Honestly, scenes like this are responsible for Nick fury just being one most bad ass characters I have ever seen.
Man enters the building after everyone believed him dead, stared down the guy who tried to have him killed and outsmarted the entire hydra net work.
And this man doesn’t even have super powers.
Nick doesn’t need a powers to show respect. When someone like him was the one who started the Avengers Initiative, then you know he’s a respectable man.

People think it's been undermined or what not, but honestly think about it. He DID trust the kitty. And cost him an eye. Nevermind the the damn cat could swallow the tesseract and open giant tentacle like mouth.
You gotta hand it to Fury the most renowned spy master in the world to create out of a veritable paper cut a story and lesson that are factually true. And use a Badass looking injury that was acquired in a goofy way and make himself look dangerous and more imponent and badass.
Somewhat undermined? Nah it is completely undermined.
@@lionsjourney29 It just seems like a waste of a potentially good backstory.
Like, imagine if we found out that Captain America ended up in the ice because he was going fishing and slipped and fell, instead of, y'know, sacrificing himself to prevent bombs from going off and missing a promised dance with his love interest.
The cat scratching plot twist was very funny, but I think the potential back story for Fury would've trumped any joke, no matter how funny it was.
It is entirely undermined by captain marvel.
Here's the secret, Fury got his eye scratched out by a cat.

C A T S
I love that Pierce's reaction to Fury being alive is a smile and half a laugh. Like, "I did kill the guy, but I should have known better than to think something so mundane would keep him out of my hair." And he isn't even terribly upset by this. If anything, he's glad that he gets to try and prove his moral stance is superior to his secret nemesis's. He would probably have been more upset if he never got a chance to have this conversation, so when he realizes that he does have that chance he's genuinely happy.
I agree. I probably think it's also a smile of respect, like "game respects game" type scenario. Pierce was so cunning he orchestrated a Hydra takeover from within shield, but Fury was just as clever by faking his death so that this moment could happen and Hydra could be taken down.

TheUmbrellaCorpX7[エヴ] Hyping something up and then playing it off as a joke because you can’t live up to the hype, which also takes away all credibility from the character, will always be bad writing in my book.

The way Nick says "You need to keep both eyes open" sounds deep cutting, like it was something Pierce said to Fury that has very personal meaning to both of them. "Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye". It really makes it sound like a very grim and messy story, a mission gone south, two friends trapped behind enemy lines, doing what has to be done to survive, even if it means leaving one another for dead. ,,You Need To Keep Both Eyes Open"
Fury: “Last time I trusted someone I lost an eye.”
Me: “Oh wow, I wonder what’s the story behind that. Was it a partner who betrayed him? Maybe it’s an awesome complicated conspiracy spy story where two best friends in an agency turned on each other because they’re forced to choose their own sides and is full of moral dilemma, with a compelling villain at that!”
Flerken: **Meow**
I once had a fantasy that it would be him and a partner who was posing as the enemy on a mission, but the partner didn’t cover their tracks properly and risked getting exposed. Fury knew this partner would only endure so much torture. So he blew his own cover and got captured to cover for them. However, the partner was then ordered by the enemy to either punish or torture Fury, thus losing him his eye. And for the sake of the mission, Fury endured it. Or better yet, Fury convinced the partner himself as a means of removing doubt from the enemy.
It would make him seem badass (or rather reinforce it). And it would feed into his motivations here in Winter Soldier- he feels he can’t fully trust someone with all the secrets because he had to endure unspeakable pain the last time it happened. It’s better to give people orders than intel in his book.
I’m no screenwriter, so I don’t know how well it’s work. The betrayal angle is probably better. But I still think my fan theory would’ve been better than a frickin flerken filleting.

He actually lost his eye to a cat
I’m done.
I mean, its not a cat, it is a flerken that looks like a cat.
Cuki still.... that little thing...
It ruined him. I wish it was a person he trusted instead of an alien cat

Amazing how deeply rooted the seed of Thanos' ideology was planted in the MCU! The Russos and the screenwriters Markus and Stephen definitely deserve an award for their genius contribution
Credit Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the writers. They deserve more of that.

This film stands alone.
lets make him loose his eye to a cat, that will be funny.

I mean, it was an alien hyperpredator capable of untold destruction and a terrifying appetite able to swallow an infinity stone without so much of a hint of discomfort... shaped like a cat.

@@tutumazibuko2510 I think they're complaining about how he lost his eye.
The only problem I have with the Goose reveal, is that Nick Fury didn't bring the Flerken with him in this movie.
Then again, retcons are a complicated profession.
Well for one it's stupid, and two Goose was an adult and cats like about 16 years.
