The fact that you let people know that Walmart has inexpensive equipment that can catch you cat fish even though you use more expensive brands speaks a lot about your character. I love that you just want to teach people how to fish and not sell something that's not necessarily needed! Thanks again deiter!
I feel the same. A buddy of mine asked me about catfishing and told me he was going to save up for a $150 rod and reel combo yet earlier this month I caught a 22 lb blue on a $30 walmart rod. I explained it as "you don't need royal honey to catch flies".
I use to catch lots of fish when I had a boat. I always used cheap rod and reels unless I bought them used or I have points for free equipment on my credit card.
Fishing Shallow... I like to hang a live Bluegill 5 inches under a bobber and fish them about 2' out from the front of weed beds along the bank. Water depth about 18 - 24". I've caught nice Channel, LM Bass and Walleye/ Saugeye doing that.
Catfish lessons I've learned. 1. Catfish don't read the manuals. 2. Catfish relate to heavy cover just like a bass or crappie would. 3. Catfish will hit that chewed up worm you fail to replace on hook. 4. If you value your truck and trailer, and have no intention to interact with weirdos, don't night fish.
I usually tie good knots. My issue is, I use my main line braid until it gets too worn and week at the end. It will cast my weight and bait just fine, but break when you're fighting a nice fish. I finally started checking them by putting my foot on the swivel end and giving a hard yank. I had to pull off about 15' of line till I got down to some strong line that wouldn't snap. And this is 80lb. Of course I've used the same line on my rods for about 6 years now and know the line should be turned around and rewound or replaced with new. Check your Mono leaders too for wear, nicks, abrasions, etc.
😂I was watching “romance catfish” stories and came across this. Grew up ocean fishing in New York. Hubby wants to go fresh water fishing. Good tips. A lot seems similar.
Have a 1960 Shakespeare model GE, with a 1960 steel rod. Yes a all metal rod. In new shape. Would you like to have it for free. Just pay for shipping. Not a scam. Tex me back if you like it. First metal rod I've ever seen
Its funny, I don't break out fancy rods unless the occasion calls for them. If I'm bank fishing with crawlers and cut bait, I have more fun using a Zebco Bigcat or B n' M Silver Cat because they're rough and tough.
Homie all of that sounds really good. The fact is how i train my homepet catfish? I swear he behaves insanely bad i dunno what to do with him is any kind of Cesar Millan for Catfishes? Cause mine is so freaking bad i swear. Next life i will have a cat as a pet as everyone else. Those catfishes are always doing evil plans. I swear catfishes=bad fishes.
Two of my biggest tips from shore fishing is to use longer rods to cast farther and to use a Palomar knot if using braid. I used to use a regular "fishing" knot that everyone learns first and I was losing fish like crazy. The hook was coming off the line.. As soon as they showed me how to do that knot I have rarely lost a fish while using circle hooks. I learned about circle hooks way before they showed them on the In-Fisherman TV and magazines. They used them on long lines for ocean fishing and I spent a summer up in Alaska where they use them at least for halibut fishing. Way bigger hooks and they don't rust
BRILLIANT! I don't hunt for trophy fish..., if I get one, I've been really blessed, but instead I go for catfish to EAT "EM! Watchin' Mr. Melhorn's videos, I found several things I was doing wrong about my rig set up, and am looking forward to catchin' more fish... from the riverbank, no less!
I agree with a lot you share with the community but I feel one thing that doesn’t get talked enough about it location or region! I’ve fished east south and Midwest and every region is definitely different when it comes to night vs day deep vs shallow structure vs flats spring vs summer vs fall. All love here just think that’s something that could be share exp with the community for someone with a bigger following. Best of luck brotha keep the videos rolling!
