CARMEN Bizet - OPERNHAUS ZÜRICH

- Among Seville’s cigar makers, Carmen is the most attractive woman around. Arrested for the assault of a friend, she enthrals the brigadier Don José who lets her escape. For her, José abandons his childhood sweetheart, he gives up his rank, deserts the army… and to what ends will passion drive him when he loses Carmen's love to the glamorous bullfighter Escamillo?
The first Parisian audiences at the Opéra Comique in 1875 were shocked to see the incarnation of such an independent heroine. Today, Carmen is the French opera that is most performed around the globe. Magnificently recreated by Bizet, this a searing depiction of a woman who craves love but creates obsession and jealousy. After Bizet’s sudden death in the same year as the premiere, Carmen won the hearts of audiences in Vienna, Brussels, Saint-Petersburg, New York… and only triumphed in Paris in 1883. OperaVision is live in Zurich for its first ever stream from its famous Opernhaus in a production by Andreas Homoki first staged at Opéra Comique earlier this season and here conducted by Gianandrea Noseda.

Great production, thank you operavision. Danke Opernhaus
Zürich :)
Adored the singings & Noseda's conducting + orchestra players' excellences. French pronunciation by the top singers, beautiful. Musicianship abounds here 💎
Dziękuję💗
Musically a great production, but the total lack of 'mise en scene' is a serious drawback. The performers did an excellent job both musically and as actors, but it is a shame that nothing in the staging supported their efforts. Conclusion: they could not have done better with what they had to work with.
Thank you for uploading this passionate and powerful performance.
What a breath of fresh air this production was! Using the curtain to block off the characters and using it as a transition. Genius! Having the chorus first dressed in nineteenth century dress and then in the forth act modern day was quite clever. The bandits in 1930's style with Carmen in a leather full length coat was unexpected. The transition from the 3rd act to the 4th and watching Don Jose's spiral into madness with Micaëla in complete confusion was so powerful! I must say that Saimir Pirgu's performance was so very intense! His was the best and most believable performance of Don Jose to date. The whole cast, chorus, and children's chorus was 110%! The direction by Andreas Homoki was magnificent as was the conductor, Gianandrea Noseda. I've seen a few productions of Carmen and this one is by far the best. Thanks OperaVision for bringing it to us!
Магія !!! Дякую!!!
The blackout at the start of the video scared me, I thought I lost power
Fantásrico!!!!!!!!
Great opera performance/production!
@OperaVision: Just some technical comments...
- There are some rather long interruptions/gaps (i.e. periods of complete silence and black screen) of approx. 10 seconds, each, in the video stream as well as in audio stream (approx. times: between 2:13:45 and 2:13:55, between 2:37:20 and 2:37:30, between 2:59:12 and 2:59:21, between 3:48:22 and 3:48:31, and maybe also at other places).
- Contrary to the "More info" text, there are no subtitles in French and German available. The subtitles of the opera in English are not shown in the first part of Act 1, they are only shown after 1:38:42.
- Question: Can these issues still be corrected? Thank you!
in this opera house i spent once nearly 7'000 euros in one single season ... this carmen is free ... and i have home cinema with a large screen ...
Thank you. This was blocked until today due to a copywright claim.
The music is great, as always - the staging is atrocious. This thing is chock full of gimmicks, just gimmicks. I came to see Spain and I saw a moonscape.
A tribute to Victoria de los Angeles💐🌿

Is it just me, or is this video for some reason blocked in the US?
Yes, it is DEFINITELY blocked in the US, on copyright grounds it says. Can you do something about that?
@@happydeathman unblocked today
@@sixeses Thank you!
I agree with those who enjoyed the performance - some great singing indeed - but found the production lacking. I was oarticularly disappointed as Homoki directed two of the best and most beautiful productions I have ever seen - or been in. Here the 4th act was indistinguishable from Bieito's version and really the whole production could be called semi-staged. How strange.
Very good singing and conducting, and Marina Viotti is an earthy, likeable Carmen - but the staging feels rather bare and limited. As many people pointed out in the chat, the prominent curtain and the lack of real scenpgraphy make the stage feel shut-in and not very evocative of a bustling Spanish city or a gypsy camp.
Eine konzertante Aufführung... gut gesungen, schaugespielt, mit Kostümen... aber als Inszenierung... der Vorhang... schade...
why the choir is dressed like they are at the first rehersal? 🤦♀
I miss the stage... no real production...
