Andy Irons vs. Kelly Slater: The Epic Quiksilver Pro Japan Showdown

- 2005 FINAL HEAT, EVERY WAVE with EVERY SCORE. Taj Burrow said this was the BEST FINAL he had ever seen.
Their roads to the showdown were different. Andy arrived at the event late and seemed out of sorts on the first round at a small beach break. Round 2 moved to the Japanese surf spot called Malibu- under the bridge in Chiba. Andy liked the punchy, hollow right-handers. Andy had a cruisy win over Dane Reynolds, and after that, he crushed all who came up against him until the super tight final. Kelly initially didn’t want to paddle out the morning of finals after looking at the wash-through conditions. He had a good point when he asked the judges and contest organizers to delay the start of the round for a higher tide later in the day. They declined, wanting to ensure the contest was finished before the Typhoon pushed ashore, which was scheduled to happen the next day.
Despite having surfed three previous heats each, both guys got off to a quick start. So quick that the score was 15.6 to 15.17 with 23 minutes remaining. When they go head-to-head, it’s easy to see how evenly matched they are. They find the barrel seemingly at will, throw giant, stylish carves in the most critical part of the hook and know how to punctuate a ride with a giant snap, tail slide or air. Despite the driving rain, the entire beach was buzzing, and emails were pouring in from around the world from fans glued to their computers. The key moment happened at the 11-minute mark when Andy, needing an 8.6, grabbed priority and held it. He waited for his wave for seven long minutes, showing the patience and poise you expect from a three-time world champ, even as great waves peeled off around him. Andy said, “I was a bit stressed, but I knew I had that one good score locked away, and all I needed to do was back it up.”
Finally, with four minutes left, the biggest wave of the day lined up across the reef. Andy took off deep, so deep in fact that the wave looked like a closeout. But he drove across it and then flew up into the longest and heaviest tube of the day. He came out, slammed a turn in the lip and claimed it all the way to the beach. The judges scored him a well-deserved 9.93, giving Andy another win in a Quiksilver event. Interestingly, up to this point in 2005, Kelly hadn’t won a Quiksilver event since France in 1996, while Andy’s taken out 4 of them in the last two years. Meanwhile, Kelly has won 4 Billabong events in the same period. Kelly's comment, “It’s like we’re both sponsored by both companies.”
After it was over, Kelly downplayed the overall significance of Andy’s win, saying, “It may have been one wave in one heat, but by him winning, he gained 178 points on me. If I’d won, I would have moved ahead about the same.”
Later on, after the fans and crew had drifted away from the beach, Taj Burrow wrote emails in the office of the event at Hebara Beach and reflected on what he had seen (yes, in 2005, emails weren't on your phone). He knew what happened was more than just about rating points or world titles - it was about the magic that can happen when everything comes together. “Kelly was surfing better than I had ever seen anyone surf, but that wave Andy got - he deserved to win,” he said. “It was the best final I’ve ever seen.”

As a big Kelly Slater fan, I truly admire the skill, determination, and follow through of the great Andy Irons…!!!
@@steveperreira5850 RIght on Steve! Both these guys have that serious competitive fire and like all great athletes they can access that power and passion as needed.
We miss you Andy! so good to see this generation of surfer!
4:46 - A young Dane Reynolds. 🔥
back when pro surfing was great.
More Andy footage! This is awesome 🔥
Old school surfing is so fun to watch 🙌🏼
This video just put the biggest smile on my face. So awesome watching all these legends. That final though 🔥🔥 AI living rent free in Kelly's head! Love it. What an absolute legend. Best ever.
We miss you, Andy...❤️
What a heat. And no detraction whatsoever from the slightly longer more rocketed boards of the day, or the much longer boardshorts.
The live broadcast of this final back in the day was a real nail-biter. Unforgettable!
Was that Pottz in the booth? We were there filming and so missed the broadcast.
Surfing in its prime
The change between those guys… no more hate, just happy to fight each other in the final. If Andy didn’t have those démons in his head, they could have done this for years!
Andy Irons and Kelly Slater- so good! These two so different but so similar. Classic contest and an important part of surf history.
I really hope WSL brings back Japan event. My country has lots of shredders and we love surf!
No.... no more Japan. WSL needs proper GOOD waves.
Japan can the WQS no worries !
@@adambane1719 true but I think Japan waves better than surf ranch
Japan does get good waves and the people are amazing surf fans. The WSL should have a CT competition there.
@@kaiasano8370 I AGREE. THE SURF RANCH IS THE MOST BORING COMP EVER!