Also memory fishing. Fishing the same spot just because you caught some in that spot. The most fun I've had I didn't catch a thing. Just getting out and enjoying the time.
Only thing ive caught with chicken liver is turtles lol im not complaining though i found the chicken liver at my fishing spot brand new unopened. I use some sewing thread to wrap it around the chicken liver.
do you know what types of shad are in lake Wyllie and the Catawba river by chance? ive caught more decent cats up 18 to 30ft this fall then i ever have!!
Mistake the hurts me: I use my braid main line until it gets too worn and week at the end. It will cast my weight and bait just fine, but breaks when you're fighting a nice fish. I finally started checking them by putting my foot on the swivel end and giving a hard yank. I had to pull off about 15' of line till I got down to some strong line that wouldn't snap. Haha you hit pretty much all of the things I've been stressing over with catfishing lately 😅 the big one for me is my local lake opens their gates at 6am... too late, and closes them at 10pm too early lol
when my dad used to fish more he said he used a big gloppin ball of peanut butter and bread. caught some pretty decently sized cats, 15-20 pounds! it seems that many fish just eat whatever they can get in their mouths haha
Dieter, in this video, you said that you like using chicken breast. In your experience, do you recommend mixing the cut breast with strawberry Kool aid for extra flavor? Please advise. Thanks.
Excellent advice as always Dieter. Thanks for sharing! One tip that I heard years ago that I've found helpful is don't be afraid to downsize your bait size, especially during the coldest time of the season ( I'm up north in Ohio). 🙂
I have a couple of 6.5 ft Ugly sticks that I've had for 20 years. They were 7ft, but I shut them in the tailgate.😂😂 Sad thing is, it wasn't at the same time.😂😂
Yep, no need for big or expensive gear. I've caught big catfish (about 3 ft long) on a piece of nightcrawler and a small no.2 hook in the evening hours.
Yes Sir you are right , I do learn a lots from your vid’s, thank you by the way.. yes one day my day off I just feel like go fishing. I’m thinking like nahh catfish don’t eat à day time.. but I did get one very good side ,,actually in Oregon catfish over 10 pounds it’s big I mean where I used to fish.. now I watch your vid.. you are truly right… 🤓🤓
The one tip reminds me of when I went and bought a big heavy weight out fit to catch big ones with, first trip out I was catching 3-4 lber`s and reeling them in like a 1/8 oz rooster tail there just wasn`t no fun in that. I`ve caught many nice cats 2 ft from the bank day or night.
We live close to the ohiio river east of Cincinnati trolling with planer boards is great way to catch blues here but we catch alot of flathead and for some reason flathead do bite better at nite we usually anchor fish for flathead with live shad
Turkey Liver is better than chicken liver. It freezes good and stays on your hook better. In most rivers and lakes Skipjack Herring is the best bait. We use to use the eggs and catch big fish. You let them stay in the sun and they stay on your hook.
I caught my 63 pnd flathead on a Walmart Zebco catfish rod, a 60 pnd blue destroyed the reel,I kept the rod and bought a Garcia reel to put on it, I've worn out and destroyed several cheap reels in a few seasons, and cracked a few rods, my equipment is better now but nothing is as exciting as trying to turn a big blue cat that's running with the current with a 45dollar rod and reel combo from Walmart. By the way,l am blessed to live 10 minutes away from lake Wheeler, and I have hooked some from the bank that I could not get in.
The fact that you let people know that Walmart has inexpensive equipment that can catch you cat fish even though you use more expensive brands speaks a lot about your character.

