DCS World in VR - Is it practical?

- I have steered clear of flying DCS in VR as I knew the modelled aircraft have an array of switch gear that is normally interacted with using a mouse. However, in VR, it can be quite difficult to locate the mouse!
I made this video because I'm really interested in the FA18 and the F14, but didn't want to drop $80 USD if I couldn't fly DCS in VR. I already owned the A10C, so I thought, why not give it a go?
PC specs are: I7-6700k processor @ 4Ghz, 16 Gb RAM and an nVidia 1080ti graphics card. This is powering a HTC Vive Pro headset!
DCS in VR is orgasmic when it runs smoothly! Seeing ground missiles launched and avoiding them is a pleasure in VR...
You get there easy bro lmao!!
Practical? I can't play without it now. Damned right it's practical.
What do you use?
@@asiftalpur3758 Oculus S, Orbweaver, Thrustmaster HOTAS and a Logitech Track Ball. Sounds like a mess but it isn't.
Think you can use oculus quest?
@@noobo7694 I don't think so, Oculus quest is a separate PC inside the goggles, and probably not powerful enough for DCS
@@noobo7694 You can use Oculus Quest. You will need a Link cable to allow this function.
You could also use a program called voice attack it makes your voice key the keyboard!!
There's an addin for Voice Attack call vaicom. It's amazing in terms of interactivity and really brings DCS to life. I highly recommend it.
So I'll be screaming in our bedroom with my VR: cannon; shoot and my gf comes into room seeing me 32Y drooling all over. Explain that 😂 anyhow I will take a look
@@yamabushi170 I used the old version of that, and it worked pretty well. I just took a look at the latest version, and it's come a long way since then. If my experience with the (very) old version is anything to go by, it's a worthwhile addition to Voice Attack.
@@CEX2 - Nah, flight and weapons controls you tie to the HOTAS; VoiceAttack is better used for things like controlling landing gear, flaps, some engine controls, etc.
@@florbfnarb7099 naaa, it is immersive only if used for communications. DCS is not Elite Dangerous 🤣🤣
Have you encountered any “unexplained aerial phenomena,”?
Many people are going to get punched in the nuts by roommates while wearing VR headsets. That's my prediction.
Darn it...now I've got to find a way to explain to the wifey why I have to buy some more expensive stuff....VR headset and a new computer included...darn
:D
I'm actually running a really poor-man's VR combination:
A VR streamer server software on my laptop
A VR streamer client on my smartphone
TrackIR marker on my VR headset
So I'm getting an almost VR-ish experience, except my laptop isn't that powerful (it only has a Intel Graphics card so no nVidia even if it has a i7 CPU and 16GB of RAM)
The framerate I get with the VR streamer isn't enough for actually flying it at almost any resolution but playback of recorded flights works decently and even with low res like 640x768 the added depth of view from the stereoscopic image is incredible. Switching to outside cameras is priceless, the most impact I felt was from the F4 camera flying the Su-25T - you could literally see and zoom into the cockpit from the spine of the plane. Cycling through F3 and F7 views was equally dramatic, you felt like you were there. Best part was when my little girl tried it, she reached out to grab the plane she was seeing - that said it all to me at least :D
Don't forget it costs $80 per plane per and 80$ per map.

Yep
I have had DCS since it wasn’t even DCS. Just A-10C and Blackshark. Always loved it. I bought a Rift about a year ago and now have the Rift S. I CANNOT go back to flying on the monitor haha. It is so immersive and I still get the good ole stomach drop sensation when doing certain maneuvers. It makes using the helmet mounted sights super easy as well. I’m able to type without looking so having to hit the few keyboard keys I need comes easy for me. Everything else is mapped to my x52. Definitely recommend
I know my keyboard like my hand so i get by pretty well in vr in this game
i love VR i fly the A-10 and its freaking just like the real thing! well almost!

Rocco exactly! And no one that ACTUALLY fly’s A-10’s is coming to RUclips to brag about it. Funny how every RUclips video has someone that is a professional at the main topic.
DCS has been one of the VERY FIRST Softs to support VR, and among them without any doubt the best + best support / interest
I started with a simple Oculus DK2. Now with a OQ2 (or some other good VR device) it's a killer
There is an easy way to see the entire cockpit. To see the controls in the back left side, glance up and right, center the VR view, THEN LOOK BACK LEFT! You then can correct the center view by looking forward normally. To see the controls in the back right side, glance up and left, center the VR view, THEN LOOK BACK RIGHT!
It turns out looking at the aft controls on either side in a real FA 18 is awkward as well. That is why the cockpit designers for the real cockpit restricted those controls to items needed on the ground and not mid flight.
Q: DCS World in VR - Is it practical?
A: Yes. Eagle Dynamics has made DCS natively compatible for Virtual Reality. DCS VR users understand that most essential keys and interfaces need to be either pre-programmed elsewhere or implemented on their Hands-Off Stick and Throttle (HOTAS), accessible keyboard (such as one made by Razer, Logitech or other) or accessed using voice command software. DCS World and its interface supports this and are open to forum suggestions to either improve or refine these options.