@@lancejackson3618 hahahahah yeah its shit, some of next year's events suck
Two absolute shredders😉. RIP Andy✌️❤️
As an old school soul surfer I look at this history of branding and realize we have made a mark in the history of the future
Andy’s shorts…epic
Will that below the knee style come back? In the late 80s Billabong was making clam digger surf trunks.
Bummer Dane couldn’t handle the tour, would have been epic to see the shit he would’ve done in the coming years
Probably the most gifted by far and creative but its ok looking back, at least he surfed. The footage is there. In a way I dont care that he was not consistent because the quality is better than everyone else.
At least he was able to pull off this hammer at a competition and i saw it live: ruclips.net/video/eXADDt_2P_8/видео.html
Andy forever!
Classic!
A champion knows how to lose when it's fair a winner will never know when a champion wins..
A.I FOREVER!!!
2:10 Sunny just sitting in there like the final boss
I miss Andy 😔
Wow love watching Andy won riding chilli surfboards!!!!🙏❤️
Was a close one and Andy pulled out the win. Clutch performance.
Is it me, or was this generation of surfers just way better grovelers?
These guys had more influence from the previous generation- where style really mattered. And so we see Wardo, Taj and Mick and the boys putting some nice groove into the opening round "grovelers". Nowadays it doesn't matter if you look like you have a 2x4 stuck up the bango- as long as you can bust an air you good. Peace
@@Wisdom808 exactly. I get into it with Brasilians a lot cause they think surfing is airs without style. For every Brasilian every Brasilian is the best. 🙄 But look at these guys make use of nothing waves with style! You don’t see it much anymore. For me, that’s sort of a more accurate measure of skill in much regard. Going heavy front foot down the line in a bigger wave doesn’t require much knowledge or skill. Just my view.
Especially the guys and gals from Florida.
@@mikeuptegrove I'm brazilian and i agree with you, i also argue with a lot of people because of this subject. Even brazilian surfing was more infected by style back in these days, i'd rather watch guys like Renato, Teco, Victor Ribas or Dada Figueiredo anyday over Medina or Caio Ibelli. We have a lot of brazilian surfers who enjoy style, but the 'brazilian storm' surfers affected the younger generations views on surfing
@@fernandomaron87 big time, the younger generation’s view is: garbage! I admire the fact that you’re the first Brasilian online that has any real objectivity. I have been to Brasil many times. I love Brasilians, but online in the surf forums they are so fanatical that they are delusional. Brasilians are always the best. That’s their bottom line. Period. I’m American, I don’t say automatically Americans did the best in every contest. I was rooting for Jack Robinson last season because I thought he surfed the best overall. I thought Toledo did great, and he’s my favorite, most humble, Brasilian, but the fact that he sat out basically in Tahiti begged the question of whether or not he was title worthy. Maybe I disagree with WSL with regard to what it means to be the best. Could be. I’m not a fan of the Brasilian storm, not because I don’t like Brasilian surfers, but because it has a fanatical element to it that is outside the scope of reality…and outside the scope of what I consider top surfing. I rather see a Tom Curren sort of surfing than a Medina. I think Curren is still the measuring stick frankly, and I wasn’t even alive when Curren was doing his thing. So there’s no generational bias at play. But, I can watch video and see he clearly has something that still most do not, and it is the embodiment of what surfing is and should be in my opinion. So he’s my measuring stick frankly. With regard to groveling, the guys in this video were exceptional!! I think that groveling like that requires a certain knowledge that better waves don’t. So I find it impressive. BTW, off topic, I’m hoping Brasil can save freedom for the world right now. I’m sorta thinking Brasil is that world’s last hope. 🙏🙏🙏🤙🤙
Uncle Bobby missing Andy something awful. Then you put this out, now my heart is feeling full. Many thanks my brothers
All you can do is judge by style, they are literally all amazing and got the absolute most out of that wave🤙
Absolutely! Both incredible surfers with just different personalities and that shows in their surfing style. Their talent, fire and passion are very similar though.
Andy's wave at 9:26 cemented his superiority on that heat, he absolutely killed that wave and it was a well deserved win, in my eyes.
This should be titled 'When Andy ruled Japan'
Seems like yesterday. Almost 20 years gone by now and the CT has not been back to Japan for an event.
You would think the WSL would try and get a CT event there. The people are absolutely frothing for surfing, the waves get good and everyone has a blast there.
@@Nalu_TV The WSL def doesn't need to go back to Japan ever again. The WSL needs proper GOOD waves.
Japan can have the WQS no worries.
