Good info! Honestly all the flatheads I caught this past year ( which wasn’t a lot😂) was on cut bait. I was fishing below a dam in Wisconsin last June with a live blue gill. A tiny snot rocket pike that barely fit it in its mouth killed it. Cut the head off and later put a 20 pounder in the boat. Lol. PS keep the hair. I’ve been in East Tennessee for 15 years and haven’t fished yet but that’s about to change as a result of finding your channel. I used to fish deep channels at night for sail cats and loved it. @@RiverCertified I'm a big fan of the podcast so either way you decide works. I'm pretty good at trial and error at figuring out what works. What I'd like to learn is more about reading rivers and waterways and possibly the ways other people fish certain situations so I can try and apply it to the waterways that I fish up this way
Another thing to touch on is cut bait presentation. I'm sure you have heard of it but from my experience a flapper rig works wonders. You basically fillet your bait up both sides to the head but leave the fillets attached to the head and pull the spine and tail out. You get the scent from a cut bait and when hooked through the mouth or eyes you get a swimming like action if fished in current. Hope this helps someone out! Tight lines 🤙
@@RiverCertified well generally it won't help I don't think but the specific rigging I talked about has helped me. Someone taught me so I figured I'd pass it on. Try it out maybe. Good luck!

I don’t have flatheads or blues in my area, I don’t think. Never saw or heard of someone catching one. But I feel like the tips were helpful for even the channels I do get. You’re always killin it, man.
Yea first. Sorry it took me a while but I was watching a film and needed to see the end! Couple of half decent slurpers and flat ones as well I was getting bored of the Blue movies!!!😃😃😃🤣🤣🤣. Great to see Ryan minus a beer unless he kept it hidden! Back on the channel it has been a minute or 4. The advise at the end was spot on and is right for all types of predators from slurpers to Ray's to Cod sea bass 20 mins and change baits has always been a good rule I have tried to stick by I find a side of fish works for me better than a slice through. I also use bait elastic to make sure the bait isn't stolen and gives the hooks a better chance of finding a good home
I was happy to post a video of something different. Hopefully more flatheads and hanging with Ryan coming soon. Ad far as rubber holding baits, I'm lucky flatheads are greedy enough we don't have to worry about them stealing baits haha
Nothing better than waking up at 6 AM and seeing your buddy fighting a flathead. Only thing better is when its on one of your poles. Definitely going to use some cut bait this year for the first time. I have always been a warmouth/goggle eye live bait guy. Its how I was taught. also planning on using frozen tilapia/mullet and live crawfish.
I believe, flatheads or yellowcats, what they are often called in Texas, are more of a predatory fish. But I do I agree that they will not pass up a meal if hungry. I have heard dozens of stories where someone catches a 40+lbs while jigging for crappie. Enjoyed the video, young man, you’re doing an excellent job. Keep it up. Blessings.
I seem to only catch them on cut bait. Today I had 3 rods with live Bluegill out and 2 rods with cut bait. I couldn't keep the Channel Catfish off the live Bluegill and the only Flathead was caught on cut bait. My personal best Flathead was caught on cut bait too.
And thanks for your content. Cut will catch flats but I still prefer live whenever possible. I doo shotgun baits to start with at most spotslive, cut, assorted sizing, distaances from the hill or channel. There is one instance where I only use cut for flats, during a heavy storm inflow from creeks, culverts, and pipes. Cats-including flats-go into that feeding frenzy and try anything that enters their spot from the inflow. Cut works wonders there beings they know it's shad, bullhead, carp, gill, when they test it. Different point. I lived a few years north of Ft Dodge where the east/west Des Moines came together. All the bait shops had spoiled carp which I've used since but have never found anywhere else-most have no idea what you're talking about. Those blues and channels seemed to come upriver for miles to find the source of that stink. Not rotted carp, spoiled. Hook em!
