Even though I'm in the Chicago area, I am following all these tips myself to ensure my lawn stays green during a severe drought and I am not wasting the water
It is great having someone from the same area helping with actual advice for our climate... I would love to see how you balance your sprinklers. Thanks
Approximately how long are you applying the baby shampoo /water to your lawn? If it’s not timed, If its one sweep, is it at a normal casual stepping speed
I am on secondary water. Got newer sod a few months old. I am watering an hour a day a few days a week. We have hit record breaking Temps for a week straight over 100 degrees. I know I am probably watering more than I should but the screwdriver isn't going down far. It's starting to get better 2 cycles 30 min each on each zone 300 am then 6am. All good info. I may try that baby soap so I don't end up with fungus with heavy watering.
You need to do the cup test to see what moisture is getting to the soil. So you get the proper amount and the roots out of the root mat the sod came on. Baby shampoo will def help and get that process moving in the correct direction for sure! It will help the moisture level get way deeper into your profile, and you can address any hot spots easily .

@@TheGreenerLawn it really depends on where you live in Texas to be honest. So, that is a good recourse, but not worth while for this. Each lawn is going to have good and bad moisture areas that need to be addressed by tactics in this video. Solid recommendation, but for what people are experiencing in their specific lawn, will NOT be helpful at all.
In Utah though we are asked to only water 20 minutes or 40 depending on what sprinkler your using. So, if I have a dry area that needs 80 I'm just not going to be able to do that.
Supplement that area with a hand water, what will use a few gallons (for the extra that is needed to make 1”), vs running thee whole zone, and adding more water where it doesn’t need it. Or consider Hydretain, what will assist with long term soil moisture. And those are twice a weed depending on what heads you have. Pop ups are 20 x 2 times a week, or 40 min x2 a week rotors (there is a lot of diffences in heads/nozzles/ output/ that is why this method is so much more accurate with out excessive water waste)… This is where dialing them in you can see where small spot waters will be needed to supplement this. Would 1 inch of water per week work over here in Ireland in the middle of a draught ? Your video is the best. Thanks. Would the same principal apply in a recently over seeded lawn and when could I switch from three times daily 10 minutes watering to once a week deep watering? Thank you
Yea! Just adjust for rain! Yes, do it slow over time, but yes, slow and steady to allow it to more time. Here is how I have people go from seeing to deep watering: Now how i would recommend you water: First 2 weeks: Daily 8 min a zone 8 am and 4pm (mow days skip the 4pm water) Week 3: 1 x a day 12 min a zone 8 am Week 4: every other day 20 min a zone 8 am Week 5 : 3 times or 2 x a week (and this is where the cup test tells us how much water we need for 1” a week and we break it up evenly over those days) for as long as it takes to get 1”.

Random Q: If I use a sprayer with a higher dose of baby shampoo and spray it before watering (rain/sprinklers), will it help? I imagine the shampoo/surfactant will dry on the grass blades... once watered it'll move down to the soil since the surface tension will let it slide. Not sure how to shampoo ingredients will effect the foliar part of the blades. Hmmm... okay now I want to do a test spot... (Oh, reason: it's a pain to do hose end applications because of the location of my hose bibs. There's a zone I have to connect a 100' hose with a 25' or 50' hose.)
Ohh 💯, just use it combo with rain or sprinklers, all good and well. It will dry but it will also rehydrate and move down into the soil profile. You will not have any damage to your blades, if your of using it with a herbicide. It can cause damage with certain herbicides ran at the same time (no separate).
@@TheGreenerLawn I forgot to tell you how it went. Ironically, it shows very clearly when it doesn't get watered in enough.
