Yes this help when transcribing, more people need to learn to do this on their own. It would help them in songwriting. 35+ years ago I noticed this and did my own personal research drawing our the Guitar cords by hand. Not only did I come to the same conclusion as you just showed but noticed the hand configurations were the same for many chords as well by baring the first fret. So there are really less than 36. 20 or less as they repeat. And then I discovered they could be moved up and down the fret board as what I learned some time later were celled movable rhythm chords. This is before the internet and any good books. Thanks to people like you, the new learners don't have to struggle the way we did, albeit it was a good learning experience.
This was EXCELLENT. As a sporadic guitar player over the last 20 years, I had never really tried to understand the relationship between chords which greatly limited my ability to create music. This is probably the cleanest explanation of the Circle of Fifths I've seen, thanks so much.

Great explanation and simplification of what can seem overwhelming especially to beginners but even people who've been practicing for years and are just now diving into the theory a bit more.
Man. Thank you so much for this. I’m at the stage you were at and I bought a book of chords and I hate it. I’ve always wanted someone to come alongside me and help me where I’m at. I’m a pretty decent guitar player, at least rhythmically, but I hate studying superfluous crap. This is such a lifesaver. Subscribed and liked, my friend.

How did I ever miss this channel? I’ve spend a lot of time studying on my own many of these relationships, but you’ve concisely summed up much of what I knew, and even more of what I hadn’t yet put together. Very well done.
Un believable finally I understand I have a chord wheel I bought years ago and have been confused and never looked at it again it’s on my table now and I am using it. Way to go with this. U b the man…..
I don’t want to write songs I just want to understand the fretboard. This video is the best I have seen that explained the circle and guitar relationship. Thank you!
I've been taking piano lessons and still found this very interesting. I like the way you've laid out the chords in Major/Minor/Diminished on the circle of fifths. One thing that I think I'd mention that isn't in this wheel is the harmonic minor. Using harmonic minors allow the dominant 7 chord progression i-iv-i-V7-i, which I think sounds very nice.
Ty ty Ty!!! I’ve always thrived on shortcuts and the way you spend little time convincing us we need to know this is lets me stay engaged and not drift off.
Extremely well put together video. Given its scope, new guitarists are going to have to watch it several times to take it all in. However, It will be well worth it.
Unreal. I'm not even working on guitar, but piano: this video is more helpful than any piano tutorial I've encountered. Massive props and respect. You should be paid VERY WELL for this kind of instruction. Liked/subscribed
As you're a piano man something occurred to me some years ago...my guitar is a piano..kinda. 6 strings all tuned to 5 intervals of a scale. With an E at each side. Your piano has keys..white for the natural notes, black for the sharps/flats. My guitar has frets instead. So you could view each string as a piano keyboard tuned to a specific note or interval. 6 piano keyboards side by side in effect. More to the point these keyboards side by side in standard tuning with, like a piano, a full chromatic scale beginning on the interval it's tuned to..12 notes..and every note across and along the fret board is in exactly the right place to enable it to be played. Scales..chords..licks etc. And the whole thing begins again on the 12th fret..13th for F and C. Then consider all the open tunings...and they work as well... AND you can add a seventh string and it still works. 12 Notes. 4 of them have no semi-tone between them. One note less..or one note more and it would not work at all. It always amazes me whenever I think about that..the simple fact you can play the thing. Even more to the point the fret board is a very complex thing..but it's complexity hides it's simplicity.
I know you're not asking me but; Chords are chords, no matter the instrument. The songwriting process for piano or guitar both can benefit from the Circle of fifths. The songs I have on my channel, my wife can play on her keyboard. Plus the cool thing about her keyboard, it has a transpose button - which works like a capo for the guitar. Not so easy for a piano.
