I was searching for 'A Christmas Story' and found this instead and decided to watch it. It's a week before Thanksgiving 2023. My parents passed away in 2021 and my brother shortly after. This somehow makes me feel close to them even though they are no longer here. I'm 53 now. We watched the Waltons together as a family, us kids laying on the living room floor. It's the only show my dad thought was wholesome enough for us to watch. I sure miss the simple and beautiful way of life from long ago.

I completely understand.. Most of my family has passed on.. parents, grandparents etc. the rest of my family live in other states etc. I get very sentimental this time of year, sad and just longing and yet very nice memories of days gone by with family surrounding me. Happy Holidays.

I always wish I would have children cause I said I would never treat them the way I was but that never happened cause I needed a compliment hysterectomy at 36. I went from being beat as a child to carrying it into my marriage. 😮😢 I hope you can get a chance to have what you want your in my prayers. I grew up in a divided house. Parents always fought and never agreed on anything. Tried to get me and my siblings to take sides all the time. It was rough. I’d go in my room and watch the Waltons along with Little House on the Prairie just so I could escape the chaos and dream about having a loving family environment of my own. At 30 years old, I still hope for a family of my own that is full of love the way the Waltons were.

Agreed with you, watching The Waltons bring peace to our spirits and dream to would have a family like them, full of love, respect to each other, a father who shows so much love for his wife, therefore the best example for their children. Even though we didn't get that, maybe some day we're gonna be able to find someone with good heart, humble and afraid of God.
      Well, we"re just dreaming.

It is a blessing that my family was always together and stayed close. My family was like the Waltons and we still are in a lot of ways. The only thing I didn't like about my childhood was that we were always poor in our live in 8 people family house, they made up for it with extra siblings. My poor Father worked 3 to 4 jobs at a time. I didn't even develop a strong relationship with him until he retired. He literally was the absolute best Dad any kid could ask for. He made sure our Mother was able to be home with us kids. 💞💞💞💞🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

2023, i still watch this movie, and all the tv show episodes on the Hallmark station, every night. Im 75yrs old. I cant go to sleep without the Waltons on. Im the oldest of 6, we lived on our grandparents farm for 3 yrs when i was a teenager. It was in tge early 60s, times were hard. Christmas was just a little something each. But we had plenty of Christmas cookies, every kind my Mom could think of to make. A fruit cake, one year, she made plum pudding! I loved it. I miss our Mom and Dad so much, miss seeing all my siblings very often. The Waltremind me of those hard times. With all the love they showed each other, it was such a loving, caring show. When you have family, its the best thing in the world. I wish everyone could have such good memories.

I've always loved this movie. I grew up in a family with 13 children and we watched the Waltons on a regular basis. Watching this makes me cry because I miss those simpler days. A few of my siblings have passed and mostly everyone else is scattered across the country. We grew up dirt poor but the memories I have are so vivid of a house filled with Christmas cheer and excitement. Even though we normally only each got a special gift and a pair of socks, we were so grateful just to sing carols and decorate the tree. Boy oh boy, those were some really great times! It's only November but Merry Christmas everyone! 🎄

Omg, I grew up with 9 other brothers and sisters! We lost our parents, grandparents and one brother to cancer. Its brings me back to the days of fun, hardships and love. We didn't have much, but were satisfied with what we had. Simple life, we truly cared about each other. I watched reruns with my mom up to when she died, so this show makes me happy but sad at the same time.

Robin and connie , you both wrote such wonderful stories of your life .
I envy you both ....and totally understand how it may have felt.
I only had one sister who was I'll, so I spent my childhood looking after her ...
...then my dad became terminally I'll at such a young age.
All I can say is somehow , even I was humble and appreciated simple things.
....and that family came first . They were my world.
I used too adore my father talking about his youthful "huckle berry fin " days ,
...wandering and playing in their farm with no shoes on. Lol.
He too came from large family , 7 brothers and sisters.
You're both right ....they were brilliant times back then.
Quieter, less stressful, more fun, loving and adventurous.
I too feel blessed we lived in those times before the internet
.....took over our lives and changed everything.
I call our childhood era , the " golden raw days "
Wish we could all go back and live that life again.
At least we can immerse ourselves into the waltons family ....
...and join them in everything they do , feeling like we belong there forever...
.....I often cry at how beautiful and powerful all their stories are .
I would be lost without them .
      💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚

freedom moon....you are an inspiration to all of us! You put your life on hold to care for your sister and your father. That is true love. Alot of people never experience the true meaning of love. It is very sad that these special memories are of the past, but we have to be grateful we had them. I too took care of my parents till the end, no regrets. I will be going through losing each of my brothers and sisters as we are all getting older. It will be hard, but the memories will keep me going. When you reach a certain age, the road ahead is much shorter than the road behind. Be happy that you did the loving thing by taking care of them. I hope you live a long happy life, may God bless you. Take care my friend!

