    In terms of Chili’s miscarriage- in the episode Sheepdog, we see Bluey tell Wendy that she thinks Chili wishes she didn’t have children, and we see Wendy immediately say how that isn’t true. In the episode Sticky Gecko, we see Chili tell Bluey that Wendy made her five lasagnas when Bluey was born. I think based on those two instances, plus many other small details in the show, it’s very clear that Wendy was involved with Chilis miscarriage and was a friend to comfort her. I think she’s such a good neighbor, and the fact that the show subtly tells us the story is really beautiful

    This episode hit close to home because cancer at a young age took away my ability to have any children of my own. I had someone just laugh it off and told me I can always adopt. It made me never want to talk about it again. It also hurts when people are like, you wouldn't know until you have your own kids like it's some sort of gated secret community. I worked in professional childcare for almost two decades and helped my mother raise my 3 (decade younger) siblings after the divorce, but I guess I don't know about raising children because I didn't birth any of them. Yeah, it makes you bitter. It makes you feel like a failure at life. Brandy had every right to isolate herself for those 4 years.

    • @StonedHunter
      @StonedHunter Год назад +84

      @Maenk90 it's still a rude and insensitive thing to say. It still undervalues and minimizes the very really feelings someone with fertility issues is experiencing. Also, depending on where you live, adoption is too expensive and, therefore, not a viable option.

  • @Vhagaryen
    @Vhagaryen Год назад +972

    I want to make a special point about why Brandy could choose not to adopt. I've read accounts from children that were adopted by people who hadn't processed the trauma of being infertile. These people, now grown, sadly could tell growing up that their parents considered them to be the "second choice" - that their parents were disappointed that their children weren't biological. Infertile people/couples can adopt successfully, but they MUST completely process the trauma and grief of being unable to create the biological family they'd initially hoped for. Infertility sufferers should seek grief therapy, because their grief is the grief of never being able to create the family they initially wanted.

    • @mzamnesia7190
      @mzamnesia7190 Год назад +166

      I think society places too much emphasis on blood quantity in terms of what makes a family. I think a lot of this trauma people feel in the first place is because of this insane emphasis and pressure put on women to bear children, children of their "own" like its a key factor to being a woman. I get really sick when I see people constantly saying "child of my OWN" as someone who doesn't have a "mother of my OWN". I've never really heard someone say, "Yeah I want a mom of my OWN" the way parents label kids. Adopted kids being treated like a hand-me-down you begrudgingly accepted. I hope some day people can move past this blood-relative obsession, where family is what youre born into. My mom is my mom, and I'm her daughter. She didn't carry me as a fetus but she carried me as a toddler, a child, teen, and even now she still carries me as an adult.

    • @Its_Asteria
      @Its_Asteria Год назад +42

      @mzamnesia7190 right. Processing the grief before adopting would also help this issue. Many people who end up having kids by blood don't want them and so those kids end up in foster care, so having a family that does want them but has also processed their own issues, will also prevent those issues from affecting the child. Generational trauma can pass down if the parent hasn't been able to reconcile or heal in any way. Resulting in the Chile developing that as well. However for some people it's not an obsession with having blood relations. Some people just want to have that experience of carrying and birth, even with how hard and painful it can be. So for some it hurts emotionally, especially for afab women. But once able to move past that grief. And heal, they may decide either to adopt, or to not have kids at all. It varies person to person and situation I think. For example for you, I'd say if for example your mother had this grief, I don't know what her history was and I won't demand you to tell me as that's personal to her. But I'd imagine if she adopted you simply because of the second option deal, and hadn't processed her grief. It could have affected you negatively in your growth. But like you said she was able to care for you and love you the same. So I'd imagine we'd want that for adopted children. A safe environment, especially if they came from troubled homes already.
      But that is my view on it based on my understanding of families and family trauma as well as child development

      @mzamnesia7190 Год назад +37

      @@Its_Asteria
      I think as generations keep talking more and more and spread awareness of the difficulty maybe it will become less traumatic over time. things like miscarriages happen all the time, sporadically, for like no reason, and with the subject of bodily autonomy being so big right now the subject of women experience is popping.
      A lot of pressure is put on women to have babies, carry babies, etc etc and it starts from the time they're born to "be moms". Its no wonder people like my mom feel like less when they can't carry a baby.
      I feel terrible she had gone through that, but her whole life she knew she wanted to "Be a mom" which is wild to me, because i NEVER experienced that feeling. she eventually WAS able to have my little brother, but whenever she talked about us she never called my bother "her own". It was always just "my kids" and she'd even say "We had our daughter--" instead of saying adopted. I never felt like a transplant or "not hers". I hope women get the healing they need, and its unfair so many feel like they were robbed of something when the alternative is just as beautiful. i love my mom so much

