I love how they didn't sugar coat it. They were honest. Children are smarter and more tolerable of stress than we give them credit for. Bluey is a brilliant example to us all, both for parents and their kids, but also adults without kids.
Agreed. This is what stuck out to me the most. Normally in this kind of thing you'd expect the adult to say something gentler like "They didn't make it." or "They're gone." but those kinds of words can just lead to confusion in younger kids.
It caught me off gaurd when the vet said die I was expecting them to be like its moved on

I feel like Bluey is the new Sesame Street.
Don't get me wrong, they teach differently and different things, but the amount of care and attention poured into a show that's dedicated to one audience but also does so much to ensure that the whole audience can enjoy and learn from it feels reminiscent of pre-HBO & Elmo Sesame Street.

I just wanna say this is easily one of the best episodes of the first season and a very strong one for Bluey's character in general. Also does a phenomenal job at showing Bandit being an honest dad with a heart of gold. I also love how the episode subverts the audience's expectations without it feeling like tonal whiplash or being untrue to what the show is about. Just.. gallant.
This is the episode my friend who has a kid recommended me to watch. It’s the entire reason I fell in love with the show
I was so shocked and taken aback when she said “The budgie died” just from the fact that no one ever says died/dead in a “children’s” show (in quotes cause this shit hit me as an adult with no children) I love it so much
I was so shocked because I didn't think children's shows ever even did things like that at all.
But I love that they did because it's a really meaningful episode and helps kids who might be dealing with something like that
its such a relief this show actually said the word 'died' and didnt sugarcoat! the amount of shows or apps or stories or _anything_ that pretend that the topic and words about death are something you cant bring up where kids can see is so... insulting? its not only a truth about reality, but one that everyone has to face eventually, even young kids. its better they know what it is and get the tools to deal with it rather than be shielded from it and pretend like its forbidden. itll come up no matter what people do, so its better to be mature and honest about it.
Well either way I enjoy most kid shows

I wish I knew more about death when my great grandma died. I didn't understand and thought it was my fault cause when I was asked if I wanted to visit her I said no and she died a week kater and that was the last chance I had to visit her.
I didn't understand and fell into a depression that nobody seemed to understand because "you weren't as close to her as I was" or "you're closer to (person) than you were to her"
Clearly the smartest things to say to an 11 year old who's experiencing a major death for the first time in her life right?
Anyways, I agree, I don't know why death is seen as a taboo subject, its not, its just the end of life, its a circle, we're born, we live, we die, and depending on your religion or beliefs you either go somewhere else or you're reborn, or you just vanish. I'm not saying this should be discussed with toddler, no absolutely not, but acting like the word die is offensive or taboo is just insulting to the intelligence of children, especially those who already have had to death with death in some way shape or form
My capstone project for my degree was focused on how children in early childhood learn about death and experience grief. It's super important to use the proper language in early childhood. Died instead of "in a better place" or "in heaven".
The moment in this episode that I find hilarious is that after the pretend car drive, Bluey doesn't stop to watch out for cars, and slips on a toy car. This is in comparison to the actual moment where Bluey was about to go, but Bandit reminds her to watch out for cars. Had she copycat-ed the day correctly, she wouldn't have slipped.
This is the episode I show people when I’m trying to get them to care about or understand ‘Bluey.’ That a TV show so easily understands children and conveys that understanding so well is incredible to me. Growing up in the 90’s, nobody gave a crap about the needs or psychology of children. Or at least, nobody my child self knew. I’m so glad we have shows like ‘Bluey,’ to show kids a healthy and happy family even if they don’t have one themselves.
Exactly. It helps give kids standards on how they and the ones around them should be treated. That's one of the reasons I love this show so much

