He was the grandfather I never had. I loved them both. I still cannot watch the later episodes due to the loss. I loved Will and Ellen and would have loved to have met them. ❤
@@paintingsbyjimhall i had an awesome Grandad too. He was huge! Over 6ft tall and built like a tank! We used to joke that when Grampie hugged us, we stayed hugged for a week lol
My "Pawpaw" was a lot like him. My Pawpaw passed in 2008 and I find myself holding back tears every time I watch the Waltons. Ironically my Granny was just like Esther too as well their relationship.
I was afraid you would get to this episode. Ellen Corby's performance was devastating that you have to believe it was very real. Especially knowing he saved her life after the stroke.
I loved that segment on the mountain. And yes, that part where Grandma said "Old man you live in all of us" made me tear up too. In fact I've got a huge lump in my throat now.
Grandpa Walton was one of my favorite characters on the show. It was so sad when he died. I used to pretend he was my real grandpa, as my paternal grandpa died when I was 4 and my maternal grandpa lived far away before he died 3 years ago. The scene where they're all on the mountain saying goodbye to Grandpa is so touching. I especially love when Grandma said "Old Man, you live in all of us." It makes me tear up just to type it.
My father really liked Will Geer. When Mr. Geer started doing Arby’s commercials, dad would surprise us occasionally by bringing home a big bag of Arby’s sandwiches and say that “Grandpa Walton told me about this place.”
Thank you Judy. I was off to college when this originally aired, and now 45 years later, I just saw it today. Loved the talking to grandpa Walton at his grave. Had me in tears. We all hope to be remembered so dearly.
Will Geer was bigger than life. He performed so well, the characters he played appeared to be created with him in mind. One of his best lines: "Skin that one pilgrim, and I'll getcha another!"
Will Geer was such a wonderful actor as Grandpa that any scene he was in became even more special. He is missed and will always be so. He had such a mischievous grin. Will you are loved by us all. ♥️
It was very sad when Grandpa, Will Geer, died. I remember watching this episode first run. It's touching Judy that it still brings back the emotion that you must have felt at the time. Thank you for bringing us back to Waltons Moutain.
Ok, so this one made me cry. The tribute must have been a really hard scene to shoot. What a great character grandpa was.... So much happened in this episode. Well you did mention it was a 2 parter. Will deserved that. I always enjoy the subplots. Always so well integrated.
I may have commented on this post before. If I have I apologize if I am repeating myself. This episode aired around the time my Grandpa died. It was the first time I allowed myself to cry for him. I still cry every time I see this. The character Will played was very much like my Grandpa. Boisterous, full of wisdom that carried me through life, and a lover of "the Recipe". It is a special episode to me.
I can see the emotion is still there. Like any "family" you learn to live with the loss, you never actually get over it. What a touching tribute to Will Geer.
I never had the pleasure of knowing either of my grandfathers, so I had kind of adopted Grampa Walton as my Grampa. I remember crying buckets at the scenes at his grave. It truly felt like losing my grandfather. I always loved the energy and orneriness that shown through so often.

It was sad Will Geer/Grandpa passed away. He was really great in the show, especially his scenes with Ellen Corby/Grandma when she always call him old man. I always thought it would have been interesting if Richard Thomas appeared as John Boy
That’s what is so great like grandma my daughter had 3 severe stokes in Oct last year she’s 41 and she wasn’t speaking but her husband has kept on and some of her first words were though singing I truly believe that’s what could bring anyone back from that dark place it’s all about the music thanks Judy for another wonderful episode
My heart hurt so much for you all when this show aired. I had not known that Will Geer had passed prior to the airing. Even now my eyes welled while you spoke of him. RIP Grandpa 💜
Myself tear up everytime I watch this episode. It felt so real. Will Geer was a huge part of this show as well Ellen Corby. Many fond memories and still watch. Great videos Judy
I was glad that The Waltons did a tribute to Grandpa and said goodbye in the way that they did. It was very heartwarming to watch this episode of The Waltons. The other part of the show that really touched my heart was when Elizabeth crawled into bed with Grandma and told her how she was missing Grandpa. When I see that show now, it brings me back to when my own Grandpa and my youngest brother passed away in 1981. Kami did such a great job when she crawled into bed with grandma and talked about her feelings. It made you feel like you were right there going through those same feelings. Will Geer will be greatly missed.
