Great overview. I am always amazed at just how good the video coming out of Lumix m43 cameras look. I don't have any interest in going back personally, but for a small, compact, just get it done camera, this looks like a complete package.

It all comes down to your personal priorities. If you value AF and shallow DoF more than anything else, then definitely go with something else. If you want high-quality slow-motion, I believe the GH6 has the advantage over everything else for this use. As far as comparing image quality, what most folks completely ignore is that with a M43 system, you can use a lower F-stop to get enough DoF to keep multiple subjects in focus at the same time, and this allows for a lower ISO, and when you compare systems with this in mind, M43 has typically been about equal with FF, and the new GH6 starts to take the lead. Of course, FF sensors will eventually start using the same tech, but not for a few years.
@Alan Tutt you have a point and don't forger that the telezoom lenses are really small and thé compression look nice in IT.
Totally agree about DoF...I actually because I use to film Orchestra concert I need to everthing but a shallow DoF...maybe for thé conductor or Solist but usually everthing schould be in focus on screen...so with mft I don't need to go super high in F T stops which IS great.
Mostly Shooting F4-F5 and Zoom Lens 2.8-4
Completely agree with what you said about DOF and maintaining low ISO values with a relatively closed aperture. Sometimes trying to nail focus at f2.8 on my S5 in manual focus is too much of a hassle (even with focus peaking on), so you’d say, just drop the aperture to something like 5.6. Well at that point I might as well use a M4/3 system with that same aperture equivalent and maintain that lower ISO value.
Well the problem is that even full frame cameras are doing high quality, full sensor width slow motion now too. Panasonic no longer has an advantage in image quality, sensor readout speeds, codecs, size, weight, etc. Their software is still the best IMO, complete with shutter angle, scopes, focusing tools, etc. that other OEMs are not currently implementing on their hybrid cameras... But that's only a software update away from changing.
@@sasca854 I think it comes down to the compromises the full frames have. GH6 seems to have the least of the compromises. It does what full frame can't and does it well. (Currently no full frame camera can record downsampled full width 4k60 without huge sacrifices - maybe z9?). I wish Panasonic brought out something totally new like open gate 6k120p. It just seems too pricey. At this price point, idk if it's worth picking the GH6 over the S5 or A7iv. If the GH6 was maybe $1,800 I think it's a no brainer.

Eyy I didn't know you are based in Toronto! Thanks for the review mate! I been talking to Pana Rep for this camera and he mention similar thing you said about grab and go sorta stuff. He now actually prefers this over S1H too lol. I see your thoughts and process of this camera. Everyone has their purpose of using their camera gear at the end of the day.

I kinda just jumped in the deep end with video/photo as a hobby after securing a S5 at an insane deal, and had already found your stuff around the time you were making a bunch of Mac content. Even if I have zero interest in picking up a new camera anytime soon, your videos often encourage me to go out and take photos/videos around my city and mess around with my camera more - consistently some of my favourite b-roll I've come across on camera focused channels. Good stuff

man, i feel the exact same way about the BMPCC 4k vs my GH5. IQ is great on the BMPCC, but hate every single thing about it. I have so many M43 lenses now and really wished the GH6 would really deliver same shock factor like the GH5, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

I’m torn between this and an S1. Coming from a bmpcc 6k I have no issues not having autofocus but having weather sealing, ibis, compactness and much better rolling shutter (GH6) is a huge win. I have the sigma 18-35 so I would use a booster if I went GH6 but now that the s1 has 6k and more filmmaking updates, I’m curious how much image quality I’m leaving on the table but not going full frame. I’d buy either one used so they’re within a few hundred bucks of each other. I’d include the s5 but I highly value full size hdmi.
Both will be a step down in IQ from the 6K. Full size hdmi is a stupid myth concocted by idiot RUclipsrs.

