Easy Crochet Chunky Beanie

- I designed this extra squishy hat especially for super bulky weight yarns. It makes a great market prep hat because it uses very little yardage and works up in under an hour. The use of stitches in the back loop only cause the hat to have a tremendous amount of stretch, making it fit a large variety of heads. It has been a best-seller for my vendor markets, and I hope you have the same success!

Supplies needed:
-At least 81 yds of any brand size 6 super chunky yarn (I recommend using Lion Brand’s Hometown USA or Wool Ease Thick and Quick for these hats. You could also use 3 strands of worsted weight #4 yarn held together for this hat, but be sure you crochet more loosely or go up to a size 10.0 mm hook size. It tends to be a tighter fit. This technique has been great for those who wanted team colors in this hat.)
If you need supplies it would help me greatly if you used my affiliate links below.

-An N sized 9.0 mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge: amzn.to/2CYyyzR
-Hair elastic (Optional. I use the thicker Goody Ouch less brand) amzn.to/2D3VfTl
-scissors amzn.to/3eUlvxp
-tape measure amzn.to/3eSUjzl
- yarn needle amzn.to/3goqVB1
-Any embellishments you would like

Gauge: Hat should measure 6” (15 cm) in diameter after completing rounds 1-3. Gauge is approximate.
Finished Measurements:
Finished hat should measured approximately 21”-24” (53-61 cm) in circumference and 9” 23 cm) in length. The circumference has a wide range due to the stitches being placed in the back loops only.

This is a great tutorial. You are a good teacher. I like that there's no annoying music in the background. I'm learning to love working with bulky wt. yarn.
Thank you! ❤️
Your directions are so clear and very easy to follow. I made this hat in 2 hrs following you step by step. I had my doubts that it would be big enough, but was surprised to find it had so much stretch.
LOVE this hat! Super quick and easy to make. Thank you for the great suggestion on pom buttons!
This is super easy pattern, made it while watching your tutorial. BIG thanks to YOU, as I'll be making this hat for family and friends. What a great gift that can be made in less than an hour. Yay!!!
This pattern & color way is stunning. Thanks SOOO much for sharing!
Love the hat done in this video. Love the stitch used for them. Great teaching on the making of them. Lovely share.
Thank you!
Ur instructions are clear .. precise which makes it very easy to follow.. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽❤️❤️❤️
WOW, that was quick! Also beautiful! LOVE the texture! It doesn’t look like it’s that easy. Thank you
Turned out lovely. Thank you for a very clear tutorial. 😍
This is by far my FAVORITE pattern!! Very easy to follow and quick to work up! I read your pattern online and saw that this is a great option for market prep and I can 100% agree! I'm trying to start my own shop but I am terrible at creating patterns, so, this one has been great for me. I just want to thank you for sharing this with us and I will definitely give credit where it is due and will update you with the success of this beanie 🥰 Thank you so so so much!!
You have made me smile from ear to ear! Thank you so much for taking the time to give me such kind feedback ❤️ It really makes my day! 😘 Good luck selling them! I hope you sell tons🙏🏻
Great tutorial! I just finished this hat and it turned out great. Super easy & I will be making more. Thanks for sharing!
Oh wow, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I didn’t realize what the button was for till the end, love it!! I usually just sew my Pom poms right on my hats. Thank you!
You are welcome! It’s my favorite method to use☺️
This is the easiest and best just how I have ever crocheted. I have never worked a crochet hat that is easier than this pattern. Thank you so much. I truly did take just about 45 minutes to make it start to finish. Again thank you.
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it☺️
I just made this and it was so fast and easy! Subscribed and look forward to trying some more of your tutorials. Thanks!
Thanks; it's hard to find cute patterns for super-bulky yarn. You're a great teacher. God bless...
Thank you! I have several hat patterns that use super bulky weight yarn because it’s my favorite yarn for hats 🤗
I watched this right in the middle of making hats for HatNotHate and am starting this one next. Love it! Thanks
How awesome!! That’s s great idea!