I thought it was beautiful how the whole family gave their true feelings for grandpa and Mrs. Bremmer, you could tell it was heartfelt and real. And of course Cora Beth and Mr. Gotti was always wonderful to see what creative things they would do
I meant to spell Mr. Ike Godsey These two people on the series were so delightful to everyone and it was beautiful to see their love grow for one another
I recall seeing this episode back when, it was tearjerking...and had forgotten about Mrs Brimmer passing and did not know the actress died in real life, you truly choose the best segments to discuss of/with, Thankyou,
My mother died in February of 78 and she loved the Waltons because she grew up in that era and said Elizabeth reminded her of herself, especially when she'd climb up in John's lap. I remember hearing of Will Geer's death on the news, so soon after my mother's death, I burst into tears. I wept not only for Mr. Geer and the loss of the character he played whom I had come to love, as I too watched the series, but I cried of course for the loss of my mother. To this day, whenever I watch the Waltons or see any of the cast I think about my mother.
Speech and singing come from different parts of the brain. I had a small stroke and struggled with finding my words but I am a metzo soprano and sang in the archdiocesan choir at a special event. That night I got a blessing and the Archbishop was surprised that I participated in the choir days after having the small stroke .
But, but, but...Judy! What happened after the camera stopped rolling after you all said goodbye to Grandpa? I couldn’t imagine there being a dry eye on the whole set! I’m in tears to this day every time I watch that episode.
This episode tears me apart. Will Geer (Zebulon Walton) was a great man and the character was great. I loved grandpa. At the end of the episode when the family was on the mountain, I couldn’t help but breakdown every time. Especially when all we have is memories. I don’t just want memories, I want the living. I only have one Grandparent left and I get sad sometimes because I don’t know how much time I have.
I understand. It can be a challenge to live in the present and look to the future. To appreciate the past but keep finding new goals and inspiration to keep looking ahead with joy and purpose.
That's why the Waltons are so special because of the realism. Some shows replace actors where this one dealt with death and the serious issues with strokes. Very touching.
I cry every time but this one got me big time. I was in 4th grade when the Waltons premiered I just absolutely love this show. I take a lunch break to watch on MeTV the days I can. Hubby bought me the complete set on DVD
Shows how good the writing was with so many sub plots going on, something for everyone. A big part of the show was lost without Grandpa, but we still had Grandma.
Every time I see this episode I cry mostly when Granma stands by Grandpas grave and says Old man you live in all our hearts. I love and continue to watch all the reruns. There will never be any more shows like these. Be blessed.
What a sigh! Will Geer, a larger than life individual. A loss, yes, but also an affirmation to life and to living. Beautifully seen in your segment with John Curtis. One of the most touching episodes.
Judy, oh boy! This was undoubtedly the conclusion of the best 4 straight episode run of the Waltons: End of season 6 with 1)The Return of John Boy and the mine accident 2) the Revelation and proposal to Daisy and emotional Departure to London, 3) Grandma comes home and season 7: 4) The empty nest. Wow, I needed a box of tissues throughout. Thank you for your channel! PS. If you ever travel through Elk Grove and Sacramento on highway 99 and see wildflowers and Poppys growing along the freeway , the seeds were cast in Will Geers honor (Don't tell CalTrans) : )
Wow - certainly a gauntlet of emotional episodes to get through. Amazing about the poppies. I love poppies and I believe I have driven that route and seen them. Next time, I think of Will.
That was such a sad episode! He left such a whole in the family! But it was beautiful too as everyone went through their own personal journey in that episode.
I was 15 when this aired, and I cried when hearing the news that Will Geer had passed. This was more than just a show for me, it was the embodiment of the stories my Grandmother had told me about life in the depression. Without ever knowing it, you were all a part of my family that I invited into my home every week. God Bless You All for giving us such great memories that I can revisit, at the touch of a button.
I cried my eyes out during this episode the loss of Will Geer was so sad. As each of you expressed him I'm your thoughts . May he and Dear Grandma Ellen Corby both rest for all eternity.
Speech is in a different part of the brain. My dad had a massive stroke and his brain, as was told to us by the doctor, was like swiss cheese but could sing and we could understand what he was singing. The ending of this episode brings tears to my eyes every time I see it.
Oh Judy, last week was a very emotional week for us. As we said goodbye to our beloved fur baby, lots of tears all last week. And then I watch THIS!!!!....lol....You got the tears rolling again!!...lol... I love that part of MaryEllen's tribute to grandpa, when John Curtis reaches out!!100% amazing!! That whole scene was not only heart wrenching, but the most heart touching scene I've ever watch!! You guys weren't just a 'tv family'!! You guys really were a FAMILY!! Thank you so much for all these little hidden gems and behind the scenes! God bless
That truly touched my heart in this reminiscing of "Grandpa", because he was such an amazing actor and friend to the cast. You were more than just a cast, you were family, and it showed!
