- Make sure you check the question out at the end of the video guys and girls!
I'm keen to get this fully pulled down and ready for the planning phase. Stay tuned for a closer look at each group of parts in future episodes.
Like and Subscribe, hit the notifications bell and I will see you next time.
Cheers,
Blake.
Ps. I am not a professional engine builder, but I will help you learn and discuss the principles of power, enjoy.
Great to see you legends participating! 😁 Thanks for coming and having a go! 🙌 I'll talk about the answers in the next episode and ask a new question.
Also, this was filmed in 30FPS, but RUclips decided to upload it at 10FPS, hence the jittery footage at times. 🙃
Blake.
Richard Holdener has lots of awesome videos and live streams explaining the answer 👌
@@tturi2 the ford 5.4/ 4.6 episode he did with the boss intake 👍🏼
I say longer runners
@@tturi2 He does, we will try to go a little more in depth 🙂
The answer to your question is in the inlet manifold?
Good engine to pull apart and put back together for practice, I love playing with them
Great series Blake. Looking forward to watching it.
The very short answer to the final question is that short, wide inlet runners move the torque curve up the rev range whereas long, narrow runners move the curve down the rev range. BUT - there is a whole lot more to it than that. The effect is caused by 'pulse waves', waves of relatively high and low pressure in the runner.
P.s I have no idea what that means. Great question though.
#2FGX3 🤙
MORE SOHC CONTENT PLEASE!!!!!
I have plenty filmed, just need to edit! stay tuned.
@@GapSauceRUclips still waiting mate
Thanks bro I'm thinking of rebuilding a intech but have never done it so I'll be getting schooled by you through your awsome vids.
Awesome mate, better get a move on then!
i haven't read anyone else's comment but my uneducated guess would be shorter.this look's to be a very interesting series.screaming falcon sixes.HELL YEAH.
Yeah, how good! Love the SOHC! ❤
Short runners for high rpm power. More importantly I would've thought with guns like yours you would've taken the head bolts out with ya fingers!! 🤣, will be watching this series keenly as I'd love to do an intech build myself, thanks for the vids man!!
🤣 I wish, they were I there tight!
good videos sold the fg xr6t and got a au intech love the sound of sohc more will be turbo in time
Hell yeah! I'm busy putting parts together in the background, cant wait to get this going! Mine used to turbo actually, easy power.
Hey mate love the series iv watched all your cammed gt videos can't beat the sound of a 5.4 ltr. I just purchased a really clean el s pack falcon and these videos will be great cheers
Awesome mate! Just waiting on machining now and she will be back for more videos! Thanks for the kind words 😁
Short runners for HIGH rpm but you will suffer a drop off in the low end torque
super keen fir this build. ill be following along as we are building a NA barra at the shop for abit of fun but i want a high rpm screamer for something diffrent rather then the typical bolt a china boi on and call it a day.
Hell yeah, I'd love to do an n/a barra too at some point. Just need a light car to put it in 😅.
@@GapSauceRUclips ta22 celica would be great, would need tunnel work for it to fit tho
@@anthonypllu3864 According to my recent tailshaft failure, I'm pretty good at tunnel work 🤣
Love the tickford intech I blew my original xh tickford engine up doing a huge burn out blew the head gasket and dropped a rod the Ute is the series one xr6 T5 manual Ute running the 3.45.1 lsd diff on flipped leafs it’s really fun to hoon around in only has a mild cam and 4480 with open exhaust system guts out of the cat sounds really deep and so good around the limi rev range and as for your question I’ve found the Broadband intake on my Ute ok but for the higher revs the old log manifold seem better my Ute is cool and fairly quick off the mark I’m flowing you now and subscribed i’m interested to see what you’re doing with that engine
Short answer is short. Other than bearing size and stroke it's the reason people opt for a 302 Windsor over a 351 Windsor for track work! Oh and the weight of course.
Short runner, however runner length should be optimised for the selected rpm range of the engine.
Like your work mate, I have just subscribed. I too will be rebuilding an intech motor for boost.
Thanks mate, let me know how you go! 🙂
I believe back in the day, Chrysler had a manifold i think it was called the Cross Ram, big$$ to find now, however as everyone else is saying it would bomb out @ higher rpm, want it short.
Love watching your videos mate! I have been tossing up for years what to do with my XD. Was going to do a nice clevo build but decided to turbo the cross flow instead! Super keen to get it finished!