It's so important to talk to children about death. I'm a children's librarian and we had an incident with a kid thinking one of our staff members died because she "went away" which is what she was told when her fish died. This kid was SO scared to come back to storytime because she was so confused as to why my staffer was back and her fish wasn't.
The way bluey shows kids processing their traumas through play is genuinely the biggest part of it to me. This episode is amazing for that. But one that really exemplifies this, and hits super close to home for me, is early baby.
I was in my late teens when my younger brothers were born. The older of the two, now a toddler, had a really rough, early birth, that was genuinely traumatic for the whole family. So seeing that shown through a child’s play, clearly as a way for Indy to deal with the stress of a situation she barely even understood, really really hit, and it’s the episode that will always always have me in tears.
i didnt know that owning a plushie of a passed animal could be contributed to processing grief tbh... i own plushies that resemble my past dogs that i keep put up because theyre special to me
I'm excited that you're eventually gonna tackle the episode Dragon. Not only did it resonate with me as an artist but the ending with Chilli parting ways with her horse who's metaphorically her deceased mom really hit me hard.
Copycat was my introduction to the show. No regrets.
I feel like this whole episode could be scored to the song "Children Will Listen" from Into the Woods - "Careful the things you say, children will listen - careful the things you do, children will see and learn..." - Bluey and Bingo are absorbing messages and modes of behavior from their parents all the time, and thankfully, that includes stuff like this - helping an innocent creature even when the circumstances are dire.

I just found out that in the episode the claw (season 1 episode 19) you can see the budgie toy before the episode copycat (season 1 episode 38) was released when the heeler family enters their house again after they got home from the restaurant where Bluey and Bingo played with the real claw machine out in the back and didn't win anything.
I’ve always noticed that as well, we know that the episodes release dates don’t necessarily go in chronological order most likely due to multiple episodes being made around the same time as each other, so this stuff occurs where we see props from future episodes in past episodes. I remember listening to an interview that also said that they sometimes include items in the background as a reference for future episodes as well so I suppose you can take your pick on which one this would be for the episode claw. Either way it’s a fun little Easter egg in that episode 😁
This episode is one of the best portrayals of death in a kids show, undeniable, the execution was just perfect.
Personally, this is the exact moment when the show catapulted away from it's confort zone; handled in such direct and realistic manner, no sugar-coating nor avoiding, just the full-on thruth; the budgie has died and there wasn't anything the two could have done...
Bluey's coping mechanism, recreating her whole day is so relatable, I used to do exactly the same whenever something tragic happened to me; love Bandit's attitude towards the whole episode, making sure to confort her distressed daughter but reminding her of the harsh thruth in a direct manner (same with Chilli later joining in)... and to think everything escalated from a simple copycat game?... Man, why is the show so glorious?!
Now it stands among those other gems that depicted the topic in a respectful and carefully built manner, along with Mr Rogers, Sesame Street, Charlie and Lola, Milly and Molly... it'll always be remembered as a classic

Yeah I've noticed how my 2 year old brother acts out things through pretend play (as well as talking/playing with his 1 year old sister). Like putting his toys in the "timeout corner" and talking them through appropriate actions. Or talking through disappointments, or offering help, or telling them how to ask for help. All sorts of things. It's really adorable. Our dad would sometimes try to interrupt to emphasize the "right way" (like what to do when you're fighting or angry, or things you shouldn't do) and I have to tell him to let him play, he's processing things. He processes what we say to him, what he's supposed to do (even if he doesn't always do it because, well, he's 2). Again, I just find it so cute. Just like when babies first start to cuddle a stuffy and pretend to feed them and pet them and stuff. I like seeing their little minds working.
Copycat and Dragon were the two episodes that really broke me. I'm 15 and lost my dad two years ago from Covid. His death was really sudden, and happened after a long two weeks of his body fighting while in a med-induced coma. It's left a gaping hole in my life, one that I've been trying my hardest to fill by getting out more. I miss my dad everyday. We've always been close, and he would always give me the courage to be my own person while making the right choices in life. After losing the most important person to me during such a difficult point in my life, I've had time to reflect on myself a lot. But I'm still afraid that I'll just slip through the cracks as I transition into adulthood.
Though despite everything, things have gotten better. I couldn't be more proud of my mom. She's improved so much, and became the healthy and independent women she's struggled to be for so long. My older sister currently has a fiance and a well-paying job. I've gotten to see my two beautiful nieces grow up to be their best selves.
As for me, I'm in a new school district that's surrounded me with a supportive community, and I've made more friends with people of my age, something I struggled hard with growing up. I've taken the necessary steps to cope with my depression and anxiety, even if it means taking small steps out of my comfort zone. I recently got diagnosed with ADHD as well, which has given me a lot of the answers I've needed about my mental health. It's been a journey to get here, but things like Bluey and your videos have reminded me that I'm not alone in my struggles. That I don't have to feel alienated because of my trauma, and that there's people who are willing to help me.

