  • In this video, I show different ways that I grow Phalaenopsis orchids, from pots to mounting to placing them in shells from the beach down the road. I also show how I divide a Phal, that was unfortunately left out in the sun, the day before this video was made.

8 years in the pot!! Wow!
I would love to repot every 8 years, sadly my Midwest moisture retentive potting mix degrades too fast.
Those burlap phals are looking nice!

The organic material was degraded completely. The LECA and lava stone was still intact. Things degrade really fast here. Yeah - the burlap Phals are doing great. Some of them on the trees will bloom this year, I think….

how do i know when a phalaenopsis needs a bigger pot? i have had this one phalaenopsis for about a year. mine is in a window, just stopped blooming (bloomed from feb to early may!) and now its growing new spikes and new leaves like crazy. its got a stack of about 6 large leaves on each side in a 6 inch pot. ive never had an orchid grow so fast and so big but now the leaves are so big and heavy theyre kinda flopping over the edges of the pot. what do you think? ps love your videos as always

Thanks so much for your comment. At a local orchid meeting I attended, a Phalaenopsis expert was asked how you can tell when your Phal needs to go into a bigger pot - he said "look at it - this pot is too small for this plant". That was no help at all. Orchids usually are not in pots in nature - some of mine have crawled out of their pot so much that the pot is covered by roots. When this happens, many people do not remove the old pot - they just dump the whole thing in a larger pot. I have one plant that was gifted to me where I cannot tell if there is a pot underneath the roots. So, move it when you feel that it will look better in a larger pot. Sorry - I was no help either....😁

Did not know you can separate a basal kieki from the main plant.

You just have to make sure that you get roots in both pieces when you separate. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for that information. I just did a search on this and found that you can say it either way. I did not realize that this was an issue.....🙂.