    With the adoption thing, I would also love adoption to be included in the show! But I don’t quite think is should be Brandi who adopts.
    Everything you said in the video is absolutely spot on! But there is also how finding out could make the child feel. Adopted children of infertile parents can often feel like they’re a parents last choice, and that if their parents could have children they wouldn’t think twice about them. In addition, the adults in these situations can sometimes find it difficult to actually connect with and love their adopted child- whether still grieving or still holding on to what could have been, an adopted child can sometimes just act as a reminder that it wasn’t meant to be.
    The biggest motivating factor for adoption should always be to give a child a home, not to fill a gap in your own heart!! For the sake and sanity of all involved parties, don't adopt unless adoption is what you wanted to begin with

Technically speaking, yes, adopting and carrying a child to term are who way different things and processes--
      but what I see from these peoples arguments is they dont see an adopted child as "their" child and it honestly just disgusts me. If someone thinks an adopted child isn't "their own" child, please dont adopt. Please dont have step kids--because they're the type of parent to treat a step kid different from their birthed one because "they're not my OWN child". Whether or not you birthed a human deciding if its "your" child is just a shit take, but thats my 2 cents.

    It's a shame because setting aside the dream of having your "own child" adoption isn't as simple as going to the orphanage and picking a kid. You need approval and harder for most, money. It's important because the well-being of the child being adopted is important, but those same necessary qualifications are also what stops many from getting adopted at all.
    It's sadly "easier" to be able to get pregnant and birth your kids, because you don't have anything standing in the way of you getting them, it's about being sure you're fit enough to keep them. Adopting parents have to be fit to both get AND keep their children and love or the want to have a child in your life sadly isn't enough. It's not as simple of an option as people think and that's taking out the insensitive notion that "they just don't want a kid that's not biologically related." Which, no matter what it's valid to have that want for biological children as long as it doesn't effect how you treat children you adopt or children others choose to adopt. You aren't an evil person for wanting that for yourself, so long as you make sure that if you choose to and are able to adopt a child that you can see them as yours and give them the love they need and deserve.

      There's also the fact that the desire to reproduce is one of the basic instincts of every living being, even for non-sentient plantlife. Having that normal, natural ability permanently ripped away from you is gut-wrenching in a way that's impossible to describe, and was never a wound adoption was meant to fix. In fact, many adoption agencies warn against rushing into adoption for that very reason, because it gives parents a skewed idea of what the process actually entails.
      The fact that there are people in this comment section with the audacity to act like people who wanted their own biological children are just being selfish and invalidating adoption somehow is beyond absurd. It's on par with going up to a grieving widow during the funeral and telling her to just get over it and get a new husband, or else she's invalidating everyone whose ever remarried after losing their spouse.

    Tens of thousands of dollars, hundreds of shots, so many meds and supplements, countless blood draws, loss of control of hormones, physical pain, emotional pain, countless Dr. appointments and so many sleepless nights crying only to continue crying in the car on the way to work, resentfulness towards loved ones and friends and always pretending that you're okay is only the tip of the iceberg when fighting this battle.

    I feel like an episode where Brandi is babysitting for Chilli (and I swear, the Disney+ subtitles are beginning to regularly spell her name Chilli now, but I swear I saw spellings as Chili in earlier seasons' episodes) that opens with optimism for a fun day with the girls, but quickly devolves into Brandi realizing the sacrifices that need to be made in her lifestyle to incorporate children. In the end, I think the episode would end at the beginning of her next babysitting stint, showing that Brandi hasn't changed her whole life, but is making easy changes to help her life be more open for her nieces. The challenge is writing the children's story with a game that pushes Brandi's living style (décor, choice of furniture, etc.) to the limit, with something breaking being the climatic point for both storylines, where the kids realize they need to realize that the rules someone gives you at their house is important, but Brandi realizes that the way she styles her home is prone to damage with children around, and in effect, how different her life would be taking care of children every day. The resolution showing that Bluey and Bingo are more prepared to follow the lead, and Brandi making small adjustments to her life to make space for her nieces.

    I think a better argument to counter the “Why don’t infertile couples just adopt?” one would be “A kid who’s adopted does not need to carry the emotional baggage of their new parents.”
    Adoption is a tricky process, mostly due to obtuse laws, but in part also because I think we focus too much on the parents and not the children. There’s both this weird idea that adopted children are “mere replacements” for biological children AND that they’re “not like the real thing” (actual way I’ve seen people describe them!) which is even more disgusting.