I had no expectations of Bluey when my teacher recommended it back in November 2022. I watched top to bottom and this was the first episode that got me crying. And then camping was the episode that showed me what a show Bluey really is. And then at my workplace, I met a guy around 17 or 19 I forgot sadly. I asked him about Bluey and he told me that he also watches it sometimes and we talked about well... Copycat. we explained everything about the episode together. And I'm never gonna meet him again because he lives 100 miles away from me. I miss him...
grief hits very different for me,cause over the years I've noticed,I never cry when someone dies or if a pet dies,I only feel sad for a day or 2 and that's it,but I think when I was a kid I only cried once or twice over a death,from my uncle died when I was a kid,someone just straight up beat him up for no reason,my friend that died in a fire when we were kids,he was alot younger than me,and I don't remember anything else past those events,but I do remember when our cat died,he lived for 17 years,I hated the silence around the house,it made me feel sad and uneasy cause I've been so used to him running around the house and meowing everyday for 17 years,and I think that's it,yeah I don't cry much or at all,I guess it's cause I know it's just part of life and there's nothing we can do about it but be sad for alittle while and move on,and that's never easy honestly
I’m the exact same way, I never cry, I feel sad but I don’t cry, I just move on, I’m not really sure why, thought it’s possible it might be due to my autism
I'm the same, at least around death. When my grandma died I remember trying to make myself cry at the funeral (aged 7) because I was the only one *not* crying. I think part of it was bc she died from cancer and she was so, so sick and so exhausted and just so ready to not be in pain anymore- for me it felt like a release. Finally she wasn't suffering.
Everyone grieves differently..sometimes it’s sad! Othertimes they just miss the person they don’t cry or get down or anything. I grieved what could be considered “hard” for my grandmother..she died in front of me and it hit me really badly, though tbf I’m a more emotional person
You know, if you think about it. The primary way of expressing grief for alot of people is creativity. For adults that means writing or painting but for kids, that just means playing games.
Bluey using play to cope with the loss of a budgie is just like how i used to cope with my sister being downright awful to me. It was the only real times my parents could remember that I would play like a normal kid, rather just setting up a dollhouse and leaving it for fun. I'd reenact what my sister had done to me and and would let the doll find some comfort because I couldn't get any myself. Bluey hits home so much.
Something that fascinates me about this episode is that it begins with the copycat game, and as the minutes go by they completely forget, until bandit says at the end of the chapter "Bluey, I just realized, you stop copying me" but actually, Bluey never stopped copying what his dad did, he even created a game to follow in his father's footsteps, he never stopped copying Bandit.