I loved the scene with all of you at grandpa's grave. It was so touching, beautiful and emotional. I don't know how you guys played that scene without crying, you were such pros. Everything that each of you said was so beautiful and heartfelt. I also loved how Jason was helping grandma play the piano again. It was incredible to see grandma sing with Jason while playing the piano.
This was such a heart wrenching episode. Not only because we lost the amazing Will Geer/Grandpa, but because it felt like things were moving along so quickly! Mary Ellen and Erin moved out of the family home, Mrs. Brimmer was now gone, the General Store was changing, and John Boy had already left home. I wanted to say "Slow down! It's all going too fast!", but that's life! Love the actor Michael Conrad too----an absolute treasure! I did not pick up on the actress from the Dust Bowl Cousins! I love when you point out things like that in your videos. Thanks for sharing, I can tell that this one was hard for you.
I'm so appreciative that you share these experiences with us. Its nice that the emotions we felt as viewers was shared also by the cast. I never thought that one day we may get to actually interact with someone ( @Judy Norton ) from the cast and hear how these episodes affected them on and off the set. Thank you once again! Will Geer (Grandpa) was a wonderful man and actor. Gone but not forgotten
I enjoy the 2 part episodes. We got to see more of the characters personality. Will Gear was such a great actor and it would not have been The Waltons without him. RIP ❤
@Judy Norton - Olivia looked lovely in the peach dress. That makes sense that John would evaluate things after a grandpa passed away - they used to run the lumber yard together. Very emotional episode !! Then and hearing your video now Thank you , Judy .
Man, I remember this episode when it aired and after. There was a light that went out of the series as when anyone passes. It wasn't less loved but a little dimmer without that playful presence. I was a child then, and it did feel like a realloss for me.
This was so wonderful to relive that special tear jerking episode through your remembrance. I loved especially Grandma playing the piano & singing. The part where the family pays tribute to Grandpa is so touching. It also shows your emotion talking about it Judy. Thank you for sharing
What made it even more sad, was that Grandpa's death came right after he finally got Grandma home! It was like he got done the final 'chore' he needed to do, and was able to leave the family. It was truly sad.
Even after all these years, recalling Will makes you a little misty. A testament to the warmth of your memories ❤️ Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Judy.
That episode was so moving - having followed the series it literally felt like I had lost my own grandfather. I recall telling myself how much I missed seeing grandpa Walton on the series, it just didn't feel the same. Thanks for sharing Judy!
I never got to meet either of my grand father’s so I always pretended that zeb was my grandfather or I imagined that was how my grandfather’s would have been. As much as we loved Will, I know it must of hurt you all dearly with his passing, for you all grew up around his love. I also loved all the episodes you touched on today 👍💕
This was beautiful and moving. I cannot imagine the levels of grief from losing two cast members. Also, Judy, you and the other cast members had such natural and authentic ways of relating to the John Curtis twins. I think I heard you say that you and Michael spent time with them regularly. They were clearly comfortable with a healthy attachment to you and the others. Also, my dad enjoyed Will Gear’s character. He said he reminded him of his grandfather...a great memory to hold on to!
Judy (alias) Mary Ellen ... what a powerful episode for such a powerful character. Grandpa Walton was everyone's grandpa and it was sad when he was gone. Thank you for these nice fireside chats and thank you so very much for bringing such a personal perspective to the Walton's. You were indeed a very lucky person to have been associated with an American iconic series. Have a great rest of your weekend and Happy Thursday from the middle of America.
i have watched waltons many times over the years. this is the first time i noticed the end of season 6 when grandma came home and the new season 7 grandpa passing. this must have been hard on everyone including ellen after coming back from her stroke
Good morning Judy, it brings me much pleasure watching your behind the scenes post. As a child my family of 7 would gather around the tv & watch “The Waltons” every Thursday evening @ 7:00 pm from Selma, Alabama. We did this for what seemed like many years. Brings back so many wonderful memories. Thank you
In the movie "The King's Speech" it is brought up that, sometimes, when people suffer speech impediments (such as stuttering), they can sing fluently, with no impediments. I am unclear of the brain pathophysiology behind this but this is a known phenomenon.
The sister of an elderly friend of mine had a massive stroke and couldn’t string 2 words together. However, she could sing entire hymns! Our brains are truly amazing!
I worked in a nursing home and noticed that folks who had aphasia because of a stroke could not talk..but could curse. I ask the speech pathologist..and was told this was normal but I don't remember the explanation that he offered.
