Gotta say Mat, apart from the bad news with the diff, this is becoming my favourite build, mainly because it’s being kept ‘near’ original and not messed about with.
Have you tried coding the key? Replace the battery. Put it in the ignition, turn the key on and off so the dash lights come on 5 times, then take the key out, hold the unlock button and press the lock button at the same time and your key will then be coded to the car. Worth a try 🤷🏼♂️
Yeah was thinking the same, of the key has been knackered for a while then it won't activate the coded control unit. Try the key and will be easier and cheaper to test than new control unit.
I had to do this with a blank key from Amazon as replacing the battery didn't work for me. Also the physical mechanism (where you put the key into the door) has a rebuild kit. Have done this twice since it is hot where I live and the spring just fails in them.
Personally I would take the diff out and strip it, might be the bearings for the diff rather than the helical gears. If it is the bearings and you change them and if there is too much backlash I would just swap the diff for a Wavetrac or Quaife LSD, the wavetrac is the better diff, has a cam inside it to help with loading on the free wheeling side of the diff. But before you do any of that take the drive shafts and prop shaft off and rock the diff back and forth to double check it is coming from the diff.
Unlike a lot of car RUclipsrs who dedicate whole episodes to just doing one thing on the car, it makes me so happy that you get loads done in a video. I don't know if other people feel the same but if a build series has loads and loads of videos on it I kinda get abit bored of it, great stuff matt Keep it up mate
I always prefer watching a more productive video. A lot of people ask for more videos which is easily done if I break it up into smaller episodes but I think bigger episodes makes better content
its refreshing to know I'm not the only one who has bad luck with cars!! 13.45 I genuinely felt your pain Matt!! Then the diff as well - oh man!! But your strength of character is amazing. As always your positivity will get you through just like with the Lamborghini in Spain!! Loving this build this is by far the BEST car you have done!
That is one of your best projects if not the best. Everyone can wrap a car or put in an hydraulic suspension but this is real craftsmanship!! Well done so far Mat!!
What I love about Mat and this excellent channel is that Mat doesn’t know what he’s doing but he does know what he’s doing at the same time..and that’s exactly how I am. I watch a lot RUclips videos on a certain job that I need to do on my car, then that gives me the confidence to tackle the job myself. Sod paying some garage hundreds of £’s to do it. I think Mat has given so many of us the inclination to ‘have a go’ ourselves.
Try doing some figure of 8’s in that car park to get the oil going round the diff, I had the same problem. If not I ended up getting an exchange diff with a slightly higher ratio to improve low down torque. Good luck, love the channel 👊🏻👍🏻
Always check to make sure the job is finished and everything works properly before putting everything back together. It saves a lot of time and hassle doing those checks before buttoning everything back up.
Stay strong the M Starts to Look so good and you did a good Job again ! It's an older car and it was used hard . Give him Love and you will have a Long Time fun and joy with it.
I've been jumping between wanting a scorpion exhaust and a Megan racing exhaust on my car, but hearing the scorpion it's a proper bit of kit. You might have just persuaded me. Also The noise from the differential noise is common. If you've just changed the oil you need to do a figure of 8 on full lock to allow the oil to get in the clutch plates inside the differential. Also being the car has stood still for a while could also have something to do with it aswell. Clutch plates could have dried out. If that doesn't sort the problem then I'm afraid a diff rebuild is probably the best best. Could do a 4.10 drive ratio swap while in there. Hope this helps matt!! Loving the e46 videos
Loving the series! Who would love to see an hour long video or 40 mins etc? That would be dope! Please try doing a longer video Mat and love the content as always
14:29 Mat the e46 doesnt lock from the inside when doors are open it bascailly telling you that your door is open, thats why it didnt lock when your pressed the button it only locks with the key if the doors are open.
Mat Armstrong I had similar issue with my BMW E46 320D, I could not open with keys after pressing button, it only worked rarely. It turned out to be some electrical relay issue, guy who was doing it said it looked like relay got stuck between switching circuits and stayed in one position. But it does not have to work for you, just my experience.
Iv had the same issue in the past with the central locking on e46s there's a sequence you have to do with the key in the ignition to resink it to the module. There's plenty of tutorials on RUclips 👍🏻
Try going to the rear of the car and point the key at the rear window, I had the same problem with my key and central locking. There’s a video on RUclips that shows you that you have to press the button a few times or something for it to work. Mines started working instantly
mine did the same on the diff after 5 years off the road. You need to put the friction modifier in the diff and it completely fixes it after 500 miles.
