Great interview. The Andy comparison was spot-on. A.I. (like Gabe) was always portrayed as the villain in the surf media. Plus, there's always been a language barrier with Gabe. His english is much improved these days; which allows him to relax and go casual and conversational without all the scripted cliches making him look so phony and staged all the time.
This was an awesome interview. People make mistakes. People make poor decisions. It's easy to blur someone's positive character traits after witnessing a negative. The fact remains, however, that people are not one-dimensional. Gabe runs a foundation that provides opportunities to kids. He clearly loves his family and friends. He exhibits generosity, respect and kindness. 99.9% of the time he wins heats because he just surfs really well. Discrediting the totality of Gabriel Medina's character because his competitive style can be controversial is like throwing away everything in the refrigerator because you found one rotten carrot in the veggie crisper.
Thank you Stab. Gabriel is a really kind human being. It's his nature. He's a ferocious competitor and one of the most talented and brilliant surfers of all time for sure. Hey Stab, this was a game changer. Thank you. Ultimately, everyone is doing the best they can with what they have at that moment. Medina reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo. Watching "The Last Dance" now, easy to make a comparison with Michael Jordan. Actually Jordan seems to be much worse... That Psycho mode that Mick told about. Of course that Medina still has a long way to go in this comparison. In carreer and also as a "creep" (wich I dont agree).
winning or losing, being a good guy or a bad guy, competing like a lion or taking it too easy ... you will always be judged by too many people. Many discussions are going around Gab and somehow it's still good for him :-) Putting so much of yourself, giving it all and going for it should be respected for what it is, at such a level it's not just only commitment it is also how much you are able to give from yourself (generosity starts with yourself), how much you can take and how consistent and resilient you can be ... and so on. Competing is not only about performance, it is also what kind of human you are at first. Congrats and respect Gab ! What some people think is not so much important ... live and let live ;-)
Gabriel's Backside Surfing is what really stands out! The dood gets speed and control while going backside then all of a sudden one slight turn and the sprays are flying!! plus his badass style going backside is soo clean and explosive! you know as soon as he stands up he is going to destroy some part of the wave his backside turns off of the top is soo rad that it is thrilling to watch!
Great interview. Gabriel is a great guy, fierce competitor and true Champion (life and surf). Thanks Mick, brazilians have big respect for you. Obrigado do Brasil.
Mick is this smart, super genuine, kind and evolved personality. Gabe is also this genuine, kind but still evolving in personality. Gabe also seem to be less careful in his words than In other interview, lost the fear of saying something weird
People don't get why brazilians are so competitive when it comes to sports ahahaha but I respect their perspective I love Mick. And loved how he conducted this chat by supporting his friend and trying to bring up things many people didn't know about Gabriel. *:)* wish he was still competing, I just couldn't root against him haha
Medina seems like an introvert and a workaholic. A lot of Brazilian kids in this business are on survival mode for a long time, sometimes when you finally get the status you’ve been working hard for is difficult to turn it off. It’s a process to enjoy the fruits of your labor and relax. Can’t imagine being the main breadwinner of my family, just to be responsible for putting food on the table as a teenager, seems like a big weight on anybody’s shoulder!
Way to go Gabriel by giving back like you do that's what its truly all about IMHO. You seem like a cool cat, a fierce competitor for sure and I totally respect that.
I used to be so critical of Medina...but it appears that it had a lot to do with him being very young at the time. Because now....im a big fan (unless its him vs JJF lol) and think hes a fantastic surfer and ambassador of the sport and for Brazil of course. The difference between him then, and him now, is totally opposite. What used to seem arrogant and snobby, is now without question, confidence and from the heart. Hearing about his passion for helping kids, those less fortunate or those with little opportunity is just fantastic and inspiring. Good on him.
Indo Bule I did not say the sole reason was his age. As for the Caio thing... Medinas desire to win and competitive hunger, can and do sometimes result in choices being made in the heat of battle, that in hindsight were not the best. But... any competitor is prone to this. Cheers
@@Indonesiansurftravel Sure the first one he thought he had priority . The heat was already in his pocket , think he went just to surf out. The second he wanted to block Caio for sure , Caio is not real part of the pack . He is from the big city , comes from a real wealthy family and a bit spoiled . Anyway think he would do just the same if was Miguel. He was never and is an outgoing guy when meeting a new person , besides when he first came on tour his English was zero .