Hitting the Connecticut River on the Massachusetts and New Hampshire boarder tomorrow with my pal to try to get us some Cats. Your channel is real fun to watch glad RUclips sent ya my way! 👍🏻
You had Better look than me when I went to the mountain earlier this week. I went after work did not get one bite in 3 hours. Congratulations looking forward to more awesome content!
I hooked into a 12.5lbs blue catfish last weekend fishing from the bank. He was one of the cleanest blue catfish I had ever seen. My wife’s friend wanted to keep him for dinner, but I threw him back in. A blue cat that size deserves to get even bigger. I caught two 4 pound blue’s later in the day and her friend kept them.
That’s one thing we have a lot of is flatheads. My favorite bait is female blue gill. I like to put a few drops of anise oil on my cut bait. They love that stuff. Thanks for the info Man
In Minnesota(Minnesota River), I’ve caught many 40-50-60 plus flathead on cut bait or just solid piece suckers(dead). But the BEST bait for BIG flatheads are bullheads! With bullheads, you’ll NEVER have a turtle problem also! So if you got something playing with it, it’s a fish of some kind!
I liked all the tips at the end of the video, that was very helpful. Thanks very much! I've only caught a single flathead in my life and it was eh maybe.. not even a pound lol And dang what a way to wake up, I know I've said it before. But dude you're absolutely living the life. If you're ever wondering around NC you gotta let me know, meeting you would be too sick.
Good stuff man, I'm new to the catfish fun an most of what I know came from you & the old In fisherman videos. We only have the channel cats up in my parts but still a darn good time. I've never used cutbait and can't wait to try it this spring. Thanks for the knowledge. Great video.🍀🎣🤘
Infisherman stuff has taught me so much that has helped me over the years. Doug Stange is my idol haha. Channels are fun and they love cutbait. Good luck dude!
I live in southern Colorado. We have 2 reservoirs that have flatheads. I've been fishing for flatheads for about 3 years now. I use cut bait on one rod and live Sunny's or gills on the other rod. I've never caught a flathead on cutbait. Just blues and big channel cats. The flathead always eat the live bait. I will try your technique for cut bait this summer. I hope to catch a flat head on cut bait. I don't really keep too many flat heads, but every single Flathead I've kept, has crayfish in its stomach and that's it. So I'm going to try putting crayfish meat on the cut bait as well
Sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what's happening on your water man. Seems like the smaller flatheads really love crayfish, but a big one might scoop one up anytime. At least that's what I've seen here.
Best flathead cut bait is a 12" sheepshead. Cut the tail fin off, add a 10/0 circle hook, and cut the head off. A few extra slits in it help. Fresh cut bait works far better than tainted like for channels.
Here in Wisconsin it's cooold! It's nice seeing you in your summer wear. Always hope for warmer weather. I love your videos, Spencer, and one day I wanna have a rod & reel b outfit just like what you have. I like fishing, too.
I have a buddy that takes his bluegills and crappie and even shad chunks and soaks them in menhaden fish oil for a cpl of days. He swears it makes a huge difference when fishing for catfish. Just an idea ……but he swears by it so I do trust him! He’s been catching monsters for years😎👍👍
I fish in the Colorado river area. Mostly lower Havasu. No blues. Flathead and channel cats. I've gotten most of my flatheads on cut baits. 9 times out of 10 I'll cut a live bait to use for flatheads. It's more productive for me than live bait. Enjoy
Fun story. While I still am lacking in the flathead category, in my area, MD, we have blues and channels mostly. Common wisdom here, skip jacks, alewife, and bluegills are key. I thought I would experiment this last year a bit. Fresh trout heads (because I ate the bodies, yum) are good, but my buddy sends me fillets of Salmon from AK. A very oily fish. I was cutting out the pin bones, and thought "why waste this?" I cut the sliver a little fatter than normal, to include the skin. I went out, and had blue gill, trout, and salmon out. Only salmon hit all day. I have tried it several times now, and I have had an 80 percent(ish) success rate. I think because it is oily. Locals are against it because it isn't a native food source. Well, when I get to eat fried fish, I call it a win.