Ian, very few of us are able to grasp the full potential of a guitar. The capabilities seem endless. and any effort to fully understand it might be a lifetime project. Just as I. You seem to have put some effort into a deeper level of understanding of the instrument. That gives me a feeling of kinship with you in your endless endeavor. I wish you good luck, and pleasant journey. I'm 91 years of age, and still trying working on it!
You’re right about these being the core chords … but I wouldn’t want to play only these chords! Even the first songs I ever learned used 7th chords; in fact the progression I was taught is I-IV-V7. Seventh chords are fundamental to the blues and everything derived from it. And I love the sound of suspended chords. So yeah, you can do some early 1950s hits with only major/minor, but if you want to get even to the level of the early Beatles you'll need more.
In fact the idea that you can make good music by only using the chords of the major scale - might not be a good idea especially for modern music. A large percentage, perhaps majority is in minor and don’t even use 1-4-5. Even including relative minor into that can still be boring and played out. Many of the sounds you seek employ modes. This was a major obstacle for me in music composition since I always tried to compose music using the chords of the major scale. Like you said other chords are so fundamental and so are modes, and blue notes. Etc.
When I was in college years and years ago you had to wait in line at the bookstore to get your textbooks and the line moved as slow as molasses at the North Pole so I used to read the books they were selling (never buying) . I chanced upon a very thin paperback book that contained songwriting advice and information from semi-popular songwriters. I was impressed by the late John Prine's words of wisdom he stated; "To be a good songwriter the main thing you need is a bad memory." I think that speaks for itself.
Hi Mike, your video is the best video on RUclips describing chord progression, esp how they work on the Circle of Fifths on the I-IV-V progression. A light bulb went off in my head. Great video. You got yourself a sub.
Thank you for explaining this in a way that makes sense. Ive been trying to grasp this concept for years. Today it clicked and I cant wait to get started. Hope your having a good day brotha!
This is an amazing explanation. It is the TRUTH. It is the elusive truth that the vast majority of teachers don't know, and every guitar player's life would be imeasurably better, less stressful and more optimistic if only we knew this at the beginning. I have played guitar since my schoolday, through university, as my main hobby throughout my career and now at 75, I still do. I didn't know this. It would have given me a worthwhile foundation from which to set out exploring stuff. Whaaay! I walked into the light with this video. Whaaay! Thank you! Absolutely thank you!
BOOOOMM...mind blown! I was taught by a Nun at school for 3years, on acoustic in the 80's and we never done this! I even got my RSA II from Trinity College of music in London and I dint know this. Wow, just wow.
Also, the 7 chord blocks you see on the circle of fifths create a very easy to remember pattern on the guitar if you group the 3 inner major chords together in a 1-4-5 pattern on the fretboard and then the 3 minor chords together in a 1-4-5 pattern 3 frets down. Super easy to remember.
Could you explain this a bit more please? Absolute beginner here just trying to understand what I'm getting myself into and this sounds really interesting! :)
@@simonvegas793yeh me too and I'm not a beginner. If we play C F G as our major what minor shapes exactly do we play 3 frets down? So, C major is related to A minor, but what does 3 frets down mean exactly?
This the most efficient and concise explanation of anything musical I have ever seen! If you truly want to understand the music you're playing then this is it! Everything else shows you gimmicks or half truths. Some make claims to play by feel but these will leave you where you were before, noodling on the same scales and chords you've been playing for years. Do yourself a favor and just take the time to process this information. GO SLOW and when it sinks in you'll know more than most of guitarist or even musicians that you know. 100% THUMBS UP and SUBSCRIBE!
Well Mike you have nailed it Congratulations this is going to help a lot of viewers quickly. Like yourself i have gone down the old chord book/chart route and i learned that way, but this would have saved me lots of hours.
One great thing about this video is that you make fabulous diagrams!! Thanks for that!! ps. when you played Pachelbel I noticed that the beginning was "Can't help falling love" hajj Elvis is everywhere xD

