This is incorrect. Music only helps you get out of that trans. Will was never possessed when he was in the upside down. Him singing was probably just stupid because it would make the demogorgon find him easier. Him singing in real life wouldn’t stop vecna at all, it’s just when you’re possessed. If he were to face vecna in the upside down and start singing, it would do nothing 😅 it’s only to find your way out of your own mind, which again, he never needed
@@izza6923 They just meant it kept him sane. One of the reasons why he didn't lose his sanity and managed to held on. So yeah, in a way, it DID save his life. Technically? No. Mentally? Hell yeah probably.

I loved this scene it seemed like a symbolism for max’s trauma/depression she feels trapped and feels like there’s no escape and she has no one there for her except her inner demons but when the gate opens and she sees her friends it’s like her realising that the people who cared for her the most and loved her were the people she kept pushing away and so it’s like her running back to the people she feels safe with and the line come on darling is like a plea not only from her friends but from herself that she can make it and that she will be fine in the end CAN I ALSO JUST SAY AMAZING ACTING AND THIS WAS SO POWERFUL AND CINEMATICALLY BEAUTIFUL WITH THE SONG CHOICE AS WELL

I also love how the song ties back to Max and how she wishes she could've understood Billy better. Running Up that Hill is about someone wishing they could trade places with somebody else to understand them better
the “come on baby, come on darling” part gives me goosebumps everytime. it was like the song was talking to her.

at least now she's in the Oscars conversations for best supporting actress nomination for her role in Darren Aronofsky's new movie starring Brendan Fraser.
I don't think she'll get it because there are only 5 spots with a lot of amazing senior actors, but even being considered and up there as an option is pretty incredible, especially for someone her age.

for this year they ran both millie and sadie in the supporting actress category which was a mistake in my opinion because it ended up splitting the votes so none of them got it and the 8th spot went to sydney sweeney from euphoria instead
Lucas needs more love though. He's the only one of the kids who's socially aware. He tries to include his friends in his sport, inviting them to his games (I assume he invited them to every game). He keeps trying to be there for Max even if she's pushing him away. The boy is the heart of the group to me.
after rewatching the show a few times, I've come to realize Lucas is a top 3 character imo. I love that he didn't ditch his friends but instead tried to bring them into the popular crowd.
THANK YOUUU everyone sleeps on him or hates him for being blunt but he’s easily one of my favorites especially after season 4! He has such a great heart & really is a ROD for his friends

Agreed. I've always felt like Lucas was the heart of the show. He's a great guy who cares deeply for his friends and is still trying to be there for Max even as she continues to push him away. Lucas never gets the respect that he deserves
@@grace19005 Yeah. Mike has been all about Eleven. Ever since she entered the picture and their relationship developed, he splintered off from the group over time.
max's arc as a whole, but especially this episode, is so well written and portrayed. one of the best PTSD/ survivor's guilt/ depression/ s*icidal ideation metaphors i've seen.
such a powerful message too. the entire episode we see max putting on a facade, she still doesn't allow herself to be vulnerable in front of her friends, still doesn't want them to see how much she's actually in pain, always using her sarcasm as coping mechanism, but the truth is she pretty much gave up on life. she doesn't believe she can survive and part of her doesn't want to and doesn't deserve to live.
then, facing this extreme life or death situation with vecna, seeing her friends still being there for her, shouting her name and not giving up on her, remembering all the good memories she has with them, she realizes she doesn't really want to die, that she has things to live for, that no matter how much she pushes them away, her friends won't give up on her. and she decides to fight her inner (and literal) demons and run towards the light, towards the friends she's been running away from this entire time.
and i love how even though the music (which also, if you listen to the lyrics really resonated with max's headspace after the events of s3- "make a deal with god and get him to swap our places") opened the portal back to reality, even though her friends being there for her is what helped max, it wasn't simply enough to save her- max had to make that active choice to live and that active choice to run towards her friends and to fight her depression (vecna). and that's exactly what it's like in real life too. all the external help in the world won't be enough if you don't make that active choice to accept the help you're given, that active choice to fight. such a beautiful metaphor and message.
and btw since i remember you saying it last episode- billy was abusive towards max NOT because she got him "into trouble". idk how/why you came up with that yourselves. she only "got him into trouble" (as you call it) when they arrived to Hawkins. he's been abusive for years before that. because, just like bullies love to prey and take their anger on the "weak", he only felt superiority and strength when he was next to his little step sister. so he did to her what his dad makes him feel - he was possessive, aggressive and made her feel small and worthless because that's how his dad made him feel. and when he did that to max, he used to feel the "superiority" his father felt when he abused billy.