Virtual Reality is choice and those choosing to use it, make it “practical” by other means despite the complexity of the aircraft.
Hate to be a stickler but HOTAS stands for Hands-ON throttle and stick.

Yeah had to stop watching it immediately. Uhhhhhhhhh
Tldr : yes, VR is awesome and practical for DCS. I've got an hp reverb and wouldn't go back to using a monitor.
...when it works properly. It simply keeps stuttering in big missions (like 4ya or GrowlingSidewinder servers). Great when not lagging tho ngl
@Evanesce Yeah I just switch on my SSD and it's fixed lol, at least it's way better than before haha

I only fly DCS in VR. I use the mouse for most switches. It's amazing.
Seconded.

yeah, warthog stick has almost enough switches, I think I need like the F-keys and that‘s about it.
I fly BFM majority of the time. Doing it without VR is like bringing a knife to a gunfight.
test vtol vr try this game as it has full interaction with the vr controls
That game is good for what it is and a great effort by a single developer but I had to refund it. Love the touch controls but after hoping right back into dcs vtol just felt like flying a cartoon aircraft. It's a good alternative if you don5have the patience or $ for dcs.
I wish dcs had full interaction controls but i rather a more realistic plane then the vtol plane have it but still choose dcs more
Both games have a place on my pc. I can just jump into VTOL and fly. Have to spend time learning and re-learning all the systems in dcs. Like both.
I also recommend Xplane 11. Native VR is great , you can interact with everutibjn using controllers only. IMHO better implementation than DCS
VTOL is the best sim ever made, it is not just good look, but it has real stuff hapening everywhere.
Since I got the rift s from my rift dcs will never again be played on a Beamer or high res screen
The problem with monitors is you lose the sensation of flight as there is no depth perception. I'm the same as you I won't touch a simulator - car or plane, unless it's in VR - I have been spoiled :)
@@WeiFinder Project Cars 2 is weird. I owned it for a long time but never played it as it was a slide show in VR and made me feel queasy. Then I found one setting, which I don't know what it was, but could have been v-sync (I turned it off), then the game ran like a dream!
Eat a chilli every time he says: uuh
Hahah I was terrified when I tried this on my Index for the first time. I crashed after a while lmao
From another VR DCS pilot: Mount a trackball mouse down opposite your throttle side and map your crosshair to it, as well as an "enable/disable" command and "activate" command to allow you took reach the buttons, switches and controls that your headset's regular range of movement won't let you reach. While I would LOVE to have a fully functional cockpit, I would have to choose one type of A/C to emulate. With VR, I only have to match up positions of stick and throttle (and maybe some hand-holds)...
I'm trying to brainstorm a cockpit design that would let me mount different controls for different A/C (center stick and throttle for F/A-18, side stick and throttle for F-16, yoke and side throttle for C-47, yoke and upper throttle for a Grumman Goose, etc., etc...)
In any event, VR is going to make it much easier for folks looking for a full immersive experience without the technical savvy to actually build a full on cockpit - (mad props to you guys who know your way around a soldering iron and computer programming!!!)
The trackball sounds like a great idea!
@@ReallyVirtual He mounted a wireless unit with magnets to a plate affixed to his chair next to he right thigh where his hand naturally drops. Genius...
How do you get that head mounted cursor so you can click things it dose t show up for me
I think it's because I have 'Use Mouse' disabled under the VR tab. But saying that, I don't ever remember not seeing it!
@@ReallyVirtual ah it’s just because I was flying a plane that just doesn’t have one I only have the free version so I’ve got the two base planes and one of them has the radical the other doesn’t
Sidewinders are 9 feet long and definitely are lifted by more than one person. Looking at the Wikipedia data, they're anywhere from 170 to 190 pounds, so definitely it would take multiple people to lift one to a pylon by hand.
Aye and in VR that really sticks out. On a flat-screen the sidewinders look really small!
Fantastic clip

OMG I WAS LOOKING FOR THESE "UI LAYER" BINDS..... Hero!
No worries - have fun!
No problem using a mouse in vr. I use the TM Warthog and a mouse and even keyboard for things like the F keys and other easy to find keys. But i am looking forward when they develop something that allow you to use your hands properly, leap motion is not good enough.
I thougt DCS World supports major VR headsets?
It supports everything that supports SteamVR
I saw some guys playing with VR and the guy took his hand off the throttle and grabbed his Oculus looking control. When he did he had a hand with a pointer. Mine doesn't have that option I don't believe
I got vr when Oculus came out in DCS and for those who are thinking about getting vr,
1) you have to have a decent rig or you'll be disappointed. I owned a 1060 and it was not upto the job unless I set all to low. You will get motion sickness if your machine can't keep your eyes a smooth frame rate. This is the biggest advice that's boring but essential.