Great video. I would say learn the 6 chords from the circle (miss out dim chord for now) in the 2 or 3 keys you are likely to sing in, also need the 7 and major 7ths. The 7th of chord 5 leads you back to chord 1 and major7th are just so pretty. Don't be afraid to change key of a song you like to suit your range. Circle makes it easy to do this
Like you I bought a chord dictionary and literally memorized a few hundred chords. The circle of 5ths, which I found out about many years later, would have really helped me back then. Thanks for putting this out there.
I'm with you! If I'd have had a circle of fifths when I first picked up a guitar 40yr ago, I'd be a way better player today! Cracking video bud Thank you!
Man, I remember when I had the circle of fifths explained to me and it freaking blew the lid wide open on understanding music theory. Unbelievably helpful, if only I could find a great way like this to remember which chords are what degree in any given scale. Is there such a thing?
After your exploration of learning the hard way you shown the community how you found an easier method. However your journey has made you a better musician. Its hard work. Thank you I will be watching your videos.
Great video! I'm new to guitar but I've been making beats on my lap top and midi keyboard for awhile. I have an intermediate understanding of music theory. Can you make a video showing us how you use the chord wheel diagram to create a chord progression with extended chords and how to voice lead on guitar please? Thanks for all your hard work and expertise!!
If you are new to guitar then come see me, I have plenty of easy 3-4 chord songs to get those fingers working in sync. Nothing to sell, I just do this as a hobby. I make nothing. I get paid (not money) when people tell me that they are having fun and I'm helping them learn some new songs too.
Great presentation, great visuals! The Circle of Fifths is so powerful. Started brushing upnon6my theory last year and found out how much info can be derived from this. Wish I knew about it 20 years ago. Should be required study for any serious musician. 👍
This video trumps all the videos I've seen, so much clarity. Thanks a lot, from someone who rarely comments, but since I couldn't like a thousand times, I was obliged.
My son is learning to play guitar and listening to him fight the guitar is painful, but he never gives up! I have to show him this video to help his progression and he will surely be rewarded for his determination to learn! English is his second language after Thai, but I am certain it will help! He is 15 years old and trying so hard!
finally a video where dim chords are not considered "redundant, not important, nobody uses them" - thumbs up!

Great explanation and simplification of what can seem overwhelming especially to beginners but even people who've been practicing for years and are just now diving into the theory a bit more.
Quite possibly the best 15 minutes on the entire internet
It's called lazy, superfluous crap when it's used with knowledge is infinitely better and more complete
@@kippsguitar6539well this is part of music theory so he's moving in the right direction at least.
Can I invite you over, Sorry Der Mensch I don't mean to be intrusive, I'm just a guy here trying to expand his hobby. Not trying to show off, just give people something I wish I had years ago. So I made it. Just like this guy did. Circle of fifths has been around he just put it into a way people can relate to. It sure makes transcribing much easier too. My channel won't be for everyone, but it only takes a minute to check it out. I don't just want to start a channel I want a community.
God bless you 💓🙏 Thank you
How did I ever miss this channel?
I’ve spend a lot of time studying on my own many of these relationships, but you’ve concisely summed up much of what I knew, and even more of what I hadn’t yet put together. Very well done.
Un believable finally I understand I have a chord wheel I bought years ago and have been confused and never looked at it again it’s on my table now and I am using it. Way to go with this. U b the man…..
Amazing work putting this together, Mike! The 'why' is what's been missing all these years and it is so clearly explained here.
I don’t want to write songs I just want to understand the fretboard. This video is the best I have seen that explained the circle and guitar relationship. Thank you!
Best and clearest explanation of the circle of fifths I've seen!
𝑯𝒆𝒚 ☝️𝒀𝒐𝒖'𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒛𝒆 🎉
I've watched so many videos on the circle of fifths but it FINALLY clicked. I appreciate you for unlocking what it all means on the guitar!
Most logical explanation of the circle of fifths I’ve seen. Definitely going to check your other lessons.
Best Explination I have seen. So Simple but effective. You should provide a print out.

