New subscriber and happy to see someone from the younger generation with a passion for the classics. I am a big fan of Polybius and would like to see you do more videos of him. I'd also be interested in your views of Lucian, if you have not already done videos of him, and some of the other Roman poets as well. And ignore the comments about clickbait thumbnails. It's your channel. Do whatever you want. The ancients certainly wouldn't care.
Polybius, a significant voice that we hear through fragments. Imagine all the people that are nothing more than dust. How much can we actually understand of the reality of those times? Always happy to see a new video. Cheers.
Oh yes, Oh yes, oh yes PLEASE more Polybius !!!!!!!!!! I will go and dig out my old copy of Histories !! I promise I will have read it cover to cover to go along with your talk !!! Oh what fun, can't wait !!~! Thanks Erica !!!
I've never read any Roman historians and I, overall, know very little about Rome (always been a Greece girlie), so I am very excited about this series!😊
Polybius and his story clearly inspire everyone! What a gorgeously relevant thumbnail-one begins to understand why Hypatia drew so very many admirers to her lectures. Clearly, the young men of Alexandria were extraordinarly dedicated to a deep examination of the many learned aspects of her brilliant system of philosophy.
interest in history- some overviews that feel so complete, and granular, but when one gets to the sources; there is so much missing, it is so fragmented that it's heartbreaking... could drive one mad, wondering what is actually missing. "obviously frustrating".
I was drawn to this video by the extraordinary appealing "click-bait" image... 🤩 (just joking... but!!!) Elas... that extraordinary insight of "educating his readers... and us" make it worth!!! 😘
Actually the Greeks taken back to Italy were hostages more than prisoners. They were all prominent men and were all "hosted" by equally prominent Roman families like the Aemilii Pauli. Even Livy (a Roman) used Polybius extensively. Very good presentation though.
Just getting into ancient writers. I read Gilgamesh, the Bible (years ago), and a few by Aeschylus. What do you recommend? I just started The Iliad (Robert Fagles translation), and also began your video series.
After quite a bit of discussion on here about the thumbnail, I've concluded that it was NOT clickbait. I think Erica is far too professional a historian for her to resort to clickbait. Erica's running a serious RUclips channel here, and is simply too classy to engage in clickbait. I thus declare the matter to be closed (unless Erica herself wants to disagree).
Let me tell you something about Polybius you might not know. A couple of weeks ago I’m at work, you know, at the factory, and I see Polybius out of the corner of my eye walking straight for me. “Good sir”, he says, you know how he talks all fancy when he wants something from you. “Good sir, could I please borrow 5 dollars for a lunch sandwich?” I says, “Polybius, don’t get so close to the machine there or it’s gonna rip your toga right off.” I was serious too, ‘cause I seen a guy get his toga ripped off a few years back. Anyway, he’s goin’ on about how he got in a fight with his old lady and she didn’t make him no sandwich for work today. I feel for the guy ‘cause he’s really old and skinny anyway so I says “Sure, I can loan you 5 bucks so long as you pay me back next payday.” You’d a thought I just told the guy he won the lotto or something ‘cause he gets this big smile then bows to me in that fancy way of his before snatching the money out of my hand. And guess what? That was three weeks ago and where’s my money? #don’tloanmoneytopolybius, #payup
Polybius was certainly taking notes on how the Romans whipped Perseus of Macedon while being a "guest" of the Roman State (whatever did Lycortas say?). Pretty detailed...a little too damn detailed about the Roman Manipular Army of the era. Polybius must have hoped that his countrymen would "take the hints" he was dropping and, well...they didn't. Philopoemen was nothing but dust at that point. Whatever the truth was...was ended in 146 BC with the destruction of Corinth by Mummius (Achaicus). Meanwhile Polybius basked in the glow of the erstwhile philhellene Romans of the Scipio Aemilianus circle surrounding him--maybe they did know, but they still admired the seemingly "cultured" Greek (from Arcadia of all places!). In the end, methinks he just gave up on his hopes of his people rising up and throwing off the Roman yoke, no matter how superior he though them to be.
If you would like to run experiment for historical purposes, you could take me prisoner no big deal im willing to go to any length for history. You taking me prisoner might be the best thing to ever happen to historical evidence. Lol. Being facetious has not been made illegal yet so there you have it. But I do like your videos
I wish I could express how beautiful and wonderful a sprite you are, I don’t think any language could do it justice. Like a flower scented breeze coming off the Wine Dark Dead…❤️🌹❤️ I like to be flowery with compliments.😁
Okay your point about the camera cuts is totally valid and I’m here to take anyone’s editing opinions on board … but my face expressing emotions is just my face 😂 Can’t do anything about that hahaha

I just wanted to give you a heads-up: It should be safe to go ahead and update your INSTAntaneous GRAMmar status to 22k... even though it's still at 21.9k... Excellent pronunciation of 'Megalopolis'! Very interesting, the story of Polybius.

Odds fish my dear fellow, what a splendid summary of the pecularies of the ancients! My, what little does time matter to the cultured, what?
Came for the clickbait, stayed for the content. Well played.

I discovered your channel this summer and love it. Waiting for the novel Medea so I may join your book club. Thanks for engaging my desire to learn.

I guess getting captured by Romans just makes you a better historian. It happened to Josephus, too.
I’m reading Polybius in Ancient Greek right now actually. Fun reading. I’m at the Spain adventures
Man of culture we meet again on this great thumbnail 👌

I recently read his 'The rise of the Roman Empire' and I would love to hear your thoughts on those fragments, if you ever get around to it.
A thirst trap for a video about ancient history, this is a first, I am going to be honest it worked.

Sometimes you do an exhaustive literature search and come up with nothing. And all you have to do is say inconclusive.
Yes please !
Polybius was the best Greek historoan, even if he was a Roman fanboy ;-)
Godbless...
Us greeks didnt loose to these romans
Us greeks thought these romans less competent at steeling therefore more competent at governing