2) VR is currently in maturing phase... Spend time researching/trying out if possible options. Bigger resolution isn't always better. For example the primax 8k is further from your eyes, meaning the PPI isn't much greater, LED isn't as black as OLED... Etc
3) touch typing is insanely useful, especially in multiplayer DCS, unless you find a group all on voice, a rare thing. You know where your keyboard and mouse is, no need to take off the set.
4) Modifiers!! DCS controls setup allows you to setup a modifier. Think of it like holding down the CTRL key on your keyboard, it makes your others keys do different things to usual, only it is for HOTAS.
My modifier is my paddle switch, it's quick and easy to hold and allows every other switch (even axis) to be reprogrammed. I use this to control mouse and other less common/urgent tasks, like APU start, open canopy, TO trim, fuel flow etc.
I wish I could touch type :) Modifiers are extremely useful and it seems we both use the same one :)
1060 runs well enough with a Rift S, biggest problem is DCS being unoptimized for today's hardware. It's isn't an amazing graphical bells and whistles experience, but still incredible to be sat in a cockpit flying an A-10.
I’m new to this, can’t help myself but recession aside, Is the 1060 reference to a GeForce type video card? If yes what is the minimum hardware setup that you recommend?
Thanks for the great video.. Just what I was looking for.. I am new to DCS, totally loving it going through the Su-25t tutorials, got myselft Thrustmaster t.16000m fcs HOTAS recently.. all in anticipation for my Valve Index arrival next month :) .. Glad to hear that you're running it on the same GPU as mine... Got more hyped and excited now :).. and I thought that Elite Dangerous will dominate my VR playtime lol
Wait til u get into a VR chopper
Since the volumetric cloud update is out vr is a must have I think. It is a real game changer.
Aye - they make such a massive difference to the sim! :)
Get VoiceAttack software (and a decent trackball mouse as backup). Problem solved.
It is discounted on sale via Steam at this moment
I've thought about it - especially for radio comms , but wonder if there is a performance hit?
@@ReallyVirtual No performance impact that I have ever noticed in 2+ years / 1500+ hours. In addition to voice commands, it also has some simple programmable features that allow you to do other nifty things related to mapping keys onto joystick buttons, axes, and more complicated things like creating toggle functions, adding extra shift buttons to your HOTAS, etc. I have a small Discord channel if you want to chat/fly with us sometime, just let me know.
I installed dcs last night, I've just started the training missions in the SU-25T I'm using an Xbox controller couple keys on keyboard and a 27 inch monitor 🤣🤣
You will enjoy I fly with a PS4 controller and honestly if you configure it right it is quite enjoyable
Not as good as a HOTAS but definitely much better then keyboard you will enjoy it :)
I enjoy it more that on-screen but it definitely puts you at a disadvantage. You just can't see objects as far in VR as on-screen.
I keep my mouse next to my keyboard on sim chair I built so both are available and easily reached.
While most aircraft are easy to view in-cockpit details, I don't find that the case with the F14. Looks like Heatblur did too good a job of aging the interior. So good, most is illegible even at max zoom.
If I was able to fly against others, rather than AI (I have no internet to speak of), I don't think I'd use VR as the visibility just isn't good enough.
I wish Eagle Dynamics would get somebody going on VR optimization(as promised). It's definitely a more realistic way to experience their game.
I had information yesterday that their VR team made a big breakthrough and have apparently doubled the framerate, which we should see in the next patch.
The F14 is on my 'to-buy' list, so I'm a little disappointed to hear about the clarity. What kind of headset are you using? I know when I upgraded to the Vive-Pro last year, I found a huge improvement compared to the standard Vive. Not so much a resolution improvement, but an improvement in terms of the screen-door effect, this is much reduced on the Pro and really makes a difference in sims.
i have to agree, im using rift with 1.3 super sampling, and im having trouble reading the dials and seeing far out objects, even runways sometimes, gladly there is the vr zoom, which is like using binoculars, im using it constantly.
@@ReallyVirtualI returned to DCS VR a few days ago, is this patch already in the game? Noticed a bit of an improvement but can´t really tell if its a huge improvement because I paused VR for a while.. Btw very helpful video ;)
Little Egga Howdy, as far as I’m aware, the patch is not yet in the game. Of my virtual flight sims, I find DCS to be one of the better ones when it comes to performance - and that’s before the patch!
Mark Webber, there is a mod available on the DCS World Download page to replace the aged labels in the F14 with nice new ones. Might help you out.
How come some people say you need 32gb ram to get smooth vr?
Also have you compared the vive to the rift S?
I was hoping to get a new pc but was quoted around £1700 for a build good enough to run dcs and vr, plus the monitor... And the headset and sticks.... So around 2500! I'll take real flying lessons instead maybe 😂
I think you need more RAM for the bigger missions and maybe multiplayer. I have played all of the campaign missions that came with F18 and never had a problem. Never tried the rift-s, but apart from its sound, I have heard it's pretty good.
@@ReallyVirtual thank you!