I agree 100 that the language thing plays a big role in how he’s perceived. Which is a shame, because he actually speaks English very well. But he’s right... the psychology on both sides of the coin must be difficult. Him trying to articulate himself to a media, and fandom, that he knows will judge him on what he’s trying to say (which must be suuuuper tough and stressful with English in particular, because of all the colloquialisms and slang), and The fandom which will read into his statements literally as a word for word statement, when in actuality the vibe he’s trying to get across may mean something totally different to someone listening had he even used one word differently. It’s a tough space to be in I’m sure. Regardless, this was a good interview. WHY did it take him so long to do something like this? Did it seriously just take one superstar to say “I need to help this guy out with his public image”? I always wondered that. Why didn’t Gabe just do something like this a long time ago? He’s a kid and people would’ve understood. That’s the only thing that makes me think “is this real, or is it just damage control”? But that’s a very small part of my thought process. I actually always hoped he was more like this. Seems genuine
Bro, the thing is that Medina is a super star in Brazil. Aside from Rip Curl, his other sponsors here are not even surf related. You see him on tv on main ads all the time. Being the celebrity that he is (which actually gets him hate from much of the brazilian surf community) his reputation within the surfing world doesn't make that much of a difference to him business-wise, aside from his deal with Rip Curl.
Eduardo Portela I’ve never met anyone in my life who didn’t care if people thought they were a total asshole. And if there is someone like that... they’re a complete sociopath. I get what you’re sayin, but I don’t completely buy that
The term “damage control” exists for a reason. Especially when you’re a “corporation”. Which is essentially what he is, even if all he cares about is money and business
Actions speak louder than words, and it's his actions in the water that are the main reason people don't like him, blocking or using dodgy unsportsmanlike tactics.
Indo Bule I do agree with that. But I can’t speak to it. I have no comprehension of what is required to be not just a high level athlete, but the pinnacle of your sport kind of athlete. I have no idea what it takes to be a champion on that level. Maybe that’s what’s required. I watch something like “The Last Dance” and it makes me remember how god level Jordan was. But at the time I was a kid, and I didn’t know what he did to get there. And frankly... you could say the same about him. Kind of a dick on the court. So maybe you need some of that. I would rather not be an athlete of that level than have to be that way. But that’s me. I’m not wired like that. I want to have fun. But I can’t begrudge a guy or girl for acting that way to be the absolute best, because that’s their goal. Not mine. Could he be more like John, and more laid back? Probably. Is John better than him? I don’t know. But people don’t realize sometimes that John has that instinct too. He just doesn’t get painted the villain the way Gabe does. I think part of that is low key racism, part of it is language barrier, part of it is his awkwardness and shyness, and part of it is that he’s a dick in the water sometimes. But I’d guess we were all a dick in the water sometimes. Remember the last time you got snaked on a good wave. Maybe you were able to hold restraint. I wasn’t.
Huge respect to this guy, he's a competitor guys not a free surfer, competition is paid to give us some some show, what he actually does incredible well, he's not in CT to be the kindest, the role model or whatever you would desire. That said JJF or Mick are just both worlds, showmans and role models.
That is so true! If he could speak in his own natural language he could be better understood. Even Adriano, who had a bad reputation would be better off speaking in Portuguese. Communication is key, WSL should provide a translator for those who can´t speak English.
Awesome. I like his attitude, the guys that get fired up in heats produce the best viewing, guys like Kong potz AI the hobgoods (against eachother) and meduna.
A Brave person to become a legend has to use all the tools he provides in competition. That doesn't make him a bad character. There are two very good people G.M and M.F.
I think maybe he doesn't deserve bad reputation people give him.obviously very intense and competitive in the water as he needs to keep sharp for the tour. We have to realise these guys need a bit of space out there so they can train up and practice. Who knows he may be mellow and relaxed on land after his surf and happy to chat about life in general.