The fact that so many people have expressed their love for the Waltons for 40 years, and watch the episodes over and over, never getting tired of it, shows how powerful it is. The love and respect the family has for each other, getting through the tough times, and in the end, all were tucked in for the night. Yes, there were skirmishes between them, they fought every now and then, like all families. But love always prevailed. The Waltons will never get old.

I’m only 18 and The Waltons hold such a dear place in my heart. I grew up watching it with my grandparents, and sitting next to my grandfather in their bedroom at night while he watched over my sleeping grandmother. We’d sit and watch the show and he’d interject to tell me a story about how that was just how it was when he was a kid. I watched it with my family when we moved states and it brought me comfort to know that family would protect and love me even when I had no one else. I’m sitting here, writing this as I remember those memories. My grandparents passed away Valentines of last year and I couldn’t bring myself to watch The Waltons until now. I may not have grown up during the golden years of this show, but never discredit how much this story can mean to those who are younger

I ask Dad why we had so much food all the time. He told me "I was hungry most always when I was a kid. Me and my family will never be hungry like I was ". This was my Momma's absolute favorite movie. It came out when I was two years old. Unbelievably, I had never seen it until I was nearly forty years old. One Christmas she asked me to come over and watch it with her. It was then that she told me about it, and when it was first aired all of those years ago. I absolutely fell in love with it and I have watched it, I don't even know how many times now. My Momma has been gone 9 years now and I can tell you that this movie keeps me close to my Momma. Patricia Neal is so close in nature to my Mother so it is an absolute comfort to me. I loved the Walton's series, but absolutely nothing compares to the Pilot "The Homecoming". This movie will continue to be my favorite, and my comfort, until I reunite with my Momma in Heaven in our own Homecoming❤❤❤.

@lynnMariEisaman6797, what a wholesome story! I'm sorry for your loss.... I know things never are the same again but I'm glad you have some good memories to hold onto and the hope of one day being reunited with her! ^_^ I never saw this movie and Idk if my beloved Mother ever saw it but upon it starting, I thought, "I bet Mom would've enjoyed this movie!" She loved old westerns and grew up in a rural area on a farm. After her first marriage we kids experienced a lighter side of farm life where we just had two gardens, several fruit trees and honeybee hives to care for.... We still attended school but spent our free time mostly tending to the gardens, we had almost ever kind of vegetable, fruit and several fruit trees. So we had to weed, hoe, fertilize, plant seeds, harvest, operate the tiller and tractor both of which Dad built himself. I still remember a typical Saturday, we'd be up early helping Dad whilst Mom would fix an old country breakfast of sweet rice, eggs, bacon, homemade gravy and drop biscuits.... We'd come running in to eat, then get back to work, Mom would finish cleaning and either start on laundry or begin helping with snapping beans, shucking corn etc.
As the youngest I always hovered around Mom and helped with processing the fruits/veggies and start storing in plastic freezerware, canning in jars, making jellies/jams but my fave was the honey! Those bees would do some amazing work making those delicious honeycombs filled with thick, sweet honey! Then on Sundays we usually went to Church and then the mall to do a little shopping, enjoying the indoor ice skating rink, toss coins into the fountains, enjoy delicious 6" chocolate chip cookings which you could smell all the way down the mall as they kept them warm on conveyors.... Then us kids would hit the gaming arcade and later meet up with Mom and Dad to catch a movie.
Really miss those simple times. I was there by my Dad's side during the last weeks of his life, he passed pretty young at 56 from cancer. I then almost lost my Mother a month later when she was 100 miles away working and a coworked called to tell me she couldn't breathe.... There was 2 feet of snow on the all of the roads so I knew there was no way I could get to her. I called my Pastor to ask for prayer and criedd thinking I just lost Dad, not Mom now and I can't even get to her.... Thanks be to God she recovered and eventually would remarry. Then her husband passed and then her health began to fail over the next months. We almost lost her and this was at the start of the "rona" disaster which made things so much worse.
Her only choices were to begin treatments 3 times/wk or wait until she passes away. She opted to try treatments so I moved her in with me and began taking care of her the last few years of her life. It was the most painful/stressful thing I'd ever done, ending up in the same hospital she was in one night after I suffered a medical emergency myself.... She then decided to go into the SNF before it "killed me" and two months later she was gone. That was just before Thanksgiving 2022.... In all of it, I don't have adequate words to thank Father God for the honor and privilege of being here for her when she needed me most! I am so grateful for life, life abundant, life eternal through Jesus Christ our Lord and for the precious Family, Church Family/Friends He has blessed me with throughout life thus far!
All of the pain, misery, agony etc., just don't compare to His goodness and His grace which "is sufficient!" It's going to be a blessed day when we meet our Savior face to Face in His glorious Kingdom and find our loved ones who likewise received Him, there rejoicing for all eternity! Be blessed fellow sojourners and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Scott, i just read your comment! Im almost 58, and I watch this movie every year at Christmas about ten times!! I bought my mom a dvd also. She loves it so much and saysit reminds her of her childhood. Shes 91 now and the last one left in her famiky and the last of the original residents in her neighborhood. Everyone is dead and gone, and now its either their kuds or grandkids or steangers. We had hard times, too. Im the middle of 9 kids. I xan relate to this movie somewhat. My first trip to Jackson Hole in 2015, we were headed up Teton Pass and I was looking in the valley and saw barns and fencing and a hay shed. I told my boyfriend who was driving tge rv, that sonething seemed strangley famaliar about thatt ranch down there, and it looked like the Waltons place on The Homecoming. Then later I found out I was right!! Its still an operating guest ranch!!! My bf was born in MT, raised on a guest ranch in Dubois, Wy., just 80 miles from JH. We just recently bought 11 acres there, and will spend the summers out there and winter in Sweet Home Alabama! Ps, they just dont make movies like this anymore. Im sure some will find this trivial, but I dont care. Look at our country now, led by insanitt and greed. Thoae people have forgot how it is to just go fishing, or jump on a Harley and take off thru the countryside, if they ever knew before.