For the GH6 can you recommend the best lens that is suitable for event videography if budget is no issue?
Did you rotate the Anamorphot horizontally for a reason? I noticed the bokeh was stretched the opposite direction than a traditional Anamorphic lens (i've also had the Anamorphot).
the lens only works horizontally otherwise the flares go vertical or crooked. the bokeh is footballing the right way for an anamorphic lens - but its also not a traditional anamorphic lens, it has its own look. especially the double side flaring.
@@impatrickt In case of the usage of an Anamorphic lens, or adapter, the flaring should not really be considered first though? The added horizontal FOV while retaining a specific focal length is the main point in using one. I just thought id was odd that the bokeh was squeezed vertically, which indicated that it wasn't really mounted "correctly", or traditionally, if you will. @ 0:33
Not hating, just an observation. Still looks cool. The SLR Magic adapters can be cumbersome to use. Have had both the 40-1.33x and 50-1.33x.
@@tenettttt you’re not listening though lol it only mounts one way. The thing wasn’t sideways, upside down, or crooked. The bokeh changes shape depending on your taking lens. Especially if you go under F2 which it’s just not designed for. I find the anamorphot to be the only anamorphic setup I don’t hate using.
@@impatrickt Lol ok. I just remember being able to rotate the adapter freely and lock it in place. That way you could mount it "sideways" if you felt like it for whatever reason. I guess the unorthodox bokeh is due to the lens then. 1.33x is not squeeze enough to create proper oval bokeh anyways. 🙏
@@tenettttt that’s why I push it to f1-f2 and it’s also why the centre loses sharpness. Give and take.

to my knowledge no, because it takes like 10 or 11 photos all at once in a burst. the flash wouldn't keep up. you'd have to use consistent light. side note though the high res images look AWFUL.
@@impatrickt Makes sense, think Olympus cameras have figured out a way to do this but could be wrong! You don't like the High Res shots? Very surprised! Love them in my G9 you can get super creative, like having an ND during the day, where you can blur stuff. But there's definitely some artifacts in a few shots. 🤷
Great Video Patrick. So I’m stuck. I have 2 Canon EOS Rs that live on Sticks for Weddings.
I want a 3rd Camera to run my Center Shot, B-Roll, Slow Motion Detail Shots Video. Use also for Corporate Interviews and such. Would you offer your thoughts… I have Canon EF Glass but between looking at videos of the GH5 with Speedboosters, talks of manual focus and now the GH6 as a person coming in brand new to LUMIX would you say go stray for the GH6 or GH5. I can spend the upgrade amount but if you think the GH5 Caged and buying a lens would be a better investment please give someone lost a line of sensible thought.

I’d grab a Lumix S5 and stay in full frame.
Add a speedbooster and I feel like you aren't missing much. You are looking at a 1.35 crop which is closer to full frame than something like the Pocket 6k. I feel like I'd be content with the S1H/S1 if it had Prores. But Prores +faster readout +DGO +full sensor 60p make me happy.
I have one. I don’t like using speed boosters. It always changes the character of the lens you’re using. I’ve seen so many ProRes side by sides with h265 and there’s literally no reason to shoot ProRes. I’ll take S35 60 over MFT. S35 sensor readout on the S5 is insane fast.
@@impatrickt H264 and H265 don't edit well even on my M1 Mac. Transcoding to prores is a huge hassle for me.
I've never been fond of the crop mode on the S1, just doesn't look as good.

So nice colors on the GH6 and overall image. Love the anamorphic look in general but not with this particular lens. However, bmpcc 4k has to be the best camera under 1500$. If you consider the included Resolve licence, it's under 1k.
what's wrong with the lens - I hate anamorphic lol the P4K is hell to use.
@@impatrickt It is simply the image rendered. The aesthetics of their distortion, this varies from one lens to another.

As a long time Olympus user, Gh5s for a lot of the video work in my studio, just got this as my first personal (to be in my hands) Panasonic. Love the retro cereal commercial.

I've been trying to find s5 footage like this but can't. Are they using the same sensor?
S5 is the S1/S1H full frame sensor. It has more dynamic range than the MFT GH6 sensor. I even think the BGH1 looks a bit better than the GH6.

probably just the ease of using pretty much any lens that exists + the best IBIS in any camera, ever. otherwise I dont see much benefit to MFT.

I had to give the GH6 back but MFT and FD don't play very well together because of the short flange distance. You have to use a special adapter with a glass element and I've always found it super soft (I got it for my P4K). It's not a great setup for MFT.