If you have a good HOTAS it’s the only way to play. Only thing I need my keyboard for is some radio commands F1-F12. You need to enable your mouse movement, then you can access all those buttons you said you couldn’t get to.
Agreed with Slow Neutron.. for sure it's practical.. I play exclusively in VR for one year now, and couldn't go back! (Valve index, 9700k, 2080s, virpil hotas)
Did you experience and VR Vertigo or motion sickness?
No - I have never experienced it, though a game called Ritchies Plank comes close! My understanding is that VR affects people differently. Even those who do suffer from motion sickness will tend to have VR apps where they are not so affected - and this will be different for everyone.
idk why VR always uses floating hands... seems like it would be way more immersive if they rendered your body.
check out VTOL VR^^
Since I got the Rift CV1, and now with the Rift S, I have never had any issues with DCS World, and in fact it has been probably the best VR experience for me overall. The sense of scale and depth is amazing. I have many DCS modules, and they are all amazing in VR. I can understand some have trouble with the keyboard functions, but I still use my keyboard for a lot of functions through a combination of feel, memory, and peeking down through a small gap at the bottom of the Rift. I use my mouse with no issues at all, and the mouse is constantly in use to control switches, buttons, valves, levers in the VC. I use a HOTAS Warthog and of course I map as many functions as I can to that, and those mappings vary from aircraft to aircraft in an effort to replicate each aircraft's real HOTAS layout. I HIGHLY recommend DCS World for any VR user even if it's just to sit in a cockpit or look at an aircraft from external view for a few minutes. The base simulator is free and comes with a map and two aircraft, and another free map is currently in development.
This!
What are your system specs?
@@Scott.Farkus My specs now are based around an i9-9900k and RTX2080Ti. I used to use the Rift CV1 with DCS World on my previous system also with excellent results. My previous specs were based around an i7-2700k and GTX980.
@@md11x6 I'm running it on a Ryzen 5 3600 with a GTX 1660 ti O.C.. I'm not getting the detail I want; I wonder if maybe I'm overlooking something in the Rift S software or maybe somewhere in DCS that's limiting my performance?
Flying the P51 everything looks pretty good, flying the UH-1H Huey it doesn't look as good. Also can't turn off civilian traffic in DCS Huey, maybe my Huey module is corrupted or something.
@@Scott.Farkus Hmmm. Not sure about the Huey. I do have that, but have not actually used it. Maybe try uninstalling and reinstalling. When flying VR in DCS World I do pretty much just use the VR preset in the graphics settings, and then I bump up the cockpit resolution to max, and I may have also bumped up the draw distance or something, but I did not change much at all from the VR preset. I tend not to worry about outside detail much in DCS World as a lot of time tends to be looking in cockpit, especially in a module like the A-10C, which I spend a lot of time in. Another thing to try, and something you can do pretty regularly if things start to bog down, is to delete the shaders. I use Open Beta 2.5, and I delete the contents of the following folders: "C:\Users\....\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\fxo" and "C:\Users\....\Saved Games\DCS.openbeta\metashaders2". These will be rebuilt upon restart. It is well proven that deleting the shaders can help refresh performance and some graphical issues in a number of simulators including FSX, P3D and XP11 too. If all else fails, just go to very low settings and add features one by one until you find what is causing the performance to drop. I think you should be pretty good after using the VR preset though. Just make sure to bump the cockpit resolution back up, as that is obviously important for clarity in VR. One more thing too, check your pixel density in VR options. If that is too high it will degrade performance. I think I set mine to about 1.5.
I just bought the new UFO for $160. Im guessing they dont know how the anti-gravity system works though since not all the switches are switchable. A little bit of a let down. Im sure when the classification files get released, they'll get to work on it. Also the element 15 seems to get burned a little fast
VR + hotas Throttle/Joystick + Rudder + VoiceAttack = whoopie!!
Haven't watched the video just yet, but I do play DCS in VR. So, a few points:
1. The mouse is actually usable. I have an office chair setup with clamps meant to mount a TV to a wall clamped to each armrest; my HOTAS is held to the mounting plates for each with wide squares of Velcro, and it holds VERY well. I have one of those clamp-type mouse shelves that you'd use for a desk that has limited surface space, clamped low to the side of my chair. Not ideal, but it works well enough for when I need the mouse,
2. The Oculus Touch controllers are also usable in DCS. Personally I only use them for a relative handful of things I haven't yet set up with hotkeys. I also use them pretty much only for a handful of things during a cold start on the ramp, and very occasionally in flight - never for anything you'd need to use during combat. I'm still looking for a convenient way to hang them off hooks off the side of my chair, or perhaps some sort of vest where I could put them in a pouch on the vest. Right now I'm either setting them in the desktop (they're visible in VR when you have them activated, even when idle) or sitting in my lap, neither of which is ideal.