Being human is incredible. For a moment, imagine if that budgie knew and were able to understand the effect it had on Bluey, and how hard she tried to save it.
I really enjoyed the episode Copycat and how it showed Bluey dealing with the grief of a dead bird. I wasn’t expecting that kind of twist at first so it was really saddening. I instantly saw the connection of the game (thanks to a previous video of yours and my own observations) and how she was copying what her dad did earlier in the episode. I think it showed a great way of how some children will cope with a loss by repeating the same steps to help them feel through it again and process their emotions further. And then her line at the end “it’s out of our control” shows how she’s accepted it and that death is just a part of life. This was one of my favorite episodes that I’ve watched again and will rewatch in the future 💜
This kinda reminded me of that one Calvin and Hobbes comic where Calvin and Hobbes find an injured baby racoon. While his family takes him in and tries to take care of it (which the comic shows Calvin worrying and stressing over it), it ends up dying, which Calvin doesn't take as well as Bluey does here. The rest of the story shows Calvin working through his grief by talking to Hobbes about how he feels about the whole thing; his sadness toward the raccoon dying, the fact that he's glad that he even met it, the unfairness that it had to die at such a young age, and his fear of death itself. The story ends with Calvin telling Hobbes about his parents telling him about death being a part of life, and the final panel is of him hugging Hobbes, telling him not to go anywhere, with Hobbes reassuring him not to worry.
From what I can gather, Calvin is a very imaginative kid, but also a very philosophical one. He doesn't work through his grief through imaginative play like Bluey does (in fact, he seems use his imaginative play to get out of doing what he doesn't want to do). Instead, he works through his grief by asking questions that don't have a clear answer and relaying them to the one person he can trust to listen to him, even if he doesn't have any answers himself (being Calvin's imaginary friend, and all). But in this particular story, Calvin actually does relay these questions to his parents (albeit offscreen) and while he doesn't get a solid answer, the answer he does get actually satisfies him in a way that allows him to accept what happened.
This was the first episode of Bluey my daughter and I saw and I was absolutely floored when the budgie died, it was such a massive change of what I expected and was how I knew that this wasn’t your ordinary toddler show.
It also reminded me of how my daughter reacted when our dog had a heart attack and died in front of her. It was a surreal and awful time because I didn’t expect her to react like that. Though hers also involved months of nightmares, stressing about us dying, and constantly having to correct annoying well wishers who sugar coated and sometimes just outright lied to her which confused her. My daughter was only 3 at the time though, much younger than Bluey or Bingo.
I know this may sound a little weird, but from a young age, I had to experience grief and not only grief of other living things passing, but the concept of grieving over a emotional chapter in my life, dying way too early.
What I mean by this is that I at some point had to come with the terms that I would never have a childhood, at least until I am an adult and I can try and figure out what a childhood would’ve looked like. It hasn’t been easy, but at the age of 20 I am somewhat proud of the progress I’ve made when it comes to brewing a childhood for myself
I really wonder if you will tackle on Rug Island one day. I think that episode's meaning is often overlooked when it's about inner child, and tackling on childish imagination again in the adulthood. ( Especially when Bandit struggled to think of pens as other objects at first ) , and he couldn't fully immerse into game because of getting used to work and morals and ethics that are daily followed by adults ( Giving back rugby ball to pat ). And his "everything. probably means something bigger in Bandit's aspect.
This was the episode that made me think “This show actually did something unique”.
I was binging this show because I was clearly wanting to watch something that could be different and this show could have something in it. It was this episode that made me finally realise that it was not an ordinary kids show and I fell in love with this show after watching Camping.

Another reference with the power walking is that it is a nod to iconic Aussie TV show Kath and Kim. Two of the main characters would dress in exercise clothes and walk around the neighbourhood in the same way Bluey and Bandit did in this episode :) it'd be a reference mostly Australians would catch though!

It is VERY important for kids to learn about death. I’m studying to be a mortician, and in my thanatology (study of grief) class we took a long time talking about kids and death. There are many stages kids go through to learn about death where younger kids don’t understand it at all, going into thinking that death is similar to a long sleep, and finally learning that death is permanent and inevitable. Almost all kids will go through these phases, but if a young child is confronted with death (as I was at a young age) it’s important for parents and other caregivers to help kids understand what exactly death is. For many years in my youth, I believed that my grandma would eventually wake up, but obviously she never did and never will. My parents shielded me from what really happened to her, to the point where I didn’t even know she was cremated until I was a teen. Not blaming my parents, they’re wonderful people, but I know if/when I have kids I will not shield them from the reality of death. Although, my kids will probably have a very clear understanding of death from a young age just given my profession. Kinda hard to shield death from the children of a mortician lol.
For me when my grandma died I became depressed and mostly angry at the cancer that killed her now I want vengeance and I will dedicate my life to finding a cure
when i lost my dog my way to grief was by relating to my own character that also lost a loved one. :(
I am really amazed how @Pugly 's videos always increase your capacity for empathy and kindness once you understand so many emotions and processes he describes perfectly. You become aware of so much more that is going on people's minds, and kid's minds too.
One reason I love bluey is the fact that they don’t water down death. They don’t pretend death is just a ballon that flies away or anything. Bluey comes outright and shows how you will run into a living thing that is hurt and then the living thing die. To make it more age appropriate, they use a bird, something we will all encounter, and not a family member, preventing kids from being concerned for their family members and their health.
In the 1st seconds of the episode you can hear the budgie getting hurt too

i was gonna say- i dont know if it was pointed out before, but i find it incredible that nobody sheds a tear during this episode- even when bluey runs to chilli and hugs her, there arent any tears. im so used to feelings being represented so externally and played up that i just expected it- and after thinking about this episode more and the side-by-sides thanks to you, it really shows how much thought is put into theses episodes. im glad i watched your video.