The Waltons’ Homecoming really was the pilot for the series The Waltons. I watched the Waltons with my brothers & mother every Thursday at 8:00 for this program. Since my father worked shift work he did not always have an opportunity to watch with us but did watch when he could. I do wish there were wholesome family oriented shows like this today with lessons behind them and no violence, foul language, or indecent attire. This program has been in syndication since it’s premiere in 1972. The Homecoming movie aired in 1971. The Walton’s is based on the life of Earl Hamner Jr./his entire family. Earl Hamner Nara rates at the beginning/ at the end of every episode. **** I ❤️ it so much when they all say good night 😴💤 to each other at the end of each episode. This is a show that folks like to view to bring them to a happy time away from the problems of the world at present and crime with hatred, prejudice, violence, drugs, alcoholism and so forth. The Waltons brings viewers back back to a time when troubles like today were absent but depression surely was as well as hard times.😊😊😊❤❤❤

Hey, the first time I went up Teton Pass in Wyoming, I got to a side window in our motohome to look out over Jackson Hole. We were still in Wilson headed up the pass. I looked down and saw a barn, and a hay barn that looked all too familiar to me! But I had never been there! I thought, well that looks JUST like where the Waltons The Homecoming was filmed. After doing some research later on, what I had seen was EXACTLY that! Its a guest ranch in Wilson, and thats where the exterior scenes were done. The general store was actually a garage where some guy worked on cars. There are videos here on YT of those child actors playing in the snow in the town square of Jackson. They stayed at The Virginian Hotel, which is still in operation. The famed attorney, Gerry Spence, still has an office very near The Virginian. Went thru there 4 times this summer!

This is hands down the best ever Christmas TV movie. If anyone wants a break from the typical irreverent silly Christmas movies which we love but are all too many, check this one out with your family for the holidays. It is so underrated. The script is wonderful, the story of course heartwarming, the acting is wonderful. I don't know why they don't show it during the holidays any more; it is so simple and entertaining.

Yeah, most TV movies are crap, but there’ve been a few I’d call truly superb. ‘The Homecoming’, ‘Duel’ and ‘Brian’s Song’ are all TV movies, and all are among the best scripted television to come out of the 1970s.

In 1933 my father was 13 & my mother was 9, but they didn't get married until July 25, 1945. My parents just loved this program because it brought back so many memories, some bad, but mostly good and we made an effort to watch the weekly TV show. They told me that for Christmas, they would usually get a candy cane & an apple or orange & how happy they were to get them. When my father passed away on October 26, 2004, he was 84. My mother is still living and is 96. All of her family are now deceased & so is my father's family. She does have dementia & my sister lives with her in the house they moved to in 1964. My sister is carrying on a family tradition by having a vegetable garden & raising laying chickens. The kind that lay eggs. She does not sell them, but gives them to family & friends. As I have gotten older, I yearn for those gone by days, when we would all gather together on special occasions, especially Thanksgiving & Christmas. For you youngsters out there, please cherish every time you are together with family. What memories you will make!