That is a big misconception across the board for sure. However I put out alot more live Bait rods in conjunction with cut bait. Ill do some more experimenting this year, we always had good luck with leopard frogs on channels. I'll have to try more for flatheads. Thanks for the tips man! Can't wait for the spring run!
do you have a video of the rigs that you use for the different types of water you fish in in. i have watched several of your videos and i noticed you use a multitude of different setups. love your vids
Rule number 3 is a must and I really appreciate the tips. Only problem I’ve had is catching shads I’ve never use a cast net before so do you have any tips on catching them with a Rod and what to use to catch them? Been dying to stock my live well with them
Stocked trout works amazing in Pennsylvania as cut bait. We cant use carp here in pa but are allowed using any legal size game fish cut small mouth works great for channles
I literally had no interest in flathead fishing until I watched you catch a few. I hear the James River in Richmond is a great flathead spot and I live close, so time to lay out a buffet
Love the videos man I’m from Arizona and never caught one so thanks for the info definitely gonna use live and cut bait suck that’s the rod limit is 2 rods
Oh boo goo 😢😢😢😢. I wish I had a boat to go. I would love to enjoy fishing every night or day. I’m retired/ disabled I have RA and Sarcoidosis. Happy Fishing to y’all
This is some wisdom man! Thanks for sharing, really appreciate it. I have yet to purchase a cast net, so my bait is generally limited to sunfish, bluegills and creek chubs. The place I catch bait is full of suckers, so do you have any recommendations for getting one of those on a line? Keep these excellent videos coming man!
I couldn't agree more with the puttin out a buffet..I went fishin last night and had strawberry chicken, chicken livers, live bluegill my girlfriend had just caught and fresh cut bluegill which she had also just caught......I almost had to fight off a big blue heron which zeroed in on the couple of bluegill and 1 green sunfish I had got...tight lines brother

Ive been having a lot of luck on blues and flats using palm sized chunks of the belly meat with skin on from my smaller blues and channels. I caught 3 blues over 20 and a 43lber last week. I also had 3 stainless hooks snapped in half over a few days period with basic shore lines.
@@RiverCertified I was having some luck with store bought perch-it was too cold to catch any bait- but most of the blues were in the 4-10lb range. Catching a 20+ pounder is still really good for rod and reel using the scraps that usually get turned into turtle food. Or were you using small live blues? I have tried using 1/2lb-2lb channels and blues over the past few years on jugs and haven't had a monster cat rip into them yet. I usually end up letting them go after 2 or 3 days of surviving out of pity lol.
@@RiverCertified my shore lines are pretty redneck though lol. I use the metal electric fence post with the rubber coated loop top and the u shaped prongs on the bottom with maybe 20 ft of line on em. I live on the first cove coming off the Cimarron River in Oklahoma and I can walk right up to the Chanel drop off on the beach, it goes from sandy beach to 10+ft deep in the span of 2 or 3 big steps. So the baits were never more than 10-15 ft from the shore and I take the kiddos to check em a few times a day. I did test out the soda bottle jugs with a hole in it that I saw in a recent video on here for shits and giggles. I did catch that 43lber, a 27lber and a couple of blues in the teens on the shore lines i attached the small vanilla coke bottles on while using the belly scraps-skin and grey skin still on but with about half of the tough skin peeled back to help expose the oily red meat- but it could have just been the lines being elevated along the thermocline of the drop off more than the soda. I've got to test it out more before I call it a successful hack
First off I could never get tired of fishing love your videos brother never really had an opportunity to fish for flatheads love too though I'd hate to leave this world without ever eating any that would be a waste of life as for the advice I've often been told to catch one you must use livee bait never believed it though its always a matter of being at the right place at the right time I hooked a monster alligator gar once fishing for catfish using chicken livers thought it was a huge turtle at first but when I pulled up on him he surfaced and I couldn't believe what I saw he had to be at least 6 foot long and 160 to 200 pounds funny thi g is he was only in water less than 3 foot of water once he realized he was hooked though he turned and pulled drag on that reel till that steel leader broke I was using 40 lb test line keep the lines tight and keep the video's comming enjoy your attention to details especially when you take people out with you and your catch and cooks ah the simple life

I haven't been super big on the presentation of cutbait, but I probably should be. Great info man. I appreciate it!