All of my fishing gear comes from Walmart, garage sales or thrift stores. I catch plenty of cats & bass!

i stumbled across this man channel and its relaxing coming from Missouri its like taking advice from a uncle, keep it the good work
My biggest mistake was tying bad knots
I usually tie good knots. My issue is, I use my main line braid until it gets too worn and week at the end. It will cast my weight and bait just fine, but break when you're fighting a nice fish. Lost a lure today cuz I rushed it 😂😂
I used the clinch knot and just recently realized it’s not as strong as the others the more you know right
My biggest mistake was using 10lb zebco line, I lost three 10+ pound cats bc of that line
Yep and not using plastic beads
😂I was watching “romance catfish” stories and came across this. Grew up ocean fishing in New York. Hubby wants to go fresh water fishing. Good tips. A lot seems similar.

The number one advantage to fishing for cats at night is that the game wardens are sleeping.
Its funny, I don't break out fancy rods unless the occasion calls for them. If I'm bank fishing with crawlers and cut bait, I have more fun using a Zebco Bigcat or B n' M Silver Cat because they're rough and tough.

Yall should try cherry kool aid with chicken breast the other day I caught a 21 pound blue cat
I invite you to come and fish our town lake in Texas cosden lake in big spring tx
So true (you don't need heavy, expensive gear). I've caught more fish on my lightest rig, a Lew's XJ. Also, not expensive, $39 at Walmart.
right! i caught more fish on a $5 snoopy reel than my buddy did on his fancy penn setup.
Catching HUGE catfish is not something that I am into, 2 1/2 lb up to 20 lb , I'm a happy camper.
Those are good tips. Especially the Deep one.
Most people don't even know what it takes to break an Ugly Stik they are some of the strongest rods I've ever seen
My dad has a really good 6 and a half foot rod with an Abu Garcia reel and I’m so tempted to take it catfishing with me
Largemouth bass make excellent bait!

I totally agree!
Also memory fishing. Fishing the same spot just because you caught some in that spot. The most fun I've had I didn't catch a thing. Just getting out and enjoying the time.
I’ve had my best luck with worms when catching cats can’t get anything with chicken liver and it falls off easy
Gizzard Shad (larger) and threadfin shad (smaller / more abundant)
Cool thanks for sharing your videos. What size of catfish are best to eat? And why. 👍🏻
Mistake the hurts me: I use my braid main line until it gets too worn and week at the end. It will cast my weight and bait just fine, but breaks when you're fighting a nice fish. I need to find one of those neon signs.
The best fish I've caught came out of 2 to 4 feet of water
when my dad used to fish more he said he used a big gloppin ball of peanut butter and bread. caught some pretty decently sized cats, 15-20 pounds! it seems that many fish just eat whatever they can get in their mouths haha
Dieter, in this video, you said that you like using chicken breast. In your experience, do you recommend mixing the cut breast with strawberry Kool aid for extra flavor? Please advise. Thanks.
I challenge anyone who wants to catch huge blue cats come to cosden lake in big spring tx . It’s a small town lake but you will be surprised !!
Excellent advice as always Dieter. Thanks for sharing! One tip that I heard years ago that I've found helpful is don't be afraid to downsize your bait size, especially during the coldest time of the season ( I'm up north in Ohio). 🙂
My biggest catfish have all came on half dollar size baits.
Your talking about using chicken I live in Joplin Carthage Missouri area and just find chicken works very well
I have a couple of 6.5 ft Ugly sticks that I've had for 20 years. They were 7ft, but I shut them in the tailgate.😂😂
Sad thing is, it wasn't at the same time.😂😂
I really enjoy your down to earth information that we all can relate to. Thank you and please keep it up.
Thank you! Will do!

Baits, chicken breast, blue gill, hotdogs, chicken liver, dough balls, worms, jello chicken 🤣, they all do ok if the fish are biting 👍
I appreciate your honesty, right from the start you earned my respect. Great instructional video and excellent advice. Thank you sir!
Thank you very much for the kind words!
Catfish can be caught all times of the day. But night fishing is prime
Thanks for all you do to help us newcomers...especially on a limited income! Your tips have helped me a lot!
Awesome!!!
So Helpful! i really like your boat! some of those cats you have caught are massive too!
We live close to the ohiio river east of Cincinnati trolling with planer boards is great way to catch blues here but we catch alot of flathead and for some reason flathead do bite better at nite we usually anchor fish for flathead with live shad
Best tip: The best bait is the one you just used to catch the last fish that you caught.
In the summertime it's better especially in texas with 100 degree Temps
Got my first cat today was fishing for bluegill now I’m hooked
Great tips Dieter! Keep at it brother!
Best cat fish bait I've ever used is hot dog dipped in peanut butter.
You are very professional and excellent, I love you dear

The Arkansas river
We are going to have to change the saying, hindsight is 2020, or was it trying to tell us something all along :S
Learned a lot watching your videos glad to see you doing more lives.
Thank you for your information! You are the BEST 👊
Thanks Dieter big help much appreciated
How do you know if a river has catfish? I have one 2 blocks from my house
Ask other anglers there
Best baits for brown bullhead
Turkey Liver is better than chicken liver. It freezes good and stays on your hook better. In most rivers and lakes Skipjack Herring is the best bait. We use to use the eggs and catch big fish. You let them stay in the sun and they stay on your hook.
Thanks Dieter for the helpful tips!

Bread, hotdogs, spam or corn.

What type of bait and what size hook for those?
@@yungtree5254 I use #8 circle hooks and live blue gills
Lake wheeler in raleigh ?
I live by there too and just started fishing, great to hear of a good spot with massive fish.
@JamFlexx Wheeler lake in north Alabama