3. VoiceAttack is absolutely indispensable. I've already been using VA for Elite: Dangerous, where it's also essential for VR play, although it's useful even when playing on a monitor. My goal is to set up ALL controls for voice command activation except those functions best suited for HOTAS, especially combat-oriented controls and fundamental flight controls like trim. You can get VA for free and it lets you use a limited number of commands - 20 I think. For $10 you get the full application, and it's well worth $10 or even more.
4. I highly recommend that if you want to start from a cold start, that you become familiar enough with the cold start procedures via the tutorial to make your own kneeboard checklists for the cold start; kneeboard checklists are also very useful for other functions, like takeoff, data on various airfields, and landing. You can add custom kneeboard images to the game, and control them via keyboard hotkeys and therefore via VoiceAttack voice commands.
5. While Joystick Gremlin is indispensable for joystick input curves for Elite: Dangerous, DCS has user-defined joystick input curves built in, so JG is unnecessary. You can use JG for keyboard/mouse/HOTAS macros, but all of that functionality is also built into VoiceAttack, and having worked with both, VA's user interface is much easier to comprehend.
EDIT: Regarding your comment about the Vive hand controllers, I have the same issue with the Oculus Touch controllers: they can be difficult to find under the headset (I'm trying to think of a good solution for that) and neither desktop nor my lap seem like good solutions, and also, when not in use you have a pair of disembodied hands floating around that might block the view of the dashboard or at least be a distraction.
I think the solution will be to map everything or almost everything via voice commands and the HOTAS. VoiceAttack really is a life-saver for many functions, leaving the HOTAS controls free for things I need done even faster than and more reliably than voice commands allow; my HOTAS functions are limited strictly to flight control and combat functions.
I'm happy just using the HOTAS - I can do everything I need from there. That said, you are now one of many recommending VA, so I might look into that :)
I agree. I just bought a brand new A-10 HOTAS as well as the A-10C and F-14B. I've played flight sims most of my life- but I'm very new to DCS. With that being said, I was able to nail the carrier landing the very first time and the next 5 times after that. I've yet to wreck the aircraft on approach. So exhilarating when you can see everything in 1:1 scale- you can put the aircraft exactly where you want it!!!
VR is the killer feature for current flight sims!
Sounds weird but the head tracking for me is probably the most important VR feature in dcs. TrackIR is nice but it doesn't feel natural. Just had a Reverb G2 for testing und for me it is unsharp at far distances. Will try out the Hive. Not seeing enemies when dogfighting is a show stopper for me. Other than that ... fully agree on the perception for sizes. An AMRAAM is huuuuge :)
Then dont use a shitty headset? The $200 oculus quest has way more than enough resolution to see the tiniest of details.
How is the framerate in VR on this setup? I have a very similar setup and want to know if it's pleasant enough to consider
One tip for VR flying is to use a trackball mounted to a kneeboard in place of your mouse. That enables finding your mouse (trackball) by feel far easier.
Honestly I don't think you can compare VR to flat screen/s without factoring in head or eye tracking. I can't imagine anyone flying DCS without on or the other, MSFS perhaps but not DCS.
My squadron-mates shook their pitchforks at me when I told them about mapping the mouse to my Virpil throttle's thumb-wheel rotary/ HAT switch. Especially the guy who sold me his month-old Rift-S for a knockdown price because he couldn't get around not using the mouse :D
Coupled with Voice attack & Viacom, which I use mainly for radio, my TM MFD's hardly get used anymore.
For those buttons you can't easily point at with your head, I use the hand controllers & when not in use they stow on my desk in such a place as my virtual hands appear to rest on the inner cowling. I guess I'm just lucky.
Hey Stuart,
I'm new to all this, gathering information before buying, so please forgive me if I ask dumb questions.
So if I'm understanding correctly, you've set your controllers up so the thumb wheel on that awesome-looking Virpil throttle's thumb-wheel moves the mouse around? I'm guessing you mapped other controls for scrolling, right-click and left-click?
I've been looking at the A-10 Warthog HOTAS, could it be done with that?
Any chance of you making a how-to video?
Thank
@@seanof30306 Not quite, I point at the switches & buttons with my head, then I use the hat switch fore & aft for right & left click & the thumb-wheel to scroll. Got to the UI page at the bottom of the DCS controls modules list to edit your mouse assignments. Obviously fine motor control of the melon needs some practice initially though :)
My initial feeling is you'd struggle with a warthog throttle because it doesn't have enough 4-way hat switches, unless you sacrifce another button for a modifier, also not sure what would be most suitable to map to the scroll. A lot depends on what modules you're flying, but I found that I could map all A-10C real HOTAS throttle functions to the virpil & still have buttons left unused, including that rotary & hat switch.
Does anyone know how to make EWRS reports smaller on multiplayer servers? I'm using an oculus rift and when there's a lot of bandits the window is HUGE and covers half my field of view.
I know I can turn them off completely but I want the info... If just like a way to scale the output window
Hi does anyone know where you can try out a VR setup with DCS in the UK? I am trying to get my Dad (ex-pilot) into it in his retirement - I know he'd absolutely love it, but I'm looking for a place where he can try it out first. Thanks!