I don’t know what it is about Bluey, but almost every single one of them can make me cry. The music makes me feel so much emotion, the characters are so deep yet so simple, there is so much to this show that makes me feel so many intense emotions and even just watching videos breaking down different Bluey episodes makes me feel so SO much.
I just noticed during this episode that Brandy and Chilli both have similar ears to their mom. Brandy’s is white along with the same “white” chest through the stomach but even though Chili’s is brown, the same ear is “cut off” on the coloring from behind. Like her and Brandy would have the same ear is Chili’s was white.
Reminds me of the Raccoon arc of Calvin and Hobbes. They find a baby racoon, they look after it, and it dies.
In a surprising moment of sincerity, Calvin cries and the parents comfort him.

I know it’s late but I want to say thank you for covering this episode! Over the summer my parents dog attacked a baby rabbit and even tho my folks were joking about the dog being a hunter, my older brother and I were very upset about it. I took what I remembered from this episode with a towel and box, got a warm water bottle and a shoebox, and drove us and the bunny to the emergency vet. The poor baby didn’t survive, when we had a few moments to say goodbye I cried and apologized for not being there in time and taking her to a strange faraway place instead of being home safe in her den. As soon as I got home I took a shower, got in the safety corner of my bed and watched the episode again, and I think that was a crucial step in helping me process that grief. I still struggle to maintain the boundary of “no dead bunny” jokes with my mom, she didn’t notice we left to go to the vet and doesn’t think it was that big of a deal, but I’ve gotten better at being able to move forward with it all.
I really loved this episode. I’ve tried to save lots of birds and none of them survive, so I really felt for Bluey.

@@_kaleido I think it’s really important to teach kids that they may not be able to save everything they try to, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t try to save anything. I really loved Bandits role modelling in this episode, it was a great example of ‘be the person you want your child to be’
not sure if its intentional but with the tea towels having a Big Ben one and the outback could be a reference to wild budgies coming from the outback Aus which are the typical green budgies but were domesticated in England which also breed the blue budgies which would tie in to the tea towels not sure though

Many family members have been passing away in quick succession, mostly on my mom’s side. Many beloved pets have also passed away in the last year or so, including the most important pet of all: my cat Luke. This has forced me to learn how to not be depressed and process things.
I call this period the big sad. A period of a lot of loosing loved ones in the span of one year.

This is was the first episode in my first experience with Bluey when I realized that the show is actually aimed at me as an adult and a Mom. Embracing that actually has made me a better Mom and Aunt. I was uncomfortable with kids before I had one of my own, and I am not a natural parent. But when I play with my nieces and nephews and daughter, I use Bluey as a manual and it helps! In a month it'll be the one year "anniversary" of my best friend's suicide. I don't know how else to put it. They went away. We thought They went camping with their dad. Two weeks passed. "The Wi-Fi is probably out". Three weeks. "Probably grounded". A month later my friend messaged me Their obituary. They killed themself and we (me and Their other friend) found out a month late. I'd known Them for years and would consider them one of my first online friends. We were three peas in a pod. We'd troll, draw, VC, and do all sorts of stupid things together. Then... they were gone. The remaining friend told me that I meant so much more to Them than I knew. And I felt guilty for not talking to Them more. The remaining 2 of us began to argue. My friend processed the grief wildly differently. She said horrible things. I then did horrible things.
She apologised in October and I've been too nervous to respond since. Every day I think about the apology I'll give her. They wouldn't have wanted us to argue this way.
As the days tick by and we get closer and closer to the date of that dreaded day, I can't help but feel a weird sense of melancholy. I've recovered. I still miss them dearly and feel weird whenever I see Their art, but I don't sob uncontrollably over it. I was 14 when lost Them. Now I'm 15. A lot of things have changed very fast. I wonder if my friend will even recognise me and if we'll still be compatible.

