    Hi Lyra! The word ‘Oprostite’ is also like “polite” version of ‘Oprosti’. Like if you say it to a random man/woman you don’t know or to elderly. ‘Oprosti’ is more like when you say it to a friend, family, somebody you know a long time - you grew up together or if you know them from your town your entire life,etc.
    The other word that means the same is ‘Se opravičujem’!
    Keep up the good work!

    Thanks so much for this! It helps to have someone with a similar accent demonstrate pronunciation. I'd imagine that like most major cities you can squeeze by with just English in Ljubljana, but I want to at least make an effort to be respectful.

    No problem we also speak english so no need to try to learn this hard language. We are small country and all we need to addopt to speak the common language which is english. But anyway im proud of you to be one of milion which try to understand our language and even post it.

      It seems like most folks around Ljubljana speak English, sure. Where I live most folks don't, it's mostly only café and retail workers who do here. I haven't met anyone older than 50's (especially outside of a business environment) who speaks English.

    Pozdrav Lyra , jaz sem iz Cipra , super video , Hope to see more of you, it's hard to find videos about the Slovenian language , i am currently learning the Slovenian language through private lessons and i am hooked, fell in love with the language i love how slang it is. If you could make a video of a few more advanced phrases that native speakers use that would be awesome!

      Tony Panayiotou it is a wonderful country for sure. I will get into my background in another video soon, but I moved here to be with my husband who is a Slovenian national. It honestly wasn't on my radar until I met him, but once I did and starting learning so much about it I've completely fallen in love. I hope to stay here forever and post videos the whole way! :)

    Interesting that you said 'adijo' is similar to [the French] 'adieu' or [the Spanish] 'adios' but you did not mention the Italian 'addio'... very likely the real origin of the Slovenian 'adijo' [which btw ultimately derives from the Latin 'a deus', like all other examples, including Portuguese 'adeus'].

    Vala is actually a word, at least in my dialect, and it means 'valley'. The standard slovene world would be 'dolina'.
    'Vala' is also a genitive form of the world 'val' which means a wave.

    Hello Lyra! This was such an incredibly helpful video, thank you! I feel much more confident in my pronunciation of Slovenian words now! My husband and I will be travelling to Bled later on in the year. He is a Coeliac, which means he cannot have any gluten whatsoever. Do you happen to know what "gluten free" would be in Slovenian? Thank you! :)

    • @LyraMadrona
      @LyraMadrona  6 лет назад +2

      Imogen Moore brez glutena! 😄 it's strange, I was GF in the states but here I don't have the symptoms. I wasn't Celiac though, I just got gnarly migraines and brain fog. I'm going to do a video soon about my experience of US versus European gluten!

    • @ImogenNegomi
      @ImogenNegomi 6 лет назад +1

      Thank you so much for your reply - we are very grateful! Unfortunately, even the tiniest bit makes him ill and can do damage :( So that will be a very helpful phrase to know! How interesting! Maybe gluten is more processed in the States and that's what was causing issues? I look forward to that video coming out! Thank you again :) xx

    • @LyraMadrona
      @LyraMadrona  6 лет назад +1

      Imogen Moore no problem at all! A friend of mine is Celiac and when she visited the Netherlands she could eat it too. If I'm honest, I think the primary cause is all the glyphosate and other poisons the states uses that are banned in most of Europe. Such a long discussion though, there's a lot to unpack! I hope you have a wonderful time in Bled!! 💜

      I didn't realize it was more regional, because that's one of the first things you're taught in every book or PDF I have. I was told at one point that people from Celje have the most grammatically-correct dialect in Slovenia, too, so I guess it's not a bad thing. :p

    • @timorii
      @timorii 6 лет назад +3

      "Zdravo - beseda se povezuje z vzhodno Slovenijo in socialističnimi časi, dejansko je zelo stara: ekvivalent rimskega ave, recimo v Ave Maria, ki se v slovenščino prevaja kot zdrava Marija ali pozdravljena Marija (nenazadnje je koren tudi v besedi pozdraviti)" source: razvezanijezik.org/?page=pozdravi

    • @timorii
      @timorii 6 лет назад +4

      I think the word "zdravo" was popularized in socialism after the WWII, superseding the old greeting "bogdaj". Now it's mostly elderly people using it and for some reason the whole eastern part of Slovenia. I come from the west and the most common word is živjo. I can imagine using myself Zdravo in a more formal setting though.
