I am no longer part of the "cult of wash n go styling". Meaning, I do what works for me. I have seen people attacked in comment sections when they described how they do their wash n go styling. Attacked for saying, "I use water to refresh my hair". Wild. I have a similar style to Brittany Mia and I find your content some of the most relatable on natural hair styling. Because I watched the video on using bands in my hair, I feel so much better about my style. It lasts longer, less tangled, and looks better than me only wearing a bonnet or scarf. Way better! I also do not need stiff definition. I love my hair to be big, fluffy, while showing some texture, some frizz. It does not need to be extremely defined for me to love my style. I have refreshed my bangs and some sections with a bit of water and a bit more product and I no longer feel like I'm doing something "wrong" by not starting all over again with a wash. I have added leave-ins, I have added more treatments, I have dropped all of the products recommended by certain professionals because my hair was not doing well at all. I constantly felt like something was wrong with my styling or my hair and my hair was extremely dry, or very difficult to get product through. Now, my stylists always comments on how soft my hair feels and asks me what I use. It's so much healthier now. My problem areas are growing in nicely, less breakage and split ends (and I have always gotten regular trims!). With the change up I can actually detangle my hair in the shower, just with water before I add my shampoo and conditioner. By that time, detangling is a breeze. I truly LOVE my hair even more now that I am doing what feels right for me. My new favourite products are Pattern Beauty leave-in, custard, with a bit of firm hold gel (I still get a soft hold with that combo but my hair feels so incredibly good!), also using the treatment from the brand, and the thick conditioner. Chef's Kiss! The scents can be pretty strong but I feel like I am getting used to them Thank you so much for your page, Mia. Your channel has truly allowed me to feel more liberated in this style. That was the entire point of me switching to wash n go styling but the cult vibes of some professionals had me feeling trapped and like everything going wrong was my fault. Looking forward to seeing how your journey unfolds. Also, shout out to @shellyv and @JennJackson - also very relatable content and liberated in their hair styling.
Hair journeys are never ending in my experience. There's always something we can learn about our hair whether we've been doing it for a month or 5 decades.
You can definitely grow long hair with just wash n go’s. The key is to keep up on your hair trims. I make sure every 3 months I’m getting my hair trimmed on blown out hair. I’m about 4 inches or so from reaching my bottom. I can also say the longer my hair got the more I would have to switch up my routine.
Yup a silk press will expose it all, cuz the hair can’t hide its damage at alllll. Really enjoyed this video, can’t wait for the next. Glad you’re figuring things out! A little spritz of water has been very helpful for my detangling too
I have fine strands that love to shrink and curl up on each other, so damp/dry detangling outside the shower was my go-to for years. The night before wash day, I'd grab a slippery leave-in or oil, put on some anime, and take my time going through my hair. It wasn't necessarily faster than in-shower detangling, but the process was infinitely more pleasant. The tangles were easier to get through, I had less breakage, and I could have my hair washed and styled in chunky twists in 45 minutes (when I didn't deep condition). I stopped because I was tired of twists outs and wanted to experiment with wash and gos. You were/are a huge inspiration btw. ☺ And I saw video after video of girls detangling in the shower and thought that was the ideal. I had this delusion that I'd be able to hop in the shower, shampoo, condition, detangle, and style in an hour. That only caused resentment and rushing which caused breakage and split ends. Rather than forcing my hair to be something it's not, I'm learning to accept that my strands are delicate and need extra TLC. So, I'll be returning to anime and detangle and washing my hair in twists.
I’m realizing this too….splitting my hair in sections with clips. Water in a bottle, slippery conditioner and oil….out the shower…and then rinse and shampoo is way better than standing in the shower.
I love a good switch up/hair experiment. 😊 my own switch up recently was I went back to finger detangling with only an occasional comb or brush. I feel like we just have our different seasons, nothing wrong with that!
This past January marked my 2nd year going natural. I had to Pivot from detangling with any form of tool to finger detangling only when I began to experience measurable growth. It seems to me that the longer my the strands get…..the more pivoting I have had to do to manage my hair bec hair growth/retention makes a big difference. My best pivot so far has been discovering Ayurvedic herbs! Flaxseed Gel, Green Tea and Aloe Vera Juice rinses, Amla glosses, Fenugreek Paste and DIY scalp massage oil have really been game changing for me!! Being willing to Pivot is key!!! Can’t wait to see your silk press!!!!! 😍
I love this. I also dry detangle with oil currently. I wear twists during the winter. I'm going to try this method when I go back to my summer wash and goes.
I find myself also ready to switch things up after doing wash and go's 90% of the time in the past 2 years. Our hair journey shouldn't have to be static.
I also enjoy dry detangling with a silicone oil the night before shampooing. It makes wash "day" so much easier. ETA: I don't do as much sections, but I might do more after seeing this video and maybe consider spraying my hair a bit so it gets damp.