@@adambane1719 Have you ever surfed Japan? In the right season it goes off, but the inconsistency and need for a typhoon swell may be no good for a CT event. But I agree the WSL needs a proper change- maybe not Japan or Brazil or Bells and Margs, back to the Gold Coast for sure and maybe some good boat trip adventures with less surfers in epic waves- especially for the 5-surfer final seems like a no brainer. Shoots den
Funny how people say surfing has gotten so much better when u go back these guys would beat anyone today . Not much has changed
They were all better than today’s comp guys
Cant handle today's spastic pump down the line to a air ro its just trash to judge and watch. Bring back man carves sunny Garcia Taylor nox Luke Egan. Taj has the best snaps and flow and never won a contest. Basically when Kelly hangs it up. Wsl will die off as it should. Then Jhon and Kelly can make their own tour with bobby martinis as ceo.
@@paulmidd5523 haha…Jack Robinson, Ethan Ewing, JJF, Yago Dora…there’s hope yet.
Andy had the best style, grace and power ..fluid.... similar to Tom Curren and Rob Machado (Machado was just not into competition). Even back then my favorite all time is Dane. He was not consistent but that is for comps,. he was the most dynamic and gifted.
Yeah, people tend to overlook Rob's skills on heavy waves as he enjoys a more cruising style nowadays, but he gave Slater a run for his money at some point during the mid 90's, and he was mixing it up his stuff with better style than Kelly.
those giant board shorts were ridiculous.
Helped with the sunburn, lol
Andy Local boy blew Kelly away. ALOHA ANDY.
This is why RUclips will always win 😂🎉❤
I'm Japanese surfer, this epic final held at "Malibu" point where the best reef point break in Chiba area!
I never forget young Andy beat Kelly with explosive tube ride!
日本人サーファーだけど、この時のCTが部原開催ながらファイナルはマリブに移動したんだよね。
関東の横綱と言われるマリブでこんな凄えファイナルが実現して、千葉のリーフポイントが世界に認められた気がしたよ。
That was an epic contest, and the final was incredible. We were there filming. You can Stream the whole film on Nalu.TV This film is free 🤙
That was the last pro contest for ASP/WSL.
Awesome coverage of AI / Slater comp.
Stoked you enjoyed it. Japan is awesome and it was a great contest to cover.🤙
AI forever the only one that really had the goat's number best surf rivalry ever
Yes. Those two were on fire and brought out the best in each others surfing.
I love how Andy is just soooo stoked out there. Part of why I loved the guy so much. It was like he was a big kid, and even though he was the best in the world it looked like he always had that stoke. And also just on fire competitively when he got going. Just so freaking amped at this event. I don’t think anyone could’ve beat him when he was in the zone like this.
Great memories!!
Awesome soundtrack, waves and phenomenonomal surfing from two of the best Surfers in the world just a total bumber one is no longer with us. They both ripped off against each other in comp but were good mates out of the water as well.
It was the Pinnacle of a Gone by Era…
Crazy how in 20 years we will look at these days as the good old days.
Love this! Thank you for sharing Nalu TV
Andy Irons is better than anyone today
SPEED POWER FLOW thats all you need
Awesome, competitive surfing in its heyday, best surfers and characters!
They all seem better than todays ct
sick boardies
😛 below the knees was the style for a while. Will be back someday
real battles
The Nadal-Feder of surfing.
Wardo!
I dunno Kelly did it better but i guess it depends on scoring criteria,Kelly surfing about 3 times as many waves but Andy just waited for that bigger wave.
At that level these guys generate their own speed on the wave and look as good on a 3 foot wave as a 6 foot wave.
To me i am more impressed by Slaters fitness and energy just wave after wave.
Excellent breakdown. Yes, Kelly had more waves and more maneuvers and looked great. Andy stuck to the criteria knowing that they score the set waves higher. Was so close. You could feel the tension in the air as thousands watched from the beach and the bridge.
Just like in boxing when you have the guy who did 100 jabs throughout the whole fight against the guy who didn't punched much, but every punch was a power hit. I've seen the judges giving the win to both types.
IA forever
bruce surfing with no leash
Absolutely outrageous judging, I’m totally impartial but how can that be an 8+ wave?
I’m totally impartial ? Okay, shut up nerd corn boy.

Dane Reynolds was on a WCT contest in 2005?
Dane was a Quiksilver Wildcard for this event and was ripping, but he went down when he came up against Andy Irons who was in top competitive form.
Yep. Grom Dane lol
how long are the boardshorts
Super long. Just at and over the knees was best. A couple feet long maybe?
21 inches
I still own a couple of them from that era, they look kinda ugly but are comfy af

@@Nalu_TV do you not watch modern day wsl? Every event is crap waves dominated by surfers who can’t even catch waves at chopes or pipe, finals being at trestles and the cut is the worst thing that they have ever done, aside from selling out the sport. Kelly doesn't have a tail pad in the final.
Good eye Stephen. He always uses in now. Still see a lot of old school guys who never use tail pads. Something about feeling the board more.