Hi Matt you should also check the fuses in glovebox if I remember correctly there should be 3 fuses for the central locking/alarm, there should be a white plastic diagram sheet to help find the fuses, the 5amp fuse is the most common one to blow hope this helps
This car with this color its my wet dream... Im so jealous of it not gonna lie. This car will definetely give back in joyrides when you finish it. Keep it up with this amazing job. Cheers mate, I love what you are doing.
Hey Mat have you tried to sync the key/key fob with the car. Usually when you change the battery of the remote you have to do that. I just found some instructions on google not sure if it applies to your bmw but it did work on my x3. If it doesnt you can always google for your specific car Insert the key into the ignition and turn it rapidly to position 1 and back. ... Remove the key from the ignition. While holding down the unlock button, press the BMW logo 3 times. Release the unlock button. To complete the BMW key programming process, turn on the ignition.
I’m loving this project! Mat you said it came with a spare key, did you try the buttons one too? Often the spare is better than the main one when worn out! Please stick a Wavetrac LSD on there 🙏🏼👀
Hi Matt check your gm5 module behind the glovebox if yours is a later module it wil say (star12) on the module, and these very rarely go wrong they can be swapped like for like same part numbers if is playing up,also check your fzv anttena which is behind the panel on n/s c pillar it's the grey box plenty on eBay doesn't need to be the same part numbers, hope this helps. All the best!
Loving the videos Matt. Just got made redundant and I have two young kids and it’s going to be a struggle this Christmas but your videos make everything a bit better
Keep up the great work brotha! You have such a great attitude and outlook on everything...esp when you discover/handed the bad news and problems with all your builds...its a breath of fresh air and motivating to all who watch!
I'm lovin your channel, totally positive vibes, even when things go wrong, like you say, you enjoy what you do. I repaired a couple of cars (RS México) yeah, long time ago, one step forward three back fun.
Mat I had an E46 and when you put the key in it wouldn't lock/unlock the door - On ebay they sell kits which fix this there is a piece in the lock that is made of a weak metal and break when you turn the key - I was forever changing mine (its a bit of a pain). Someone may already have suggested this - Type in on ebay " BMW e46 door lock repair kit" but remember the kit is "handed" I hope this helps best wishes Clay.
You should try programing the key first through a diagnostic tool. Some old gen German cars don't sync when you put the key in the ignition. Try also to put the key into the ignition with all the windows and doors closed, Ignition in accessory mode (1st position), then get the key out and hold the unlock button while pressing the middle button 3 times and the key should sync if the remote is still good. If that doesn't work get a diagnostic tool and check if the signal from the key reaches the car. Also, does the Safe LED on the driver side turns on when the car is locked ?
I'm sure there s a step guide if u you key in ignition and hold unlucky while it's in ignition somthing like that also the key charges from the ignition barrel and you need to recode the key once you take battery out had same issue with my e46 m3
Hi Mat had the same problem, footwell control module as you are aware what it controls my’n was just the n.s.f light. Looked all over for one but there are three different ones. Cut a long story short had to go to BMW. £650 and it had to be programmed. On the up side they did valet it for me free. 🤣😂
just did this. Ignition on off 3 times, key out, hold unlock, at same time press lock 3 times, then release all buttons, car locks and unlocks. And is now workin perfect, strange there you go buddy
Door lock is probably the shaft broke in the barrel, quick and easy fix, from the looks of the key there’s no resistance, common issue on e46. (Doubt it’s the body computer relays) The diff issue is probably the clutches, much cheaper to fix than a new diff.. bit of a mission though but possible.
mama mia Mat i want to get the same exact car and work on it myself, watching you do all these repairs has just made me love the car even more! the only drawback i have about the car is it being a M3 which means the fuel consumption isn't gonna be the best! if i can find it for a reasonable price i will for sure get it
As the saying goes; If you can't afford it new, you can't afford it used. These cars are over £15k again for anything even halfway decent. But you'd need well over 15k to spare just so you can afford the running costs and maintenance costs.
Great Car Mat, yeah try resyncing the key, shame about the diff, are you sure it's not a rear wheel bearing issue ?, Looking forward to the next vid, well done
Have a bit of a soft spot for a laguna 46, good find and well worth a save! Csl bootlid and front bumper would look the nuts! Sounding a bit under the weather Matt?
I hope you took the time to have the welder drill a hole at the beginning & end of each crack to release the stress on the metal.... IF you don't you push the risk of it cracking again if it hits a good enough bump in the road or a pothole... I ALWAYS drill out both ends of a crack then spot fill them in then finish full welding of the crack... Then weld in, (AFTER THAT) any strengthening plates and gussets... Just the opinion of a professional collision repairman