Loving this journey you're on! I'll be natural for 5 yrs this July. Only a wash n go girly. I don't use as much creams, leave ins and mousses because I am a gel only only, oil on scalp wng queen. Change is good. As my hair is now bsl, it makes me want to explore all that I can with my hair. I know you'll help inspire me to do so.
A great and affordable pre-poo that i love and believe you may like too is the African Pride Aloe & Coconut Water Pre-Shampoo. It has a lot of slip which makes it super is to detangle and minimize breakage ❤
I went out and purchased the fable&Mane pre shampoo oil after you mentioned it. Honestly I much prefer how my hair looks and feels the OGX coconut oil as a pre shampoo oil and it’s also Wasaaay Cheaper.
i literally JUST finished your recent video right before this, and was so intrigued by this exact oil u mentioned. i must’ve eyed their products a while back bc apparently im on their mailing list😂 but any who this video came just in timeeeee! i literally couldnt find anyyyy good demo-review videos from people i trust using this product😭
Maybe try damp detangling instead of doing it on dry hair to save some time. and the day you shampoo your hair, try and use a clay wash or clay mask like the Innersense detox mask or the Trepadora clay mask outside the shower and work it through. I am finding that using a shampoo that keeps my hair detangled simplifies my detangling while I’m in the shower and doesn’t cause my hair to get tangled again during the shampoo process. I’ll follow that shampoo up with a sudsing shampoo one time in the shower and it’s literally cut my detangling time drastically. I’m learning that the key for me is to keep your hair detangled for pretty much the entire process. I hope this helps ❤️
Love your videos! You mention that your hair has split ends and along the hair shaft. You take such great care of your hair I just don’t know what’s causing all this hair shaft splitting. Some thinks it’s because we keep are hair in it’s natural curly to much and this causing a lot of tangles and breakage. Just wanted to your thoughts.
At this point, I believe that is the issue. For myself, my ends and my hair in general are so fragile that leaving them out in the elements to shrink and coil back up on themselves really does take a toll. ESPECIALLY since I don’t like crunchy hard holding casts that keep the hair from frizzing. I luh da frizz. The bond builders were working but frankly they were working hard at just hiding the damage reeeeeally well. You can’t mend splits forever. I don’t believe any treatment can mend splitting, and it just needs to be cut off. I do believe I would’ve had a lot more damage UP the hair shaft had I not been using the bond builders. For me it’s obvious that a lot of the damage was due to manipulation because my hair was damaged about half way up my hair shaft, and the remainder of my hair was fine. This is the section of hair that is hardest for me to detangle but I thought that was normal since it’s just been that way for years and I was still retaining good length that didn’t appear to be damaged. Nope. It was damaged and since I’d gotten used to it and the treatments were hiding it, it never occurred to me that it could be keyhole splits and other forms of splitting that the treatments were hiding. Afro textured hair is literally the weakest hair there is and that’s a scientific fact. Even folks with straighter, stronger hair do oil treatments and put their hair in braids (I’m referencing Indian culture) to keep their hair protected so they can maintain health and length. So, while I think many of us can and have grown our hair in wash and go’s successfully without the damage I’m experiencing, I truly believe that it’s more advantageous and easier to maintain healthy length by keeping the hair protected for majority of the time and wearing wash and gos less frequently.
@@BrittanyMia absolutely right on the nail! I love your videos and will continue to see how your hair journey goes. I know you will figure it out!😊 I Just don’t want to cut and repeat without knowing what’s the cause is and get a routine that will keep hair healthy!
I just learned it’s the shampooing. It dries the hair out. I’m just realizing we need to use traditional shampoos as needed to remove buildup. It should also only be applied on the scalp for shampooing. I just purchased a no suds shampoo for my weekly wash . I just started this new method. We’ll see if it solves the issue.
@@juanitarobertson306 sure! It’s called NYC Curls. I like it so far. Definitely an adjustment from thinking you need suds shampoo all the time. Just have to be mindful of product build up. So use regular shampoo or a clarifier when needed. I heard Hair Rules is good It’s just more expensive.
I watch a licensed cosmotologist who absolutely swears by dry detangling with oil. I've tried it before and it's wonderful. The only problem is that when I'm doing a wash n go(which is still my go-to style), I can't really manage it with all that dried gel. 😅😅
I agree! I think not using oils, butters, deep conditioners, and leave in conditioners exacerbate the damage expeditiously. However, I think that for some of us (not all) it’s really counterintuitive to continue growing our hair out in strictly the wash n go style after a certain length. I know for myself, my strands are fine and cannot handle the kind of manipulation I was putting them through in order to achieve my preferred wash and go style. I began to realize that I was struggling with detangling. Simply put, it’s too much wear and tear to be a wash and go natural for me. However, I still will wear wash and go’s just not as frequently.
Is there anything that you did to prep your hair before your silk press to prevent heat damage? Do you know what temperature your stylist used for the press? Thank you !