I made the mistake of watching "The Homecoming," and then the Waltons, on TV before I read the book. I made it a tradition to read the book each year and then watch the movie. unfortunately it's hard to keep which Spencer family member is which Walton family member. It's also odd that it's Clay-boy, not John boy. Although I must agree. It's one of the best.

I can remember watching this show when I was in high school in the early to mid seventies. I also came from a broken home with a mom who worked long, hard hours to support myself and my three brothers. My father was too busy trying to "find himself" and never lifted a finger to help his children. As soon as I turned 15, I got a part-time job working after school and on weekends. I paid my mom rent to live at home and made sure I had enough left of my paycheck to pay for my clothes and shoes. The rest of my money I put aside to save up for a car. We often shopped at The Salvation Army thrift store for our clothes. Shoes were harder to find and generally purchased on sale from Payless shoes. Many evenings I spent sitting on the floor in our livingrm listening to The Walton's and doing my homework. Even though I thought life was hard for my family, holidays were still special for us. I am now 65 yrs. old and still find that life is hard. Somehow it was easier to get through life's troubles if you had your family to help you through it. My parents are both dead now and we siblings are scattered across the country. I still look back at that time as one of life's lessons for me. Family is so important for living life and more enjoyable too.

My Grandfather died suddenly in 1942, at the age of 45, just as the Second World War, was getting started. They lost the store and my Grandmother lived to be 94, years old and never recovered financially from the events that wrecked her, entire, long life. And mom and dads coffee they were sipping before bed. Im old now and gifts aren't important to me now. What I wish for , is in no store window or in an old fashioned catalogue. It's the memories we all once held so dear of simple things. Less time in stores, more with family. Less time with the t.v., more in church. Less gifts, more love. We all could stand a little Walton Christmas here at the end of August. For those wonderful memories. The peace we all seemed to have. We were young back in 1971, and most all the adults we knew back then were very much alive. None of the parents of the kids I grew up with in my hometown are alive now. They are all gone and strangers live in their homes today. The last one of childhood friends Dads lived to be 97, years old. He passed away in November 2011. Knew him as their Dad then he and I became friends after I was unable to go back to work in 2003. Sometimes life and time takes us down a road we never dreamed we would travel upon.

My brothers, sister and I grew up with these morals and values. I can't thank my Mother and Father enough for bringing us up to be good human beings, who are not only respectful to each other but other people too. We could NEVER, repay them for what they have done for us, RIP Daddy you were not only my Dad but my best friend. I love you always and forever.

I too grew up watching The Waltons. Sadly I didn't get to watch all episodes due to my leaving home at the age of 14yrs old. However, I've never forgotten the beautiful life lessons & cinematography. Gracias for bringing this on YT, especially during when most of society has no interest in moral values, self respect, charity, empathy, a simple life, leaning on Padre God & so much more. Peace be with everyone, Feliz Christmas, a healthy, safe end of year & 2024. 🙏 ❤

I remember when I was a little girl, it would come on tv during christmas break.. mom would pop popcorn, serve it up in a giant blue speckled roasting pan, my sister and I snuggled down on the floor to watch this. I love seeing how times where simple and people were grateful for simple things. For me its a sentimental thing and something to admire in the character of people of that era.. In a world today full of people who live with entitlement attitude I doubt todays people would have such strong character if depression would hit again.

+Jim Devers There is a scene in the movie [one of my favorite scenes] where John Boy goes to a black church to seek assistance from it's pastor , who is his friend and whose son had been invited to come visit by Mrs. Walton. John boy sits there patiently enjoying the congregation's Christmas Eve service. At the end of the service Pastor Hawthorne Dooley happily assists his friend in need , giving up some of the time he could be spending with his family on Christmas Eve. The Baldwin sisters also know and trust Pastor Dooley, whom they have hired to assist them in some of their daily activities. He probably helps them out of the goodness of his heart just as much as for the money they pay him. Please do a little research and you will find that there have been many world changing discoveries and inventions that can be attributed to blacks. Perhaps if you would look a little more to the positive you may someday be able to get rid of that chip on your shoulder. I don't think there were that many blacks or whites shinning shoes in those days since there were so many who could not afford shoes.