@@hh-ug4ki What I think people tend to not understand is that Max is being abused too. Often abusive parents pick a target, that's Billy. However Neil sets up Max as an outlet for Billy's anger with the way that he positions them in each others lives. Billy's getting bigger, getting more capable of fighting back, so instead Neil targets Billy's rage on Max by making him responsible for Max and ANY perceived mess up by Max is Billy's fault. Neil punishes Billy, Billy punishes Max, Neil remains top dog in the household.
Neil makes Max a prop in his campaign to tear Billy down. Max is neglected, emotionally terrorized, physically hurt by Billy, all at the orchestration of Neil.
Max is the family scapegoat.
I love how they were happy when max started seeing flashbacks, I was 100% sure her life was flashing before her eyes because she was dying. I was SOBBING while these guys were nodding positively like it was a good thing 🤣

One of the best episode of the whole show, the emotion behind that Max's "running up that hill" scene and the victor creel flashbacks truly makes this episode a masterpiece..
When you suffer from depression it's really hard to talk to people no matter how close you are. It's devastating as well and makes you feel even more like a failure.
Max's "I'm still here!" Has resonated with people across the world 🥺🥺🥺

I get why she might react that way especially since she's young and didn't have a great upbringing and toxic love (if you can call it that) from her "Papa", so i understand why she would be mad

at Davion 6:28 You do realise that the reason she didn't say "love El" is because Mike never says it himself. She has been writing "love" from the beginning tho, like when she was writing the letter to Mike in the first episode she ended it by saying "love El", but after the fight she didn't feel the need to write it anymore since he never does.
Max's moment running for her life was so literal... one of the things I realized early on in the series was that she had clear signs of depression, and that she hadn't been like most other characters, who just can move on, she said 'I tried to be happy', and vecna even threw in her face the times she wished she had died, regardless of the end of this character, she was legendary, and she wanted to live longer than anyone else I hope you remember that being alive is important, remember strength and happiness and love, and please never give up. Be brave like max. This scene goes beyond an "escape" is max se releasing, from depression, loss of will to stay alive, pain, trauma, loneliness, guilt, anxiety and etc... AMAZING! I'm Brazilian so it may be that the translation is a little wrong, but I hope you understand the message!🇧🇷🤜🏼🤛🏼

Yes!! One of my favourite episodes ever, in this episode the parallel they’ve been doing with depression this whole season is so clear and beautifully done. I love how her friends give her the tools and help her but ultimately she has to get out of there alone, she is the only one who can save herself. So so good.

That scene gives me chills and makes me SOB every time. Mental illness is horrible…and this is a damn good metaphor for what it feels like. Such a great episode. Also, the fact that Robert Englund made an appearance had me screaming lol love me some Freddy!
My favorite example of depression & suicidal ideation. I've been there. It sucked. I have a great family...but it's like you can't see your family your friends. But they are there for you when you need it.

It’s really representative of depression and the constant battle. If you rethink some major scenes with Max the whole situation is her downward spiral and guilt.
THE CHILLS!!! I LOVE SO MUCH THIS EPISODE, the memories bringing her back, lucas bringing her back, the tension, this episode had it all
mike is doing better than anyone in this show, he's always keeping his promises, he's always learning from his mistakes, he's always the first one to approach to ppl and start it a conversation, even when IS NOT his fault. He's such a good teenager boy

Max's whole arc was about survivor's guilt and trauma (she literally watched her ABUSER get brutally murdered and her whole life turned into shit because of it). She's a 14 year old girl dealing with a lot and she was an easy target for Vecna but she had an upper hand because she knows about the supernatural stuff. The last 10 minutes of the episode were a metaphor for depression, Max was clearly suicidal, depressed and suffering from PTSD (that's why she distanced herself from everyone and couldn't tell anyone how she felt because she didn't undertand how she felt either. She has trust issues and has trouble opening up to people as it is). Her escape from Vecna's lair was like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and realizing that she has people who love her and something to live for. If Max didn't become one of your favorite characters after this season and you still hate on her first, you're an awful person and second, idk what show you're watching. Also, pay attention to the lyrics from "Running Up That Hill", it says a lot about her mental state.
Nathan is a real one for being the only one rooting for Max. Sadie Sink is one of the best young actors on this show and should have gotten an Emmy nomination because she carried this season, her story isn't over.
Also, you guys need to take turns to speak, you have like 3 different conversations going on at the same time , lmao.