Thanks for this delightful pattern -- and for making this beanie a joy to make!! Very easy & only took a couple of hours to make!! 😀💗
You are so welcome!
I LOVE, LOVE my new hat❤️😍 This is so pretty and fun to make! You even taught an old dog a new trick with that invisible join! 😊 Will be making more for gifts. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your abundant talent!
Invisible joins are the BEST, aren’t they!
I just made it. Lovely design. Thank you for sharing.
Great tutorial! I found you today and made this hat. Easy and quick! Just what I was looking for! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I was able to follow it & understand and I love the pattern. I'm making several of these as Christmas gifts. After the first one that I made, I did make a couple of changes at the beginning as I am not adding pom-poms & wanted to make the hole at the top smaller. I really appreciate how well you explained & showed how to make this
I’m going to start this hat pattern using the magic circle. I don’t want to make or buy a Pom Pom.
I LOVE this pattern!!! It is easier to follow than I thought it would be! I am so excited to complete it! Thank you so much for sharing!
Thank you! I'm so glad you like it❤️❤️❤️
I was just sent a picture of this by my daughter in law, and asked if I could make it lol. Thanks xx
Amazing. Super pretty and fast, love it
I just made this hat (it's super fast) and I love it!! 💕 Thank you so much! Great tutorial!
Wonderful! I’m glad to hear it🤗
Omg...you voice is so soothing. I love this hat and can't wait to make it....
Irene OConnell thank you! I’m glad you like it🤗
Great hat pattern! The hats come out thick, stretchy, and warm! Just finished my 2nd hat, and I just want to keep going!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your pattern. I'm making for my girls
all your hats come out so nice and u have a lot of nice finishing tips to so thanks.
Thank you so much for your kind feedback! It made my day❤️
You are a wonderful teacher thank you so much !!! This will be my next project
Rhonda Hoeft thank you! ❤️
I'm anxious to try this! Thank you 🙏
Love this pattern! Thanks for sharing it.
Thank you!
Love this pattern! Thank you so very much
I’m so glad you like it!
I'm making my second one. Used Navajo chaining for the first out of worsted. It came out great. Thanks for the great tutorial.
You’re welcome! I’m so glad you like it!
I made it and am so happy with the result i only changed just a bit in the brim but the pattern is amazing and so quick
Great!! I am glad to hear it 🤗
I used an 8mm hook and it made the perfect child size hat. Now making an adult hat. Thank u!
Thank you for sharing this! Love when i land on a good comment like this!
I used an 8Mm hook too but I then added one more row of increases. Kept me from buying another hook.
your explanations and your camera placement are perfect. I love the hat also. I donate a lot of hats and it's very cold here so this will be great. I also have a LOT of Hometown yarn that I didn't know what to do with but I do now...thank you so much
Thank you so much for your kind feedback ❤️ I’m sure your hats will be greatly appreciated by those who are blessed with them☺️
Thank you for sharing this fantastic video. I have just made this hat and it is a lovely fit and design.😊👍
Thank you! I’m so glad you like it 😊
Will definitely try this. Thanks!
Love this! Very clever about placing a piece of ribbon on the Pom Pom elastic 😊
I’ve actually gotten lazier and smarter since this video😂 I now tie a piece if yarn around it that’s about 5-6" long and knot the ends together near the bottom. Then the knot/yarn is easier to grab and pull through the top of the hat than a short piece of ribbon.
I really love this pattern. I have made one adult and one baby hat to donate.
I made this twice. The first one has a couple of places where I didn’t stay aligned correctly but I finished it anyway. Instructions are very good.
Awesome job. Beautiful hat. I love it
Thank you!
I lost my favorite hat and decided it was time to make a new one. This time I wanted something warm, squishy, and looked good with or without a pompom. This hat is it! I love it! I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. I added one extra row before the brim because I have a tall head and want to cover my ears, and then instead of the BLO SC I used 3 rows of hdc in the 3rd loop for the brim because I really like the way it looks. It turned out great. The instructions were easy to follow and I love my new hat! Next time I'll use less fuzzy yarn so the stitch definition stands out even more!
This was so cute, but a little small for my head (22”). It will make a nice gift! Thank you.