@@RiverCertified well generally it won't help I don't think but the specific rigging I talked about has helped me. Someone taught me so I figured I'd pass it on. Try it out maybe. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips bro..... You are the Catfish whisperer and I really appreciate you.
I don't know about that, but im glad you enjoyed the video man!
Man that flathead bite mustve literally woke you up from the deepest slumber of your life. haha nice fish!
I sleep pretty good in my boat haha. Thanks dude!
Well look who the hell shows up !!! I thought our little sister didn't like fishing any more lmao good to see you two back at it we are gonna miss that man but we are all very happy for you and being able to live your dreams Spencer of all you and miss certified deserve it more than all take care buddy and God speed brother !!!
Just heading home from a catfish trip with Ryan actually. I appreciate all the kind words man. Means a ton!
I don’t have flatheads or blues in my area, I don’t think. Never saw or heard of someone catching one. But I feel like the tips were helpful for even the channels I do get. You’re always killin it, man.
That's a fair point. Fish are fish no matter where you go. Thanks for watching man!
THERE ARE FLATHEADS AND CHANELS IN EVERY FREAKIN STATE ?^$
Couldn't agree more haha. Definitely keep using that live bait, but it's never a bad idea to mix in some cut bait
Keep it up.
Blessings.
I agree a 100%. Cutbait definitely isnt magic, but its good to utilize at certain times. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm gonna keep doing my best!
That sounds about right haha
Hook em!
I appreciate all the info. Thanks for checking out the video too man!
I'm glad you mentioned leopard frogs. I seemed to always catch flathead on leopard frogs growing up.
I'm gonna try them for flatheads this year
Hitting the Connecticut River on the Massachusetts and New Hampshire boarder tomorrow with my pal to try to get us some Cats. Your channel is real fun to watch glad RUclips sent ya my way! 👍🏻
Good luck! Hope you beat em up!
Thank God for flathead season. Nice fish.
Thanks Roger. My thoughts as well.
Good stuff. That kind of knowledge is hard fought....much appreciated.
You had Better look than me when I went to the mountain earlier this week. I went after work did not get one bite in 3 hours. Congratulations looking forward to more awesome content!
Hopefully your luck turns around for ya next time you get out man! Glad ya enjoy the videos!
Down here in Texas we use cut Buffalo a lot as well as cut drum. Very oily as well. Great video..
Hell yeah man. Glad ya enjoy it!
That’s one thing we have a lot of is flatheads. My favorite bait is female blue gill. I like to put a few drops of anise oil on my cut bait. They love that stuff. Thanks for the info Man
Thats awesome you have a bunch of flatheads! Hope the fish keep biting for ya!
Those are studs man. Hope you keep catching them!
I liked all the tips at the end of the video, that was very helpful. Thanks very much! I've only caught a single flathead in my life and it was eh maybe.. not even a pound lol
And dang what a way to wake up, I know I've said it before. But dude you're absolutely living the life.
If you're ever wondering around NC you gotta let me know, meeting you would be too sick.
I'm definitely a lucky guy man. I try not to take it for granted! I'll do my best to let ya know if I'm ever down there!
I find for channels nightcrawlers work for me. Western area fishing
Infisherman stuff has taught me so much that has helped me over the years. Doug Stange is my idol haha. Channels are fun and they love cutbait. Good luck dude!
That was good information. I was even taking notes. Awesome job. Need to do stuff like that more often
Haha thats awesome. Hope the info helps ya catch a few more.
