Building For Performance Ep01 - AU SOHC VCT 4L

- Let's begin a series based around making performance upgrades on our N/A 4L Ford. I intend to make this series universal in that you can apply the techniques to any engine whether it be boosted or N/A, this series will encompass both.
To build a great boosted powerplant, you must first make decent power n/a.. Any gains you make will only be multiplied by boost and I will show you this as we progress.
So hit that SUBSCRIBE button and the notifications bell, tell me what you think and would like to see in the comments with this build!
I wonder if you can run a 12 in an n/a SOHC 4L EF falcon?
Thanks to Mitchel Cocks for assisting in the procurement of this gem 😁.
Cheers,
Blake.
Pretty keen for this build! Damn the value of 90s falcons has gone thru the roof! I'd love to find a pretty clean EF/EL XR6 for a cruiser! I wanted an EB or ED but way out of my price range now...
They really have, I missed put on some good cars over the years but always kept my first e series so I am happy and keen to build it.
Keen to see how you go about porting the head.
I've done a few falcon heads with great results. my first one I went all out on and mirror finished inlet and exhaust on an n/a, j3 chip, extractors and 2.5 inch exhaust and it woke up nicely.
Same basic principles as most, I'm no pro "porter" but I'll make gains and they will be free 🙂
Sounds like a nice setup, these things are quite reliable too. I beat the hell out of mine for 100,000km and it rarely missed a beat.
@@GapSauceRUclips I'm no pro porter myself! I just port matched, took most of the ski jump out of the inlet side leading to the valve and smoothed out what the casting sand left behind and that seemed to have a pretty nice impact.
I am told the stock au head is good for 1000hp so a bit of porting should definitely have some benefits.
@Made By Nobody Famous I Don't know what boost levels it would take to get there on a stock head, I'm just relaying what I was told by tunnel Vision and they produce 1500hp sohc engines so I'd assume they know their stuff.
This looks like an interesting project. The XR6 VCT motors were decent jiggers back in the day. Also, the GT's idle is just plain sexy.
Cheers mate, I'm very excited about this one. They can move really well with the right work.
Bloody good idea man, in depth educational videos hook an audience.
Good luck with the project mate.
I'm really looking forward to this 🙂
Nice work mate. Keen to see the build.
Keen to catch up when i move down next month.
Definitely keen mate! Plenty of motorsport to go 'round down here 🙂
Cant wait for the build man 😎 so hyped on this love the passion man ill be waiting ahahhaa 👌
Cheers Noah! I'm definitely passionate about this, it's just about all I think about.. don't tell the Mrs 😅
Can’t wait to see this , right up my alley . There was a guy in the states , you tube hot rod heresy from memory that was building a tough Aussie 4 point 0 sohc for ship loads of boost but hasn’t posted lately , anyway au engine build on the gap menu is terrific.
Hahaha "Gap menu". I'll be sure to serve up all the gapperoni pizza you can eat 😄.
I'm very keen for this one 🙂 infact I just came home this afternoon with another Intech 🤣
I believe these pre barras did have head gasket issues, but im sure they have a better gasket solution by now, looking forward to the build,
EA-EL had issues but AU moved to a multi layer steel headgasket and I haven't had an issue with the metallic items.
Just from owning both long term , had au 16 years , overheated 4 years ago due to water pump failure , driven 4 klm with gauge off chart coolant spraying all over screen , new pump & another 100000klm , no blown gasket plus has been towing heavy regularly for years & idling all day in summer 460000klm & still runs perfect. Bf 3 2008 had 8 years , seen no heavy towing or idling along all day , perfectly maintained with 10 year complete cooling system replacement ( as with all our cars ) never overheated & at just 229000 blown head gasket . Hence just bought another au , needs heaps of work but will never buy another b series , too many other long term general durability issues compared to the mighty au .
Keen!! Love my 2 ef falcons
They are awesome cars!
Can't wait for this build 👍👍
I'm very keen!
i look forward to it.ba look's great by the way.go the fords.
Cheers Darrel 💪
keen to see the project develop
Me too Dan 🙂
just saw the intake in the photo and hell yeah!! intech powa!
Lets see if we can improve on the absolute pinnacle of engineering Intech 4-point-0.
@@GapSauceRUclips i hope so! then i can copy you on my au xr6!
Bang bang Boom, Gap Sauce does it again! Just at the same time as i've been considering giving my very own ef a birthday. Will be interested to see why you chose a vct engine for an na build.... 👍
Haha I read alot about how it's difficult to make it work with a cam. But I'm sure I can find a way. VCT is a huge advantage if made to work correctly.
@@GapSauceRUclips interesting! I've always wanted to fit the vct engine to my car! But I'd always thought it wasn't able to run with an upgraded cam.... "Even though it's do-able with a barra" (shrugs shoulders) I'll be following this with much interest 👌
@@justin3131ify The only thing I can see being an issue is piston to valve clearance so I'll be happy of I can limit the travel to a safe level of adv/retard. I'll get around it somehow 😅
Keen to see how this turns out
Put some David Vizard principals to work 😜
He's a wizard! There's a few others too.
I always thought the VCT was harder to extract power from than the high HP motors? Or adding a decent cam was a nightmare? Will be watching this keenly, good luck mate, I'm guessing your out my way, Ipswich?
I remember reading about Jim Mock having issues with it back in the day, but I'm sure I can limit the travel if need to, we shall see. If not I'll lock it and it will work.
And yes, hopefully see you out at the track sometime 🙂
Can't wait I've got a Intech in a ED wagon 😊
Hell yeah, head is ported and off at the machine shop then its tine for assembly 😁
@@GapSauceRUclips can't wait also in your discretion some of the Amazon items don't appear such as vernier caliper and the Soft wire brush use for the dermal
Ahh yes, I'll have to update those. Thanks 🙂
@@GapSauceRUclips thanks just so I get the correct ones also have u already ported the head my ED wagon got a AU intech it's not tickford but should be same ay
@@nickprostizenovski6948 Yes I have ported it, there are some pics on my instagram. The AU head is probably a better starting point, but the ED port is a little larger out of the box.
Spicy sohc............
Love the idle porn at the end 🤣👌🇦🇺
It will be reasonably spicy 🙂
Yeah, gotta give the people what they want 😁
@@GapSauceRUclips damn straight ✊
👍
Ooohhhh....so we have to run right? 😂😆😆
Definitely keen, it will need alot of work to keep up with your beast though!
@@GapSauceRUclips I have it booked next month for more exhaust work. May end up with a true dual system.
@@SouthernCrossMotors ooh, I'm interested in seeing the proposed changes! Did you make it to the Street series tonight?
When’s the update video
Once the final machining is done. It's at the shop now. Last thing I'm waiting on.
So did this ever happen?
I have all the parts, head needs porting finished and assembly. Had a break ready for 2023, I have a few projects on the go and would like to have more complete and quality videos when I upload them.
@@GapSauceRUclips awesome so there is hope for the VCT after all 😂
@@jaydonhoward2839 There certainly is, doing it right takes time. I just have a 2 5.4s, a 253 and a 4L to build simultaneously 😅 The port development takes a long time, back and forth on the flowbench.