I've been in the same boat with this EF, I've had a 351C slow build going and I'll keep it for now, it may find its way into something else. XD's are quite desirable now, super cool to see xflow's still being used!
@@GapSauceRUclips most people bin them but they are actually quite underrated. with a decent head and the right cam and a few other little bits and slap a turbo on, it’s not hard to get 400+ rwhp out of them.
My brothers NA cross flow makes 300+ at the rears. Goes well!. It’s great seeing you use the intech! Most people bin them for a barra! But I personally think they are a better engine!
@@xdesp3516 400 will be a breeze with boost, I've seen some really quick 250's before too.
Gonna guess at shorter based on other vids ive watched 🤔 Also from v8 supercar setups. Dunno why though, but I'll have a guess. Is it to do with less resistance for air draw under hi rpm allowing maximum amount of "air" to be pulled into cylinder during intake stroke.
More air more fuel. More hp.
Dont ya love the coil pack location.. having flashbacks to when i changed leads on my old ef.
Cryogenically treating binds the internal structure of metals tight then bringing back to room temperature over 48hrs gradually helps it spread evenly like chicken mesh for an example opposed to just random clumps and gaps where the gap parts are usually the weak points where it may crack seen reported test and research from different sources under microscopes and pressure tests conducted.
Thats a great explanation and analogy too. I have ended up with some nice oversized intake valves but will concentrate on valve control as I believe this is the main cause of broken valvetrain and especially rocker arms, other than two step on the exhaust side. I'd prefer to to have to make billet arms if possible.
Loving it!
3rd lol
good to see you upload mate i love your Blue beast
Awesome video subscribed keen
Cheers mate, glad to have e you on board 🙂
Bit off topic but I've looked online and can't find what I need and thought some Ford fan here might know.
Is there any info online about modding BOSS260 heads for BOSS290 valves and cam options
And/or
Can Boss290 heads be bolted to a Boss260?
Thanks 👍
Hey mate, you can outfit the 260 heads with 290 valves with some slight modifications to a few components and yes, 290 heads will bolt on 🙂
Once I do it myself and can 100% confirm what needs to be done I'll make a video about it.
@@GapSauceRUclips thanks for the info 👍
I love my 5.4 but compared to my old LS there is relatively little online
Short for high rpm power. Longer for more torque at lower mid range revs. At least that is my understanding.
Watched this video now hsve a ed engine lined up to rebuild myself running to but only getting engine from wrecked ed then going to look at dropping it into a vs wagon in few years time once I’ve slowly got everything for the conversion etc
That's why Ford made that a variable intake, quick answer is short for top end, longer for better mid range torque.
Thanks mate! Good answer!
Nice video man I subscribed! I have an ef with au vct in it✌
Cheers! The VCT's go pretty well with basic mods, nice!
@@GapSauceRUclips im considering getting a 4480 pacemaker high-flow cat and a redback exhaust but I am very tempted in turboing it as I have a venom body kit on it! Been loving this car
@@201crunt6 Nice, I do like the 4480's. I've used the Jim Mock Big pipes too, they didn't sound quite as nice though.
really digged the tear down
All that torque you put into get those head bolts loose... fark 😄
They were so tight, busted two 14mm sockets 😅 Glad you enjoyed it, it feels like Xmas morning as a kid to me when I'm tearing an engine down.
@@GapSauceRUclips surprised the bolts didnt break off in the block,
yeh man love it 👍🏼
The only way your going to get a 4.0 to make power is improve the lungs and scavenging effect from a decent pair of headers . Including AU BA BF
Here is the list
Fg Intake with adapter plate for the AU
Cam approx 224 duration at 50 on 114 450 lift
The cam needs around .040" -.050" at tdc on overlap in and exh
Custom header 1 3/4 primary
2 1/4 secondary
3" collector and exhaust
Revised ignition map needs 8 - 10 ° more than standard across whole curb easy fix is to use off set keyway on crank or make a bracket to move crank trigger forward bolt on custom trigger wheel on the front of crank need ef el balancer to do this .
Plum in another injector near throttlebody to turn on at around 4800rpm this is where the original start to lean out set to 70% duty cycle up till 5600 then 100% till 6200 . If you've done it right you'll be making 320 hp at the treads . Dude, Teachers don't use Chrome sockets to remove headbolts , just saying.
You should check out my last upload, most of what you are talking about can be achieved with a simple tune. Standard injectors are fine for the power you are making.