@@rodrigocortez6099 Not sure of it. Went over some of his IG posts and it seems like that "bean" has been stuck in there for a while... WE WANT THE TRUTH MICK
Thats a really big IF. These professional athletes lead a very self-centered life, and it often shows in their personality. Its kind of like its not their fault; but they SHOULD own up to it, and true humility would constitute tremendous change in an individual leading lives like these professional athletes; Its all about them until its not.
Being competitive and a good sportsman is also completely different to being competitive and being a bad sportsman, etc blocking, using dodgy drop in tactics, no accepting priority results and having a sook about them on social media etc
@@VLBRuiz Yeah great argument, a good person can have bad sportsmanship, and a bad person can have good sportsmanship. What the person is like out of the water his irrelevant to how they conduct themselves in the water. And if you say, he was only like that when he was young, it was only in October and December last year that, he had two run ins with Caio, he even took to social media on the first one, which caused Medina fans to bully Caio.
if you respect the pressure cooker that a snowboarding run, a downhill BMX run or a skateboard competition run is, then you should be able to respect Lemoore in that sense too...that said I reckon the wsl need more elements to make the event funnerer...like IRON CHEF has a feature ingredient, each heat should have an X factor manoeuvre that scores higher or something... like Ben Gravys spin the wheel contest
The reaction to his kind behaviour just shows the huge insensibility of WSL on their decision of not having a translator on the beach interviews. The brazilians has won 4 world titles, we are not a supporting nation any longer at the sport and we do speak portuguese here. All of our best surfers came from a poor background and cannot learn english from the early ages, they have to learn while world class competitors and then speak a broken english. There are many times that you can see that the surfer just couldn't understand the question made.

So proud of you Mick and Gabe. Winning titles or not, both of you are such an amazing human beings. At the end that's what really matter :)
Thanks Stab for your insight to these 2 legends.
Sure is a nice young man for sure...and such a frikken good surfer . Massive respect !
Unreal Sam/Stab, always loved him and love him even more now. Mick is just unreal too, so good to listen to this!
Amazing interview guys! Bunch of legends right there!
Hello! I'm listening from México City. Nice to know more about this two great surfers! Mick & Gabriel thank you for all your contribution.
Gby.
My opinion has now changed for the better about Gabe. Nice interview Stab!
Great interview been wanting to hear one with Gab for a while.
People don't get why brazilians are so competitive when it comes to sports ahahaha but I respect their perspective
I love Mick.
Great interview. Both legends!
If it was him just being young, how do you explain the two incidents with Caio late last year?
Him trying to articulate himself to a media, and fandom, that he knows will judge him on what he’s trying to say (which must be suuuuper tough and stressful with English in particular, because of all the colloquialisms and slang), and
The fandom which will read into his statements literally as a word for word statement, when in actuality the vibe he’s trying to get across may mean something totally different to someone listening had he even used one word differently.
I wasn’t.
Nice "interview" /chat congrats Stab. Two Legends.
Huge respect to this guy, he's a competitor guys not a free surfer, competition is paid to give us some some show, what he actually does incredible well, he's not in CT to be the kindest, the role model or whatever you would desire. That said JJF or Mick are just both worlds, showmans and role models.
Such an amazing surfer, multiple World Title winner, and an all-round great guy. Bravo!
Gabe is alright too I spose.
Thaks Stab! Great interview
That is so true!
If he could speak in his own natural language he could be better understood. Even Adriano, who had a bad reputation would be better off speaking in Portuguese. Communication is key, WSL should provide a translator for those who can´t speak English.
Adriano is a great guy
a translator, needs to happen
Two legends,..respect..
This IS Awesome ! thanks Stab
Hahaha 23:34 .. nice touch changing Mick's name to Eugene when he starts talking about partying. Well played Sam
I wish I had the focus and drive Medina has. The guy never had time to release a video part because he was too focused on being champion.
Medina representando, como sempre.
Nice interview, so much love from Brasil.
I always liked him !!! He is massive competitor
Awesome. I like his attitude, the guys that get fired up in heats produce the best viewing, guys like Kong potz AI the hobgoods (against eachother) and meduna.
obrigado pela entrevista
A Brave person to become a legend has to use all the tools he provides in competition. That doesn't make him a bad character. There are two very good people G.M and M.F.