It's not just practical, it's AWESOME! Way better than Arma 3 using Vorpx(which doesn't really work, and when it does it doesn't really work very well).
Change your Tacan freq, or turn the signal volume off if you’re not using it. ... :)
edit: You sold me on FINALLY getting a VR set to use with DCS... :)
I'm a n88b - what can I say - but you are right - tacan morse - very annoying :)
hold off until HP iron out the bugs with their Reverb headset. If you get a working model you'll fall in love with it. The resolution blows all the other models out of the water. But do wait to be certain they're fully working.
Maybe this doesn't apply to many pilots but one downside to VR is that you can't really share the experience with anyone else wanting to just ride along as a passenger enjoying the view. Granted the wow factor tends to wear off, as with most things, so maybe you won't have anyone wanting to join you very often but it is kind of nice letting people see what your doing and doing a little world exploring from the air. Maybe this can be done in VR if you have a second VR headset but I haven't seen any how-to videos on this yet. My guess is that would require a very high end system to drive two headsets from one PC.
mmm flying and driving games I cannot go back to a panel, so yeah its very practical, get a good HOTAS and or use Voice attack problem solved, DCS is the only sim I can fly a helicopter in vr and its amazing
It's the only way to go for these type of games. Now that I have finished Half Life Alyx, I might add the first person shooter to that list too!
I watched you for whole 3 minutes. First thing you need to get right is the fecking AUDIO. If you want to record audio then get a decent microphone, because the audience is lisening to your voice. Currently is it fecking terrible.
Can I use my vr controllers to touch the buttons
Yes
If you aren't already playing in VR pick up a cheap Oculus Rift S and start now because you're missing like 50% of the experience
Should see it in a Samsung Odyssey Plus it is a lot clearer. For $299 on sale it is well worth it.
even better with pimax and its wide fov but yes pricey
@@vracan Yeah my friend has the Pimax 5k+ and the FOV is really nice, but it has a lot more SDE than the O+. After playing on a headset with 90% of the SDE gone it is hard to go back.
@@ComdrStew same except for me it is the fov which stops me from going back. And too tell you the truth I dont notice any sde on my p5k+ but thats me. As far as Im concerned only prblem is blacks but in dcs this is no issue unless flying night.
Thank you for the video sir! I've been playing Elite Dangerous in VR for quit a while and would not even consider playing flat screen now. The only reason I didn't try DCS was for the exact same reason. I thought it would be impossible to get everything on the HOTAS. Thank you again! I should be in my Warthog tomorrow!
Happy Flying :)
Nice video, starting dcs in vr i cannot play on a screen its a a whole different ball game. Only downsides i find are lack of clarity and poor resolution compared to a screen but i am only on an occulus rift s but even so i would never go back to a screen
its easy to use a keyboard blind. if you have a 60% just go to escape key go over 2 down 1 and your on f and from there it should be memory
If you could fly the world in DCS, I would get it. Not going to get it for a map covering several countries.
I am thinking about to open my mouse and put the buttons onto my gloves at the finger tips. And put a wooden panel in front of me to click against.
Thank you for this. Actual information versus a shit “hey, guyssss” travesty. It’s good to hear an experienced opinion
TrackIR and monitor = the choice of the wanker. Best flight sim VR tool = VoiceAttack.
I fly the F18 in VR. First: VR is AMAZINGLY real and totally destroys 2D. Second: I set up as much commands on my flight controls and on my 'hands as possible by priority. Third: I situate myself in the same spot EVERY TIME, have my 'Hands' placed on my thighs for easy reach, and I can reach forward onto my keyboard like reading brail and 'find' the keys. The easiest is the F keys. It just takes practice. I too have youtube videos of DC world on 'Brad's World.'
How is spotting other aircraft (targets) compared to flat screen? I struggle with this an after many adjustments seeing what helps, I can only see AC out to 5nm 50% of time and at 2km 80% of time.
Never measured it - but have never had an issue. The caveat being that I'm using a Vive Pro which has a relatively high screen resolution.

@@kennethhicks2113 If you've already pushed out the view range as far as you can to no avail, you can try bumping up pixel density. It's under VR options in DCS.
I'm using the Rift CV1, and it's flyable. Screen door effect only really gets me if I'm trying to spyglass on something suuuuuper far out. But that's what BVR is for anyways haha.
@@jnarai Whats your typical seeing distance on small fighter AC (18,16, typhoon, etc.)?
@@kennethhicks2113 I can usually see out to what seems to be pretty realistic ranges for spotting smaller aircraft (depending on AC size & aspect, clear conditions). Sorry I can't be more accurate, I'm suuuper bad at judging distances in DCS, still pretty new to it.
