It's good hearing this teaching. I've used so much of it over the years. I've taught piano and have always stressed the circle of 5ths. I've taught my students that to find out the key fro the key signature, in sharps, the last sharp will be 1/2 step from the key. F# is the last in G; D# is the last sharp in E. In flats, the next to the last flat is the name of the key. In two flats, Bb and Eb the key is Bb/ Bb, Eb, Ab, DB, and Gb - the key is Db. So incredible how it works. Thanks again, Rick. You rock!

@Dex Vox it's only confusing if you try to understand it all at once. Music theory is a language, so you have to take baby steps first. If you don't understand something, go back to the basics until you do.

As for remembering the sharps through the clock I found that from key of g its 6th gets a sharp and it is kept to the next key so example is g,a,b,c,d,e#,f,g then key of d is d,e#,f,g,a,b#, c ,d then in key of e is same principle keep the previous keys sharp and add sharp to its 6th note. I hope that was expressed coherently.

Associate ALL the things. I can find any major key just by memorizing the I IV V progression in C, a clock face and BEAD. I already have this lesson memorized because I know those three things and how major, minor and dominant chords are made. The new stuff I learned from this lesson was easy to associate to the previous things mentioned in this comment. Associations help you memorize more while having to remember less.

3:03 Blue + Yellow pigment yields the color green
Yellow paint reflects most light at long wavelengths and absorbs light at short wavelengths. Because blue paint and yellow paint both reflect middle (green appearing) wavelengths when blue and yellow paint are mixed together, the mixture appears green

I rang the bell. I need to re-watch this several times as it's a little over my head. I'm hoping to grasp it at some point. I taught myself how to play guitar by copying finger positions for chords. After learning to play the chords, I started to recognize which songs used them. I don't even know the name of the chords I'm playing, but somehow managed to learn enough chords to play entire classic rock songs.

Yeah this isn't a total beginner lesson. There's things you'd have to know before learning this. I would say this is an intermediary lesson and not basics lesson. I took an introduction to music theory in college and at the end we had finished the circle of fiths. Don't worry though just learn at your own pace and then it will all make sense.

This is the best lessons in theory that I ever got so far. Maybe after playing guitar for some years now I'm a little bit more relaxed after I realized that I could not learn to play like my heroes, because I'm too old to become that good but I found my place in doing the music. This lesson gave me the Information for memorizing the circle of fifth with all the sharps and flats during the first view. It is amazing how easy it was and how easy to build every scale from there. And as a benefit I got the second dominant on top. Great lesson, it opens, no it blew my mind.

My very first lesson was similar to yours, although instead of being taught the circle of fifths to figure out the notes of each key, I was told to remember the major interval progression of whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole half. Then taught that the 1, 4, 5 were Major and 2,3,6 minor. I'm very glad I leaned those things so early! Its very cool learning about parallel chords and how they are used in a composition. So glad I'm know learning about more theory. Thanks for sharing so much. Your knowledge and background is amazing and inspiring!!!

"I Am the Highway" by Audioslave uses the 3 minor. Chris Cornell was a big fan of them, if I recall correctly. Everything in me wanted to go to Em when I was learning it, but it just works

Most of Rick's videos are so hard to understand, because the info is SO complex and I think he doesn't realize how much he's throwing out there haha. I'm in the middle of his book right now, and even that is hard to keep up with him, at times. But this video is absolute GOLD. He cleared up a few things I'd always wondered about for years. Never realized why they called it the Circle of Fifths until this video haha. Keep up the good work, Rick!!

Great lesson! I learned the order of sharps with "fat cows graze daily and eat barley" Flats were just BEADG with C&F not really being all that important. The Beato book is definitely on my wish list.

Primary colors of light- red, green, and blue. Secondary colors- red + green = yellow; red + blue = megenta; blue + green = cyan

shlomo mehlman True, but Beato is referring to the primary colors of pigment, not light.

I really got a ton out of this video! Knowing the sharps and flats in a given key using the cycle of 5ths was a mind blower.

Watched this video and scratched my head a bit. Dug out the theory books, tinkled on my guitar (I know chords and note names and very basic theory) Checked out some music theory sites. (for example the whole deal with 7th chords confused me). I made a bunch of notes for reference, and spent an hour this morning going through this video. I now understand it thoroughly. Great work Rick!

Rick sorry if I don't ring the bell but it's difficult for me to follow along at your time, but I always watch later every single live and take notes to schedule my jams on your topics. For example, right now I'm starting to practice and find voicings on the IV - I cadence you were teaching some days ago :)

I agree with Allan Holdsworth, the fretboard is one long scale and one massive chord. Just learn the geometry and it’s sound. Names are merely names...once I personalized the fretboard my skills took off.

Oldie but a goodie I got taught.
Order of sharps: Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle
Order of flats: Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles' Father

    • @edmundooliva6818
      @edmundooliva6818 5 лет назад

If I look at the circle of fifths, the first note with a sharp is G, right? Then D with 2 sharps and so on.
Why doesn't the acronym start on G?

    • @paulzeedijk5372
      @paulzeedijk5372 5 лет назад

@@edmundooliva6818 This saying is for the order the sharps and flats when added to a key signature in the circle of fifths.
For example the key of B major has 5 sharps and the order would be Father Charles Goes Down And - F# C# G# D# A#
Or the the key of Eb major has 3 flats, Battle Ends And - Bb Eb Ab

i had the problem to remember the order of the circle and for me it worked like this. I know C and the 1st 5th (G). From there i added 1 to the C and know that the next Note is a D. Same for the G which gets me to the A etc. That helped me to meorize the circle of fith much faster and also was a good formula to remember if i got stucked somewhere.
Second trick that helped me to memorize the right Sharps was to remeber that the Sharps are allways one half step lower the Note. So, if i know the right Order of the Circle, i can get easily the right Notes for the Sharps. For me that "longer" way works fine bcause i understanded the mechanism behind the circle of 5th. Maybe that is helpful for someone out there.

Dear Rick, I've been following u since you have started your channel. I've bought your book and learnt tons of things form you and still learning. Tnx so much. You have improved my musical ability. I want a small thing form you; since you are also a great guitarist, you aren't playing your guitar wrong but it buzzes in nearly all of your videos. Please fix it or take it to a luthier 🙂 again tnx for being and led us the right way in music. Respect

With a million subscribers there are always going to be some who do not know the basics. I think it's great to do a few "basic theory" videos like this, and then have a list of links to these basic theory videos. Then when people ask questions or get frustrated with other videos they can come back and review these basic-theory videos.

Rick, thanks for producing a music theory video that was easy to understand.
    RE: ring the bell
People who are subscribed to your channel do not need to ring the bell. The subscription takes care of that for me. Each day, I load up my subscriptions and watch all of the latest content, so I don't need a notification. A notification would seem to be redundant with the way the subscription works. I don't need a notification about the video because I'm going to watch it anyway.
Google seems to pushing content creators to do this 'ring the bell' thing, but no one has explained to anyone why it would be better than just subscribing and keeping up with those subscriptions. If you don't subscribe, but want to watch the videos, then maybe the 'bell' thing is an alternate way of doing things, but to be both subscribed and want the notifications is redundant.

    Great refresh course!
Nigel Tufel from Spinal Tap said 11th chords were called that because it means you play them 11 times.