We feel like we can’t ever have children despite wanting them for a myriad of reasons; financial, feeling like schools in the US are not safe, I’m unwed, etc. This episode breaks my heart and makes me cry because I’ve had to come to terms that it’s likely not going to happen, even if it’s by my choice because I’m scared of bringing a child into a world that feels like it’s ending.

    I think people often forget how infertility isn’t just solved by adoption, as there are other emotional and sometimes physical aspects of it to grapple with. I myself have never wanted children and I still don’t, but when I found out I was infertile, I burst into tears and later went through a period of emotional pain. Not exactly over not being able to have children, but from the idea that my body didn’t work the way it was meant to, that something was wrong with me-something that causes other symptoms that are physically and emotionally painful as well. And while I don’t think I’ll change my mind on having children, it did affect me to realize that if I ever did, my choices for how to go about having kids had already been made for me. It’s a complex topic, and I think it’s often why “just adopting” doesn’t always work to make people who are infertile feel better.
    Anyway, I adored this video, this episode is easily one of my favorites, for all the same reasons. That scene by the door, of Bingo looking so much like Brandy, always gets me emotional too ❤

My youngest sister became an advocate for miscarriage awareness, while the older of my younger sisters suffered in silence. One Christmas, the first with my first born, she was going through a miscarriage, and no one knew. Both have their rainbow babies now, so i don't know how they would take it.

    I just had my first child.
    Was watching Bluey to get ready for the upcoming cartoons I’ll be watching with him and saw this. I couldn’t imagine how this could feel because I have my child now. But I know it has to be difficult. It’s not something adoption can just fix. There is a reason she didn’t visit for 4 years. It’s hard knowing you just can’t experience it.
    As hard as pregnancy is, the experience is something so many people wish for yet can’t have. My heart goes to anyone in this situation.
    Also don’t use adoption as a coping strategy. Take your time to grieve then reconsider if adoption is a good idea. You don’t want to adopt a child and accidentally hurt them when your trying to heal.

Just the cost alone is prohibitive for most people. It’s also hard for LGBTQ+ people as a lot of private agencies are faith-based and will only work with married heteronormative couples. And it took about three years from start to finish. Actually, more than four years if you count the time between the placement of my child and when his adoption was finalized.

I pictured getting married at 25 having some fun, traveling, etc then have kids at 30. I recall being crestfallen on my 30th birthday that I wasn't in a realtionship. I didn't see my nieces that often either, because I was trying to setup dates and put myself out there. It hurt both ways. But luckily when I was 33 I met the love of my life, who was a little older than me. We didn't have time to travel the world together, but we had both traveled as single people, so we went straight to starting a family after we were married. Life doesn't always work out how you expect. I'm glad I invested a lot of time bettering myself to get in a relationship. But I can sympathize.

    Chilly says that there is nothing anyone can do to make the onesie fit.
    It can also relate that when people have infertility issues, they try to get medical help, and while there are case where they can do something, sometimes there is nothing anyone can do. Which is probably the case with brandy.
    I also find the fact they use onsies specifically kind of symbolic since it's a full body clothing and people whit infertility issues that want kids can feel like there is something wrong with their entire body. But that one might be a stretch.

    Thank you for bringing up the adoption point! Adoption is not a fix for infertility and not the end all, be all solution! If anything, adoption can just be a band-aid fix and can even harm the child being adopted as they will figure out that they were only adopted because of the original children the adopted parents wanted and could have a feeling of inferiority growing up if not handled correctly. You should want to adopt because you're emotionally and mentally ready. Nobody should be pressured to adopt especially after an emotional and mental event as learning you're infertile especially because adoption is not something simple either.

    We are having a hard time conceiving. My sister's first daughter EVERYONE said looked just like me when I was young (and honestly, I could see it too). It was very difficult for me for a lot of reasons, though I never closed myself off from the relationship for the kids' sake. Right now, she's having a hard time trying to get them back (state took them but the case is still open). A LONG time - starting literally a month after my miscarriage of my only ever confirmed pregnancy - they would ask if we would adopt them instead, and when I finally had the mental capacity to agree to it, she changed her mind. I can't handle that again and stepped completely out of the picture after that (not out of their lives, just out of the adoption picture) and it still hurts regardless, but I can't mentally be strung around like that given my own struggles. My mother in law once asked why I wouldn't adopt them and I admitted that I wanted to be a mom, not just a forever aunt. And she (having 2 kids, mind you) said, "I'd love to be a forever aunt." Which really felt invalidating.
    Them pointing out that Chili's child Bingo looked like Brandy, her aunt, literally reminded me of that conversation between me, my sister, her daughter, and family and does make it feel less alone.

