In this video, I give an overview of Dendrobiums and share with you how I grow them in Southwest Florida. I also show you how easy they are to grow and propagate!
I enjoyed watching you sit under a shade tree and talk about one of the nicest orchids to grow. I took all of my noids and tied them to our Robellini palms in our backyard. We have pops of color all over the place. It's always fun to see what color is coming up next. I have my Den. Nobiles and Den. kingianum, and recent purchased Den. Iasiantheras under my screened patio. It's going to be a very long hot and humid summer.
Thanks for your comment - it was still so hot, even though I was in the shade. As long as the orchids are happy, I guess that I am happy too. It does sound like you know your Dens!
Thanks for the nice video... several years ago I did an experiment with a broken dendrobium cane... I sectioned/cut each node leaving about an inch on either side of the node... let the cut edges harden off for a couple days, then placed them in a plastic container with sphagnum moss(you could try the burlap) and let them sit for several months...most of the nodes made keikies...
That is so cool - It is so humid here that I do not need to put them in a bag! I just used the whole cane - have not tried to cut that into small pieces. Thanks for the comment!😁
Just finished watching! And what a coincidence! I just chopped up a Dendrobium I Indonesia Raya Blue that was gifted to me because it's not growing that nice and didn't even grow for a month now since i got it last month, unlike the others I got. So I decided to chop it up so I can grow it from the start, with the hopes that the new keikis that'll grow will be much more resilient since it'll develop in this climate or environment that I have! Also I do you have a twitter or X account I can follow? hehe Would love to follow you if you have one! 🤗 Also just received my second Dendrobium Nopporn Green Star "3-lip mutation" because I really love it and I'd like to grow many of these, hence the second order now hehe
Thanks for watching and for your comment. Sorry but I do not use other social media - I need to expand but I am pretty busy with just RUclips. I will likely add a members component to my channel where I share more information. I am in the final stages of setting that up. I do find that I can make many more plants of everything than I need. The problem then becomes what to do with them...??...
Hey John! I’m really starting to ❤ dens. I love orchids that grow fast and huge. And they bloom a lot for especially in South Florida. They love it here and it shows. I’d love to experiment and attach them more to me trees. Thanks for this video!!
I so love your videos and glad I fell upon your channel today searching how to propagate den kaekes I am loving the baby kaekes that are growing off of the denobrium stems that I have laying in spaghnum moss! We purchased 2 den plants at the Bonnet House Orchid show in Ft Lauderdale last Spring and they did not do well for me at all… I continued to water them over the winter but read that you should stop watering them? I found that torturous for me lol but at any rate, I googled and googled and googled and read about spagh and bag, and it’s really been working for me with just the stems of the dens!! I’m so excited and so happy I found your channel! Thank you! Ive never been good with orchids but I refuse to give up!
Thanks for watching and for your comment. Most new orchid growers kill their orchids with too much love (water). They bury the roots like other plants and do not let them air out between watering. As I hope you saw on the video, many of my dens do well with the roots just clinging onto the trees or piece of wood that they are mounted to. If you put them in pots, make sure that there is a lot of air in the pot - you can use bark or stone or something course with big air spaces. Oh, I have killed my share of orchids - just lost a great plant this past week - it happens. You just need to try another one and see if it likes you as much as you like it. Good luck, be patient with your orchids, and keep on watching!!
Did you give up on Dens? They are a little difficult to give up on because they just keep on growing regardless of how you treat them. For many of my orchids, I have to fight to keep them alive (and I lose a lot of those fights). With Dens, they just keep on going......
@@plantpropagator well, we had gotten a Den. Green Surprise a couple years ago and was advised they could handle cold temps. we threw it onto the balcony and left it all winter...in spring it bloomed and then all the canes died. so we never bought another one cause we don't have that much room inside!
@@plantpropagator hahah, yes, your collection is quite large....and wait till you get all those flasks out! but that probly means you also have room INSIDE for another phal or 2 ;)
I think we can easily say dendrobiums are the easiest of all genera of orchids to care for! At least for me under the conditions and weather in my area, southeastern Brazil. I only have a few of them, and they are all species dens, no hybrids. I do have a few finicky dendrobium species, though, like D. Sulcattum, which looks awesome but can't handle being repotted in the wrong time of year, or it will refuse to shoot new roots and may eventually just die from an untimely change of pots!
I do think that most plants are easy to grow, once you know how to grow them. Someone recently provided seed to me of Den. sanderae so I will have a ton of plants of that pretty soon. They are growing in flasks like crazy. Thanks for your comment!

Thanks and this is the video I needed. My dens are doing great but didn't know what to do. Now I do.
Thanks for your comment and I am happy to help. But, I am not sure what I said to assist you.... I am glad that your dens are doing well.
@@plantpropagator I wasn't sure what to do with the keikis. Now I do. That's how you helped. Cheers
@@michaeldornan7737 OK - most people are impatient in taking the Keikis off....

Hey Melissa! The Dens really do grow quickly here. I guess that I need to filter my likes because I do not have as much room as you do!!!