Enjoying the updates! Diff is definitely past it's best. Time for a diff rebuild. I used Heasman Differentials 😁 cured all my remaining rear clunking issues/noise for sure!
3.8k likes and no dislikes ,, just goes to show how much of a favourite this car is ,, Keep at it pal ,, I’d like to see more under car cleaning before bolting things back together but I also under stand things take time 👍.
Looking good mate, my e46 key doesn’t work on the remote either.. you can try and reset the frequency in the key few vids on here for it. I’d check the bearings in that Diff!
My 1 pet hate about any M3/4 is the raspiness of the exhaust system, but that scorpion system sounds nice!, I’ve got an E46 330 m sport, even with that I had the stock exhaust modified, middle box deleted and the rear box changed for a smaller 1, sounds way better…..
Try recoding the key, doesn’t need a computer and is fairly simple to do, failing that as you said the gm5 module can be problematic but you normally get a fault code in the module for locking and unlocking relay
Good work as always Matt, been watching all the videos as of late always a pleasure to watch and gives me the motivation to work on my own motor. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Love it bud I’ve got one I’ve had mine for 16 years and my diff has not done the clonking but on full lock you can feel the lsd from when I first got it and that was with only 30k on the clock so that’s no worries 👊🏻👌🏻❤️
Matt when you fitted the door actuator did you make sure the bar between the key barrel and the actuator when into the star shape slots in the back of the actuator? There is also a initialisation procedure for the remote key Great channel, always enjoy
Replacement Diff, bad times. But otherwise you are getting there. As you say, the highs and lows of old cars. This car is worth the OEM restore though. Top viewing as always.
Have you tried reprogramming the key from the ignition barrel? There's a sequence you go through then click certain buttons on the fob. My remote battery died then after cutting open the key to replace it had lost its memory. Once I did the sequence it sorted it... Also the sensor for the remote is in the roof I believe check that too??
I recently bought a 2002 e46 320i that had been standing for 9 years, it has a similar issue with the locking, I fist tried key cycling, this didn't work. I landed up having to replace the battery in the key and have both the key and ews reprogrammed as the vehicle had been off from power for so long with a dead battery. I also has a similar knocking sound but from the front and only when the vehicle turned either to the left or right, it turned out to be bad control arm bushings, sadly yours definitely seems to be a bad diff. Hope you come ight soon.
E46 keys are notoriously a nightmare. From them not charging properly to the chips not reading properly with the anti theft system. I had loads of issues, had ridiculous quotes from auto locksmiths to fix the problem. In the end I went direct to BMW, gave them my reg, about £140. A day later I had a brand new key that worked straight away and never had a problem again. Can also get the small plastic valet key for about £30/40
Check the rear driveshafts i had the same noise on my x5 changed rear diff for a brand new one from dealers and still had the same noise turned out to be the driveshaft clicking
Love the effort. I'd rebuild the diff with a 3.91 or 4.1 cwp will make the car feel so different. Might not be in the spirit of the channel but you can get them on exchange. The groaning and knocking is no doubt glazed/worn clutch plates and back lash. Big cardinal sin is waxyoil nasty nasty stuff.
Another great amount of work done on the latest episode of the E46 M3! 👍This build is proving to be very interesting as it covers a range of issues that us home mechanics might face when working on older cars. Bad news about the diff, but not that surprising considering the car has been tracked. Perhaps you should check all the drive train components for wear/ worn components. Keep up the great work!😊
Loving this build, reminds me of the days of the Audi TT. Current i own a BMW F30 Series and had a E92 also but would love to own a E36. Please but this up for raffle! I would buy the lot!!
Had a 2002 merc where the key fob didn't work and had a really poor radio reception, turned out it was the antenna which was mounted under the plastics on the rear window. Could be a similar issue with the m3. Good luck
hey mat, good job doing this car right, you should look into the GM5 module, they often go wrong and can be sent out and rebuilt for only $100 US. That should fix your issue with the locking!
U need to program the key insert key turn to ignition 1 pull out hold lock up Button then press lock Button 3 Times while still holding lock upp Button.
Great series Matt! Had the same issue with locking system, turned out to be the barrel! Bought a rebuild key off ebay (about 5 pounds) and it fixed it! Good luck with the rest
Gotta say Mat, apart from the bad news with the diff, this is becoming my favourite build, mainly because it’s being kept ‘near’ original and not messed about with.
Loving the series, look forward to the new episodes every week 👌 such a genuine person and keep it fresh every week. Better than any TV you can watch.
For real. Just a guy living his dream on a website. So happy for Mat
Have you tried coding the key? Replace the battery. Put it in the ignition, turn the key on and off so the dash lights come on 5 times, then take the key out, hold the unlock button and press the lock button at the same time and your key will then be coded to the car.