This analysis has come at the perfect time. Its been 6 months since my gran passed and until this weekend we thought our 4 year old had accepted she wouldnt see her again. We spent most of Saturday as out of nowhere (well, it was a christmas toy she took from her house) it just seem to hit her she was gone.
While we got her calm I feel the need to sit down sometime and talk things throughor at least be prepared for next time as she hasnt fully accepted her being gone. TBH it is something im dreading.
I’ve always used scenarios in my head that mimic the trauma and painful experiences. I say mimic because I often change it a little like a child changing their game. It helps me process what happened while mentally preparing myself for future similar events. As a kid I always played In my mind so this came naturally to me. I used to occasionally move my toys while acting out their words, emotions and actions all in my head. I built their Lego environments with a mix of toys and Legos to help me imagine it. I used to use that to process painful emotions too. I also narrate things in my mind too. It’s odd It helps. I know I’ve never been a typical person, even as a child, but I like how I process things. It helped me get through years of trauma. It’s not perfect but it’s what I do and it works well enough for me

It really shows how death can be so unexpected. We are also caught off guard and experience it with bluey. Including us in the first scenes also makes us feel the guilt of obliviousness. great episode
This episode felt so real to me cause its almost like how I usually process my grief but not for a living being but mostly for objects and things that are no longer there

This is an amazing episode from both pugly and bluey , this episodes was one of the episodes that truly hooked me in and made me REALLY interested in bluey, and your video made me appreciate it even more i didn't know about the towers hint to the budgie's passing and also the toy buddgie

You know they should make episodes on how the death of bandits dad and the death of chilly mom affected them as it would be relateable for ppl who lost their parents and how to deal with it

Ok, have to comment right away too many things to be said. So after the 1st and 2nd watch of the episode, tbh i didnt really understand why bluey deal with her grief like that. But after the this deep-dive, i can't believe how perfect this episode is (like every single movement) also your video make me kinda being a child again (remember how i used to deal with these situations, how on earth they capture that so perfectly). Also unlike being too harsh or sugar-coating any situation for the kids, this is very gently but realistic (and the best way) to deal with these things. Your video is perfect as well, shown a lot of informative and emotional thing that viewer might miss. You need to be proud about yourself after all that effort to make this video ❤

I also watch a show called The Lion Guard. In an episode in the third season titled Long Live the Queen, Queen Janna passes away on screen in front of the other characters. I could tell how heart broken Rani, the grand daughter, is and Kion did something perfect.. he comforts her.. which makes ME emotional. I dealt with the death of a family member back in 2016, so I know how Rani felt after her grandmother was no longer alive. It is such a beautiful episode

When I was first diving into this show and watching it randomly on Disney Channel, Copycat was one of the first episodes I saw. And I started earlier this year so S3 was already out.

When I first saw the episode "Copycat", I was thinking the same thing too. Like, I thought this whole episode is all going to be about Bluey copying her father's movements but when Bluey noticed the little budgie on the ground and not moving, my perspective of this episode has changed. When Bandit said, "There's nothing we could do, it's out of our hands", I learnt that there are things we can't control and that these things happen. And yes, death is a terrible thing and (I am not sure if I am right here but) death is the natural part of life.

I remember having this conversation with my son. It was rough but I think we got through it well. One of our pet bunnies had died. I explained to my son who was 3 or 4 at the time what dying means. And I had him help me bury the bunny in the backyard. Explained that some people believe there's a heaven that you go to after you die or maybe you get reborn as someone else or maybe nothing happens. We arent sure. And I explained that by burying the bunny his body can become something else like a tree or whatever. He seemed really bothered with the fact that I told him everyone will die eventually and he had tons of questions. Will I die, will grandma die, will he die. I didnt sugar coat it. I said yes but not for a very long time hopefully and we dont need to worry about that. Its good to be honest with kids and keep things at an age appropriate level. Dont lie to them