Medina the best 🏄♂️🌞🏄♂️
El quebrador de las valas!
Pessoas muito boas, trocando uma idéia de verdade !
great content!Tx Stab,Mick and Gabe
For sure some good content
I think maybe he doesn't deserve bad reputation people give him.obviously very intense and competitive in the water as he needs to keep sharp for the tour.
We have to realise these guys need a bit of space out there so they can train up and practice.
Who knows he may be mellow and relaxed on land after his surf and happy to chat about life in general.
nice one boys
Вообще не слушаю о чем, просто смотрю и улыбаюсь - КРАСАВЦЫ! ТАКИЕ СПОРТИВНЫЕ♡♡♡
nice, these are the best.
Is Mick missing a tooth?

Can't really judge someone until you meet them!
Yeah but we are skipping the main and most important question here, when did Mick lose that tooth??
It's a bean lol
@@rodrigocortez6099 Not sure of it. Went over some of his IG posts and it seems like that "bean" has been stuck in there for a while... WE WANT THE TRUTH MICK

Hi guys! Love all your content. One question, how do you edit the video with Mck and Gabe at the top and Sam in the left corner?
Thats a really big IF. These professional athletes lead a very self-centered life, and it often shows in their personality. Its kind of like its not their fault; but they SHOULD own up to it, and true humility would constitute tremendous change in an individual leading lives like these professional athletes; Its all about them until its not.
Be competitive is different than be a bad person.
What he did to Caio Ibelli went far beyond competition. This guy is a total piece of shit.
Being competitive and a good sportsman is also completely different to being competitive and being a bad sportsman, etc blocking, using dodgy drop in tactics, no accepting priority results and having a sook about them on social media etc
@@Indonesiansurftravel You´re a loser.
@@VLBRuiz BTW. When people resort to name calling, its generally a sign they know they are wrong as have no decent argument to bring to the table.
very nice, aloha from rio, brazil
if you respect the pressure cooker that a snowboarding run, a downhill BMX run or a skateboard competition run is, then you should be able to respect Lemoore in that sense too...that said I reckon the wsl need more elements to make the event funnerer...like IRON CHEF has a feature ingredient, each heat should have an X factor manoeuvre that scores higher or something... like Ben Gravys spin the wheel contest
Great Mike and Gabi.
Medina is a wonderful young man
always liked Medina
Love Stab, you guys rock. Medina is the Brazilian Andy! But going against JJ, should be epic! Not sure who tops Slates in the modern day.
nothing like Andy...........
yep like A.I. a beast - takes no prisoners - top 10 of all time
Im a lefty and gofy rider i learn so much from him
The reaction to his kind behaviour just shows the huge insensibility of WSL on their decision of not having a translator on the beach interviews.
♡♡♡
10:17 I think Mick meant "Sicko Mode"
Comments around the media portraying Medina in a bad light..... STAB has put a lot of effort into discrediting Medina over the past few years. Speak up tell us why you did and why now your flipping?
Jeremy Bailey stab is like a girl, looking for money and fame... now gabe is the last chance for rip curl surviving, the ones that pays micks wage
... and heaps of jealousy...

Watching "The Last Dance" now, easy to make a comparison with Michael Jordan. Actually Jordan seems to be much worse... That Psycho mode that Mick told about.
Of course that Medina still has a long way to go in this comparison. In carreer and also as a "creep" (wich I dont agree).
creep? wot?
if all that you see is him in heats and how he acts its hard not to judge. he don't put out movies, edits clips of him being funny so how are we as public meant to see him in a different light. I would like to see that side of him.
one thing iv noticed about Brazilian pro surfers is they are hungry because the come from nothing
he didn't
things in Brazil are difficult man, basically we give blood all the time because we don't know if it will be the only opportunity of life...
@@Hermannelcio Really, what do you know about his life? Clear you don't have a clue,so shut tfup
im sure he has his nicer attributes. very hard to look past those dick moves we've all seen in competition and even free surf footage

teq why? If it’s what he loves and wants to focus all his energy on then that’s totally his thing
then you have never seen a goat of any sport
surfing is the only sport i know of were being competitive is frowned upon. its so stupid.