Billy didn't just save El he saved Max and all of his sisters friends. He was a hero. In the end he knew that if he didn't do anything Max and her friends might die and he couldn't let that happen. He chose to sacrifice himself after El got down to his Level of his own personal trauma of losing his mom. He was a Character dealing with personal trauma too
Ok yeah he was abused by his dad 😂 doesn’t make it right to be abusive towards others 😂 there is allot of people who are abused and don’t turn out to be a abusive and he was racist as well and racism is not ok so yeah he saved el in season 3 but one small good deed doesn’t erase all the bad deeds he has done previously so he died a bad person and a racist as well he was a good character but not a good person
Without doubt a real contender for best episode of any show of the last 10 years
That's why music makes sense because it triggers dopamine so it makes you feel happy or think of happy memories. Vecna doesn't want you to be happy he solely wants the people who deal with ptsd/trauma, survivor's guilt, or who are s*cidial. That's why he didn't take Max early on was because she was listening to music which also happens to be her favorite song.
What I love the most about this channel is the fans never give any spoilers even though we all probably finished the entire series

Hands down my favorite episode! I can’t imagine how much pain Max’s has had to endure with feeling responsible for Billy’s death, which wasn’t her fault. All of that depression and sadness can make you lose sight on the happy things in your life and she had almost nothing to be happy about and it just make her situation worse. Lucas Dustin and Steve do all they can to help her, but Max herself has to overcome her pain and fight her inner demons to live. She remembers that there are still people that care and that love her and it’s all she needed to fight off Vecna. It’s just a very beautiful episode and Sadie nailed it 👏
37:07 there actually is a scientific basis to this! music working the way it does in the show isn't just something that can be explained with "it's a supernatural show" (at least to a certain extent), because everything they said in the episode about its psychiatric uses is true. there's a whole branch of therapy called music therapy that I've written research papers about when I was studying psychology a few years back, with a special focus on depression and anxiety, and it's very interesting!
music therapy started becoming a thing in veteran hospitals after WWII when veterans with PTSD were discovered to be notably affected by music, so the hospitals ended up hiring musicians as full-time staff and it sort of evolved from there. music therapy can be used in a very wide range - ex. as a natural painkiller (both physical and mental, this has been used for thousands of years!), and it can even help patients with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. it's kind of an amazing, lesser-known therapy because there hasn't been as much research on it as other forms of therapy, and it's not as accessible, but it really has proven effective which is pretty cool
All the episodes this season are great. This one and the finale have to be my favorites. The Max scene with Vecna was super intense. Sadie deserved all the awards for that performance.

Robert sent in a tape! They didn’t ask him to, he submitted one all on his own free will to be apart of the show! So it worked out perfectly with the theme of the season

And Dustin(for me) is the best character. He is everything in this show! The smartest, the funniest and just the best! I feel every emotion he is going through! And I just can’t stand him in pain, but we all have bad times and it is inevitable. So I just love this dude. As well as Steve, Hop and the one and only Eddie!

The mind flayer was going for El, she was its traget, the whole reason It was in the mall. Billy breaking its control was revealed the moment it jumped in to save El, not a moment before, so there is no ”It knew billy broke the control and went for him” because even us the audience didn’t have a confirmation of that at that point. That’s not how storytelling works.
Mind flayer was about to finish El the same way it was about to do it before the while fireworks thing, but Billy brole the control and jumped in to save her. That was his ”redeeming” scene even though that doesn’t excuse everything he is done. If the Mind flayer went for Billy, that scene would literally lose all of that, all of its meaning.
I’m amazed it can even be interpreted in any other way really, giving that they literally switched the scene back and forth between the monster preparing the finishing strike -> El backing down scared(visually also showing who the Monster is looking at) -> shoots the tentacle -> El covers herself with her hands to prepare for the strike -> and then boom Billy grabs the tentacle.
Jesus, go watch the scene again lmao.