I have an i5 7600k, 16gb RAM and GTX1070 but when I tried VR with my oculus rift S, the cockpit looked ok but everything else outside looked terrible for instance an f16 parked 30 metres away was all pixelated and this really breaks the immersion that you get with VR for me. Is it just my PC specs that are too low for DCS (other games in VR generally are fine)? This was using the 'VR' graphics preset in the options (however turning textures from low to high to try and increase how nice stuff looked gave me a drastic perfomance hit such that I had black lines on either side of my FOV when looking around as it couldnt update fast enough)
I've never used a Rift-S so can't really comment - my Vive-Pro does have a higher resolution, so that could make a difference. I know in my case sticking the super-sampling slider in the VR tab of DCS to x 1.5 made a large difference in clarity. That said, even with the best headsets out now, you won't rival a 4k screen.
Thanks for this video, it helped me make the decision to try VR with DCS. How do you place the base stations, relative to your computer, if only using this for Flight Simulation? I don't plan to use VR while standing up and playing shoot-em up games, so only really need to cover the area I am sitting at, at my computer. Thanks in advance for the help (to any and all with VR experience), love to hear from you....(TOTAL NOOB to VR here and not ashamed to ask stupid questions...LOL).
Thomas McCoy I have no idea with regards to the base stations as I have them at the diagonal corners of the room as I do room scale too. Perhaps someone else can answer. As for using the mouse in the cockpit, that can be done too - but I prefer to use the VR headset and hotas for this!
Would this be playable on a ryzen 5 1600, RX 580, and 16gb?
I don't understand why do I have so shity graphic in VR?
My friend had the same, then he noticed he need to put on his reading glasses too and it worked. Sounds stupid, maybe it works.
@@willstewissen9855 That or the IPD isn't adjusted correctly
Does DCS World not support simulation of helmet mounted sights? American fighter/attack aircraft pretty much all use the JHMCS, Apache has IHADS, etc. I haven't seen anything that shows this in DCS.
It does! I use it all the time in the FA18 - not sure if the A10 has it though....
The fear of heights thing doesn’t really affect flying. I’m terrified of heights yet have done over 200 parachute jumps and every time I hit the ground I want to go back up. It’s why I was broke so much during my 20’s.
Neo Morph I’m the opposite. I used to regularly climb some pretty steep mountains and never had an issue. But if someone gave me a parachute I would probably think twice about it :)

Excellent vid. Got the HP REVERB (not PRO)....totally disappointed. Really bad graphics despite hours of trying to adjust it.
I had a similar experience with the OG Vive - the resolution was so low I couldn't even read the HUDs of the various aircraft. The Vive Pro and other higher resolution headsets are a whole different ball game :)
Not having the ....experience of flying VR........I don't disagree but ...flying TrackIR-5...is just as good without the cost.......
The four big differences between the two - and they are big differences are: 1) With VR you are IN the aircraft - with trackIR you are watching the aircraft on a flat screen 2) In VR you see everything at 1:1 scale, in tackIR it is scaled to fit the screen 3) VR has real depth perception - this allows you to see how high off the ground you are and it separates the aircraft from the surrounding scenery. With TrackIR everything is flat and the aircraft appears as part of the same picture as the terrain 4) With VR your head and body movements are 1:1 - thus making the dogfighting and situational awareness a lot more natural - TrackIR has a weird movement scaling where a small move of your head results in big movements on screen. They are worlds apart and not even comparable. The problem for me on a 2d video is trying to get across how real VR feels. VR is like the Matrix - no one can tell you what it is, you have to experience it for yourself :)
As soon as he turned the video off, the pilot got out of the plane and was really upset that nobody was there to help him. He jumped out of the plane and went ahead and filled a safety report complaint to the airport commander.
That night at home he couldn’t stop talking with his wife about the incident. “I have no idea how a thing like that can happen”, he kept saying.
Realism to the maxxxx
Good one!
I used to have the original Vive and was disappointed in the resolution and not being able read displays. It’s it perfectly clear with Vive Pro or still a bit of leaning in required ?
ExPatAviator The Pro and I suspect all recent gen headsets are much better. To a certain extent it depends on the aircraft. The F18 and A10 I have no real troubles with - it’s why if you watch my videos, I just act natural in them. The Harrier on the other hand does have some very small text in the MFDs that can be hard to make out - despite this the advantages of VR are too great and I’d never go back to flat screen for flight simulation!
Really Virtual thanks!
i pretty much only fly in VR, hard to go back to track ir. learn the cockpit :P
Maybe consider upgrading from the older HTC Vive Pro which has a lower screen resolution and suffers from Screen Door effect SDE many users report that its like looking through binoculars. Recommend looking at the new Pimax range of products with the wide field of view, particularly the flagship product 8K-X which has Dual Native 4K panels one for each eye. As featured at CES 2020.

How about weather scenarios? Would like to see you land in real weather scenario... Night flight..? Cheers!
That's a good point. Rather bizarrely I have done lots of night flights and IFR in X-Plane 11 in VR (there is a night flight vid on the channel), but never got around to doing it in DCS!