Awesome Video! LOVE Flahead Fishing!!! 🐟🐟🐟
It was good to see Ryan again and he caught . I don't care if it was old footage , I wished he could have stuck around longer to hear more arguments .
Thankfully there will be lots of that coming up in the next few months. I can't wait either.
Love your videos 🤩🐟🎣
I wish I caught enough fish to keep the pliers on my belt. Also I feel you on the cast net, on number 3 in the last 2 months
Great info man! Caught my biggest flathead last year on a hand-sized piece of silver carp.
Solid option. Hope you get a bigger one man!
Great video! I've definitely caught more flatheads on cut bait than live bait.
Thanks man! It's a good idea to use em all, at least I think so!
Me too. I'm fishing Az
Yes i agree what kind of hooks did you use...pound😂 test line. wow so much info missing.
All my gear should be linked in the video. Hope that helps!
Great tips. I'll be buying a new Kayak that holds more gear this summer so I can camp on the rivers. The tips are handy.
Awesome dude. Hope they help!
I will catch them down here sometimes on cut mullet . Good info Spencer . Tight lines !!
Thats sweet. Good luck dude!
I'm pretty dang lucky to be able to head south. Hope you get that combo man, and I hope you love it. I appreciate all the support!
I have a buddy that takes his bluegills and crappie and even shad chunks and soaks them in menhaden fish oil for a cpl of days. He swears it makes a huge difference when fishing for catfish. Just an idea ……but he swears by it so I do trust him! He’s been catching monsters for years😎👍👍
Definitely ain't gonna hurt a thing. Might start experimenting with that a bit. Thanks man!
Brim and crappie is perfect cut bait my father caught a 40lb catfish years ago at Washburn lake
Channel and Blue cats like it too, Flats love live bait. Mainly large ones.
I fish in the Colorado river area. Mostly lower Havasu. No blues. Flathead and channel cats. I've gotten most of my flatheads on cut baits. 9 times out of 10 I'll cut a live bait to use for flatheads. It's more productive for me than live bait. Enjoy
It definitely works out that way lots of times man. Glad you're catching fish!
Wow! You responded to me!
You should offer some fried fish up. That might change their minds haha. Hope you keep catching them!
Best md catfish bait is carp
Thanks for the knowledge man! Big uglys are my fav's. I hope to get my pb this year.
I hope you do too man!
I'm the same, usually 2 live, one cut. The frogs would be interesting for sure. Hope you have a good year dude!
The fact you said ‘Ryan’s on his way’ then seconds later ‘the turtles are after me’, is hilarious after listening to the podcasts. 😂
I was hoping someone would catch that hahahahaha
do you have a video of the rigs that you use for the different types of water you fish in in. i have watched several of your videos and i noticed you use a multitude of different setups. love your vids
Rule number 3 is a must and I really appreciate the tips. Only problem I’ve had is catching shads I’ve never use a cast net before so do you have any tips on catching them with a Rod and what to use to catch them? Been dying to stock my live well with them
Rod and reel is tough for shad. If you can legally snag them, that's your best bet.
Another awesome video Spencer! I been killing the flat heads where I'm at on the river, at least two every trip!
Hell yeah man! Glad you're on em!
Best advice I have heard all day.
Haha hell yes
Stocked trout works amazing in Pennsylvania as cut bait. We cant use carp here in pa but are allowed using any legal size game fish cut small mouth works great for channles
Thanks for the tips, I am going to try oily fish from the seafood market today.
Fishing hasn't been good in Ohio yet.
Hope you got em man!
That big Flathead looks good on ya, Spencer!
Haha hope to accessorize one again soon
Good video bud definitely watch all your stuff and learn all I can
Hope they help man!
Man definitely great information I'm going to use the tips for sure thank you 👍🏾💪🏾♿
Hope you find a mondo dude!