Yeah was thinking the same, of the key has been knackered for a while then it won't activate the coded control unit. Try the key and will be easier and cheaper to test than new control unit.
Should still open locks when you physically turn the key in the lock
Looks to me like the lock rods are missing the plastic ends.
That button on the interior is linked to the inner door handle not the key handle.
I had to do this with a blank key from Amazon as replacing the battery didn't work for me. Also the physical mechanism (where you put the key into the door) has a rebuild kit. Have done this twice since it is hot where I live and the spring just fails in them.
was just about to write this....

All credit to you Matt for your tenacity and resilience. Love this car.

This is probably one of the best Cars you’ve ever got RUclips wise. This series is the best to me you’ve ever done. Greetings from Germany Mat ✌🏽
Always check to make sure the job is finished and everything works properly before putting everything back together. It saves a lot of time and hassle doing those checks before buttoning everything back up.
I had the same thing with my e46 m3 diff, so I got it rebuilt for £500, new diffs are £1.5 -2k to just buy !
Stay strong the M Starts to Look so good and you did a good Job again !
It's an older car and it was used hard .

Was gonna suggest this too. Glad someone has pointed it out. Might *might* get away with it!
Castrol SAF-XJ 75w140 With FM Booster will help you with noisy diff
Loving the series! Who would love to see an hour long video or 40 mins etc? That would be dope! Please try doing a longer video Mat and love the content as always

You have to add FM booster to diff oil. I had a noise problem when cornering and the oil change with aditive helped.
Jeez Mat. This E46 M3 Project has morphed into a Full-on restoration Build. Even your voice sounds hoarse... Fantastic job! 👌
Iv had the same issue in the past with the central locking on e46s there's a sequence you have to do with the key in the ignition to resink it to the module. There's plenty of tutorials on RUclips 👍🏻
Loving this project!! Keep the good work! That blue beauty deserves it. E46 M3 is an automotive legend.
Try going to the rear of the car and point the key at the rear window, I had the same problem with my key and central locking. There’s a video on RUclips that shows you that you have to press the button a few times or something for it to work. Mines started working instantly
mine did the same on the diff after 5 years off the road. You need to put the friction modifier in the diff and it completely fixes it after 500 miles.
you have magic hands i am 1000% sure you will be able to fix the gorgeous Laguna Sec Blue E46 M3 in no time bro!!!!!! we have faith in you mat.
I have been following your videos since the BMW 1 serie and you're still making great videos. Thanks for sharing your passion.
Hi Matt you should also check the fuses in glovebox if I remember correctly there should be 3 fuses for the central locking/alarm, there should be a white plastic diagram sheet to help find the fuses, the 5amp fuse is the most common one to blow hope this helps
@3.35 i think i see compression fittings on coper brake line... Don't if thats the case. Just use cunifer and replace entire lines.
Your technique painting the calipers is how it should be - nice and quick 👍
Great effort Mat. Solution to your diff issue mentioned below.
Dedication has been impressive, keep it up man.
The m3 is fighting back, actually making these vids even more interesting. It will be worth it in the end.
This car with this color its my wet dream... Im so jealous of it not gonna lie. This car will definetely give back in joyrides when you finish it. Keep it up with this amazing job. Cheers mate, I love what you are doing.