She has tons of nieces and nephews though so there’s plenty of children in her life to love, but she was never able to have her own.
    I’ll never intrude on what it was like for her to never have her dream, that doesn’t seem like an area I should intrude on in her life but I feel this gives a clue of what she went through, and I just feel terrible for her.

    id love to see Brandy adopt a kid that is in Bingo's class at kindie.
    it would be a great piece of development for her, but also showcase some of the difficulties of adoption from both angles.
    and i think it would be super sweet to see them a few times in a series growing closer in their relationship.
    or,, honestly just having her babysit for the first time, because thats really scary the first time you are left in charge of a relatives kid. i imagine it as something similar to the moral of Octopus, that there are many ways to play the same game and make it fun, there are many ways of looking after kids that can be fun for them.

    I think Brandi would be a great way to create a discussion about adoption especially of adopting a child of a different race (breed for the show’s purposes) and how to navigate it

    When I was ~12 social workers and foster parents forced me to take period blockers. My therapist barely mentioned that they might have a negative reaction with my other medication. My dad on the other hand immediately began to ask for a second opinion and turns out they had a high chance to worsen my depression and... make me infertile. I took them on and off for a month until my dad threatened to sue. I'd keep them in my mouth, pretend to swallow, and then spit them out. For the past 3 years I've had the thought in my head that I may be infertile and it's terrified me. The odds are so low and logically it makes no sense, but it still scared me. A few months ago I had a breakdown about that and my boyfriend reassured me that even if I wasn't able to have children he'd still love me. Something about that calmed me. I don't worry about that anymore, but still. That estrogen is aggressive and I can't imagine a future where I'm not a mom. The way you broke this down was so... beautiful. To imagine the pain these women are going through and to be able to put it into words through a "kids" show. Sorry for this comment being all over the place I'm a bit emotional lol
    (Yes I know I'm 15 and that I'm too young blah blah. I know that. I know very well that I probably won't have kids until I'm 25, but that doesn't mean that I can't worry. I'm a hormonal young woman, that's what we do. We worry and men bring us back to earth. It's a beautiful co-existence :) ok emotional and personal rant over)

    I don't know what has me bawling more. The episode or the deep dive. I've never heard such a good understanding of the pain of infertility. I'm aunt brandy and I wonder exactly what bluey ask her mom. I was adopted I don't want to adopt. I can't even look at my family and hear she looks like you.

    When Bluey yells ‘She gonna eat me’ it’s a reference to The Lion King

    From what we have seen now from Dragon, Bingo and Brandy both have similar markings as Chilli and Brandy's mom. Also, speaking from my own life, I have a niece who looks more like I did at her age than her mom (my sister) did, so I agree that Bingo actually being Brandy's daughter is a little unbelievable.l

    You know what I think no one asks, how has Brandy tried to have children of her own? Does she have a partner we have never seen or heard of? If so, how has this affected them and their relationship with Brandy? Is Brandy single and she tried other options for kids of her own? I guess until she is featured in more episodes, we will never know.
    Great work on analyzing this great episode. Fantastic work.

    I am so hyped for the video on Calypso. Meg Washington is my absolute favorite singer songwriter of all time. Her song Batflowers is legitimately what I wish I could have shown myself last year when I felt my life had no direction or purpose. I could gush on and on about her but I'm so excited for you to dive into the character she plays. Your content is so wonderful and insightful, and I'm positive it'll be amazing

    "She's gonna eat me" is also a line from the Lion King.
    Pumba says it to Timoan when nala is chasing him. I think it's a Disney nod. 😊

    This scene deeply moved me. A lot of times, the focus is alway centered on the women that have to deal with infertility, but there’s almost no mention or discussion of how it affects the man in a relationship.
    While my wife and I struggled to just get pregnant, I had to deal with trying to put on the brave face and be the rock for her as she struggled with the realization that, without medical assistance, we would almost likely never have a child. It’s almost impossible to describe to others the utter feeling of hopelessness that seeps through a man, and how just seeing commercials for simple baby products is intensely triggering, or hearing his wife crying her eyes out about how she’s so sorry that there’s something wrong with her that she can’t give ME the family that we dreamed of, it hurts on a level that I wish no man ever has to understand.
    I’m eternally grateful that, through medical science, we were able to have a child, who is a perfectly healthy and a lively two year old that we both love unconditionally.