My first one was tight on my head as well - I really loosened up my stitches starting round 3 and it made a huge difference for my second hat
I made a hat last night and it turned out super cute! I found a couple mistakes but that comes with the territory of being a new to making hats. This was my first attempt, I will definitely make more. Thanks for sharing!
Absolutely! I am glad you were able to make one ❤️
Beautiful!
Thanks for this!! I think it’s a variation of the Waffle stitch. So excited to see how it turns out. Currently on round 3 😊
Mackenzie A. Shepard I’ve never used the waffle stitch. I’m intrigued! I’m glad you like it☺️
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I finally made a hat successfully!!!!
Yay! I’m so glad👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Made one for my father!. Thsnk you!
Awesome video! Learned how to apply a pom pom with that elastic! Thank you!
You’re welcome, thank you!
What size hook did you use?
Great tutorial, this hat works up nicely.👌 I love the textured look.💜
Thank you!
Made it, thanks! It was small for my head so next time I will do one more increase.
You could also make more brim rounds☺️
Just made this hat as a gift for my sister in law.. I will be making more just like it🥰
Wonderful! I hope she loves it☺️
Thank you for such a great tutorial! I've never had luck with making beanies and this is the first time I made one that turned out perfect❤❤ Side note: I was thrilled to see a professional use what appears to be bobby pins bc that's what I use too😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 🥰
Love this ❤️ your voice is so soothing lol
Thank you! I’m glad it’s not annoying 😂
I like a quick bulky hat. There is so much difference between some bigger bulky 6 and 5's. I like Lionbrand thick and quick.
Adding the button inside to hold the Pom Pom was so ingenious!!!
Thank you! I don’t like the floppy pom poms that result from snaps so it made the most sense😁
I love, love this pattern. I made 2 today for donating.
Thank you! I’m so glad you like it😊
Making another one today. I work with the elderly and I showed them the finished hat yesterday. We are going to make it with them next week in our crochet club. Thank you for sharing.
@@destresswithyoga how awesome!! Thank you for sharing ❤️
That is a wonderful idea.
Is there a link for the pom pom please? Excellent tutorial, I used a 5 weight doing an extra round of increases and 3 extra rounds of brim so I could turn it up so it was double. Perfect!
christine persson I bought the pom pom on Amazon in an assortment bag: www.amazon.com/dp/B07X8G5NR7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_btf_t1_XoAGFbCZC3KA4
I absolutely love this tutorial and can’t wait to try!! I’ve been crocheting for a while but I’m still not super fluent, if I wanted to use 2 colors for this hat where should I switch yarns?
You could just switch colors every round. That would be pretty. Or you could carry both yarns throughout the entire hat and switch colors for your post stitches. Does that make sense?
Nice
Subscribed
😊😊😊
Thank you so much for the tutorial! Beautiful hat! I am making one for myself! If I made the brim a bit wider in order for it to fold over (I really like a fold over brim) would it be too thick when I folded it over? Would I have to make the hat shorter before adding the brim?
I honestly don’t know but I suspect it might be a bit too thick
do u start the second row in the stitch u ss in or the one after
how would one turn this into a toddler beanie? how many stitches in the first round?
This was so fun and fast! But my lines look more twisted than your photo. I'll have to play around and see what happened.
Mine is spiraled, I just flatten the hat for the best photo. 🤗
Does the brim stretch out after wearing like so many others?
So adorable making it now. I love the little tag in front where do you get them...
Thank you! I got them on Etsy from All This Wood
@@DaysCrochet I have made so many of these hats and a few other ones also...this is my favorite...they are going to make great Christmas gifts. Your tutorials are great so easy to follow.
I love your patterns and your videos are the best to follow along! I want to order some custom leather tags. I've made my own and tried using the Cricut to make some and I think I just want to not mess with it. Would you mind sharing who you use? (I saw the link for the pom buttons but not for the tags)
Thank you for all your wonderful patterns!
Thank you! I order my tags from All This Wood on Etsy. They are AWESOME!
