor keys sound sad / lonely / frightful. So, the type of thirds used in a piece of music has a very big impact on how the music is going to sound to the audience.

  • @anurag4813
    @anurag4813 2 года назад

    Okay, so, really short and to the point video, loved it. But didn't really understand how to identify triads starting from a given root note. Are the third and fifth note decided on the basis of the key? Like, in C major, there are all white notes, so if the root note is C, the third and fifth would be the third and fifth note starting from C (first) all inside the notes of the C major key?

  • @konekoray9323
    @konekoray9323 4 года назад +2

    What happens if you keep the third a Major, but diminish the fifth? Is that even a thing? I mean, I am sure it is possible, but maybe it would just...sound really bad, so it is just not used.

    I have a question. So if we take the triad FAC Our 1st inversion is ACF and our 2nd inversion is CFA. When one looks at the root position it is obviously a triad because it is made up of two 3rds. FgAbC
    But there is a problem with both of these inversions, comma they are not made up of two 3rds ( correct me if I am wrong )
    1st inversion: AbCdeF. C -> F is a 4th, not a 3rd.
    2nd inversion: CdeFgA. again C-> F is a 4th.
    So are these still inversions since the are technically not triads?
    I am realizing maybe it is not a triad anymore since its values are inverted. So it is just a 1st inversion but is not a triad? Makes sense.

    • @fox-school-of-music
      @fox-school-of-music Год назад

      No. It is still a triad. Instead of a 3rd and a 5th above the lowest note, in a 1st inversion triad you have a 3rd and a 6th above the lowest note. In a 2nd inversion triad you have a 4th and a 6th above the lowest note.

    What is a third inversion triad?

    • @Oddquartet
      @Oddquartet  5 лет назад +3

      Great question! Normally you only see a third inversion in a chord that has more than three notes, like a seventh chord. If we take a C major 7th chord CEGB, the third inversion is BCEG. If you took the third inversion of a three note chord, you would get the original chord again.

    • @Oddquartet
      @Oddquartet  5 лет назад +2

      Great question. If the triads are arpeggiated, stack the individual notes up in thirds - just like if they were being played all at the same time. Then, it's easy to tell if your triad is in root position, first inversion, or second inversion. Hope this helps!

  • @timedriverable

    On the Bflat dim triad, why is there a F flat.As a newbie I thought their is no sharps or flats between e and f as well as b and c. This F should be a natural. Its always confusing to me and really throws me off. I see this from time to time in other music.

    • @Oddquartet
      @Oddquartet  5 лет назад

      Great question! Yes, you can have a F flat and a C flat. You can also have a B sharp and an E sharp. The sharp or flat sign only means to play the next adjacent note up or down on the keyboard, not to play a specific note on the keyboard. For the Bflat dim triad, the f flat was necessary because in western classical music triads are built in thirds. If I had used an e natural it would not have been a distance of a third from d to e, but instead a second. I hope this helps!

    But isn't being the lowest note in a tried what defines the root being the root? At 2:02 you say composers can change that by making another note the lowest of the triad and moving the root up, but wouldn't that just make the new lowest note be called the root instead?

    • @kristianze3755
      @kristianze3755 5 лет назад

      The intervals are what makes up a triad a major triad is always a root note, major third, perfect 5th and if you were to take that root note up an octave, the major third would look like a root note but it wouldn't be able to play its role because from a major third to a perfect fifth you have a minor 3rd and from it a perfect 4th to the real root note
      You still have the same triad but in a different version

  • @artlife2656

    The first inversion and the second inversion aren't a triads??? Cause we don't have three notes on spaces or lines but we have 2 on spaces and 1 on line