Mike does the gift of showing rather than telling to 11 as they say, actions are stronger than words because words are cheap and can just be told to anyone over and over and over again, but actually doing nice things for someone means that you really do care

This episode is so good! The Russia, California and Hawkins storylines were all super intense this episode. The whole shootout scene was a one shot which was super impressive! And of corse the ending with Max was amazing and very powerful.
I thought it was obvious that the Mindflayer was going after El. The whole purpose of it coming back was to kill eleven.. that’s the reason why they had that entire emotional moment for him in the finale of Season 3 so it could represent his “redemption” 😭
Sadie really acted tf out of that character. The song made so much sense. Max didn't want to live. In the song it says 'if I only could I'd make a deal with God and I'd get him to swap our places'.she wanted to bring Billy back and die instead. She felt like she didn't deserve to live. And in the upside down she understood that she actually wanted to live. Her running the song says 'running up that hill' and while in the song the person is running towards death, she's running towards life.

Max’s scene is such a strong one cause the battle was inside her mind all along, she fought against depression, against the urge to let trauma take over and let vecna win. At the bottom of it all she saw the reasons she has to be happy, to live, and she claimed it cause it’s her life, she has reasons to survive, so she grabbed it with all the pain and all the passion! it’s beautifully impactful and it’s the best scene of the season for me

I really don't understand why people hate mike so much they always bring up how he was rude to max during the second season but completely ignore that he was mourning El since he had given up hope that she was alive and saw max as someone trying to replace her. In the third season, both he AND lucas made fun of will but he apologized right away and was the only one that went after will to say sorry however no one got mad at lucas, and the whole thing with him saying will didn't like girls was pretty f*cked up but it was him simply being defensive after will called el dumb and even after he went to his house to apologize. They also say "why can't he say I love you to el he said it the third season" when he literally didn't. He was mad so it came out but he never actually said it to el even when they were at the mall he struggled to say it, that's normal for teenagers mainly the ones that grew up in a family that didn't say I love you often. I am not saying he is perfect or has to be everyone's favorite character its just dumb how people bring up ANYTHING to say he is the worst character. ok I'm done :)
He's definitely not the worst character, there are moments I really don't like him, but he does realize his shortcomings and makes up for it. As it stands now, he's somewhere in the middle in terms of the main characters

@@gladiscontreras376 I just feel like they've been stalling his character. Idk if that's just me but he was the heart of the party in seasons 1-2 and the past few seasons he just seems sidelined. I really want Mike and Will to take huge leaps next season, otherwise it just feels like character regression.

@@matthewsimonds3346 I was not satisfied with how they handle Mike these past two seasons cause he's supposed to be the lead and he's one of my fav character. But what I see later on is that they did it intentionally, they make Mike a realistic typical nerdy teenage boy who's growing up and have ups and downs, but his quality is still there. The actor himself admit that Mike is kinda passive for the last two seasons so I think it's intentional.

Best episode of the show. THAT SCENE was what put the song back in the charts! By the way DAVION, the actor who plays Max is Sadie Sink and this episode is by far the best thing she's done in her career. I've seen her in one other thing, but this made me want to watch everything she's done. Phenomenal!!!
When I watched it the first time I picked up on something in the flashback to Victor's family that made me realise something that I won't say because it's kind of a spoiler. But those who have seen the season would know what I'm talking about
This season as a whole was great but this episode was the peak. Such a great episode.

The only guy that seemed to feel this scene was in the white T-shirt. Everyone else either got caught up in their own comments or just didn't get the intensity of it all. The flashback was not something to rejoice in that was the closest thing to the flashback of your life before dying. Amazing writing acting and clearly one of the best TV scenes I've ever seen.

Max has been through so much trauma and now shes a target and Vecna is forcing her to relive that trauma. This is quite literally a Maxcentric Season. She finally gets to shine. Shes not just apart of the group helping them out with upside down and the Strange creatures but She's finally getting her epic moments. The fans have been waiting for Max to get her scenes. Now she has a whole Season devoted to her. Its sad that she has to go through this again and relive her trauma. Lucas and Dustin are her really god friends that want to help her with her depression. Lucas is hell bent on saving his girl. She needs to remember that she does havwe people who do care about her. She wrote goodby Letters to everyone but she hasn't been able to confess what shes been feeling instead shes been shutting herself off from the rest of the world and the people she loves. She feels guilt for what happened to Billy and shes traumatized from that moment of his death. Lucas is trying to show Max that she doesn't have to hide anymore from her pain. She has people in her life that can help her and of course her favorite song in Running Up That Hill by Faith Hill. That 1980s song became popular again because it played during all the critical moments on Stranger Things. So this show made it #1 on the charts in the future. And the Singer is thrilled of how they expressed her song on the show. Shes grateful.