@@DaysCrochet excellent. Thank you so much! There are so many to choose from, it's overwhelming. It'll be good to order from someone thats recommended.
Happy crocheting! 🧡
Does the brim stretch out after wearing over time?
Well I made one after having to frog it multiple times. Lol. My daughter said she loves it. I used hometown by lions brand yarn in color aspen tweed and you do have to buy 2 of them. I hope.my friend loves it . What yarn and color did you use to make the one pictured for the video because I absolutely love the colors. Thank you so much for sharing your craft and talent with us.
I’m so glad you love it! The color I used in the video is called Moonlight and the one pictured in the thumbnail is called Fossil (I believe)
This pattern is so beautiful! I am wondering if it would work as a slouchy hat if I add some extra rows and skip the pompom?
It should, yes☺️
@@DaysCrochetthank you for such a fast reply! I can’t wait to try this out.
hey i havent crochet for awhile i was able to finish until round 3, the thing is when i check the diameter its only 5 inches, do i have to start again?
I would start over with a larger hook size
What size hook? My yarn label says L. Lion Brand Hometown yarn, size 6 extra bulky.
All supplies are listed in the description box below the video. Click the tiny down arrow to the bottom right of the video. I personally used a 9.0 mm hook, but I would go up a hook size if you don’t have the 9.0 mm.
If I did a magic circle would I start with 9 inside the circle?
The magic circle would replace the ch-9 ring. So you would still keep round 1 as 18 dc.
A very nice tutorial. Soft spoken with use of proper language. I find some people speak using a lot of "okay's and "great's". Those words are so annoying. Thank you for sharing with us.
hi, i only got 5 inches to start, what should i do. increase another round to get to 6 inches?
I would recommend going up a hook size or 2 instead of trying to change the pattern.
Is there a written pattern I can follow? This hats amazing and I've made it twice, my family loves it haha i still need the instructions though for the third hat.
There is a written pattern on my blog, Etsy, and Ravelry. Here’s the blog link and the Etsy and Ravelry links are in the blog post near the top: daysck.com/crochet-for-days/chunky-spiral-crochet-beanie
I have bulky 5 yarn. What adjustments do I need to do to make this please?
I’m not certain, to be honest. You may need to do 1-2 more rounds of increase and make more rounds. (Assuming you are using a smaller hook)
I need to try this one ! Can I make it with a weight 5 ? Any adjustments needed ?
Never mind I see a previous reply , I’ll just experiment
I've been having trouble make this hat with Hometown super bulky weight 6 and 81 yards. Mine have been coming out matching number of stitches but I'm still ending up at 5" for the 3rd round in diameter. I'm not sure what's going wrong. I've tried to make this hat several times now.
This means you need to go up in hook size
Beautiful beanie! I was just wondering, why the first 2 rounds in the written pattern, are different than your video tutorial?
Are you reading the messy bun version that has the opening at the top or the beanie version? I don’t recall doing the video differently than the written pattern other than that, but it’s been a few years so I’m not 100% sure.
@@DaysCrochet it's the beanie version. Round 1 is just done with the magic circle instead of the chain 9 then doing the circle like you do. Mostly it's round 2. It doesn't specify doing the HDC in the BLO. That doesn't start until round 3. I could be reading it wrong (as I am somewhat new to crochet) so I thought I would ask.
would you suggest using a 10 mm hook for hookers with tight tension? Thanks x
Definitely would go up at least to a 10.0 mm if you crochet tightly. I crochet very loosely, and I usually have to go down 2 hook sizes to meet other designer’s gauge swatches. Lol
@@DaysCrochet Thank you! I will try making it both ways. Your tutorial is perfect. Love the pointing and pulling stitches to show us exactly what you mean. Great tutorial.
Thank you so much! I am glad you enjoyed it 🤗
Do you have a stitch count suggestion/modifications to make these in a size 5 Bulky weight yarn?