You made this simple and I applaud you. Many teachers will CLAIM their explanations are simple to grasp and they are not. KUDOS
Unreal. I'm not even working on guitar, but piano: this video is more helpful than any piano tutorial I've encountered. Massive props and respect. You should be paid VERY WELL for this kind of instruction. Liked/subscribed
If you wanna put it to good use, maybe I can help you practice
So learning only these chords to start would apply to piano also?
Brilliant... utilizing the Circle of 5ths! Thank you so much.
Etc.
The V7 chord is generally the only way that the vii dim chord is used in most music as it just adds the V as a root note.
I have learned more about chord structure than anyone has ever explained before. Thank you Mike this is priceless for me.
One of the best videos on RUclips. Well done and thank you.

I have to agree with ShockMarkets comment. I finally understand this almost 100% after watching it for the first time. Excellent explanation.
Very well explained. I finally understand the circle of fifths. Thank you

BOOOOMM...mind blown! I was taught by a Nun at school for 3years, on acoustic in the 80's and we never done this! I even got my RSA II from Trinity College of music in London and I dint know this. Wow, just wow.
Fantastic teaching, Mike. Really helpful!
Just wow! Been playing for decades but this takes so much mystery out of it! Great lesson without being overcomplicated !!
Am dm em? In bed and not guitar in front of me, but curious to know for certain...
In under 15 min. I can finally can use and understand the circle of fifths. This should be called Circle of Fifths for dummies. Thank you 👍
Clear concise and to the point! Well done and thanks a lot!

I've played guitar for 31 years and no-one has ever shown me this. I need a printable version of this. Awesome video. A lot of work went into it.
Wow thanks for these videos. I've never seen anyone explain these in this way.

Bought one of those circle of fifths book . . . Slugged through it up to my armpits . . . Your explanation is just too easy
THANK YOU 😀
One great thing about this video is that you make fabulous diagrams!! Thanks for that!!
ps. when you played Pachelbel I noticed that the beginning was "Can't help falling love" hajj Elvis is everywhere xD

This guy is the best…found him 1day ago and learned more , then In 8 years of playing ❤😮
Can I invite you over to practice, Sorry M M I don't mean to be intrusive, I'm just a guy here trying to expand his hobby. Not trying to show off, just give people something I wish I had years ago. So I made it.
Circle makes it easy to do this
𝑯𝒆𝒚 ☝️𝒀𝒐𝒖'𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒛𝒆 🎉
Like you I bought a chord dictionary and literally memorized a few hundred chords. The circle of 5ths, which I found out about many years later, would have really helped me back then. Thanks for putting this out there.
You nailed it dude
This has been the best explanation of chords I've seen yet 👍👍👍
All hasn't been playing Guitar this is more easy learned,he speak to understanding
Great lesson! There's such a lot of information packed into it, and your graphics are excellent.

I'd like to know that as well!!!
I study a lot of music specially guitar this week on RUclips..
Your video summarize every video I watched so far tx
Great video. Easy to follow. Presentation flow's, is concise and perfect length. I'm a follower/supporter.👍

Yes he did a great job, maybe you can visit me, I'm looking for some people who are more or less self taught at guitar
𝑯𝒆𝒚 ☝️𝒀𝒐𝒖'𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒐𝒏 𝒂 𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒛𝒆 🎉
I have some easy songs to practice on my channel, it's just my hobby, I don't make anything doing my channel
If you are new to guitar then come see me, I have plenty of easy 3-4 chord songs to get those fingers working in sync. Nothing to sell, I just do this as a hobby. I make nothing. I get paid (not money) when people tell me that they are having fun and I'm helping them learn some new songs too.
I have never seen this explanation before,,,it open up a new beginning for me,,,thank you so much…
Great presentation, great visuals!

Really appreciate your effort of putting this together - this is really helpful
My son is learning to play guitar and listening to him fight the guitar is painful, but he never gives up! I have to show him this video to help his progression and he will surely be rewarded for his determination to learn! English is his second language after Thai, but I am certain it will help! He is 15 years old and trying so hard!