Isn't this 'shaking' quite bothersome? Just like the field of view never sits still, you can see it when looking at the bottom of the frame
I have a video that discusses this very issue :) ruclips.net/video/sHknuU_op5I/видео.html
Practical yes. Absolute ball-ache and money pit of a fight trying to get ED's not so stable and not so optimized software to run at a just about good enough balance of quality/fps in VR, is closer to the truth.
If only they'd fix this and the non-existent user interface instead of taking money for unfinished modules.
I agree they should fix more - but I have had no issues with the UI. My only real wish in that dept is to have a software keyboard for the mission editor (I create all my missions from within VR)
WHo cares if its practical. ITS FUN AS SH*T
I been using VR for sim racing the past 2 years. Absolutely love it. The only downside is its gets hot during long races. Can't wait to try this, I do need to build me a new pc though. I have 4690k and 1060. Hope it will be ok for low settings.
the 4690k might work, but overclock it as far as you can. 5+ GHz is ideal for DCS VR. You probably can't get than with a 4960k, but every extra GHz helps. Just don't damage your CPU. The 1060 will need an upgrade for DCS though. You could get an old 1080ti or one of the new 3000 series cards. Those would run DCS nicely. It's an expensive game, but it is worth it.
Pretty much all of the Radeon 6000 series work really well too
If only DCS would model an avatar with arms and hands etc. so you could reach out and turn knobs/flick switches like in VTOL VR.
Suge212 Aye that is one of the best things about VTOL and it makes such a difference to the immersion too. Alas, I think Eagle Dynamics have a lot on their plate, so we will be unlikely to see this in the near future.
@@ReallyVirtual Its funny how guys in Vtol say they want a Hotas and guys in DCS say they want it like Vtol VR.
@@alchemicalanarchist Aye - ideally both games should offer both! That way people can't complain! When I play VTOL (or X-Plane) I use a combination of real rudder pedals with the VR controllers - that combination seems to work very well!
how do you press keyboard key while wearing VR. How do you press aircraft switches when wearing VR.
The short answer is that I don't! All of the switches in the cockpit are clickable and I have configured the centre of my VR view to be the mouse crosshair. Two spare buttons are configured on the throttle for left and right mouse button. To activate a switch, I simply look at it then press the left or right button on the throttle to activate it! :)
When you lean forward does it work in vr?
Nice one, ive been looking at alot of reviews about which VR headset to go for with DCS and your'e the first to say your'e ableto see the dials and read the writing comfortably and that convinces. Thanks for video it was very informative.
Though that maybe down to using a Vive Pro along with 1.5 supersampling :)
Hey guys. Check pointctrl.com this is a finger pointing System for VR. ! Just received one. There is a thread in DCS forum. Check it out.
Cheers Desmo
Hey, thanks for the vid. Are you still playing? Have you upgraded your pc or headset? Cheers
I still play! The headset is still the Vive Pro - it still does a great job and I have no issues using it in DCS. Since these videos were filmed, my processor is now a top of the range I9 and the my RAM is up to 32Gb - everything else remains the same. It runs DCS very well - even multiplayer :)
Really Virtual awesome. I just downloaded it last night. I’m a total dcs newb. I’m got the A10C because I have the thrustmaster warthog hotas. I’m still figuring out how to map all the buttons and get this beast off the ground. I have a riftS and an old i5 pc but planning to upgrade and maybe go for the Pimax8kx. I want that big fov! Cheers
WHY IS CAMERA ALL TIME SHAKING. looks terrible
You might want to see my latest video on this very topic! ruclips.net/video/sHknuU_op5I/видео.html
Are you using a hardware throttle, joystick, and pedals with the VR rig?
Yes - all hardware. CH Pro for rudder pedals and Thrustmaster Warthog throttle and joystick.
Never have i had to "click a hat button" when using my track ir.
But in track IR you can both see and use your mouse. Given a choice between the two technologies I'd pick VR everytime. VR provides a great feeling of real flight due to depth perception (you can see how high off the ground you are) and it presents everything at 1:1 scale that require the same physical movements from the player as a real life pilot. (Looking behind you in VR is quite a physical activity as you have to partially raise your body in the seat - just like real life)
TrackIR came out 22 years ago and is now pretty much about to be redundant.
What VR set do you use? I have a i5 3570k, 16gig ram, 1080. Doubt I could run it well? EDIT: Vive pro is mentioned.
How do you see the keys on your joystick\keyboard? Muscle memory? I imagine the mouse is used for all buttons in cockpit?
I'm experiencing a small issue I hope you guys can help me with. For some reason the cursor isn't visible in vr making it impossible to click buttons in the cockpit. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Can someone help me? It says for me to press right shift and l to turn on the electrical power but nothing happens I don’t have a joy stick I use oculus quest/rift s controllers
Bro... I hope you have got a flight stick setup by now. DCS is not meant for KBM alone. That is just stupid to attempt.
I have! I use are warthog setup and pedals. You are right though. These planes were designed to be fought and flown using buttons on the throttles and stick. If you don't have those, you are at a serious disadvantage in air combat!
@@ReallyVirtual Exactly and nice choice!