I don't have the stitch counts, but you could realistically follow the pattern concept and shoot for measurements. I have a video explaining how to do this if you're interested:
ruclips.net/video/yta9ve38ePg/видео.htmlsi=YhSmN5AH0FgRlJxj
@@DaysCrochet I understand that you don't have a specific stitch count for the #5 yarn weight, but do you have a stitch multiple for the fpdc rounds so I can alter it to the new yarn size? Like the rounds have to be a multiple of say 4 for example?
Do you have the pattern for a size 3-6 month (17” head) ?
You could just use a smaller hook and some size 4 worsted weight yarn or possibly size 5 chunky weight yarn. You could also do fewer sts in round 1.
do you want the gauge to be 6in bc in at 5. Should I make another round?
Can you go up a hook size or no?
@@DaysCrochet i can try that. I'm using an 8mm but I can try my 9mm
it just sucks bc it took me a while to get it down lol. I'm no good with magic circles.
I didn’t use the magic circle myself🤔 I also recommend a 9.0 or a 10.0 mm hook in the supplies listed in the description box.
@@DaysCrochet The 10 is great. Thank you! It came out so cute.
What size hook
The pattern calls for a 9mm hook just saw your question made a few last year and they are in demand again
I think that's what she was planning to on the yarn wrapper size 6.
Any tips on making this for a six year old?
You could go down a hook size or do fewer rounds. There really isn’t a huge discrepancy between a 6 yr old and an adult sized head, believe it or not! ☺️
What size hook to make an adult sized hat?
All of the supplies are listed in the description box below the video. Click the tiny down arrow to the bottom right of the video to expand the description box ☺️
Do you have a complementing scarf or cowl for the hat?
Unfortunately, no. But it would be extremely easy to make a cowl with a similar appearance. Are you a beginner crocheter or a seasoned crocheter? I don’t wish to confuse you
@@DaysCrochet seasoned, I'll think about it some more and figure it out, thank you!
@@melissastewart5838 ok I would make a chain in multiples of 4 until it measures approximately 24” long, make a ring. You could then make a few rounds to make a simple ‘border’ of sc or you could do a slight ribbing using fphdc/fpdc. Then follow the hat pattern of the repeating rounds of 3 hdc in the BLO, then 1 fpdc. Do rounds until it measures approximately 10”, then add another ‘border’ or ribbed edge the same method you started with. It should be about 12” total. I hope that makes sense!
@@DaysCrochet yes absolutely, that was kind of what I was thinking, I just could not make up my mind if I wanted to make it in a cowl or make it like a scarf in rows then see it together.
What size hook were you using?
All the supplies are listed in the description box below the video. Click on the tiny down arrow button to the bottom right to expand the description box ☺️
Both times my had ends up at 5 inches and not 6? I can't figure out what I am doing wrong here. I am using different yarn but it's still similar.
Are you referring to the diameter? If so, you need to go up a hook size and start over.
@DaysCrochet yes, the diameter. I will try that on my next hat, thank you for responding! I really love your vode, by the way, it's very clear and concise!
@@kittenswithmittens5537 thank you❤️

The description box is a tiny down arrow at the bottom right of the video. Once you tap it, it expands the description box. I hope this helps!
Where to get the labels you use

What hook size did you use?
All supplies are listed in the description box below the video. Click on the tiny down arrow to the bottom right of the video to expand the description box.
In one of the comments they explained what to do.
Did I do something wrong? It is most definitely not big enough to fit in my head Or my husband's! 😭 I've had a rough couple of days
I’m so sorry 😞 My guess would be your tension is too tight. Did you reach my gauge? That’s really important. But if you don’t want to scrap your hat and start over, what I would do is add more rounds until it’s long enough. The material should be really stretchy since you are working in the back loops of your stitches. Maybe try that or go up 2-3 hook sizes. I hope your day gets better 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
What size hook have you used please?
Lorraine Smyth all my supplies are listed in the description box (for future reference), but I’m using a 9.0 mm hook. I crochet very loosely, so if you crochet tightly, I would go up to a 10.0 mm hook.
@@DaysCrochet thank you. I did find the list after I posted the question :)
How do I get the pattern?
The free pattern is on my blog, but if you wish to have an ad-free printable version , you can find it here: dayscrochetnc.etsy.com/listing/675271525