Judy....I learned about this in a psychology class. While the left side of your brain controls the right side of our bodies, it also controls our speech....that's why Grandma couldn't easily form sentences or speak. The right side of the brain, as we know, controls the left side of our bodies, and it's the right side that also controls our ability to sing. That's why Grandma was able to sing so clearly....the right side of her brain was telling her voice what to do.
It was so appropriate that in the episode that he was planting seedlings because he was so into plants and gardening. I liked him in Winchester 73 as he portrayed Wyat Earp. He was a great man. Your so lucky to have worked with him. This is a wonderful vlog Miss Judy 👍🏻😘

Yes everything about it was done perfectly.

Great memories. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it.
I love John Curtis tried to reach out to give you a hug , that’s so sweet! Love the scene.
Thanks, it was so special.
Thanks.
He was one of the great characters in tv history. The tributes at the end when everyone spoke to grandpa at the end was wonderful
Thanks, yes they were.
You are very welcome. It’s been a wonderful experience for me, too.
I enjoy the 2 part episodes. We got to see more of the characters personality. Will Gear was such a great actor and it would not have been The Waltons without him. RIP ❤
Agreed.
@Judy Norton - Olivia looked lovely in the peach dress.
That makes sense that John would evaluate things after a grandpa passed away - they used to run the lumber yard together.
Very emotional episode !!
Then and hearing your video now
Thank you , Judy .
So glad you enjoyed it.
I’m so glad all of you could pay tribute to both of them but especially Will. It was heartbreaking when he passed
Yes it was.
Absolutely beautiful!! 🥰
Thank you! 😊
Man, I remember this episode when it aired and after. There was a light that went out of the series as when anyone passes. It wasn't less loved but a little dimmer without that playful presence. I was a child then, and it did feel like a realloss for me.
Thanks for sharing.
You Have A Gift Of Story Telling. Excellent.
Wow, thank you!
This was so wonderful to relive that special tear jerking episode through your remembrance. I loved especially Grandma playing the piano & singing. The part where the family pays tribute to Grandpa is so touching. It also shows your emotion talking about it Judy. Thank you for sharing
You're so welcome.
What made it even more sad, was that Grandpa's death came right after he finally got Grandma home! It was like he got done the final 'chore' he needed to do, and was able to leave the family. It was truly sad.
Very sad. I’m glad we got that last episode with both of them in it.
Even after all these years, recalling Will makes you a little misty. A testament to the warmth of your memories ❤️ Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Judy.
My pleasure.
Love your videos Judy💕 Thank you, blessings!
Glad you like them!
It was a fitting tribute to both the character and the performer.
Yes i was.
That episode was so moving - having followed the series it literally felt like I had lost my own grandfather. I recall telling myself how much I missed seeing grandpa Walton on the series, it just didn't feel the same. Thanks for sharing Judy!
Such a loss for us all.
Thank you. Happy to hear that.
John and Olivia look so dapper. 😍 TFS, Judy. I do remember this episode. I still miss Grandpa Walton. ❤
Me too.

The reach out as lib was moving, that is why you are so good at explaining these episodes. Hard to lose a dear cast member!
I loved grampa, he was always commicle.
So true!
This was so good.
Thank you for that.
thanks Judy for doing this episode
You're welcome.
How lovely this is! So very special!
You are so kind.
💧💦life can be so hard and sad. Thank you for sharing these special memories with us Judy💖🌹💖
You're so welcome.
WHAT A NICE COMMENT ! 🙋♀️💐🏔
Thank you for your kind words. You have a wonderful weekend too.
Such a great episode! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks.
What a beautiful tribute. Thanks Judy. Love from Southern California
Thank you so much!
i have watched waltons many times over the years. this is the first time i noticed the end of season 6 when grandma came home and the new season 7 grandpa passing. this must have been hard on everyone including ellen after coming back from her stroke
Such a sad combination of events. However it was wonderful that we had that last episodes with both Will and Ellen together.
@@judynorton2598 yes it was
I wished they would have filmed a short funeral segment while the camera panned over all who attended. That would have brought more closure for me.
I understand.
Thank you
Thanks for all being fans.
In the movie "The King's Speech" it is brought up that, sometimes, when people suffer speech impediments (such as stuttering), they can sing fluently, with no impediments. I am unclear of the brain pathophysiology behind this but this is a known phenomenon.
Example: late country singer, Mel Tillis.
Yes, it interesting and encouraging for those with speech difficulties.
I totally agree he was wonderful!
