Medina is a beast. Surgical on that wave. So cool to see him and the GOAT go head to head especially back to back waves. This is why I watch these wsl videos
This is what happened. Medina took off out the back and rode the wave all the way, he got scored on twice as many turns as Kelly and on a better wave. It was clearly a much better ride. I am a big Slater fan but this was clearly a fair call.
Slater absolutely destroyed that wave..should of been all Kelly

Medina won for sure it was close but his wave was better for a Start and hiting the lip vert the judges love that , all these salty salts come at me
Medina the most entertaining surfer on tour in only 6 years he has made so much history in surfing, epic comebacks, questionable judging heats, gigantic moves he's had much more impact on surfing than anyone of this new generation.

I can't realise these much of fanboys, calling robbed, for who? The brazillian, for real? In a Australian event?! I see a lot of big guys crying like babys. Just count the time Medina was surfing, and the ammount of tricks, even the commentarists spoke that Medina was better, he neither sprayed K on the face and kept the tricks.

I don't like to claim overscore, but I really didn't see a 9.17 in that wave. Regardless, it's the judges decision, and some heats are just like that.

Just watch Kelly's style on the wave totally in control, Gabriel arms are al over the place = rushed and desperate...usually he is not but on this wave scrappy.

Thayane da Matta Medina showed a lot of strengh in his turns, the wave was a bit bigger than kelly's but for me slater had much more variaty even( Pete Mel said it).
Medina’s turns in those fast dredging inside pockets are much more tech and power than wrap around cutbacks. Even tho Medina is a light year behind Slater when it comes to Style and creativity

No variety from Gaby the wave wasn’t a point better than slaters
I still think about this heat to this day. I really believe Slater should’ve got the edge here. Medinas wave was bigger but Kelly had much more variety an was a limited clutch. Even Kelly went to the judges booth afterwards for an explanation
More vertical attack more risk cut backs are easy to execute and Gabriel's wave was way better Slaters wave let him down but he made the most out of it
To me it seems like the judges are favoriting goof riders, I don't know thats just me.

It's a judged sport. figure skating on waves. It doesn't matter.

But Medina had the same maneuvers and one floater... Kelly mixed it up with snaps, laybacks, and cutties. Plus Slater's wave had a big foam section that he had to get around and he made it look beautiful.