Release the unlock button.
To complete the BMW key programming process, turn on the ignition.
I’m loving this project! Mat you said it came with a spare key, did you try the buttons one too? Often the spare is better than the main one when worn out! Please stick a Wavetrac LSD on there 🙏🏼👀
Matt, your work ethic is very impressive, nothing seems to phase you, you just get busy and crack on with it. Kudos to you man
Hi Matt check your gm5 module behind the glovebox if yours is a later module it wil say (star12) on the module, and these very rarely go wrong they can be swapped like for like same part numbers if is playing up,also check your fzv anttena which is behind the panel on n/s c pillar it's the grey box plenty on eBay doesn't need to be the same part numbers, hope this helps. All the best!
Loving the videos Matt. Just got made redundant and I have two young kids and it’s going to be a struggle this Christmas but your videos make everything a bit better
Mate, the work you put into these videos is incredible!
Not to worry! We stand behind you! Bring on the content! 👍💪
GM5 module is broken for the central locking system, its coded but you can use one from the crap yard. did the same to my car
Just love the E46 M3.
That engine sounds healthy , and it's spitting water out the tailpipes like a boss , around the 17min mark ...
Absolutely loving this project Mat. This should be a TV show I love it, I look forward to the videos and hate it when they end
Keep up the great work brotha! You have such a great attitude and outlook on everything...esp when you discover/handed the bad news and problems with all your builds...its a breath of fresh air and motivating to all who watch!

The diff issue is probably the clutches, much cheaper to fix than a new diff.. bit of a mission though but possible.
My central locking had an issue and it was the relay on the gm5 unit, soldered new relays in. Company’s on eBay will do them for you

Looking good mate, my e46 key doesn’t work on the remote either.. you can try and reset the frequency in the key few vids on here for it.
I’d check the bearings in that
Diff!

If your doing a big brake upgrade have a look at putting f8x m3 or M4 front and rear calipers on. Still kinda oem
Good work as always Matt, been watching all the videos as of late always a pleasure to watch and gives me the motivation to work on my own motor. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Fantastic build. Its all part of the journey with older cars but worth it in the end. 👍
Love it bud I’ve got one I’ve had mine for 16 years and my diff has not done the clonking but on full lock you can feel the lsd from when I first got it and that was with only 30k on the clock so that’s no worries 👊🏻👌🏻❤️
My central looking stop working on my bmw 520d touring (2010). Turned out to be broke wire that runs up to the bmw diversity antenna box.
Matt when you fitted the door actuator did you make sure the bar between the key barrel and the actuator when into the star shape slots in the back of the actuator? There is also a initialisation procedure for the remote key Great channel, always enjoy

Can also get the small plastic valet key for about £30/40
Check the rear driveshafts i had the same noise on my x5 changed rear diff for a brand new one from dealers and still had the same noise turned out to be the driveshaft clicking
you know what time is it!!!!! sheeeeesh anotehr banger video from the man the myth and legend Mat Armstrong let's get it!!!!
Loving these videos with this old M3. Great to see you bring this old beast back to life again mate. Keep up the good work!
Keep up the great work!😊
find myself checking for a MA upload every day. best youtuber since day
I hop on RUclips everyday after work looking forward to watch your videos. It’s like a reward.
Great video! Consider getting the diff rebuilt. Looking forward to the next video.
Loving the content on the E46 probably saved it from being broken for parts.
And your right that is the joy of working on older cars lol
Loving this build, reminds me of the days of the Audi TT. Current i own a BMW F30 Series and had a E92 also but would love to own a E36. Please but this up for raffle! I would buy the lot!!
just found this channel! prolly the best automotive youtuber right now!
Loving the content mat 👌 , wouldn't worry too much about the rear diff , just had my 1 series refurbished for less than £300 , drives like a new one 😀
I’m not an E46 fan, but this has been the best content since the Golf R, keep it up!
Love the M3, great video and some work put into it by you, de have sky rocketed in value.
Best build ever loving this series 💯
On my old e46 electronics for the central locking was under the glove box easy fix .
You just said that 🙄
Love the E46 content - one day I'll have one!
The black diffuser does look good actually on the blue paint
U need to program the key insert key turn to ignition 1 pull out hold lock up Button then press lock Button 3 Times while still holding lock upp Button.
Matt Get a 4:10 ratio rear diff makes the car more alive try the guys at Everything M3 in Banbury you won’t regret it.
Hi mate, when you replace the battery in the key fob, there is a procedure you need re teach the key to the car.
Powerflex bushes? Noooooo! Chin up Mat, loving this build - really looks beautiful in that colour.
Great series Matt! Had the same issue with locking system, turned out to be the barrel! Bought a rebuild key off ebay (about 5 pounds) and it fixed it! Good luck with the rest
Second this comment less than a tenner off ebay and a fairly easy job solved the problem on my e46
I hope you’re going to finish up the subframe reinforcement job with a Vince bar or CMP kit!