Can’t wait to use some alewife for flatheads here in Michigan once we thaw out. Saginaw river here I come.
Hope you beat em up man!
I literally had no interest in flathead fishing until I watched you catch a few. I hear the James River in Richmond is a great flathead spot and I live close, so time to lay out a buffet
Good luck dude!
Luv ya little black box in the corner under the Duke. 👍🏻🇦🇺🇺🇸
Great video flat head is what I caught every weekends, grate tips for successful catches 👍💯
Thanks man. They're my favorite for sure. Hope you keep catching em!
Love the videos man I’m from Arizona and never caught one so thanks for the info definitely gonna use live and cut bait suck that’s the rod limit is 2 rods
Hope it helps dude! We get 3, but we have to buy a permit for the 3rd rod. I gladly do haha
@RiverCertified here in Pennsylvania I have the best luck on fresh cut bluegill for channel cat and flatheads
We always love seeing Ryan! Here frm Indiana!
He's very easy to tolerate haha
Oh boo goo 😢😢😢😢. I wish I had a boat to go. I would love to enjoy fishing every night or day. I’m retired/ disabled I have RA and Sarcoidosis.
Happy Fishing to y’all
Lol 😂 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🥲😂🤣😂
Sorry to hear that sir. Hopefully you get out as much as ya can.
@@RiverCertified love the videos. Keep on Fishen
Nc is Watching!!!!!
Hell yeah man. Glad you're getting out on the water and hope the fish keep biting for ya
@@RiverCertified probably gonna see what the night bite brings this weekend..all them tips in all your videos I pay attention to cause I ain't got a ton of time to be on the water cause I got a 40+ hour a week job plus I have the arrowhead huntin hobby to....some of your river banks look like prime time to me..good luck to ya brother
Hell yea the big uglys yay 😁!! Also got to see Ryan it’s been awhile since we have seen him!! Thank you so much for the tips!! I live in Texas so I’ll try it out for some big uglys we have some big ones down here!! Come on 100k subs keep it up 👍 this is the only thing I look forward to mondays !!
I'm ready to hopefully catch a few once it warms up more! I've heard Texas has giants man. Hope you find a couple. I appreciate all the support!
What a way to wake up Id take that alarm every day
My favorite alarm for sure
Ive been having a lot of luck on blues and flats using palm sized chunks of the belly meat with skin on from my smaller blues and channels. I caught 3 blues over 20 and a 43lber last week. I also had 3 stainless hooks snapped in half over a few days period with basic shore lines.
Thats kind of ironic. I was using blue cats for bait yesterday. Biggest was about 20ish
First off I could never get tired of fishing love your videos brother never really had an opportunity to fish for flatheads love too though I'd hate to leave this world without ever eating any that would be a waste of life as for the advice I've often been told to catch one you must use livee bait never believed it though its always a matter of being at the right place at the right time I hooked a monster alligator gar once fishing for catfish using chicken livers thought it was a huge turtle at first but when I pulled up on him he surfaced and I couldn't believe what I saw he had to be at least 6 foot long and 160 to 200 pounds funny thi g is he was only in water less than 3 foot of water once he realized he was hooked though he turned and pulled drag on that reel till that steel leader broke I was using 40 lb test line keep the lines tight and keep the video's comming enjoy your attention to details especially when you take people out with you and your catch and cooks ah the simple life
Man I couldn't imagine what a fish like that could pull like. Hope you get another shot at him! Glad ya dig the videos and catch and cooks!
Great video like always Spencer. It won’t be long and the Flatheads will be biting again.
Thanks Brad. I'm more than ready!
Good show man, you always have good info and catch nice fish. I have that exact same shirt, maybe I'll start wearing it fishing. ✌
Glad ya enjoyed it man!
Last year on deer season I used deer heart to catch my pb flathead. Probably going to use it this year again.
Thats interesting. Good luck dude!
I also saw your John Wayne picture!! The Duke was awesome
Gotta agree. I'm a big fan.