Canon FD lenses will reach infinity with a glass less adapter on m4/3 cameras. You may need... want... a speedbooster, which has glass, but it isn't necessary.

Kinda torn whether to jump to another system or stay with MFT. Currently using a G7 with an almost complete set of lenses (atleast for me) with focal lengths for certain situations. This kinda gives me the confidence to stay. Haha. Or maybe i’m just lazy to learn another system. 🤣
So I have a question. I wanna shoot music videos and social content for people and I’ve been told about the g7. It’s definitely affordable and I can use more money on lenses to combat what it lacks. This is gonna be my first purchase. Do you have any advice for me. I’m a beginner and I’ve been researching and would love your insight.
@@petertoilolo5253 I would get the G80 instead, it's not much more expensive when bought used, and has a wonderful in body stabilization that is fantastic for handheld use in my opinion.
@@victormosten7516 agree with Victor right here. G80 would be a great option. It’s basically a G7 with IBIS. I actually been thinking of getting one used just to get IBIS. Haha 😁

@@virgilethevoz I dont have any lens. OM1 is smaller system but less bokeh but sony with 4k 60 crop is not that nuch better than new OM1. and sony kit vs OM1 kit are similar too

To be honest I am just going to purchase the Panasonic gh5s and Panasonic S5. Granted I am still hoping for a firmware update where you can get unlimited 4k 10 bit recording in Super 35mm mode on the Panasonic S5

Which camera in your opinion has better low light capability? GH5s or GH6? Do you think there will be a GH6S?
I dont think there will be a gh6s for a while - id say both are fine in low light, neither are great. but I also think low light performance is kind of a mute feature now. if you're lighting your videos any camera will work. if you do nat geo outdoor night work then I understand, but you're better off with anything from Sony.

Gh6 is an interesting beast. I'm probably end up using the 5.7k with dynamic range boost all the time because I don't really use slow motion that much, but having slow Mo that looks as good as the regular frame rates as seen in other reviews is kind of mind blowing. 4k 120 at the same detail as 4k 24 kind of blows the doors off any other camera on the market. As for autofocus, I'm afraid I just don't use it ever. I'm always on cinema lenses, and according to the engineers at Panasonic, it seems like a phase system would impact the image quality too much. Would be interesting to see a side by side image comparison with the Olympus to see if that's true.
thing is the a7siii does all of this without a 2x crop, a much better lens ecosystem (without adapters) and it has class leading autofocus - regardless if you use it or not its something every camera should have now.
ive talked to Panasonic there just wasn't enough time to put phase in this model. its not an IQ concern (it was when the tech was older) - even sony FX line has phase and it's used on everything.

I was talking to a car guy friend about the GH6, as one does. His comment upon hearing a bit about it was “So, it sounds like the Kia/Hyundai of Cameras. A lot of features but some rough spots that go along with the value for dollar”. I think I have kinda settled on that analysis too. I’m already into Japanese Heavy metal, but this one should do fine for a lot of folks.

@@impatrickt Its to be one more than the GH5I. And I'm mostly being snarky, I do think Lumix makes great cameras.
@@impatrickt The point of the GH5II was to update the GH5 with a newer processor and sensor coatings, so better AF and other features could be added. They also addressed some concerns, such as USB powering, improved low light performance, and a few other things. Overall, several desirable improvements for a very low cost of development. I'm sure they knew the GH6 wouldn't be for everyone, and there will be folks who just wanted an improved GH5.
@@alantuttphotography I think it was a peace offering because they delayed the GH6. I'd be pretty cheesed if I bought a GH5II, and now the GH6 does everything it does, and more.

@@impatrickt You are wild... I also use SLR Magic 1.33x Compact 40 and put it vertical on full frame 16:9 to make 4:3 film, this anamorphic adapter actually has the character of Panavision C series, love it !!!

the S5 isn't as good as a SONY. ISO up to about 1200 is okay, it cleans up again at 4000 but its still got some noise to it. the a7iv I cant see noise thats discernible until 5000+.
I wasnt talking about low light when I mentioned the S5. I said dynamic range.

As for low light, Sony might have better noise reduction I suppose.