320whp is well outside the realms of a stock AU long block, as much as I wish it wasn't. Unfortunately lending my tools out means I need to use unfavourable sockets from time to time, it happens 🤷♂️ Thankfully I've been down the SOHC road before, should be alot of fun documenting it for everyone this time 🙂
Shorter intake runner length which has better torque hp at higher rpm
I own 40 ohc that makes 390hp at the block a mate of mine built it and done a whole lot of R&D race it in a saloon drit track car broke it a couple of times and worked out really weak spots are it’s a au bottom with a ea head apparently the engine builder started with au head did not like the rocker system and changed to ea for better valve control it’s 12to 1 comp custom intake to suit carburettor and port job custom rods and piston from the states
Sounds absolutely bonkers I found his old race car so I’m slowly putting it back together yet to drive it but will happen one-day
second
Why did it have a red rocker cover ? I know now , it’s a tickford , I thought the xr6 had 2 throttle bodies
It does not change the overlap on vct on a sohc setup. Only dohc can do that.
Absolutely correct. I'm working on a limiter to retain at least some of the vct with a large cam.
I feared one of those head bolts letting go or socket slipping & you punching yourself square in the face. Ouch! Shorter runners for high rpm power, but sacrifice torque.
I've got an EF with an intech ef in the EF block gos dam well
Definitely an upgrade for n/a 🙂 I'm using an EF Head, finished the port development. Just need to finish the other ports now and install and edit the vid
Hey mate are you pushing ahead with the build?
Certainly am, just had a very busy last half of the year. I'd prefer to do it properly and have good content so videos will take a while but be better to watch 🙂
@@GapSauceRUclips stoked to hear this, agree with the approach. Thanks mate 👍
I'm building aother eb 4ltr rebuildin it then cam race bearings ect
Awesome mate! I can't wait to do my cam test, I have 3 custom cams on the way 😁
#1 Moates quaterhorse.
Potentially, I've always run j3. I'll weigh up a barra ecu and some aftermarket units. And see what's going to suit my needs. I'll be running 20+ psi if all goes to plan
5:37 How do you know they snap quite easily I wonder? :P
You gotta snap bolts to know how tight is too tight right? 😅 Seriously though, use a torque wrench haha
Short.
Isn’t that why the intake manifolds had the butterfly valve that would open and close to make the intake runner length go from long to short?
Short for high rpm yes, and yeah that was the variable inlet design 🙂
@@GapSauceRUclips i think it opened around 3800rpm from memory. Love the channel. Cheers
@@zacsborntorunrunningadvent3441 Thats correct, thanks for watching mate!
what's happening with the intech mate no more vids as of yet pretty keen to see what you do with it :)
Hey mate, I have a lot of footage to get through. There has been a lot going on in the background over the last few months. Engine is out and prepping for bay paint and the new motor to go in.. Waiting on parts and machinist, I promise it's worth the wait!
@@GapSauceRUclips yea nice mate i just finished my au bottom end ef top end cammed na 6 cant wait to see what you got in store ;)
@@GapSauceRUclips just discovered you, great content . I have a question for you. Would a AU 2 Tickford duel fuel motor have any good bits inside , similar to green top Barras ,ie better rods , better valves . really keen to know
@@antonyfrost2541 I don't believe so mate, Ford seems to be a lucky dip, can never know until you pull it down. As long as it hasn't run hot, should be just as good of a starting point though.
First
Haha, getting in quick! 💪
Side note. How duckinh good are cordless ratchets 😂
They are so good, it's actually my mate Chops' one haha
#sohctheworld
How much more power roughly with a massive port and polish ?
Really depends on how far you go and what you're willing to spend and if you want it to drive nicely. I'd like to see this one around the 200kw mark eventually, then add a supercharger.
@@GapSauceRUclips that would be perfect 200 kw , would like to have good fuel economy, but when I want to be silly have that power to do it . Little Supercharger would be good if it could be hidden under the stock bonnet
Mine made 164kw at 5500 at the wheels just a cam standard motor , ran out of intake
The stock head is pretty much done there too, good power for cam only👍
In episode 1 you had a vct engine and in episode 2 you’ve got a non vct engine what happened? Two separate builds?
I have them both pulled down, I found some rust on the bore unfortunately. For what I'm doing I won't be using the VCT head anyway. All will be explained in future eps 🙂
Short
Short is always best, like me 😜🤣
